ohkay... I remember I promised to talk on marketing. Marketing can be viewed from different angles. And to the best of my knowledge, the major reason fresh food producers have been unable to build a sustainable market for their goods is because of the non-existence of branding in fresh food market.

Everybody just throws their weight in a public market which give room for massive displacement and poaching between suppliers and distributors.

Imagine if peak milk had no name on it. and it was just a milk shared in cups. Yes, peak milk will mantain it's quality, but do you really believe peak milk will still be in business?

Branding gives room for advertising and also room for easy introduction of new product.

For instance, if Jasper cucumber is popular in Lagos, Jasper cabbage, carrot and watermelon will not fin a hard time selling in Lagos.

Can someone tell me exactly why we don't brand our products in Nigeria?

PoliticsRe: Native Doctors Storm Imo Govt House For Cleansing Over Alleged Coffin by jasper7(m): 3:00pm On Feb 18, 2015
cabjoy:
A group of thugs on Monday in Owerri, Imo state, unleashed terror on harmless protesting widows, leaving them with multiple injuries.
The widows numbering over 2000 under the aegis of Imo Widows Association (IWA) were drawn from the 27 local government areas of the state assembled at the Okigwe Road roundabout few meters to the Government House, Owerri at about 8.45am to protest some of the injustices meted to the Minister of State for Education, Professor Viola Onwuliri.
The protesting women alleged that a group of women suspected to be Imo State government agents last week in Owerri accused the Minister of killing her husband Prof. Celestine Onwuliri who died in a plane crash.
While the widows who were assembled peaceful with their placards, a group of young men suspected to be cultists emerged from nowhere hauling snatches of pure water on them before flogging them  like a common criminal.
Some of the placards read, ‘’An injustice to a widow is an injustice to all. Governor Rochas Okorocha leave Prof. Viola Onwuliri alone. Onwuliri had assisted us a lot’’.
The angry mob who were physically supervised by the state Commissioner for Youths and Sports Mr Kenneth Emelu cornered the widows to Item Street which is the adjoining street of Wetheral Road where they (hoodlums) beat them up to stupor.
A camera man from the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), Mr. Eric Etuk who was covering the protest was beaten-up and his camera was taken away by the hoodlums. Etuk who was bleeding profusely said that all his personal effects were also taken away.
As the widows were running away for their dear lives some of them felt into the gutter sustaining various degree of injures.
Narrating their ordeal, the leader of the group (widow), Mrs Edith Anjiwo said that a group of young emerged from nowhere at the old Garden Park and started banging on their vehicles as well as ordering them to enter into their cars. ‘’We were in Owerri to let the government know that it is not good to disparage or maltreat any widow. The attack on us was uncalled for and unwarranted because we are harmless’’.
The state commissioner for Information and Strategy, Chief Chidi Ibe applauded the beating of NTA Cameraman saying that, he was hired by Prof. Onwuliri to cover the event.
It took the intervention of combined military, police and other security agencies led by commander 34 Brigade Obinze, Brigadier -General Lanre Bello to put the situation under control as some women who were mobilized by the state government started to be violent by attacking the widows.
Governor Rochas Okorocha addressing supporters on arrival from Abuja accused Prof. Onwuliri of sponsoring the crisis alleging some of the widows who were clothed in black came from Abia state and warned the Abia State Government to stop allowing  her women to be recruited to cause crisis in Imo State.
early newspaper didn't tell uss anything about coffin in the story. After 1week we are hearing coffin.
Pls Gov Rochas and His admires when did this poor widows carry coffin in their protest. Let us be honest pls
So all these that they are saying is truth Ka O Puo
okay, I have read through all the news that is here about this widows and am pretty sure it's only yours I should respond to.

I was in owerri when this fracas occured. My office is on Mann street with a vip overview of the aforementioned wetheral round about. and I can tell you authoritatively that no young man chased after those women. rather, the real IWA whom by the way are strong rochas allies locked up their shops in the market and came to fight. their anger not being the protest, but the impersonation of their group. am surprised they omitted the involvevement of pdp militart personnel from obstructing the real IWA from entering the govt. house. see how the conveniently omitted the part where they marched into the govt house seeking audience with the governor and using soldiers to barricade the gates the Douglas house.

why did they omit the 2 military tanks that were brought to the scene? Those women acted shamelessly and like mercenaries, now they paint themselves innocent. its all right.

If you read the story you posted well, you'll see that some things do not add up. on the said day, rochas was absent from the govt house, he came in later when the fracas was at a height.

Also be advised that viola onwuliri is pdp, nta is pdp and rochas is apc. so... this is still one of pdp propaganda horseshlt to discredit apc using nta as medium. don't believe all the crap you read on the news, must of them are written by paid scumbags. thanks

l recently dropped by a carrot farm where l went to drop some parcels and was thrilled by the carrots l saw there and was told it was of the Nantes variety which gives them 15-17tonnes per acre, They were also some which they were growing hydroponically (without soil) but l didn't get to see them because l was in a hurry,

l will certainly want to believe that Carrot is not exclusive to Jos area.
I believe so too. but 15-17 tonnes of carrot per acre is some serious numbers o. wow

@Jasper there are factors that makes ur carrot smaller, 1. is verity as mention by Pavore9, 2. spacing; if it is closely space u have very small one, the one I did last year, I notice the one I spaced well did well and big, the the once that were too close was very small and thinning. 3. is the soil must be very loss, carrot will penetrate well if the soil is loosen, also it require good amount of water at root elongated stage.........
my brother, this one is a development. I appreciate. so... how many times should I plough?

please i want Cucumbers in the House to help me out because i am still a bit confuse.

How is Cucumber sold(i mean in Unit). I mean assuming with an hectare of land someone is expecting 500kg of cucumber during harvest.

1.My Question is Cucumber sold per KG?
If yes how much per Kg?

2.What is the expected Unit of Cucumber expected
a.per hectare of land
2.what it is a plot of land

3. Jasper and others since your experience in the business who are your top 6 customers.i mean those that pertronize you
hello sir, let me answer your questions the way you asked
1. yes, cucumber is sold per kg. there's no static price. it can vary from 80-200 depending on the season or location

2. the unit also can vary, you can expect between 0-30tonne per hectare, depending on farm practise adopted.

3. for cucumber, you have the spa, premium and open market, fast foods, caterers and hotels. hope that answers all your questions

Just got back into my favourite town - Owerri. cheesy. Good to be back home. The fresh air in my front yard is refreshing.

Today, I want to talk about marketing. I have always received calls from prospective farmers and the one major question they ask is... "is there market for it?".

My answer to that question is "I don't know". And to be honest, that's the only answer available.

The truth is, there's no "kinetic" market sitting and waiting for anybody. But there's is always a "potential" market. when I talk of potential and kinetic, I talk of prospective and moving. I would come back to talk more about that. Let me go and greet my staff and fellow farmers.

Two weeks ago, a guy who was pitching his company's services said that the 24ft by 72ft greenhouse they build produces 1650kg of capsicum monthly & they will also facilitate exporting the produce as it attracts good price in d international market.

thanks for dis piece of advice. The reason y we young farmer are nt really making enuf profit is jack of all crops master of none, sm years bck i planted ugu in large quantity in d long run wen i started making my cul money i quickly jump 2 maize production instead of concentrating in d maintenance of my ugu i faced d maize at d end of d whole show weed tuk over ugu plot and i lost d maize 2 grasscutter nd weed.more divine wisdom upon u in JESUS NAME
Thanks for this practical example. This is exactly what I am talking about. On a good day, if you had continued your ugu and expanded. by now, you'd have been talking about your 1 million naira ugu farm. I know a farmer who harvest a minimum of 200k worth of ugu per harvest. from a land that is less than 2 acres. and she harvests twice a week. she now is a king in ugu farming and it's feeding her and her family.
AgricultureRe: My 1 Million Naira Alternative To Cucumber (agribusiness 101) [a Must Read] by jasper7(op): 8:17pm On Feb 05, 2015
About 2years ago when I was going back and forth on what to farm. My immediate elder brother gave me an advice that has so far been a game changer for me in agribusiness.

He said to me "Jay, concentrate on one crop, be a master in it. produce it all year round and exploit every possible market in it before you move to another".

That sounded very silly to me. why do I put all my eggs in one basket? My brother is not really the business guru, (he even takes business advice from me). But he had pretty solid reasons for it.

The idea of not putting all your eggs in one basket doesn't apply in agribusiness. especially for someone who is starting new, commercially.

You need perfection to be able to produce a crop commercially, and make profit in it. And perfection is hardly achieved if your attention is divided between multiple crops.

This is where most local farmers get it wrong. Back in the days, when Nigeria was excelling in agriculture, you had farmers who had 100 of acres of maize, for groundnut, cassava, oil palm, cocoa, cashew e.t.c They were king in their own crops, they were wealthy.

My suggestion. if you have 10acres for instance, plant 9acres of whatever crop you are really good at. The last acre divide into 6plots. and experiment other profitable crops in it. if out of all you decide to change to another, then you can. but perfection is key in commercial farming.
