LEADERSHIP, the Abuja national newspaper four of whose journalists were summoned by the police today, are being detained on the orders of President Goodluck Jonathan, the newspaper has said in a statement. As SaharaReporters reported previously, the journalists were invited to meet with the police in connection with a story the newspaper published last week about a presidential directive to muzzle political opposition, the supporting document of which appeared in the paper. The statement, signed by the company’s Group Managing Director, Azubuike Ishiekwene, named the four journalists as Chinyere Fred-Adebulugbe; Tony Amokeodo; Chibuzor Ukaibe; and Chuks Ohuegbe. Mrs. Fred-Adebulugbe, the title’s Director of Human Capital who led the group, said that after they had given written statements to Deputy Inspector-General of Police Peter Gana who interviewed them, they were abruptly told they would not be allowed to leave unless they disclosed their source. “We told them that it would be unethical to disclose our source and asked them to charge us to court, if they wanted,” she said. “They said they wanted to have the document. We said the bromide had been published and wondered why they were making such a fuss, since they said the document was a work of fiction.” LEADERSHIP described the latest development as “a calculated and brazen affront” on press freedom, and expressed consternation that a supposedly elected government has sunk so low. “President Jonathan and his handlers need to tell Nigerians and the civilised world why they have suddenly moved from describing the document as “fiction,” to a do-or-die obsession with knowing the source; they need to tell Nigerians most of who now live in mortal fear of their personal safety and security, if clamping down on the press has now become a priority sport,” the statement said, expressing resolve to hold the government to account as enshrined in the constitution. “We stand by our story and will neither be cowed nor intimidated by the strong-arm tactics of President Jonathan nor by the puerile attempts by his spokesmen – Doyin Okupe and Dr. Reuben Abati – to tarnish our report,” the statement said. Full text of the statement: Four journalists with LEADERSHIP Newspapers have been detained at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, on the orders of President Goodluck Jonathan. The journalists, Mrs. Chinyere Fred-Adebulugbe; Mr. Tony Amokeodo; Mr. Chibuzor Ukaibe; and Mr. Chuks Ohuegbe, had reported at the Force Headquarters on Monday morning to honour an invitation by the police. The Director, Human Capital and former LEADERSHIP Sunday Editor, Mrs. Fred-Adegbulugbe, who led the journalists said, “After the journalists finished writing statements, DIG Peter Gana suddenly excused himself on a call from IGP Mohammed Abubakar. “We were later told that we would not be allowed to leave except if we produced the source of the story. It was clear that this was not the call of the police. It is from President Goodluck Jonathan. “We told them that it would be unethical to disclose our source and asked them to charge us to court, if they wanted. They said they wanted to have the document. We said the bromide had been published and wondered why they were making such a fuss, since they said the document was a work of fiction. “The have made it clear that we would not be released except we give them the document. We can’t get out. I was escorted to use the toilet after begging.” This is a calculated and brazen affront on press freedom; we are bereft that a supposedly elected government will come this low. We demand the unconditional and immediate release of our journalists – Mrs. Chinyere Fred-Adebulugbe (Director, Human Capital); Chuks Ohuegbe (Managing Editor); Tony Amokeodo (Group News Editor); and Chibuzor Ukaibe (Political Reporter). President Jonathan and his handlers need to tell Nigerians and the civilised world why they have suddenly moved from describing the document as “fiction,” to a do-or-die obsession with knowing the source; they need to tell Nigerians most of who now live in mortal fear of their personal safety and security, if clamping down on the press has now become a priority sport. On our part, we wish to restate our resolve to continue to hold the government to account as enshrined in Chapter 22 of the constitution and to remain resolute in championing the course of press freedom and the right of the people to know. We stand by our story and will neither be cowed nor intimidated by the strong-arm tactics of President Jonathan nor by the puerile attempts by his spokesmen – Doyin Okupe and Dr. Reuben Abati – to tarnish our report. |

take dat: ^And you think those in Leadership Newspaper will have the effrontery to publish a fake document claiming its from the presidency when they know the likely consequence? Why hasn't the SSS swoop in on them? There are lots of moles and cretins in the Villa!Am a reporter with Leadership paper here in Abuja and I can tell u dat d PD 95 came from d presidency. How it was obtained obviously can't b disclosed unless a court directive. GEJ won't toe that line cos he knows d document iS real. They re many oda cases of dis nature where d presidency yields d big stick where Leadership reports such matters and has been harrassed severally with SSS. Am expecting dem again soon. |

The government to me seems very confused. Since we have a clueless leader, we should expect this kind of things. |
The Federal Government in Abuja on Monday granted Dana Airline permission to resume flight operations immediately. This is contained in a statement issued by Mr Joe Obi, the Media Adviser to the Minister of Aviation. Officials of the Federal Ministry of Aviation and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority met with the Management team from Dana Airlines today in Abuja and deliberated on some safety issues in connection with the operations of the airline. "At the end of the meeting, the suspension of the operations of the airline which took effect last Saturday was lifted. The airline is to resume normal operations immediately,’’ the statement stated. According to the statement, one of Dana’s aircraft has a snag which led to the temporary suspension for safety reasons. "The particular aircraft which had a snag over the weekend is to remain grounded until after its air- worthiness has been re-certified by Boeing, the manufacturer of the aircraft. It will be recall that one of Dana’s aircraft crashed in June 2012 and its operational license was revoked by the government. The airline was still battling with the resumption of full operation across Nigeria when it asked to stop operation again over safety issues. |

The Corps Marshall and chief executive, Federal Road Safety Corps, Osita Chidoka has reviewed the activities of the commission in the last 25 years. This was part of activities lined up to commemorate the silver jubilee of the commission. While delivering his speech, he highlighted the traffic situation in the country prior the establishment of the commission in 1988 which he described as “chaotic and unpredictable.” “With the FRSC coming on board, seat belt usage and public awareness had risen to 70% with improved crash helmet usage and installation of road signages on the highways,” Chidoka said. He also talked about the other achievements of the commission which included the introduction of the National Uniform Licensing Scheme which brought about the centralised data on drivers and vehicles across the country. He didn’t fail to mention the international recognition the commission had received in recent times. With honour, he talked whereby countries like Ghana, Sierra Leone and Mali had adopted the modus operandi of the commission to ensure safety on their roads. However, the corps Marshall said in preparing for the challenges that await the commission in the next 25 years, the commission had invested heavily on technology with 345 V-SAT being installed to ensure interconnectivity. In his words “as we march into the future, electronic ticketing, online verification of drivers; licence number plates and drivers record will become routine task available to end users. While answering questions from journalists, the Corps Marshall said those who were injured and others who died as a result of road crashes will be remembered and prayed for. Elaborating more on the issue of continuity of his lofty achievements after he must have handed over the baton of leadership, Chidoka pointed out the structures on ground would ensure that things won’t go down the slope. He further said the commission was in collaboration with security agencies on the use of surveillance cameras to track down traffic offenders. |
I know most of us don't like GEJ. I base this on d barage of insults he recieves online. I personally support d war in Mali. I believe d president is ontarck to end d boko haram. It might have taken him so long bt he is winning d war against terror. By cutting the base in Mali, d source has been weakened and thus the boko haram here are in jeopardy. Let's give it to Mr President pls. At least 4 once |
The fear of Jack Bauer is the beginning of wisdom. 24 is still my fav movie so far. Keep rewatching the series. |
This is surely a good one from Aregbe. I think kudos should be given to this guy for all his efforts. It is not easy being a leader bt I tink he has done certain things worthy of commendation. He has his flaws though bt nice Gov |
To all of you saying an ex-convict becoming d president are not nice at all. she made a mistake and had been forgiven by God. she is on course making things right for herself. lets stop bashing her unnecssary. being an ex convict cant stop her from living her life. cant she amke her life meanigful? see mandela, see obasanjo and so many other people. those castigating her should check themselves also. her case with the medical doctor was a mistake which can happen to anyone. she smoked and drank heavily which she said she has stopped. lets be real people. she deserves our prayers. |

the government of Nigeria is so corrupt that even the sanest public official is a rogue. it is very hard to say dere is no 'thieving' public servant in Nigeria. to be very frank with ourselves, corruption is an institution wit so much students and is willing to admit more students. just the head of the institution called corruption isnt official cos dey are all jostling for the lucrative post |

The Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, has sued the Independent Communications Network Limited, publishers of PM News for the sum of N1 billion. This was disclosed in a release issued by Festus Adedayo, the governor’s Special Adviser on Media. The evening newspaper had this afternoon published a piece entitled ‘Anxiety over Florence Ajimobi’s alleged arrest in UK’ , wherein it published a story purportedly written by an online agency named Newsleak, which alleged that the wife of the governor had been arrested in London for money laundering. According to the release, the government of Oyo State had the responsibility to ensure that the media does not become an instrument in the hands of blackmailers for such acts. “We want to state unequivocally that this report is not only wicked, it is the figment of the imagination of the writers. Mrs. Ajimobi was never arrested for any offence whatsoever. Even though our investigations have shown that this is the work of some arrowheads of the opposition, it was done in such an amateurish way that beats the imagination of any responsible reader,” the release said. The government said that though it had a lot of respect for the media, there was the need to drag the runners of these media to court to explain the details of their reports to the rest of the world. The government decried what it called dirty politicking by the opposition in the state who use the media for the propagation of their falsehood, stating that the courts would be able to compel those behind this wicked lie to provide details of the veracity or otherwise of their claims on the governor’s wife. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/10/money-laundering-gov-ajimobi-sues-media-outfit-for-n1bn/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

Cars have played a huge part in hip-hop culture since the music genre evolved. From Notorious B.I.G.’s “Hypnotize” to the army of low-riders in “Still Dre”, the Maybach Exelero Concept in “Lost Ones” — the world of hip-hop takes its car game very seriously. The Jay-Z: Mercedes-Benz Maybach Zeppelin Like Jay-Z, the Maybach Zeppelin is “official.” It is the real executive choice, a true OG. It may be understated, but this car’s power, sophistication and style are undeniable. The Zeppelin might look more grown-up than the rest of the younger sports cars, but with a twin-turbocharged 6.0 litre V12 engine that now delivers a massive 640 brake horsepower, don’t underestimate the Zeppelin. It’ll hit 60 mph from standstill in 5.0 seconds, climb all the way to 171 mph, and still look like a king on the road. The best of both worlds. What do you expect for a price tag around the $600,000 mark? The Lil Wayne: Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Like Lil Wayne, the SLR redefined the game. It is a true super car in a league of its own. Before the SLR, there was nothing like it. The super-charged 5.5 litre V8 engine generates a monstrous 650 brake horsepower. It goes 0-62 mph in a lightning quick 3.6 seconds and has an unbelievable top speed of 209 mph. A freak of nature, well, machinery. The Puffy (P. Diddy): Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe Like Diddy, the Phantom Drophead is a serious attention grabber. You can’t ignore this one. It is a bold and in-your-face statement of wealth, swagger and success. Arguably one of the best looking cars at the show, the Phantom commands respect. Though it is not as grown-up as the Maybach Zeppelin, the Phantom is a true player’s car. Now that the convertible Drophead has arrived and summer is coming, this is the car to be seen in. 50 Cent: Lamborghini Murcielago Like 50 Cent, the Lamborghini Murcielago handles business with an ice-cold stare. If it is parked on the street, everyone would love to stop and take a look. You can’t ignore it. It does not blend in. It makes a bold statement. It takes no prisoners, looks like a beast and sounds like one too. With a 6.5 litre V12 engine developing 640 brake horsepower and going 0-60 in 3.4 seconds, the Lambo Murcielago can reach a top-speed of 244 mph. Plus, 50 cent already got one! The Kanye West: Fisker Karma Like Kanye West, the Fisker Karma is way ahead of its time. It has got the mind of a geeky genius on the inside with the style of a true trend-setter on the outside. The Fisker looks like a cross between an Aston Martin and a Corvette. The interior is akin to that of a spaceship. No dials in sight. Everything is digital and even the on-board computer boasts iPhone-esque touch-screen capabilities, the first of its kind. But that is not all. It may look like a regular sports car, but move closer and the solar panels on the roof tell a different story. What Kanye did with backpacks, the Fisker does for electric cars.
