Christianity EtcRe: "Why Evangelicals Should Stop Evangelizing" by Joagbaje(m): 10:39am On Jul 28, 2011
Pastor AIO:
Thank, however you have not given me the criteria yet.  But while you're still bringing that one out let us make a study of what you've offered above.

14But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains:

15And let him that is on the housetop not go down into the house, neither enter therein, to take any thing out of his house:

16And let him that is in the field not turn back again for to take up his garment.

17But woe to them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!

18And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter.

19For in those days shall be affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be.

20And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect's sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.

21And then if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not:

22For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.

23But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things.

24But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light,

25And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken.

26And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.

27And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.

28Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near:

29So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors.

30Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done.

I believe that you are saying that the events that Jesus was talking about occurred around the destruction of the Temple in 70AD.  However there are a number of points I would like to draw to your attention.
In prophecies There is what is called "law of double reference" this law applies to some portions of this prophecy. But I know what I'm talking about . I don't want us to derail this thread.

First, it is both the Church and Jews in general that are concerned with the coming of the messiah/christ.  Not just specifically the Jews.

Second, Jesus makes reference to certain meteorological events that did not occur during the siege of Jerusalem.  Unless you want to interprete those events are being merely symbolic.  (the darkening moon, and falling stars etc).

Thirdly,  The Son of man will come in the clouds in great power and glory. I cannot imagine how you can consider such an event to be irrelevant to the Church.  Would you say that this event occurred in 70AD.
There wont be physical appearance of christ to the world at the rapture of the church. There are different kinds of raptures in the bible. There will be raptures during the tribulation time. There will be rapture of the two witnesses . There will be a jewish rapture of the 144000 People .(elect) these are from the 12 tribes of isreal. All these will take place after the rapture of the church. During the great tribulation. Prophecies are not always straight forward. There are rules involved in interpretation. I will prefer us deal with this in another thread. A part of a prophecy of end rimes  might have been fulfilled while the next verse is for futuristic fulfilment . Of course some part of that prophecy got fulfilled under Titus. Some end time prophecy had partial fulfilment under Antiochus ephiphanes too.

I must tell you that I don't agree with your conclusion that Jesus' warnings about false christs and false prophets do not apply to us today.  In fact all we've got to do is look around to see the proliferation of false claims.
It was clear that Jesus was dealing with the Jewish tribulation which is to come. It will last for seven years. They had rejected Jesus as christ. They are still looking for their messiah . They will finally embrace the Antichrist as their messiah. After three and half years . He will turn against them and God . He will claim to be their God.That is the signal that jesus mentioned .That is the abomination of dissolution that Daniel prophesied.

Please check this out for further study on the various understandings of the text from Daniel and Jesus' prophecy.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abomination_of_Desolation

There are 3 possible events, and each are problematic.

1)  Daniel was referring to when Antiochus would set up a statue of Zeus in the temple and sacrifice a pig to it.  This is an event that actually happened and is probably the worst sacrilege that the temple has ever suffered.

Problem:  It happened before Jesus' time so Jesus was either referring to a repeat of the same event, or something else.

2)  When Titus destroyed Jerusalem and the temple.

Problem:  Jesus ties the event with the coming of the Son of Man in Glory.  And he mentions meteorological events.  And he says that this generation will not pass until these events happen.  there are many interpretations of the word Genea/generation.  did he mean that it was to happen during those decades, or did generation mean race.

3) He was talking about the end of the entire world.

Problem:  Whether this would be a problem would depend on how you understand the term generation.  He spoke of armies surrounding Jerusalem.  If that happened tomorrow I don't think that anybody would be shocked.
When the Antichrist turns against the Jews, their eyes will be open to realise that the Antichrist is not their messiah.  They will start looking for another messiah. That's when the false christ or false messiahs will show up. Who will deceive them and cause more Jews to be killed until when Jesus finally shows up at the second coming. The second coming is mostly mistaken for the rapture . But it is not. The saints will come down with him at the second coming . We will fight for israel. He will come with us physically the whole world will see it.

Revelation 19:11-16
And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. 12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. 13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND Lord OF LordS.

What takes one to heaven?is it our religious beliefs{as in Christainity,Islam etc}? our faith in God and his words?our relationship with the people on earth?how constant we are in our places of worship?payment of religious dues{like tithes, zakat etc}?the promagation of our religious beliefs?our versatile we are in the bible and quoran}?the people we helped while on earth?our conscience? WHAT TAKES ONE TO HEAVEN?I REALLY AND SINCERELY WANT TO KNOW.
I think the question shouldn't be on how to get to heaven but rather it should be " HOW TO BE RIGHT WITH GOD" the issue is that our stay in heaven is only for 7 years . We will come back and dwell on the earth Which is our final abode.

But as other posters have said. Saving Faith in Jesus is the key to union with God.
Christianity EtcRe: Why Do Churches Insist On Traditional Marriage Before Wedding Couples? by Joagbaje(m): 9:20pm On Jul 27, 2011
Nabena06:
This matter is a bit confusing - considering that some traditional marriages are very pagan and some Christians have very pagan and fetish parents who would insist on every traditional rite-something that the christian life is totally against undecided
The christian does not have to follow ungodly practise in the tradition . THey shouldn't agree to anything that is contrary to their convictions.  The major thing is the dowry and feasting. It is honour for the parents who had raised her up and the lady as well . That in the presence of the villagers who acts as witnesses the girl is properly given out. So the story is "The man come to the fathers house to mary her. And tHe community witness it"

Well I recommend it because ,we are only hearing from one side . There may be other issues untold. So the pastor would have been in  the best position to hear the two sides and correct the erring side. The woman may have good reason . Maybe maybe not.  For example what is the ijaw name. I know  many ijaw names are not too good. Especially for Christians . Some bear Funny names such as rat , frog , coco yam, spoon etc when translated to English . A spiritually enlightened woman  may not find it fascinating to call her child who knows . It's just a thought .

Pastor AIO:
Can you give me some examples of things that Jesus taught that do not apply to the church?
What is the criteria for determining whether it can apply to the church or whether it can't.
well For example
Mark 13:6
For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

This scripture has been used many times to attack gospel ministers but it's not making reference to the church. But rather jews in the tribulation. And there  issues like that don't  relate to the church directly but are general though.

But  that's a derail from your defence.  You've still not enlightened me enough on how a man of other faith can adopt the teaching of christ.

While we are on the teachings of Jesus, could you please reaffirm your position that the teachingS of Jesus do not apply to 'christians' such as yourself. Just so we know that you are committed 'to stand for your belief'.
The teachings of Jesus apply to Christians. Also There are teachings under the law that applies to Christians as well , I have often said that the teachings based on principles in God applies to all ,beyond dispensations. But at the same time we should understand that it is not everything Jesus said that is applicable to the church. Because some issues he dealth with were for a people under the law. Besides the new testament hadn't come yet. We have to know who is being addressed on a particular issue.

Please, Mr. Joe Agbaje,  correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe we were discussing the teachings of Jesus.  I said that whosoever applies them to his life will experience results that transcend whichever cult or religion you belong to. You asked me what are the teachings of Jesus
Jesus taught many things on many topics . Which one are you referring to. What you guys are saying is that a man does not have to be born again or be a christian so long as he copies Jesus teaching or so. I want to know which particular teaching you're referring to. I would want to know your concept of salvation.

Your response seems like escape from committing yourself to stand for your belief.

March man:
Even before the birth of our child, I had already decided on the name we would give the boy. After his birth, I promptly named him, two Ijaw names and one Yoruba. The Mother is Yoruba. But my wife refused to call the baby his name after two weeks of delivery. Her grouse is that our pastor has not come to officially name the child! We attend Christ Embassy. I told her naming ceremony is just routine and I have been so busy. My people, who gives a child names, the parents or the pastor?
So what does she call the baby ?
But Why not complain to your pastor? At least he can correct her . What advice do you want to recieve here?

Pls tell them. Many believe that salvation is by works. The works doesn't come first ,it comes after as a fruit. You don't put the cart before the horse. Salvation is not by works . It is a gift received hrough faith.

Ephesians 2:8-9
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

No o don't escape it. It is important for you to answer.your answer should help drive a point in. Well the point is if you pick the story of the good Samaritan for example . And teach people . Does that get a man saved. You are simply teaching salvation by works. Why it's important to know what teaching of Jesus you are talking about.

I don't know if i get you well. Emotions are neutra in themselves, but the use and expression of them is what determines right or wrong. Anger is not bad in itself. But how you and what use use it for determines morality.

Christianity EtcBe Concerned About The Gospel by Joagbaje(op): 8:24am On Jul 26, 2011
. . . For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe unto me if I preach not the gospel! (1 Corinthians 9:16)

Every child of God ought to bear the same testimony about the Gospel as Paul in the Scripture above. You ought to be compelled by God’s love and by the Cross to preach the Gospel, for necessity is laid upon you to do so. When I think about what God did for me at the Cross of Calvary, I cannot but preach the Gospel. There’s a depth in God that no man will ever know until he starts winning souls for Jesus.

Wealth, fame, reputation and all the world’s symbols of success are meaningless compared to the depth of satisfaction, true joy, and fulfillment you’ll derive from making your life count for the Gospel. Besides giving financially for the spread of the Gospel around the world, you ought to personally seek avenues to preach the Gospel to those in your sphere of contact.

Be motivated to go all out and do all it takes for the Gospel to spread around the world and prevail in the hearts of men. Intercede for the spread of the Gospel in the earth. Necessity is laid upon every one of us – believers – to do this. It’s our Gospel ministry:

“To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation” (2 Corinthians 5:19).

Be concerned about the Gospel; and let your motivation for the Gospel effuse from your genuine love for others and your understanding that it’s God’s only saving power (Romans 1:16). If someone lives his whole life only to be famous, wealthy and recognized by men, without the Gospel of Jesus Christ being uppermost in his heart; such a fellow has lived an empty life.

Realize that your primary work on earth is to fulfil God’s Word in Matthew 28:19-20:

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

This is the Great Commission; and it’s the Lord’s charge to every Christian. You’re to preach the glorious Gospel of Christ to all men in order to bring them out of sin, sickness and poverty. Nothing in the world should matter more to you than this noble endeavour.

Prayer
Dear Father, I thank you for the privilege and opportunity to preach the Gospel. This glorious news is as fire, shut up in my bones and I’ll tell it everywhere. Thank you for your great power that’s manifested to save, heal, deliver, uplift and prosper all who embrace the glorious salvation that’s in Christ Jesus. Glory to God!

nlMediator:
. No church should be supporting government officials when they utter all this nonsense, while innocent Nigerians continue to die in ill-equipped hospitals and crappy roads due to the incompetence and corruption of these officials. It's good to know that they do read these devotionals, but I'll believe that it is immensely benefiting them when I see it in their conduct. So far their conduct is largely immoral and disgraceful.
The target is the people mind set. God only give a people the government they deserve. If the people become Godly , the government will change. Because the government is a reflection of the people. It starts with the mind set of people.

So the idea is about the spirit of patriotism . Chinese built china, Koreans built Korea , and Nigeria can only be built by nigerians. The change agent for rewal of minds is the word of God. And a daily devotional is a good instrument to start with . We also distribute free bibles.

We should remember that Christians are points of contact for Gods blessing upon a land. People have been cursing governments all through decades. But that's a mistake . Curses will cripple economy. But through devotional we are made to bless by positive confessions daily. Imagine millions blessing a nation daily. Satan will be resisted.

Proverbs 11:11
11 By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted: but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.

Haven't we seen the changes Going on. Evil is being restrained , there is a wake up call for accountability and nation building. Many action governors are emerging.  I went to ph recently , I lost my way. Development everywhere. Bridges and roads, lagos , Benin, uyo and several places. even people who never painted their houses before began to pAint them. There is a growing consciousness for beautification. We pray for the nation on regular bases .

There is a wake up call.  The church also partner with the government is development by helping out in the prisons, school buses and library and helping out in security by donating, patrol vans , computers, communication equipment, Internet etc to mention few.

Reach out campaign has brought joy and pomp to the celebration of independence again on our street. There is hope for a powerful emerging Nigeria.  We spend time to pray for the nations economy regularly . Our language must change. A christian shouldnt criticise leaders . Our responsibility is intercession.

1 Timothy 2:1-4
1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; 4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

a muslim can remain a muslim as long as he follows the 'leadership principles" of jesus christ
so can a buddhist, taoist, heck even a atheist will go to heaven as long as he follows these principles.
so christ did not have to die all he had to so was hold a seminar, give a motivational speech and hey presto we are all heaven. undecided
Christianity is not obeying some sets of moral codes. It's a pulsating life, (Gods life) in a man. Every religion believes in moral codes . So If it's all about morality. Jesus death was in vain.

It's rather about The life and nature of God. It's not about copying christ "style" but receiving christ life within.

1 John 5:11-12
11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

If they copy the lifestyle , it hadn't changed anything, it's like a monkey wearing T-shirt, does that make him human?
Christianity EtcCheer Up There Is Hope For You . by Joagbaje(op): 7:15am On Jul 26, 2011
. . .Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost (Romans 15:13).

Hope is the positive expectation of a desired end. It’s a virtue that gives you strength and a purpose. Only Jesus Christ can give you extraordinary hope. When you have that kind of hope, you’ll be propelled to look forward to tomorrow with excitement, because hope is for the future. It’s to expect with confidence; to cherish a desire with anticipation of a positive outcome.

We find an example of this from the story of the woman who had an issue of blood for twelve years. She had spent all her earnings on medical bills, but instead of getting better, she only got worse. She heard about Jesus, and on a certain day, came up behind Him in the crowd and touched His clothes,

“For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole” (Matthew 9:21).

As soon as she touched the hem of Jesus’ garment her bleeding ceased, and she immediately knew she was healed. She didn’t need anybody to confirm her healing; she just accepted it and that was it.

Though the woman had become desperate, having found herself in a hopeless situation for twelve long years, hope came to her when she heard the Master was healing people. Her hope translated to faith when she told herself “I’m going to touch His clothes and be healed!” Never think the situation you might be facing is too hopeless, for no problem is insurmountable.

There’s hope for you in Christ! It makes no difference the medical condition you’ve been diagnosed with or the state of your finances; cheer up, there’s hope for you. The Bible says Christ in you, the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27). Look forward to tomorrow with excitement; keep your hope alive. Nurture it to the point it can’t be denied. You too can be healed; you can achieve that desire in your heart. It’s not over yet; see the ray of light in the horizon, for there’s a miracle for you right now in that situation for which you require a change. Hallelujah!

Confession
Thanks be unto God who has given me freely all joy and peace in believing, that I may abound in hope through the power of the Holy Ghost! My life is from glory to glory because Christ in me is my assurance for the upward and forward life!

Psalms 38:18
For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin.

Psalms 71:14
But I will hope continually, and will yet praise thee more and more.

. . . .For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace (Romans 6:14).

There’re too many today in the Church who are overburdened by the weight of sin-consciousness - the ‘feeling’ that they’ve sinned or have done something wrong. Satan uses this as a weapon to keep them in bondage and make them ineffective. They constantly have this guilt-feeling that makes them think they’re not qualified or good enough to be used of God.

What they need to realize is first, that the sin-problem has been dealt with by Jesus. The Bible says 2 Corinthians 5:21,

“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

So sin is no longer a factor. Plus that, God is not a man (Numbers 23:19), and doesn’t judge or see the way men do. He enlisted you into the ministry to do His work and enjoy His best not because of your own good works or self-righteousness, but because of His faithfulness and grace:

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:” (Ephesians 2:cool.

God has counted you faithful, putting you in the ministry (1 Timothy 1:12);

therefore nothing and no sin should hinder your faith or dampen your zeal from doing His work. Remember, you didn’t call yourself to do His work, He called you; and before He called you He knew you. He knew all the mistakes you could ever make, yet He justified you and commissioned you to go in His Name and preach the Gospel to every creature. So you have a responsibility to do God’s work; let nothing stop you.

2 Corinthians 3:5-6 says,

Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.” God did this in spite of you: He qualified you and made you an able minister of the New Testament. He’s already done it, and it’s irrevocable (Romans 11:29). Therefore refuse to allow sin or a guilt-conscious distract you from ministering to the Lord or from fulfilling your purpose as a minister of reconciliation. Get busy for the Lord and stay on task as a soul-winner!

Prayer
Blessed Father, I love you, and nothing can take my heart away from serving you and fulfilling your purpose for my life! I’ll always bring you glory through service in your vineyard, and in the preaching of the Gospel, for that’s what my life is for, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
