Pavore9: Looking forward to see the pictures of your greenhouse. ls it for cucumber?
The pictures is of a kenyan guy who is also a cucumber farmer like you. His greenhouse is 24ft by 45ft. He said he started early last year with N350k which covered the greenhouse construction, seeds and other inputs.
He harvests 240kg (on the low side is between 160kg-180kg) of cucumber weekly and sells a kilo for N100.
This should motivate you. that's quite motivating... mine is a bit bigger. I will do cucumber there, watermelon, tomato and sweet pepper. |

Topbrooks: Good Questions. Most of these things I've discussed with Soloxam. You Know then I didn't know there was a platform like this. Straight to your questions 1. Disease Infection. That was the major cause. They started growing well and I was rejoicing thinking my 1 acre Cucumber Farm will make me thousands but suddenly the leaves started turning brownish yellow and to make matter worse, my supposed ' Guru' from NIHORT wrongly 'diagnosed' it. Though one of them promised to come around and physically check things in the farm but never did. I battled with it and managed to harvest a very small quantity. Soloxam later said I tried to have had little harvest. It was Downy Mildew caused by Fungi I should also have started small and not that big anyway. I also had a little issue with those guys who worked for me, they also played their part in destroying some of my plants
2. So much Ideas. * Professional and competent advise from practicing farmers * I didn't mulch in the first attempt. Now I know about mulching. You know I also had to battle weed after they began to die * I didn't Stalk in the first attempt thinking it will cost me more(capital intensive) but I Know now that its worth it, of cause for several obvious reasons 3. I cant really remember any. I never came across this thread until after the all thing
4. As a matter of fact, am trying again, have bounced back but will be using just a plot on another piece of land( Trying to minimize risk-you know now). I will not use Ashley seed variety again. I'll be getting seeds from Soloxam. I'll also be going fully organic no more NPK Hope this helps interesting one sir. mr soloxam has been a God-sent to many people. highly commendable and reliable guy. Am I allowed to make some fee suggestions to you sir, regarding all these? |

jeffmyson: This thread is a perfect brainstorming session! Every critic and contribution have enriched this discuss!
The relevance of the thread is when it makes sense and someone actually get valuable informations that will lead to their breakthrough! am glad that people are benefiting from the thread. it's great. but, I see alot of theoretical farmers here now, unlike at the initial stage when people were making practical and achievable comments. but it's okay. so far as people are benefiting. I just pray that mis-information is not passed here. just like the guy who said you can hardly make 200k from a hectare of tomatoes. come on! that comment was ridiculous. and very mis-informing |

ireke: Hello Topbrooks. I believe in "failure analysis" and I wonder if you can oblige me with the answers to the following questions. others may even benefit from your answers.
1. in your opinion, what is/are the causes of the failure of your previous attempt? for example someone mentioned staffing earlier 2. Mention some ideas that you have seen here that you definitely missed out in your previous attempt. 3. What are the things the OP mentioned here that you did but did not work well for you? 4. Mention one thing that you definitely will not repeat if you try again.
Thanks.
Farmer Jasper (You deserve a title to your name o. Afterall, other professions dey add title and we love titles in Nigeria). Words will fail me to express my opinion about you. let me just say that you are one of the reasons that make me believe that there is hope for Nigeria. I am flattered. your questions are precise and solution-based. Thanks for this... as much as I believe in being good at production, I believe making informed decisions is the key to making wealth in agriculture. |

PapaBrowne: That cheap?? And you guys were going to pay manual labour 2k per day when they can't even work an Acre in a day!!
Mechanization will solve majority of our agriculture problems.
I attended and Agro Machinery event in Italy last November and to my amazement these machinery are not too expensive.
I wish a group of people can just pull funds together to fix this machinery draught!! absolutely, I agree with you sir. God will help us |

Just went to check on the job being done by my Labour hands a few minutes ago. it is a disaster!! the beds look like snake tracks, thin, narrow and far for being straight. what happened to following the pegging and model that was given to them I have no option than to relieve them of their duties, because they are grossly incompetent. the problem with thin, narrow and curved beds is staking. if the beds are not straight or slightly bent, staking will be a problem. if the the beds are too thin and narrow, I can't plant at both ends, because I have to give a 50cm spacing between each seed. Now we are back to square one, I have to start searching for new labour. |
Agriculture › Re: Lets Talk Organic Farming by jasper7(m): 10:01am On Jan 20, 2015 |
I am almost completely an organic farmer. I preach and teach organic farming. to be honest, it's more profitable especially in small scale farming like what we practice in Nigeria. but in Nigeria organic farming is not that profitable, because people don't know the difference and they don't care either (except ajebutters). |
