A bigger gamble is playing with a weaker keeper in such a high profile game. We need the best goalkeeper in our goal.
Fielding Akpeyi is not a gamble. We have seen him in action for the SE against Egypt in a high profile game just as this. We know what he can bring to the table. There is this popular saying, which goes thus: "The devil you know is better than the Angel you don't know".

Sorry. I will tell Yara Yara to fix your teeth. He learnt some dentistry skills watching TheSuperNerd unplug teeth from some skulls.

To the topic. I get the fear and criticism that goes with young players playing. They are mostly the target of criticism even when they are not wrong.

However, there are those enlightened enough to know right from wrong.

I feel we need the best legs and hands possible. If the youngsters are the best, we play them. Fortune favours the Brave. Shielding Alampasu from criticism is not the right way to make him grow.

I will take a quote from Van Gaal. Not precisely how he said it but close.

"I FOUND MY OWN RONALDO AND HIS NAME IS PATRICK KLUIVERT. I AM THROWING HIM TO THE LIONS TO SHOW THEM WHAT HE IS MADE OF."

No tension. Let us field our best team.
Ah i hope say no be from monkey skull, because if na from there, then i prefer to stay teethless. Lol
You said Ronaldo, right, he is not a keeper, so his position allows for mistakes, which most times does not affect the outcome of a match. But keepers position is way too important for us to gamble with in a high profile game like this. The keeper serves as the chief guardian of the team. So he shoulders so many responsibility of keeping his team in the game. So such position can get a new keeper gittery in a high profile match with so many things at stake. I don talk tire say i no dey against fielding new player, so far say him position no dey that sensitive. Ah don tire, make i go hide. Lol

I am not Fearing you. It seems you have not heard about my boxing gloves.

As for Kemi Adeosun and Okonjo-Iweala, it is clear. The experienced one, Madam Okonjo-Iweala knows babash. Lied repeatedly while dipping her hands into the ECA to make it look as if things were rosy in the country.

She wasted a windfall of Crude Oil sales and landed us in this mess. Anyone criticising Adeosun for the current mess never sat down to calculate why we are in this mess.

Despite low Crude Sales, for the first time in recent years we are taking effort to curb our problems. For instance, we are making importers of petrol carry the burden of Forex for importation. We stopped the wastage of our Foreign reserves by encouraging local production of food and stopping importation.

This is a football thread. I would have talked further about it. But, this is a case of ability trumping experience hands down. Tiri Gbosa for Auntie Kemi.

By the way, take this one for Challenging me.
Ah ah wetin i do na, person no fit play with you again, see now you don remove all my teeth. I no fit talk again, but at least i still get fingers to type. Lol.
Back to the matter. I know is not her fault, that is why i said, might not be her fault. I know the circumstances surrounding our recession. But people her blaming her due to her lack of top experience compared to Iwela. This i don't want Alampasu to face or Rohr. Because, people are going to blame both of them, most especially if he makes mistake that is costly and we get a bad result. They will then ask you why didn't you go with a test and trusted hand, knowing the importance and magnitude of the game. Same people will start criticizing them and calling them names. This i think we should avoid.

What are you waiting for? Throw kick. Lol.

I am saying that, I disagree with that understanding of National team you do not take risk with young players. Maradona was a small boy when he became key for Argentina. CR7 was a young boy playing for Portugal in the Euros. Renato Sanches, we saw him as a small boy win the Man of the match in the Euros.

The reason why it looks different in the National team is because of plenty competition for each role. So it is easy to find a better matured player who broke into the squad a long time ago than a younger one.

For instance, it is difficult to find youngsters better than Alonso and Busquets in the Spanish National team. Alonso and Busquets are there because they are better, not because they are experienced.

In Nigeria, it is difficult to find a better keeper than Enyeama. He was our number one because he was the best. Not because he was experienced.

It is about finding the best, not experience.
Am saying the keepers position. I have no problem with new players we need a tested and trusted hand. Akpeyi has handled some tough games for SE in the past and did well against SA and Egypt. No tell me say we lost that match against Egypt ooh, because our attack wasn't that strong. Let me give you an example, Kemi Adeosun, is being criticize for our economic recession, even when it might not be her fault. You ask them why? They ask you what position has she held in the past? Some are even calling for Okonjo Iwela, due to are past position in world bank, that is what we call experience. Why don't we put a talented first class fresh graduate and see if they are not going to come for your head, eventually things go wrong. See, if you make me vex this morning eeh. I go come your house through internet connection, and if I eventually come, prepare for 3rd world war. Smiles, lol. Happy Sunday!

Every position. Pique was about 19 or 20 when he became one of the best defenders in the World. If a youngster at that age can become so commanding and brilliant, which other role deserves caution?

De Gea was 18 when he became a big part of a successful Atletico Madrid. If you are good enough, you are old enough.
ooooh i go fight with you oh! Try to get my point. National team not club football. Have stated the factors surrounding these two. National team has limited games for error, which can make a new player nervous. Most especially this Algeria match, where the stake is high, the crowd, pressure for you to impress and much more. Please try to understand my stance on this match. So fielding Alampasu can make or break him

To mention the word "Experience" is like a taboo to TheGoodJoe. grin
I think we should know when to put talent ahead of experience. You can't put talent ahead of experience when dealing with some vital positions, just as head of institutions, world bank, contruction companies, to mention but a few. You just have to gain experience to be able to handle difficult times, pressure, competition and so much more. We are not disputing talent for a bit. You just have to know when to put one first before the other.

Mikel made Rohr's list based on his exceptional performances at the Olympics. Watching the Olympics, it was clear he is a special talent. One who was among the best in the team.
So what bases did he use in selecting mikel for the Algeria clash. Remember mikel has not played a match for almost a month now. That is where the exception to some rules comes in. We all know that the world most times goes for experience in some vital position but that does not undermine talent. You just want to be careful, so that things does not go against you, because people are quick to criticize you when you make the unsual decision and it backfires.

Overtime, I have studied it, Westerhof had no place for experience. He only had space for the best. As soon as a regular drops form, he had a younger replacement ready. It was after Westerhof went that the competition dropped and I started hearing a player should keep his place because of experience.
Experience counts just as talent(best player at that moment), it all depends on how you balance things out. Remember when Rohr said he is going to pick is players according to their performance in their club, but he made exceptions to some players. Mikel was part of the exceptions he made, that is what we call experience playing is part. So we must at all times know when to balance experience and the best talent at the moment. There are some position in life that needs experience or talent or both. Happy saturday.

The reason why it is difficult to find a young keeper in such positions is most times, most National teams have two top keepers who are ahead in abilities than the younger ones.

As I said, if Enyeama and Ikeme were in the team today, we would not have this debate. What I am pointing out is that, Enyeama and Ikeme will Outshine most of our other keepers in training. They will not start because of experience but ability.

That is the same fate this time. We have our top two keepers out and who ever mans the post should get there based on ability and not experience.

When De Gea and Asenjo were young promising talents, Reina, Cassilas and Valdes were ahead of them in ability.
Ok then, we are cool like that. The key point is for the SE to come out with maximum point.

Due to the sensitivity of the goalkeeper position, we need the best after thorough screening in camp. What I am saying is that, if thorough screening shows a youngster is better than an experienced hand, then it is best to go with the youngster.

We need the best. Not what people think or expect. Just as you tried to play the nerves card, there is also a big case for ability. We need the best in goal.
Have there been a time a keeper debut for his national team in an important and highly rated match? Am not sure there is any, even if there is, you can easily count it. What was the result? Alampasu needs that synergy between him and the divenders which Akpeyi has a little of. The confidence of a keeper plays great role in the whole team. If the keeper isn't that confident, the team may be a bit conservative going forward, thereby affecting flow of play and so many more i can't start explaining. But if you don't see things from my own point of view, is fine by me. This stuff is getting too lengthy, let's let it slide and hope for an injury free squad. But still i get your valid point. Peace

TheGoodJoe:

How can you insist on going with a tested hand, especially with a possibility of better options. It just does not add. An automatic shirt for Akpeyi is a wrong decision. He must prove capable.

Training is different from match games, so I guess there is no reason to train due to match conditions is different.

Please, training is the way to identify the best talents. Just as Ndidi had a poor game, experienced and tested hands have poor games repeatedly. I think in 2002, Inter Milan's last game of the season, Inter Milan were on top the table and needed to win the last game to win.

Ronaldo De Lima who was one of the best players in the World had an atrocious game. One of the worst in his career. Due to his poor game, Inter Milan lost the league title to Roma.

Ronaldo De Lima wept like a baby after the coach subbed him. So all these tested hands/new hands, are factors beyond knowledge.
Am not saying training is not important. For a new keeper as Alampasu the probability of him being a bit nervous or shaky is higher than that of Akpeyi. Majority of people will go with Akpeyi, due to the factors on ground as a new keeper and a tested keeper. Let me make this clear, the keepers position is the most sensitive of all the position in a football team, and that is why they don't change keepers as they do to other players. Take for example, you can play with a player down or more, you can even play without a manager, but you dare not play without a keeper. You want make i tell you wetin go happen? Na basketball score you go get. Please am not talking about players making a debut but keepers.

My point is, you can not ascertain nervousness but you can ascertain who is the better talent. So why drop a player for what is not sure for something that is sure.
There is no certainty that a good player in training will not make mistakes during the main match, just like omeruo and ndidi. Training is different from main match, due to so many factors, for example, the crowd, high expectations from you, what is at stake and so much more. In training, you feel relax and play your A-game. So for a new guy, is kind of a gamble, there is high probability of such happening. I get your drift, but for this one, please let just go with a tested hand (Akpeyi).

You can not attribute a reaction of someone to the same reaction of others. Remember, the other teams with these young keepers had quality keepers already.

If Enyeama or Ikeme was in camp, this discussion will not take place. I am talking of the current keepers selected. An 18 year old De Gea who made his debut for Atletico Madrid and later helped the team to win the Europa League and UEFA Super Cup will bench Ezenwa and Akpeyi.
That is why i said club football is different from national team. Due to the limited match in the national team, your mistake may be costly, and thinking of that may make a debutant feel a bit nervous. Am not disputing Alampasu's talent, he is a great guy. It is normal for we human in general to have that nervousness when starting something for the first time, most especially with limited time. Get my point, with limited time.

Who told u Ikeme wasn't that excellent in Tanzania? Btw he did so right after losing his club place to a costly mistake. On paper he was not the best choice but football isn't played on paper.
Was he that excellent compared to our last match. And to think of it tanzania was a lesser opposition to zambia. Let us forget about this argument jor. Time to pray for an injury free SE.

How do you know Alampasu will be anxious? You are judging based on your belief. Not on what you are sure of.

There are many young keepers who made debuts and put in brilliant performances.

So you will prefer us dropping a better option because of a belief that the better option can get anxious.
Did they debut for their national team in an important and highly tensed game? That is the question. We all know that we as human, tend to feel a bit uncomfortable starting or doing something for the first time, be it a new job, project or whatsoever. Ok take for example, Ikeme wasn't that excellent in his first game for SE, but with time he became better.

I do not disagree that Iheanacho has enough experience. I think we should kill the word experience. That I my point. We can not tag Iheanacho an experienced player but he is experienced enough.

The question should be, is Iheanacho good enough for the team? It is easier to make the right decision. Yes.

Was Iheanacho better than Bony last season? Yes. That would have saved Pellegrini the stress of juggling playing Bony because of experience over Nacho.

When Rohr goes to camp with his lads. His job is to find the best keeper. The experience talk is a big distraction from clear choices.
We are not talking about having so much experience, but the anxiety that comes with doing something for the first time in a new terrain. Assuming if it was to be a new player, there wouldn't be much concern. But the keeper's position is more sensitive than other position.

But all of football is a risk although some risks are more sane and more manageable compared to others.

I wonder what y'all think of Ben Carson's so-called gambles on some surgical cases that had 10% or even worse 8% survival chance.

All na risk... Akpeyi, Ezenwa or Alampasu... All na risk. Period!!!

I get your point. It was not just Akpeyi that was woeful that day, majority of the players were. That surely can affect the confidence of a keeper. In the final of 2008 olympic we played against argentina, osaze the captain, was jittery due to other of his team mates who were afraid of messi and the rest. So try to view it from such perspective. We can not gamble with this match, because is more like an automatic ticket if we win and cam vs zambia play a draw. We would have 4 points advantage against our opponents, who would then play with fear, anger and anxiety.

Why are you guys always keen on "can freeze"? Even experience goalkeepers and players freeze. Not just young keepers. Any keeper can have a bad day. What counts is how well a team prepared.

Opting for a weaker choice will mean going with a less quality keeper. Hart, James and co. disappointed on big stages. So making it look as if it is only young players that disappoint does not add up.

We go with the best choice in camp, after drills and scrimmage games.
The probability of it happening to Alampasu is higher than Akpeyi, just as in the early matches of U17 world cup. People tend to get a bit jittery or nervous when embarking on a new challenge.
Sports / Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2023, 2025 And 2026 World Cup by Jefersoun: 3:46pm On Nov 04, 2016
I think Alampasu is a great talent, but considering the variables, akpeyi should be between the sticks. Alampasu has never kept for the SE in a competitive match of such magnitude. There is no much room for mistake in this world cup qualifier due to the limited games, which can make alampasu feel a bit nervous and shaky. But you can't compare it with club football where there are a lot of games and room to correct your mistakes, which makes you feel a bit relax and confident. So I think we should go with Akpeyi. We can try Alampasu in other less tensed games for a start.

Enyeama's case was far different from Mikel. He buried his mum, flew out of Nigeria to camp the next day and arrived on a Monday.

This was not a case of stripping off Enyeama's captain band but during his time of pain.

The pain, stress and hatred got to his head.
God bless you for this explanation.
