This is a repost from one of my projects, back in 2016. I was building a 100% solar-powered hostel for students, because we wanted to show that it could be done. In summary, we dealt with people vandalizing and breaking buildings, wasted materials, omoniles, paying twice for land, police taking money but not doing anything, LGA people stopping work, I got a cutlass on my arm (thank God it wasn't too bad), and so much more. The most memorable that I lost money was for:

1800k - land (paying twice)
400k - police issues/security
200k - misc mistakes by personnel
150k - roofing mistakes
240k - 2nd payment to LGA (didn't get a receipt the 1st time)

So, in addition to the reasonable costs of building (which includes land, tax, youths, materials, labour, transport), the overruns caused by all our issues is about 2.8M

That 2016 I really suffered enh... my life savings gone, with no sign of relief. I could not continue anything for over 1 year, but thankfully, things are looking up, and we're building out the estate this year and next. I don't consider it a whole loss, but a temporary setback.

I also got into a mini-importation business with a reputable Nairalander... I would import small electronics for hobbyists (Arduino, circuit boards, multimeters), and they would store in their warehouse. Customers would order from my website, and they would use their logistics to send to the customer. We made a few sales, but things were slow and didn't really pick up. About N700,000 worth of materials remains in their custody, but that person is no longer returning my calls or emails. I didn't even see the money from the few sales we had, and I have to write off that loss.

On two occasions, I lent 500k each to two different ladies, one to start provisions store, and another to be selling drinks. These were honest young ladies that people could vouch for, so I did my homework. Unfortunately due to personal circumstances, they had to use their profits for personal matters (hospital, helping their mother, etc). 2 years later, I'm still waiting for the loans to be repaid. I'm still hopeful, but this is yet another loss.

To total these major investment losses: 2.8 + .7 + .5 + .5 = 4.5M not counting other smaller business attempts that failed.

That last investment got me cracking up any money given to a woman is not considered an investment ooo. As long as u r not a bank or credit nd thrift society. Those r the organisations that can get their money back with thier complete interest.

We need to realise that workers wages has a disproportional effect on the budget because it is labour intensive

The budget for both the senate and house of reps in 2017 was around 70billion whereas the monthly wage bill of government workers was 165billion monthly or 2 trillion yearly

Assuming the the 2 houses decide to double their budget, the amount will rise by only 70billion

On the other hand the 67% rise in workers wages recently agreed upon will increase government spending by a whooping 1.34 trillion yearly

That is a differential of about 1,900%!

If Buhari had introduced austerity measures and slashed the bloated workforce by 50% this wage increase would have been affordable

Government was already borrowing money to pay the former salaries, will now borrow an extra 1.34trillion! Already debt servicing is already consuming about 40% of the budget

Populist Buhari is heading the economy towards the cliff!

Ur figures r sound nd ur argument is concrete but there r measures that can be put in place to curtail that huge percentage increase.

Kindly compare the value of 18k as at 2011 to the dollar and the value of 18k as at 2018 to the dollar...

All labour is saying is pay us the value of 18k as at 2011 now.

All other things have increased proportionately overtime except for d wages of workers.

Mind u the Govt already have obligations to pay its current debts within a long time frame, meaning we have been borrowing from A to pay B since the inception of democracy. That trend is never ending anytime soon.

Yes I do agree we shouldn't incure more debts but I dont see that hapenning wen we have buhari and atiku contesting for 2019 elections. They both will still sha borrow to finance the budget next year.

Too much money is wasted on recurrent expenditure on very unproductive and bloated civil service

The civil service needs to be mean and lean and very efficient. If that was the case salaries could even be 45000 and no one will bat an eyelid

In Singapore civil servants earn more than their counterparts in the private sector but have to be super productive. The government there wants a super productive civil service that is also incorruptible so pays high as well

I do agree with u on the excesses of govt spending. I believe we are all aware that before an expenditure is been made within the govt parastatals, it must have been budgeted for. The salaries of workers have already been put into consideration before presenting their final budgets which will definitely show a surplus at d end of d year. Question is... Why is it that wen we talk about an increase in d wages of workers, it seems like d economy will crumble. But wen other expenditures in d budget are exceeds way over what its supposed to b, everyone keeps mute nd its been blammed on the phrase "corruption". Mind u some states r currently paying within 25 to 30k before the minimum wage issue came about.

This problem started in 2014 when oil prices crashed and within a year, the monthly allocation was slashed by half. This was not even enough to pay salaries how much other government duties. States began owing salaries.

The sensible thing to have done would have been to slash the size of the bloated civil service in each state and at the federal level also.

The states were terrified downsizing the labour force for fear of losing elections. Akande, the first governor of Osun in 1999 sacked 3,000 unqualified teachers and voters promptly relieved him of his job.

I dont know who is fooling who? The FG that is borrowing money to pay workers or the NLC that is fully aware many states can barely pay their workers and now demanding an increase?

Most states will simply not pay workers worsening the issue of unpaid workers.

What we will have on ground right now reminds me of the old communist joke, "We pretend to work, they pretend to pay us"

If u only know the number of funds d state governments have received from 2014 till now u won't reason this way. What happened to the bailout fund that was given to them by FG from the federation account to offset salary arrears, we r not even talking about the funds received from the Paris club. What about their IGR or these Governors wanna tell us they dont generate revenue internally Let's leave d allocation from d federation account 1st. Let us see how many of them would come out on national television and tell the masses they won't pay the minimum wage wen it becomes a law. There and then u would see how these states funds r being misappropriated
