Former FCT Minister Nasiru El-Rufai on Thursday officially declared his intention to contest the Kaduna State governorship on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) come 2015. El-Rufai made this known in Kaduna during his visit to the party’s office. “I came along with my colleagues to formally inform the state branch of the APC of my intension to contest for the governorship of Kaduna State. ”We think that it is a necessary first step to inform the party officially that this is our intention before making any formal declaration,” he said. He also congratulated the party leadership for its efforts in unifying the various factions and groups that constituted the APC. He said the chairman of the party and his team did a great job in reconciling all the warring factions “and we think it is important to encourage and ask them to do more”. ”As part of the reconciliation process, I have also offered to, if I am needed, help and forge reconciliation and unite the party. I will be happy to be part of any such initiative,” he said. According to him, ”we came to present the party with some vehicles because the party has nothing or little in terms of operational materials. As the war against Insurgents gets tougher, President Goodluck Jonathan Wednesday restated his government's readiness to dialogue with Boko haram insurgents (and other aggrieved persons) with a view to finding a lasting solution to the problem of insurgency in the country. While seeking support for security forces in their battle against terrorists, the president said that the country had a lot to gain by remaining together as one united nation than being divided. He noted that efforts to bring the insurgency to a successful end were ongoing and they would not stop until victory was achieved. In his radio and television broadcast to mark the nation’s 54th independence anniversary, Jonathan, however, admitted that despite the fact that the administration and the security agencies were doing their best to curtail the activities of insurgents, the fact that they had continued to unleash their reign of terror meant that there was still a lot to be done and that their activities were still a threat to peace. The President of the Senate, David Mark, on Thursday reassured PDP supporters that despite recent developments in Ekiti State, Mr. Ayo Fayose would be inaugurated as the state governor on October 16. Mark stated this at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, at an event where Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State formally defected to the Peoples Democratic Party from the Labour Party. Fayose had been in the eye of the storm lately for allegedly leading thugs to beat up a judge in the state. The state Chief Judge, Justice Ayodeji Daramola, has tabled before the National Judicial Council a petition accusing the state’s Governor-elect and the police of complicity in the attack on judges and court workers in the state last week. The National Judicial Council on Thursday demanded the Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba, to thoroughly investigate the attack on judges in Ekiti State and bring the culprits to justice without delay. The NJC at its emergency meeting presided over by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Aloma Mukhtar, who is also the chairman of the council, also asked Abba to provide adequate protection for the judges in the state. A statement by the council’s Acting Director of Information Unit, Mr. Soji Oye, said the council condemned in strong terms the attacks on the court on September 22 and 25, 2014. The NJC’s emergency meeting on Thursday followed the petition by the Chief Judge of Ekiti State, Justice Ayodeji Daramola, to both the NJC and the Commissioner of Police in the state, alleging that the state’s Governor-elect, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, was the one who led the thugs that attacked the court. Oye said in a statement that the various petitions by the Justice Daramola and others were looked into. He stated, “Following the recent unfortunate and worrisome incidents in Ekiti State Judiciary, particularly in the High Court Complex, Ado-Ekiti, the National Judicial Council held an Emergency Meeting on October 2, 2014, under the Chairmanship of Hon. Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar (GCON) and considered the various complaints and petitions forwarded to it. “At the end of the meeting, Council decided as follows: In very strong terms condemned the attacks on the Judiciary and Judicial Officers in general across the country and in particular, the one carried out in High Court Complex, Ado-Ekiti, on September 22 and 25, 2014. “Requested the Inspector-General of Police to take over and investigate the alleged attacks on Hon. Justices John Adeyeye and Isaac Olusegun Ogunyemi, some members of staff of the court and vandalisation of property of the High Court of Justice, Ado-Ekiti and bring the culprits to justice. “Requested the Inspector-General of Police to, as a matter of urgency, provide adequate security for judicial officers and the Judiciary in Ekiti State. All petitions forwarded by all parties to the council on the matter are being looked into.” Meanwhile, human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), has commended the NJC’s intervention, but asked the Nigerian Bar Association to do more than condemning the incident by applying for fiat to prosecute the culprits.
