Bamsyle: Hehe . . . good for you to start on that 'safe' note . . . I always scream that clause whenever my locus standi on issues like this is put to question . . .
BTW, I kick with any genre of music that I find appealing . . . variety is the spice of life . . . just that Rap is the most expressive genre I've ever come across.
@topic
I'm divided on this issue . . .
I welcome change . . . it's a constant thing in life . . . and in Music, the more change we have, the better . . . as long as it's progressive anyway.
However, Rap, unlike Pop, Rock, R'n'B et al, has its high standards et strict rules . . . example - anyone armed with a good voice, a good use of it, and a knowledge of Love and its offsprings, can become a good R'n'B singer . . . there are no strict rules or high standards . . . and that's why you won't find a Don Williams/Kenny Rogers generation screaming "crucify him" at Donnell Jones, Ginuwine or whoever . . .
In R'n'B, fans love and admire their fave artistes . . . in Rap, it ain't so . . . a good MC (especially back in those days) must command sumn deeper than love from his fans . . . something measured with terms like respect and awe . . . and there are so many hurdles to cross to be considered an MC of repute . . . there are broad-based issues like in-depth lyrics, sick delivery/flow . . . there are sub-issues like multis, in-rhymes, wordplay, metas et al . . .
An MC needs more than a good voice to be reckoned with . . . we're talking bout cats who grew up battling with rhymes improvised or spat on-the-spur-of-the-moment . . . cats who can spin one word with a thousand meanings . . . dudes who can move the world with words . . . a good MC (again - particularly back in those days) gets treated like a deity, a demi-god . . .
With all these determining factors, I ain't surprised that some folk would say Hip Hop is dead . . . of course it's cos the game has changed . . . some good . . . some bad . . . but when you do the math . . . the bad seems to outweigh the good.
It's a case of to whom much is given expected . . . much more is expected. Gbam . . ! |

2busy: Assalamalykum, my brother, i have heard of an hadith (i cant remember the narrator) that said " what is haram in islam is clear, and what is halal is also clear, but there are some grey matter (things that are not clear) in between, so shun those area"
I think your case falls in this unclear matters, which you are to shun.
My advice,: NEXT TIME YOU FALL INTO THIS KIND OF SITUATION, ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS ISTIKHARA (ALLAH'S COUNSELLING/GUIDEANCE) (GET CITADEL OF THE BELIEVERS, THE PRAYER IS THERE). OFFER 2 RAKAT NAWAFIL,
AND ALLAH WILL GUIDE YOU RIGHT.

Frizy: @Javalove
Salam brother, it's a good thing you brought this topic up. It is very important that we integrate our jobs into the religion of Islam because our aim is practise it in totality and shun what is not part of religion. I have been trying to work on a project too, but in a different way which I would talk about later. To come to the question, writing programs that requires selecting a number or persons done in a random way to win money is gambling because the user has a skate. And gambling is forbidden by Allah, I intend to found a company, a software company that aims to Islamize the way computing is done today.
Instead of having a money gambling software, if you're good in writing softwares, we could develop a social networking site, I know how to write coldfusion, we will gather enough intelligence and methodologies from the conventional software developers only to implement "our" ways of life and thinking into what they get. Think about it, developing such a site would gather Muslims and indoctorinate them in a certain way, with web applications/gadgets designed to meet the everyday needs to the average Muslim. Imagine Muslims on facebook only saying Julia Roberts is their idol and all those stuffs. Piece of shit.
So with your programming skills you can develop software that openly embrace the Islamic ideologies, in time we will get to where we hope to be in. Insha Allah. Salam Alykun Frizy May Allah guide us aright. I like your analysis. The job has been awarded to my company (i own the company). I have just asked another brother here and he says I can go ahead. I am still researching it a bit and I will ask more scholars. If at the end of the day I cant do it, can I give it out to someone else to do and get some percentage of the money? Yea, we can collaborate on some projects together and I would be glad to work with you. I'm a Java programmer (J2SE, J2EE, JavaFX, JDBC) and I do PHP very well too. Lets IM on Yahoo to discuss more. May Allah guide us aright. Ameen |

Bashbaba: Salaam alaykum
May Allah makes whatever decision you arrive at easy for you and not contrary to your deen.May He makes it an Ujjah for you and not against you in the last day. I actually had my stand which coincide with what my Imam said when I discussed the issue with him.To this end,I will like to drop my opinnion and here is what he has to say:
''There is no disagreement among scholars of this noble deen of ours that gambling is haram. The issue of writing a soft ware here may have difference of opinions. The soft ware writing is not evil but what the soft ware will be used for is evil especially when you have a fore knowledge of the proposed usage of the soft ware. My humble position is that it is like aiding and abetting gambling. The instrument to be used here is the soft ware. I think we should know that action is not judged on the basis of sincerity in Islam but it must be correct. In Islam, what is evil must be avoided, whatever leads to the way of evil must be avoided. The objectives of shariah are: 1. protection of religion 2. protection of family 3. protection of property 4. protection of life 5. protection of intellect 6. protection of honour. There is no doubt that gambling affect religion, family, property and to an extent honour. We should advise our brother to leave it "Whoever that trusts in Allaah, Allaah suffices them, provide for them from where they do not expect'" Q65:2-7 Thanks for the opportunity given me. May Allaah forgive us wherever we make mistakes.'' Jazakhumulah Khairan Brother. Dont you think this is similar to a muslim participating in building of a church or doing carpentary work which i hear is halal. May Allah guide us |

He asked a question based on his faith. What has ignorance got to do with that? Stop trying to stir up trouble between both faiths. Believe what you will.

Lagosboy: I have a few questions. Do people pay some money before they could be randomly picked to win a prize? If they dont pay any money or contribute the pot out of which a random person takes it all then it cannot be termed gambling.
On the other hand the contract of employment you have is between you and your company and not the gambling company. You will be creating a program with a defined specification and whatever it used for is not your business as what your being paid for is the program. You will not be involved with the gambling company as in you will not be running the gambling business for them and your not working for the gambling company either. For you to be involved in gambling you either have to be the gambler, the gambling proprietor, or involved in the running of the gambling business.
You will be in the same category as the producer of the cement, block , funriture in the buliding of the gambling company. The producer of the cement cannot be termed to be involved in haram or the manufacturer of the furniture in the gambling company. Likewise the supplier of the computers at at the gambling company cannot be termed to involved in the gambling business. I believe you fall in this category and in my humble opinion there is no issue with it at all.
Wallahu a'lam Thanks. May Allah increase u in knowledge. I run the company ( www.jajitech.net). You are absolutely right. I'm not part of their company . . . and l i will do si to write the program for them. YES people send in SMSses which costs money. And the same thing can be said of a bricklayer taking part in church building . . . May Allah guide us all |

congoshine: One thing I have come to realise is that Nigerians are probably the most religious people in the world (christians & muslims) & yet the country hasn't moved forward. please leave your beliefs aside, shouldn't this be cause for concern ?
Both Muslims & Christians create rules they assume God will be happy with, bind themselves to those rules & assume that will get them to 'heaven' even if they continue to live miserable lives here on earth.
The assumption is that 'THe OTHER PEOPLE' (i.e those not following these rules;in this case of Christians -muslims & vice versa) will not make it to Heaven, but you due to some Divine providence will make it becos u have kept to these rules.
I feel most people may be deceiving themselves, becos the impression u get is that all those not applying religious beliefs the way you or your imam or pastor see it means they (the other people) are not worthy of heaven. You may be in for a shocker !!! God created all and don't feel you are somehow 'special'. We have about 3 billion non-christians/non-muslims between China & India- so they are all doomed
My suggestion to you: if the business is a legitimate business in the country you operate, please work hard there to take care of your family, until you get something better, don't do something irrational in the name of 'what you think God wants' that you will continue to regret. I remember while I was serving, some pastor came to us in NYSC CAMP and said as Christians we must not take jobs in breweries etc, I was just wondering then, with all the responsibilities I had & everyone looking up to me back home that I should reject a good offer from NBL It’s a different case if your conscience isn’t with it, like I personally don’t think I can work for any tobacco company, however if I get a really good offer that will change my life. . . .why not ?! So please learn to separate your religion from economic matters because NO ONE has all the answers, not me ,you ,my pastor nor your mullah !! Islam ls a way of life to us muslims |
