ROHR’S FEAR OF BACKLASH HOLDS BACK EJIDE’S SUPER EAGLES’ RECALL

https://www.sportsvillagesquare.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Austin-Ejide-293x165.jpg
BY BOLAJI OKUNOLA.

Super Eagles’ manager, Gernot Rohr is still having headaches over the last line of his World Cup-bound squad. The goalkeeping department is still a source of worry for him. In the five World Cup qualifying matches he guided Nigeria to, the Franco-German coach made use of three goalkeepers.

Ikechukwu Ezenwa featured lately and most prominently in three of such matches while the duo of Carl Ikeme and South Africa based Daniel Akpeyi had a match each and conceded a goal in each of the encounters.

Ezenwa in three consecutive matches conceded just a penalty kick goal, away from home in the encounter with Cameroon in Douala.

While Ezenwa is just warming himself into Rohr’s heart, the coach admits he needs strong back up for the World Cup and also for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series which resume in March.

His desire to bring back a seemingly unwilling self-retired Vincent Enyeama appears doomed as feelers indicate that the Nigeria Football Federation is not inclined to the goalkeeper’s recall.

Yet, it is almost generally agreed that the Super Eagles do not have a goalkeeper that can grace the esteem stage of the World Cup. The team must have three goalkeepers in its final 23-man squad.

A source in the Super Eagles technical crew informed Sports Village Square that Rohr was thinking of recalling World Cup’s negative record holder, Austin Ejide. But the possible backlash from pundits has held him back.

Austin Ejide has been to three World Cup finals in 2002, 2010 and 2014 without seeing a minute of action.

After almost two years of layoff, he is currently back with an Israeli club, Hapoel Hadera. He last kept the goal for Nigeria in a goalless outing with South Africa in a 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in September 2014.

The inside source told Sports Village Square that Rohr was aware of Ejide’s experience but he was also worried by the goalkeeper’s lack of action which will possibly draw a lot of criticism that may also affect Ejide’s composure.

Independent sources told Sports Village Square that Ejide’s weight and increased size are additional worries. Last January, while featuring in a Joseph Dosu organized novelty match at the Julius Berger ground in Lagos, Ejide told Sports Village Square that his not getting a national call-up was due to his not featuring for any club side since he left Hapoel Be’er Sheva of Israel in 2015.

As at January, he still nursed a possible return to the Super Eagles’ fold if he was able to secure a contract with a club which he has since done.

His contract for the Hapoel Hadera is for three years. Before, Vincent Enyeama, Ejide was the first choice goalkeeper when the 2002 squad was disbanded after the turmoil that afflicted the Super Eagles at the Mali 2002 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ejide debuted for the Super Eagles on June 16, 2001 when he came off the bench as a substitute for Sunday Rotimi in an away 0-2 win for Nigeria against Namibia in an Africa Cup of Nations Cup qualifier.

He was looking like a possible permanent holder of the number one shirt having featured in the pre World Cup friendly matches under Coach Adegboye Onigbinde.

However, Vincent Enyeama stamped his authority as a goalkeeper the moment he debuted on May 4, 2002 in a 3-0 defeat of Kenya in a friendly match in Lagos.

But in 2008, Ejide was preferred by Germany’s Coach Berti Vogts ahead of Vincent Enyeama at the Africa Cup of Nations.

But is he ready to bounce back again? In the encounter with him months ago, he told Sports Village Square: “I still wish to keep for the Super Eagles. All goalkeepers must be in top form before getting a national team call up. I am not under a contract with any club for now.

“No one knows what tomorrow or the nearest future will be. As soon as a get signed with any club then I will certainly be battle ready for the Super Eagles gloves. Nigeria is my country and I derive pleasure in staying between the sticks whenever I am called upon.”

Has the time come? The Super Eagles source said while Rohr seemed inclined towards, Ejide, the foul aroma over his inactivity may make the NFF to kick against his invitation.

Thank you. But Habib is still yet to clock a minute for Leicester U23. He never played for Chelsea.. I will be making modifications as they start to make some progress. The other two you mentioned were not in the class that passed the MRI for the World Cup. Same reason why I excluded Onyinye Ndidi.

I think I can excuse Habib. At least it seems his career is on track

For me, 2009 set onward is legit. I'm not saying Ajiboye's age na lie oh.
If little Messi is clocking minutes, why not? He can always return to Europe. I want to believe your career is still on track if you are playing in the NPFL.

Besides, he suppose don pass that level. The context here is young players.

At least Shehu can complement Pinnick. He is the LMC chairman, so let's expect progress in the NPFL.
daveP:
I wish him goodluck! Come to think of it, Shehus and football are like 5&6... since 2000. If he wants to further, he should target FIFA jobs, and not Glass House topseat. I'm tired of the brouhaha that follows after every world cup year.

Rohr To Join Eagles In Morocco, Squad List Out Next Week- Report
Published: October 28, 2017

Rohr To Join Eagles In Morocco, Squad List Out Next Week- ReportSuper Eagles manager Gernot Rohr will link up with the national team players and his backroom staff in Morocco on November 5, ahead of next month's World Cup qualifier against Algeria and international friendly against Argentina.

The Nigeria Football Federation chose to camp in the North African country as it's easier to connect a flight to Algeria and get accustomed to the climate.

''Coach Rohr is going straight to Morocco to meet the players for their preparation against Algeria,'' Super Eagles media officer Toyin Ibitoye told completesportsnigeria.com.

''The camp will open same day and we are all looking forward to the game.''

As earlier reported by this website, the Nigerian Federation are expected to announce a list of players summoned for the upcoming games after this weekend's matches in Europe.

Gernot Rohr is cooling off in Bordeaux before his trip to Africa .

Nigeria tackle Algeria on November 10 before a high-profile friendly with Argentina four days later in Southern Russia.

yes and don't underrate people's ideas because they are just Nairaland warriors. There are diamonds in the rough everywhere.

TheGoodJoe:
At 16 years of age, Villas-Boas had not finished his studies when he noticed that Robson, then manager of Porto, was living in the same apartment block as him.

Robson would go on to win the first of three successive titles that year, but for fan Villas-Boas, he was making a mistake in keeping striker Domingos Paciencia on the bench.

The youngster wrote to Robson raising his concerns and the UEFA Cup-winning coach responded by asking him to supply data to support his argument.

He soon did. Villas-Boas sent back a raft of statistics and arguments pinpointing why he was correct.

Robson was so impressed he offered the Portuguese a trainee position with the youth team’s coaching staff, and the rest is history.

Robson was a brilliant and well respected football coach but still miss some points. It does not mean because of coaches top positions, they can not miss details.

Wilfred Ndidi is EPL Midfield General

https://www.footballlive.ng/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Untitled-130.png

He may be only one season old in the Premier League but Wilfred Ndidi is already leaving his mark on the most prestigious football league in the world.
Ndidi, 20, joined Leicester City from KRC Genk for £15 million in January on a 5-year deal and has made the midfield his comfort zone.

After 9 Premier league matches, the Nigeria International leads the stats board for most tackles made.
Ndidi has made 39 tackles, 7 more than Huddersfield’s Aaron Mooy, who comes second on the list.

as per Squawka, Ndidi also tops the list of tackles won after 8 matches played – in comparison to Aaron Mooy and Everton’s Idrissa Gueye – but with more minutes played.

Shenhua Shanghai of China striker, Obafemi Akinwunmi Martins has been put under strict medical examination by his club, following what looked like a knee injury he copped on Sunday.

https://www.footballlive.ng/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Untitled-102.png

Reports after the game suggest that ‘Obagol’ might have got a aggravated a previous injury that recently required extensive surgery in United States of America.

However, Shenhua’s coach, Wu Jingui said he cannot make any categorical statement on the situation until Martins sees the club’s medics for a thorough examination of the injury.

The coach also confirmed that Martins will have a scan, after the former Inter Milan of Italy, Newcastle United of England, VfL Wolfsburg of Germany, Birmingham City of England, Rubin Kazan of Russia, Sevilla of Spain and Seattle Sounders of America striker appeared in pain.

Martins was seen clutching his knee towards the end of the match, thereby raising fears that he might have sustained a thigh muscle injury.

Speaking after the match, Jingui allayed fears over the player’s condition, but stated that the Nigerian striker will undergo fresh scan to know if the injury is a serious one.

“We had a good game and both teams were able to play because they are not under any relegation pressure.

“As for Martins situation, we will go back to examine the extent of his injury,” the coach pointed out, while noting how the striker’s assist helped Shenhua seal a draw.

Pinnick congratulates Dikko on FIFA appointment -

President of Nigeria Football Federation,Mr. Amaju Melvin Pinnick on Friday congratulated NFF 2nd Vice President/LMC Chairman Shehu Dikko, after the soft –spoken administrator and marketing and strategic development expert was

appointed a Member of the FIFA Football Stakeholders Committee. FIFA ratified the appointment of Dikko at its Council meeting held Friday, 27th October 2017 in Calcutta, India.

Dikko’s appointment made him the third Nigerian to be appointed into a FIFA Committee this year, after Pinnick himself was enlisted into the influential Organizing Committee for FIFA Competitions and former Lagos State Chief Judge, Justice Ayotunde Philips was elected Member of the FIFA Ethics Committee (Adjudicatory Council).

“It has been a glorious year for Nigerian Football. We have qualified for the FIFA World Cup with remarkable ease, much more comfortably than anyone could have imagined after the group phase draw. We qualified for the CHAN. Now, we have people in very important positions in world football, signifying global reckoning, and it is a thing of absolute joy.

“Shehu (Dikko) fully deserves his appointment. He has been doing

excellent job as Chairman of LMC and as 2nd Vice President and Chairman of the NFF Marketing, Sponsorship and Television Advisory Committee, as well as the NFF Strategy Committee. I believe he will fly our country’s flag very high in that committee and his experience, deep knowledge and work ethic would be huge value added to FIFA’s objectives in developing football across board

,” Pinnick told thenff.com.

Its modus operandi states that the FIFA Football Stakeholders Committee “shall advise and assist FIFA on all matters relating to Football (including women’s football, futsal and beach soccer), particularly the structure of the game, as well as on all technical matters. The committee shall also deal with

relationship

between clubs, players, leagues, member associations, Confederations and FIFA, as well as issues relating to the interest of Club Football worldwide, and analyse the basic aspects of football training and technical development.”

It can be recalled that seven (7) Nigerians have been appointed

into various committees of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), also this year.

EX-GOLDEN EAGLET PROGRESS UPDATE 2

Golden Eaglet Class of 2015 goalkeeper, Akpan Udoh is rumored to have already been snapped up by Bnei Sakhnin. According to scorenigeria, the modest Israeli top tier side have hired a dedicated goalkeeper trainer to work with Udoh for the next year with the plan of farming him out to a big club in England or Spain. ScoreNigeria insinuated that the scout who discovered the 18 year old stopper from Remo Stars, Manna Abba Nasir ‘Sergio’, believes the lad has the potential to be the best goalkeeper in the world for his age category.

Golden Eaglet Class of 2015 midfielder, Kingsley Michael was handed another start for Bologna Primevera (U19) after he made his debut n the previous week. Starting again as a CM he lasted 67 minutes in their 1-1 away draw with Lazio U19.

Golden Eaglet Class of 2015 forward, Funsho Bamgboye, have not enjoyed a good run of games since the start of the the Hungarian 17/18 season. Funsho's professional career seemed to have started brightly in the 16/17 season after he made 3 appearances from the bench, and again made the bench in the final game of the season. But so far, in the current season, Funsho has only appeared in Szombathelyi Haladás' matchday squad once. And has been absent since August. Szombathelyi Haladás competes in the Hungarian top tier (Nemzeti Bajnokság I).

Golden Eaglet Class of 2013 captain, and one-cap Super Eagles Right-Back, Musa Muhammed has been ever present in the Bulgarian top-tier since appearing in Lokomotiv Plovdiv's matchday squad. However, the Plovdiv left-back could not inspire his team to a second consecutive win, as they fell 3-0 away to Chermo More. Muhammed has played every single minute since his second loan spell from parent club Baseksehir Istanbul.

Golden Eaglet Class of 2015 midfielder, Joel Aiyetoya Osikel, starred for Slovenian NK Domzale U19 in both their home and away games involving Serbian FK Cukaricki U19 in the UEFA Youth League. Osikel played for 90 mins as a DM in the home game which ended in a 1-1 draw, but fell away 4-1 while he clocked 80 minutes. Domzale therefore crashed out after the 1st round, losing to the Serbian side 5-2 on aggregate.

Golden Eaglet Class of 2015 forward, Sunday Alimi, has been snapped up by Turkish giants, Galatasaray. Turkish online football website, gamaspor.com reported just two days ago that the former Lobi Stars player has signed an official contract with the club after turning 18 earlier in the month. He is expected to start training with the U19 side of the Turkish outfit.

Martins was never an influential player in SE, so why the fake fears? if we are having this convo as regards Enyeama, then that will makes sense. However Rohr has given Enyeama conditions.. Don't try to find every reason now because it's Martins. You have already admitted you are sentimental about this, then why the further talk. Neither you nor I can control who gets invited. Let's move on from the topic.

Mujtahida:
You never can tell if it would destabilise or not. Westerhof was the leader when players were having scuffles in camp as Kog45 has often related. It's not military but the military metaphor is apt.

And just because an older and more experienced player comes in you think that will destabilize leadership? This is not military oh. Rohr has the authority, and every player will have to respect his captain.

Mujtahida:
Of all the words I mentioned only force and control have negative connotations. However all of them are utilised in leadership. It depends on how wisely a leader deploys them in turns for the greater good. Good leaders know how and when to apply force, when and how to direct, inspire, cajole, encourage, criticize, praise, advise. Any leader who absolutely avoids force just because he doesn't want to be seen in a bad light will eventually lose respect.
