This is a very interesting read! Nice Job. I also keep a diary for my caucasian's but I really enjoyed reading yours because of the humour u add. Your grammar is also on point so I don't get derailed trying to pick out mistakes and all.

I need an update please.

One of the puppies on the 3rd day snapped to scale. Also see Ira eating. Her energy level still pretty high as usual. unlike the first birth, she didn't lose her goove this time around.

Recently at an AKC Dog Breeding Symposium held at Michigan State University with key note speaker Dr. Claudia Orlandi Ph.D. (AKC's breeder of the year and author of The ABC's of Dog Breeding) shocked many breeders when it was disclosed that there have been scientific studies to show that it is detrimental for bitches to skip heat cycles. It was shared that once you have begun to mate a bitch that you should NOT skip any heat cycles until she is completely finished breeding. A bitch is said to be "finished" breeding when her litter size is drastically decreased. The study involved following females that were bred every heat cycle and females that were bred every other heat cycle. After they were "finished" breeding, the bitches were spayed and their uterus dissected. Those showing most stress, and damage of the uterus were the females that were bred "every other" heat cycle. Part of the rational that skipping heat cycles is harmful stems from the fact that with consecutive heat cyclesthere is no "flushing action" of the uterus, that normally occurs by having a litter of puppies.The female will go through Estrus no matter if she is bred or not and by breeding a healthy bitch back to back,can lesson the chances of the female experiencing pyometra, infections and false pregnancys. The choice to breed or not, should be contingent upon the goals the breeder has and for sure the mental and physical health of the female, above all else. The important information to take away from this study, is that a breeder with healthy females, does have "choices''

Whining by now, day 3 is almost non existent except for when Ira gets up abruptly. I guess they are now ok and the temperature is just fine. I heat the room with charcoal especially at night.

you mean as nice as their mum and older siblings. Well, we sold them for 90k last litter. we are yet to decide on the price for this litter. And only males are available as we are keeping the female.

mama and babies on day of birth. The last 2 were born with poo stringing from their anus I even thought their intestines were coming out (it sure freaked me out).

pls will like to know, the corn you do feed is it cooked or normal and the groundnut too is it cooked or fried, with the okra soup, and do you still feed her those because I am marveled at the size of your cauc.

No I don't make the okra soup anymore. I just fry my groundnut and grind with the corn(maize) not fried and add fish or crayfish. Then I heat water to boiling point add my concoction and stir. Funny I used to add Maggi and salt while cooking for them.Ira is ok with it but Zeus appetite fluctuates. Now that she has whelped, I will add the roasted soybeans. I actually saw the recipe on this nairaland.

I really don't know what will work for your dog. When we got Ira, we didn't know much about dogs and feeding them except for the mongrels we had while growing up. She was fed Diamond kibbles and canned food at the kennel where we got her from. Since diamond was too expensive, we settled for Arion and canned wet food occasionally till she was 6months when she stopped eating the Arion on her own.

After that I started feeding her corn, groundnut, crayfish and soybean. I didn't even know about the toxicity of soy beans and I would just buy and grind without roasting or removing the back. I would prepare it like tuwo with okra soup enough to feed about 3 people. I am sure she would have been obese if she was not very active and if not for the daily walks.

I even thought she was not growing fine since I had never seen any other caucasian to compare her with.

When we went for mating,at the same kennel we got her from, the owner was beyond surprised and advised I stop feeding her soybeans roasted or not.

If you noticed, Zeus my male dog is not as weighty as Ira. And we stopped feeding him kibbles at 6 months too but he was a picky eater.

@ day 63, Ira had 8puppies but 2 were stillborn. That means 6 are alive. We give God all the glory. The pups and mama are all doing fine.

I woke up to see Ira strong and kicking as usuall and I was really disappointed. I fed her some of my leftover Semo and soup and she gulped it down like she. was starving. That act disappointed some more. In my frustration, I walked away deciding to cook her food much later.

I went about my chores nope I went about browsing first and getting hope despair at the same time. I decided to channel the energy into house chores.

An hour later, I casually said to check on her and there it was, a puppy on the ground (speak of a miracle).

I also noticed the belly does not look as big as it was and one side bulges out more than the other side. I think the puppies are moving round that's why.

day 61! by now I thought I would be too busy nursing mummy and pups to even make a post but that is so not the case. I was busy on my groundnut farm just to take my mind off Ira and my anxiety over her lack of progression.

It's funny how I was worried some days back when she was not eating and could not move. Today, I am worried that she has too much energy and has a nice appetite.

Well Ira has been behaving less ready to whelp. She has so much energy and is back to her old self (barking, jumping and all) I have since restrained her once again.

I really hope all is well. I have Googled to see if there was a case like this without much luck.

I will wait till day 69 and see.

Day 59, high burst of energy plus barking. low appetite. Mixing her food with bread did not work much so I mixed with Indomie and it did the magic.

One question, from previous knowledge. I learnt its bad to allow a dog stretch or jump when shes pregnant, how true is this? Plus whats the cost of a puppy and where is your location?

yeah I also heard about the stretching thing but I am not really sure if it's true or not. But worry not, we will soon find out cos my Ira stretches for africa. I know jumping is not good even in humans when pregnant. it will be wise to minimise jumping as much as possible.

The cost of puppy is yet to be decided and we are based in Jos.

Parvo struck your dog at 5months?? That dog is almost an adult already. I would cry if a 5months old dog dies. The no eating part was what my Vet told me first, she said force feeding them would only complicate the matter and i didnt bother either.
IV fluids worked for your dog.. Happy for you. I believe your pup's age also gave him an advantage. His immune system were already quite strong

As a dog breeder or a Dog PAWrent, I believe our greatest fear right now is the dreaded Uncle Parvo.. A viral dog disease so deadly It kills in days and gives our pets only a 50% chance of survival. If you don't know Uncle Parvo and have never seen him, Lucky You. Keep doing what you're doing and try to keep everything clean.

Signs and symptoms of canine parvovirus include the following:
Bloody diarrhea (often severe)
Fever.
Lethargy (lack of energy)
Loss of appetite.(that's almost the first thing that happens)
Malaise (discomfort associated with illness)
Rapid weight loss.(this happens so fast, puppy goes from chubby to bony in hours)
Vomiting.(Mostly in whitish foam, more like its vomiting its own saliva in a foamy way)
Dehydration( when the eyes becomes sunken)

Now to the Aim of this thread, Some of us have had dogs that survived Parvo while some of us haven't been that lucky.. Let's share our stories, we all would learn and be informed. Those with Parvo survivors, what did you do??details on how you treated them. Items used, drugs, everything worthy enough to be known. Those that don't have survivors, how did it happen, have you been able to decipher how it came into your kennel or compounds?? What treatment methods did you try??drugs?


Treatment will include the following:
IV fluids to counter dehydration
Antibiotics to prevent septicemia
Probiotics to replenish the normal intestinal flora
Injectable vitamins, especially Vitamins B & C to help the immune system
Colostrum to provide antibacterial elements to fight the infection within the gut
Glucosamine to coat the intestines


Me : Activated Charcoal
Novax
Ors solution for rehydration
One metoclopromide or something like that

Cimetidine tabs too

That all I used and the result was just wow

What's your Parvo story

My own puppy was 5 months old when he was attacked. it all started. with loss of appetite then the bloody poop and the foamy vomit but I didn't know it was parvo yet. I thought it had to do with his teething. When I took him to the vet, I failed to mention the foamy vomit cos I thought it was not relevant. I was very sure it was the teeth. The vet checked the teeth which were kind of loose and had blood at the base. He said it was normal. he then decided to take her temperature and noticed it was not normal( can't remember if it was high or low). He gave her a shot of vitamins and said it would help with the appetite.

It didn't work and it pooped the bloody poo again vomited the foamy vomit. When I called the vet again, he said it could be parvo. The next day, he placed him on IV fluids, antibiotics and vitamins (sorry I never got the names). The treatment was for about 5 days.

He suggested I gave him ORT and glucose water but he never drank them. so what worked for him was the iv fluids.
This dreadful episode lasted a week without my dog eating or drinking.

What I took from the experience is to give my doctor even the minutest information cos it might just be the key information.

Another thing is that the vet knew what he was doing and he is the kindest of them all. He was humane in his approach. treating my puppy like he was human. I know the love an affection really helped. He is my Incredible Dr Pol of Natgeo wild *wink*

And yes! I prayed, I prayed hard. So thank you Jesus.

The good news is that my dog made it!

Days 56,57 and 58. Ira's moods and energy levels have been fluctuating from very low to very high and so on. On day 57, I woke up to a very active Ira she even jumped on me something she has not done in a while. She ate her food hassle free. I added Irish potatoes to her food (it was not well mashed) she threw up and became very sick later on.

when I brought her evening ration, she could hardly stand on her legs. The food was repulsive and she avoided it they way humans would avoid poop. I got really scared. We wanted moving her from the backyard where she has been for a while now to her regular room in case the puppies were ready. We could not lift her it was like she weighed a ton.

She was too heavy and lazy to move. We then decided to entice her with bread and it so worked! She just uped and followed the bread like in the story of hansel and Gretel. Went to check on her a couple of times at night.

She had drank a lot of water almost a bucket full. we woke up to see a pool of pee in her room like it rained.

Today, day 58, her energy level has been relatively stable. Her appetite is not so great but she got something down.

There is less discharge in her eyes but the eyes are red than usual.

She is currently roaming round the compound since she doesn't move much and does not even bark at anything unlike before.

So sad to hear that nicky lost her pups. Any update now?
