Former Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari Monday made public his intention to contest the 2015 presidential election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

8th Oct was the originally planned date for the announcement, however, sources revealed that Buhari had to delay the announcement till 15th October to allow for some of his associates who had travelled to Mecca for Hajj to return. Some other sources have alleged that it was really due to “paucity of funds”....

As Nigeria awaits the official certification as an Ebola-free country by the World Health Organisation (WHO) after it successfully contained the outbreak of the deadly viral disease, fears are rife that some visible lapses in the preventive efforts could reverse the gains made in this regards.

This is the outcome of investigations carried out by Sunday Independent, which revealed that the Federal Ministry of Education could be the culprit here.

Although the Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, insisted in a response to Sunday Independent that the Federal Government has not slowed down its efforts to check the deadly disease, which claimed eight lives, visits to some schools across the country by our correspondents have revealed obvious lapses in the monitoring of the preventive measures in schools, even as others are trying to keep up with standard.

This was particularly observed in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where some public and private schools partially resumed before the October 8 date after a forced break to avoid the spread of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), which broke out in July.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered thousands of troops stationed near the Ukrainian border to return to their bases, Russian media report.

Mr Putin's spokesman said about 17,600 soldiers on training exercises in the Rostov region would be pulled back.

Russia has previously announced troop withdrawals that Nato and the US say were not actually carried out.

Russia has been accused of supplying troops and weapons to separatist rebels in east Ukraine - claims it denies.

The latest order comes ahead of a planned meeting between Mr Putin and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Friday.
Ukrainian troops have been fighting pro-Russia rebels in the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk since April, in a conflict that has killed more than 3,500 people.

The two sides agreed a truce on 5 September, but fighting has continued, especially in and around Donetsk.

It was complete commotion yesterday at Kirikiri Medium Prison, La­gos as inmates went on rampage in protest over what they described as highhandedness of the new Deputy Comptroller General. According to eyewitnesses, several prisoners allegedly seized the opportunity to escape, even as officials debunked the escape claim. However, the prison’s spokesperson, Ope Fatinikun, said these claims of escape will be verified when counts are taken of the inmates.
