Nairaland / General / Migrating Students To Take IELTS Tests At Home. by Jeanjohnny(m): 4:33pm On Oct 07, 2021
Test takers around the world will have the option to take their secure test online when IELTS Online starts global rollout early in 2022.

IELTS Online is a new way to take IELTS Academic, the world’s leading test of English for international higher education. IELTS Online will allow students to take the test from their own home or another suitable location as they embark on their journey to achieving their study and career goals.

The examination body said that IELTS tests would no longer be restricted to physical tests as it is at the moment once it unveils ‘IELTS Online’ from 2022.
“The test will have the same content and format as the existing pen-and-paper and computer-delivered IELTS tests. This includes a real-time face-to-face speaking test, delivered online by trained IELTS examiners,” the statement partly read.

According to the body, IELTS Online will cover all four skills of IELTS Academic – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. It will also have the same rigorous assessment by trained examiners, and a speaking test with a human examiner giving a true indication of the test taker’s ability to communicate effectively in English.

The statement also quoted Christine Nuttall, Managing Director IELTS at Cambridge Assessment English, as saying, “IELTS Online is the next step in enhancing the test taker experience around the world. It will give test takers greater flexibility in taking the IELTS test. It will also mean faster results for test takers, as validated results will be available as soon as three days after the test. By making the world’s leading test available online, we aim to empower even more people to take IELTS and follow their ambitions.”

“In developing IELTS Online, we are bringing all the existing benefits of IELTS for test-takers and recognising organisations,” Nuttall said, adding; “IELTS Online will provide flexibility and confidence, using cutting edge AI and state-of-the-art security features to complement the expertise of IELTS examiners.”

IELTS is “trusted by over 11,000 organisations as a reliable indicator of true to life ability to communicate in English. The language test is also recognised for migration across Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.”

Thousands of young, ambitious Nigerian migrants annually take IELTS tests physically in different locations all over Nigeria, as part of the requirements to secure admissions into universities overseas or work abroad. The test cost over N60,000 per time and expires after 24 months.

According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, there are over 71,000 Nigerians currently studying abroad, with the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada as top destinations for the teeming young Nigerians.

The UK, US Canada, Australia, and European countries have been attractive of late to Nigerians under 30 or in their early 30s looking for boundless vistas of opportunities abroad.

Sports / What Are Some Of The Nicknames Given To Chelsea Players In Your Viewing Centre? by Jeanjohnny(m): 6:42pm On May 07, 2021
Chelsea football fans in Nigeria have certain peculiarities that are very obvious. Well, if you're the type that watch football matches in viewing centres, you should know what I mean.
As a non-Chelsea fan, you have to be mentally prepared to deal with the wildness of their fans, else you'd have to take the nearest exit door.

One thing I find humorous is that almost every Chelsea players have a unique nickname being called by their Fans once they are in possession of the ball or about to be substituted into the field of play. These are the names I could vividly remember.

1. Ngolo Kante - Irunmole. His dark skin could be one reason why he was given this nickname.

2. Reece James - Yahoo Boy(coloured dreads)

3. Christian Pulisic - Ejo (Snake)

4. Antonio Rudiger - Ijaya(Strongman) /Rudeboy/Igboro

5. Tammy Abraham - Father Abraham

6. Edouard Mendy - Omo Ologo (Star Boy)

7. Ben Chilwell - Ben 10

8.What are some funny nicknames given to these players in your viewing centre?
Feel free to add yours.

I guess I've heard something like that... Someone that isn't originally a gay or lesbian but practices the act to satisfy their sexual desire.

Enrolling a child to a boarding school, to me, it's a no no.
Because some children suffer abuse in day schools, finds it difficult to tell their parents due to pressure or threat from the abusers, not to talk of boarding schools where there is no one to defend them.

So, I won't support the idea of enrolling a child to a boarding school.

Parents should be approachable to their children.
A parent whose child cannot talk to out of fear is not on the right track of parenting.
Exactly... A well to do Man who's also my close friend said never in his life will he enrol his child as a boarding student. I guess he knows his reasons.

Education / Why Parents Should Monitor Their Child/Ward: See What My Student Told Me by Jeanjohnny(m): 1:54pm On Dec 29, 2020
Parenting is not an easy job, with responsibilities that seem to change every day. The daily tasks and roles you perform as a parent are bound to change as your child gets older.
In light of the recent news related to the Deeper Life High School student that was allegedly sexually molested. As a Parent, Monitoring who is in your child’s life or what your child does is especially critical to protecting them from harm or abuse. Monitoring in the sense that you establish firm guidelines and limits for your child to keep track of what is going on in his or her social world.

What a student revealed to me
As a parent, nothing beats your ward/child being a day student as compared to a being a boarding student. I had this conversation with a former student of mine that graduated recently from secondary school. She happened to attend a well-renowned school in Lagos as a boarder. She revealed to me the real reason why her parents had to withdraw her from the school after spending two terms.
She said most of the girls in her hostel practiced lesbianism and the pressure was having toil on her academic performance in one way or the other.
It became so bad that some of the girls do touch sensitive parts of her body without her consent (either when she's taking her bath or when she's asleep). If it hadn't taken the grace of God... She might have given in to the act.
It's just a pity the society we live in will continue to have negative impacts on teenagers and youths.
Apart from your child being at risk of being homosexual, other negative effects of boarding school on a child includes bullying, emotional trauma due to loneliness, malnutrition, captivity and the likes.

Conclusion
I believe as a parent, it's best to start monitoring your child early on, in ways that are age appropriate. This will help your child accept your involvement as a part of life. The earlier you begin monitoring, the easier it will be to continue this open communication as your child gets older.

I have sent email twice to the international admissions office and included some CC's...
I'm yet to get a response from them. It's over two weeks now.

Please permit me to divert your attention a little.

If I were you, I’d do a one year postgraduate certificate degree in education (PGCE) program preferably in a private uni in Nigeria cus

1. You get to graduate on time with no ASUU wahala and
2. Its cheaper than doing it in the UK

After that you can then apply for qualified teacher status (QTS) even though you might have to complete the initial teacher training (ITT) in UK.

The only downside to this is that overseas trained teachers take a four year route of training before they are awarded the QTS but it’s worth Cus u will still be paid while training and working the job

I suggest this Cus of ur background and maths teachers are in high demand in the U.K.

If this sounds interesting to you, I suggest you make further enquiries about it.

I'm aware about the high demand of Mathematics teacher in the U. K. I have thought about it... My Sister also advised me to go for PGCE in Mathematics in any available UK University. It was kinda tough making a final decision. I decided to opt in for Data Science, because Data Scientist are also in very high demand in the UK.

I may also look at the possibility of trying to do per time teaching as an unqualified Mathematics teacher through the Assessment Only (A.O) route with a prospect of achieving QTS, that'd definitely be after my studies. To save cost there will be no need doing a PGCE.

Thanks for your Input. I really appreciate Bro.

Python is quite easy to learn especially for beginners like yourself if you put your heart and mind to it. Go to where your heart leads you. I'm pretty sure all three or four universities aren't offering the same course modules so choose the one whose course modules appeals to you the most.
Thanks a lot Bro. I will put it into consideration.

When did you get the mail from Bournemouth? Because I applied there too, same course but I got a different mail stating the scholarship and a different mail for my offer. So maybe you can be patient or send them a mail for the scholarship if you decide that's where you want to go
Hello,
I got the first mail 4 days ago stating that I should pay a deposit of £2000. They also said that they may be requesting additional information because it has not been included in my original application and will need it in order for us to make a decision.

The next day... I received another email with a formal offer letter in htm format and other attachments.
I have sent an email to the International Admissions team specifying the scholarship aspect.
Thanks Bro

I received two offers from them. The first one took about 3 weeks...that was early March. In July towards the deadline for deposit, I changed my mind and applied for another course which took about 11days...my reference wasn’t really a delay for me and the second offer came faster because I was in contact with the school Rep for West Africa.
Yes, you can send them a mail to remind them, I did that alot they probably got tired of me..lol
All the best
Alright. Thanks!

I haven't received mine. I'm thinking of sending an email.

Congratulations on your offer sometimes when applying to a school there are certain factors you need to consider such as

Course Modules are you sure you can do the modules? Are the modules tailored to fit into your career.

Accreditation, do what to say behind after your masters. Does your future career need a professional accreditation before you get a good job.

Is your School/Department partner with companies or do they hold career fairs for students?

You need to consider these things and secondly you need to have other reasons why you choose a school because we are not sure if interviews will resume later at TLScontact. And you can't tell them you are doing the course because of Job access. There is no job that comes at ease after graduation even if you graduate from the best school.

Thanks for your input.

1. Well, I have a Mathematics background and I have been teaching Further Mathematics close to 4 years now. I just wanted a switch in my career path and being that Data Science is kinda related to my first degree and I can demonstrate numerate skills. I don't think I will have much problem with the modules.
The only problem I may have in which I'm trying to devote my time at the moment is my 'programming skills' especially in the area of Python.

2. Data Science being one of the sexiest Job is in shortage worldwide and it's even listed on UK shortage occupation. Who wouldn't wanna stay back with the proposed PSW that will be introduced mid 2021? Staying back may be an option. Bournemouth and University of East Anglia are accredited by BCS.
Meanwhile, being one of Jobs in shortage ... I don't really think accreditation is compulsory to getting a good Job. If there are... I don't think it will be a problem.

3. Yes, the Universities have partnerships with companies. There are options for placements(more like internships) with their industry partners at Stirling and Bournemouth.

The bolded looks funny tho'... No one would wanna try such. Thanks once again.

Hello Everyone,
Towards the end of last month, I applied to Bournemouth University for Data Science and Artificial intelligence, University of East Anglia and University of Stirling all M.Sc Data Science.
The choice of picking the Institutions was mainly due to their ranking with UEA at 200th, followed by Stirling at 301 - 350 and Bournemouth at 401 - 450, affordable tuition less discount and Bournemouth offering 30 weeks placement which is optional.

This week, I received an offer letter from Bournemouth University(Tuition fees £14,500 + Placement year £850), there was no form of discount stated in my offer letter. Though it was stated on their website that a discount of £3500 is to be awarded for Academic Excellence... I don't know if it is a norm at their end.
On the other hand, University of Stirling stated that from my tuition fees of £16950, a discount of £4000 will be given.

I'm still kinda confused on which University to chose... Although Stirling has a better ranking than BU and both 've got a pretty nice course module.
Is there anyone studying in any of these University or maybe from past experience?
What's it like studying at BU or Stirling, ease of access of getting a Job after graduation (as one is in England and the other in Scotland), accommodation and any other input would be of greater value?

Looking forward to your response. Many thanks!

1)If the document you sent are original, you don't need to go the high court for certification. Like me all my document are original and I got a feedback. Most time the university that are free or the school pay uniassist for application fee are always slow. Like Uni Potsdam was a little slow than HHNE, because I pay a fee for HHNE and Uni Potsdam was free, but after few week it was OKAY.

2) Most times those are the document, you can check the school site or talk to the course coordinator. The person will mail you the requirement or refer you to the place on their website.
Oh okay... Thanks for your input Bro. I will see to No. 2

It usually takes at least 2 weeks for Uni-assist to evaluate your documents and forward your application to the school(s) you applied to. Mine took almost three weeks. Uni-assist will inform you via email when the evaluation is completed and your application is forwarded. Since you say it's been just a week, I'll say be patient.

I do not know about FU berlin, but for potsdam you are not required to send any physical documents via post. This information is available on potsdam's website. Just ensure you print out the application form from Uni-assist, sign it and upload back to Uni-assist.
Alright, Thanks Bro. I'll have to be patient then.

Hello everyone, I'm a newbie here.
I applied to about 4 Universities (two of the Universities were through their online portal - TU Dortmund and Hildesheim, while the others Uni potsdam and FU Berlin, through Uniassist Portal) all for M.Sc Data Science.
I received an acknowledgement from the former that my applications were well received and wait for a decision.
The only issue I have with the latter (Uniassist). Over a week now that I applied, I keep seeing "In evaluation, payment received'' under my application tab. I uploaded scanned copies of my original documents including motivation letter with the application form I downloaded after paying the handling fee. I also received an email saying "Thank you. Your payment was successful and we received your application. Attached please find your application overview, the fees and a PDF of our Terms & Conditions".
Please, what else should I do?
1. Do I go ahead and certify my documents at the high court and send to Uniassist through courier immediately or wait till they send another mail asking me to send my documents?
2.The documents I plan on sending are my school leaving certificate with Waec scratch card, University certificate, and my transcript, IELTS(optional). Are there other documents that are required to be sent apart from this?
Looking forward to your replies. Thanks!

Nairaland / General / What Steps Should I Take To Make A Gift Of Deed? by Jeanjohnny(m): 7:46pm On Jan 27, 2020
I have a plot of Land. I want to gift my younger Brother. Land documents such as C/O and others are intact.

Is it necessary to go to the court to swear an affidavit or I just create a document in form of templates for witnesses to sign?

Any advice from someone that's been gifted a property or from anyone that has gifted someone before?

I can see the documents they asked me to upload but I'm a bit confused as to where the police report, IELTS score card and other documents I see people talking about is supposed to fall under.
I would really appreciate it if someone can break it down for me.
Also my dad is my sponsor. I dunno if this information would be valuable as well.
