Would love your thoughts on the article. The writer makes some points that I believe are essential if Africa desires to become a great success story in the future. - revision of our curriculum to mirror or at least bear a semblance to what is obtained elsewhere:US, Europe or Asia(China, Japan, S. Korea) - a willingness and readiness to visit our history and examine existing structures/legacies that could continue to impede our growth - boost our local industries in all aspects with greater focus on agriculture and power.
The situation is dire. Most black people are unable to envision a better future. I choose to believe all hope os not lost yet.
NB: This shouldnt turn to a 'share your sorrows' thread. I couldnt find much fault with the article. There is a part of all of us that recognizes the truth contained therein. We've all been in situations where someone immediately whips out the comparative " if to say na oyibo now". We are trapped in a very devastating loop where its far easier to reinforce the bad than to adopt the good. I could write epistles but Im getting rather stirred up here so I think I should stop. |

Christianity Etc › Pope Francis Declares Evolution And Big Bang Theory Are Real. . . by jayriginal(op): 3:32pm On Oct 29, 2014 |
The theories of evolution and the Big Bang are real and God is not “a magician with a magic wand”, Pope Francis has declared. Speaking at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the Pope made comments which experts said put an end to the “pseudo theories” of creationism and intelligent design that some argue were encouraged by his predecessor, Benedict XVI. Francis explained that both scientific theories were not incompatible with the existence of a creator – arguing instead that they “require it”. “When we read about Creation in Genesis, we run the risk of imagining God was a magician, with a magic wand able to do everything. But that is not so,” Francis said. He added: “He created human beings and let them develop according to the internal laws that he gave to each one so they would reach their fulfilment. “The Big Bang, which today we hold to be the origin of the world, does not contradict the intervention of the divine creator but, rather, requires it. “Evolution in nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation, because evolution requires the creation of beings that evolve.” The Catholic Church has long had a reputation for being anti-science – most famously when Galileo faced the inquisition and was forced to retract his “heretic” theory that the Earth revolved around the Sun. But Pope Francis’s comments were more in keeping with the progressive work of Pope Pius XII, who opened the door to the idea of evolution and actively welcomed the Big Bang theory. In 1996, John Paul II went further and suggested evolution was “more than a hypothesis” and “effectively proven fact”. Yet more recently, Benedict XVI and his close advisors have apparently endorsed the idea that intelligent design underpins evolution – the idea that natural selection on its own is insufficient to explain the complexity of the world. In 2005, his close associate Cardinal Schoenborn wrote an article saying “evolution in the sense of common ancestry might be true, but evolution in the neo-Darwinian sense – an unguided, unplanned process – is not”. https://www.independent.co.uk/incoming/article9822509.ece/alternates/w460/popes-francis.jpgGiovanni Bignami, a professor and president of Italy’s National Institute for Astrophysics, told the Italian news agency Adnkronos: “The pope’s statement is significant. We are the direct descendents from the Big Bang that created the universe. Evolution came from creation.” Giulio Giorello, professor of the philosophy of science at Milan’s University degli Studi, told reporters that he believed Francis was “trying to reduce the emotion of dispute or presumed disputes” with science. Despite the huge gulf in theological stance between his tenure and that of his predecessor, Francis praised Benedict XVI as he unveiled a bronze bust of him at the academy's headquarters in the Vatican Gardens. “No one could ever say of him that study and science made him and his love for God and his neighbour wither,” Francis said, according to a translation by the Catholic News Service. “On the contrary, knowledge, wisdom and prayer enlarged his heart and his spirit. Let us thank God for the gift that he gave the church and the world with the existence and the pontificate of Pope Benedict.” http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/pope-francis-declares-evolution-and-big-bang-theory-are-right-and-god-isnt-a-magician-with-a-magic-wand-9822514.html |

Lots of ignorance on display here from people who have no clue and adamantly refuse to enlighten themselves.
For me, I have mixed feelings. First of all, Law School results are hardly ever wonderful but there is something unusual about 4000 out of 6000 students failing (if the numbers are to be believed).
This is especially so when you consider that some of what is taught at the law school has been covered in part by their undergraduate program. One may be tempted to think that the students were not particularly studious but its better to give them the benefit of doubt for now.
What I see from most of the comments is pure bad belle. Whats up with beefing professionals?

In that beast you can max out 289hp with an economy of about 20/31(city/hgw MPG) unlike c240 of 168hp with an economy of about 19/25(city/hgw MPG) of same model year. Infact you could almost hit the performance of a c320, just about 194hp. And then with the benefit of w203 gearbox equivalent, inwhich case instead of kickdown or downshift you simply tap to make tremendous overwhelming 'shoot out' , no vehicle can stand you while overtaking in this manner. I used a friends own, who just bought it newly and doesn't really understand the car. I was making nonsense of all the cars on the road while travelling to Bayelsa, each time i tap the transmission, our heads hits the headrest with the swiftest movement i have ever noticed, he finally asked me if it was a manual transmission. U need to feel that machine, it's a wonder 4 cylinder.. Stop! Please stop it! You're tempting me |

MrAnony1: Here is a list of things I never said that you said.
I never said that you said that;
We dont divide We dont give in to natural instincts We cant separate the weak from the young We dont need government/police/instruments of the law People dont derive pleasure from the misery of others
I simply pointed out to you that arguing that you are kind because you are capable of being kind is just as good as saying that you are cruel because you are capable of being cruel. It still doesn't tell us anything about why you should choose to be kind as opposed to being cruel since you are obviously capable of both.
I am afraid but citing empathy and sharing in the "great struggle of humanity" are not valid reasons for why you do good especially since other people who do evil also share the same properties of empathy and the "great struggle of humanity".
Your reason is as bad as a person saying that the reason he tells lies and insults people is because he has a tongue. It will be perfectly in order to point out to the person that other people who also possess tongues don't lie and insult people and hence his reason is unacceptable.
If you have a valid reason for why you ought to do good then please let us hear it. So far you have only succeeded in blowing air Meh. Lost appetite for this merry go round. |

MrAnony1: The question was: Why do you do good? What is your reason?
That's not quite true
As humans, we share a common struggle. We experience pain and pleasure, we bond but we also divide. We can think and override natural instincts but we can also give in to them. We know we can live together, old and young, strong and feeble and we also know that we can also live apart and separate the weak from the strong. Sometimes we can help ourselves and do not need to be forced into doing so but we also recognize the necessity of laws, governments and a police force to compel us to help one another for those other times when we don't want to be helpful. We are fully capable of deriving pleasure from making life better for others and we are also fully capable of deriving pleasure in making life miserable for others.
The question you haven't answered is why make life better for others and not worse for them since we are fully capable of doing both? In other words, Why do you do good? (we will assume for the sake of argument that making life better for others is doing good)
I never said that I was compelled to do good. Here is a list of things I never said. I never said; We dont divide We dont give in to natural instincts We cant separate the weak from the young We dont need government/police/instruments of the law People dont derive pleasure from the misery of others Please if you can make an argument without importing baseless assertions, do so and lets hear it. I have told you why I do good. If I say I have empathy or I share in the great struggle of humanity, that ought to be clear enough. On no account have I stated as you are wont to say that there arent people who hold their fellow humans in contempt. Try again. |

Christianity Etc › Re: What They Don't Tell You About Atheism by jayriginal: 12:30am On Sep 03, 2014 |
MrAnony1: 1. Atheism is supposed to be the lack of a belief in deity (God) rather it is the convenient denial of God so as to go against conscience commit as many crimes one can get away with.
2. Atheism has no moral code or guidelines i.e. does not define good and evil hence serial rapists, serial killers, pedophiles, fraudsters are all justified as atheists.
3. The world's most hideous mass murderers were atheists namely Hitler and Stalin
4. For a group of people who don't believe in God, they go a long way to try and force this non-belief on others who don't share it and will even resort to name-calling and violence in some cases. It seems to me that they do this so as to constantly convince themselves that there is no God even though their consciences and their souls protest (heck they even deny the soul)
5. Atheists will always misuse science by quoting so called "scientific facts" as if they were some infallible creed (deliberately forgetting that fallibility is in fact the nature of science)
6. Atheists simply do not have any morals and they are quite comfortable attacking those with morals by calling them intolerant brainwashed fanatic bigots because it gives them some sort of a superiority complex.
7. Though they often claim to be logical, they mostly fail to provide logical arguments rather they resort to over-simplistic lines, quoting theists out of context and plain old mockery.
8. My question to Atheists; Justify your belief. Can you prove to me with 100% certainty that there is no God?
This is in response to similar posts by logicboy and other militant evangelist atheists on Nairaland. Bump for the records. OP claimed to have been an atheist once. Beware of those who only do good because of the fear of hell! |
