The heart of man is desperately wicked." This Biblical expression came to the fore once again recently as a 16-year-old boy (name withheld) defiled a nine-year-old school girl, who was on her way home from school in company with her friends at Adekile area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

That fateful Friday, Victoria, and two other friends, Mariam and Rukayat, dropped their school bags on their playing field as they played a 'hide and seek' game.

The children were enjoying their game until the suspect came like a wolf to attack them. But his approach did not suggest that he contemplated any evil. He took the girls' bags and left for the mission house, where he lives with his mother and elder brother.

Since he was home alone, he was able to hatch his plan without any hindrance. The girls ran down to the suspect's house, asking for their bags. The youngster insisted that one of them must come into the room to collect the bags.

But the girls would not play along easily. They insisted that he should bring out their bags so that they could go home. As the plea degenerated into confusion, the boy released two bags. But he still held Victoria's bag.

The hapless young girl begged and prayed, but his assailant would not let go. She pleaded that her parents would be mad at her if she got home late, but all the pleas fell on the suspect's deaf ears. At last, she obliged and went into the room with him.

It was already too late before help came her way. The desperate boy had his way as the girl struggled and writhed in pain. She was drenched with blood. Victoria was deflowered at a tender age of nine by the young rapist. As she walked out of the mission house sobbing, a woman walked up to her. She recounted her story to the woman with tears rolling down her cheeks. The woman eventually took her home and broke the sad news to her parents.

Nothing could console the poor girl and her family. They reported the case at the Agugu Police Station and the suspect was arrested. He was later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, Ibadan, for further interrogation.

The doctor's report indicated that the victim suffered some lacerations on her private part and her hymen was broken. The report reads, "Patient brought in by her parents. Hymen just broken - newly bleeding. There are areas of abrasions. She appeared dusty and anxious. Sticky substance found around her private part."

The boy confessed that he lured the girl into the room in order to rape her. He, however, said he could not penetrate the minor and therefore, ejaculated on her waist. He said, "It was the work of the devil; the devil used me."

AS he lay on the hospital bed, it was obvious the man was in serious pain. His head, grotesquely swollen, was heavily bandages as were his legs.

Some members of his family and his fellow workers at Tentacle surrounded his bed, waiting for the doctor, who was being expected as at the time The Guardian visited the Lagos hospital.

A source disclosed that the patient, Innocent Chukwu, the editor of Tentacle, a Lagos-based bi-weekly news magazine, had been on infusions since he was brought to the hospital, the night before.

From his swollen head and broken legs, it was obvious that Chukwu must have sustained severe injuries.

However, no one could ascertain the severity of his injuries and the extent of damage, as the doctor's report was still being expected.

But, though he could hardly speak, his spirit seemed very strong and yet un-cowed.

With the support of a colleague, though his right hand was still attached to an infusion bag, Chukwu managed to raise his head, peering through swollen eyes, to see his sympathizers.

"We are still waiting for the doctor to come. For now, I can't tell the extent of the damages, but they have conducted their tests. By the time he comes this morning, I will know my fate," Chukwu said in a very weak tone.

Reading from a statement signed by the Executive Editor of the magazine, Charles Uzoma, Chukwu alleged that he was, on Wednesday, October 20, attacked and brutalized by men suspected to be from the Customs and Excise and some hoodlums suspected to be smugglers at Seme Border.

It is believed that the attackers were acting on the orders of an Area Comptroller of Customs at the Officer at the Seme Border Command, Alhaji Maitama Kura.

According to Chukwu, the attack was not unconnected with the cover story published in the October 31 edition of Tentacles, entitled: Illegal Arms Importation Rises At Ports, Border Posts: Customs Admits Porous Borders.

"Maitama claimed that the story indicted him. He said the report would bring government attention more on the border post, wondering why other borders were not mentioned like Seme border in the report," Chukwu said.

His ordeal started on Tuesday, October 19, 2010, when the Public Relations Officer of Seme Customs, Mr. Olottah, on the orders of the Area Comptroller Seme, invited Chukwu to their office for "an urgent discussion."

"He called me on the phone to inform me that Maitama wanted to see me urgently the following day by noon for an interview to highlight the Command's side of the story.

" I had booked an earlier appointment with a Senator in Abuja, so, I told Olottah that I was already engaged on that date."

But according to Chukwu, Olottah pleaded with him to cancel the Abuja appointment since the matter at hand was very crucial.

So, in order to give the Customs a chance to respond, he cancelled his appointment with the Senator.

"On getting to the CAC's office at noon that day, I was requested to produce the tape with which I recorded the previous interview I had with Maitama, or be arrested by the State Security Service (SSS).

"I told them I would not surrender the tape under duress, but would produce it at an appropriate time and place."

The tape being demanded was recorded during the interview Chukwu had with Maitama, from which he published the story. Maitama and his men had felt indicted and wanted the tape.

But despite the threats, Chukwu stood by his story, which made the CAC and his officers very angry.

According to Chukwu, an understanding was reached that the CAC would grant him another interview to correct any wrong impressions created.

"I was in company of other journalists whom the CAC directed to another office, but requested that I stayed behind for the interview. That was when Jappa, another customs officer, walked in and said to the CAC, 'Oga, let me take this one to the boys the other side.'

Both the CAC and Jappa muttered a few words in Hausa before he, Maitama said to me, 'Inno, you can follow him to the other office."

According to Chukwu, he followed Jappa downstairs, where he thought the other journalists were. But instead of meeting the journalists, he dragged Chukwu to a group of angry-looking men and said, 'This is the idiot.'

"The plain-clothe men numbering over 50, whisked me away, blindfolded me and took me to a hidden place.

They stripped me, tied legs and hands and hung me on a wall. They used lit cigarettes to burn my private part. They also used broomsticks to pierce my penis. At last, they put back my torn clothes and headed for the river," Chukwu narrated.

His saving grace came when a neatly dressed middle-aged man appeared to warn the suspected smugglers that, 'the Area Controller said he was taken from his office, so, don't kill him.'

"The men, who claimed that I was trying to take away food on their table through my report, led me straight to the CAC's office, yet, he did not question them concerning the act."

According to Chukwu, "The CAC told me, to my face, that he planned the attack and pleaded that I waited a while in his office while he would order his escort team to take me to a hospital in Apapa. He pleaded with me to agree to a settlement, which I rejected. I insisted that the public must hear this."

Upon Chukwu's insistence, the CAC and his senior officers invited the Divisional Police Officer, Seme Border, who offered to escort the brutalized journalist to Lagos.

When asked why he chose to disclose the identity of his source when the information was given in confidence, Chukwu, who was very weak managed to say: "This is an issue of security of lives; I love this country and I don't want anything to happen, especially as we are preparing for the elections. I acted in public interest."

According to Chukwu, the case has been registered with the police for further investigations.

"They've been here several times. In fact, we are expecting them to come any moment from now. The picture he's taking is for the police because they demanded for it, " he said, pointing to a young photographer, who was capturing the battered journalist from different angles.

Asked if he's ready to prove his case if the matter is taken to a law court, Chukwu said, "Our lawyer has already petitioned them. We are ready to take this case to any length. I have all the evidence to prove my case, but that is not what we are talking of, for now," he submitted.

In a petition to the Area Commander, Area E, FESTAC, Lagos, dated October 20, his lawyers, Stella Ukaegbu & Associates, narrated their client's ordeal, insisting that the perpetrators must be made to face the law.

None of the efforts made to reach Kura Maitama was successful.

13 containers of rocket launchers seized

LAGOS—COMBINED security operatives, yesterday, intercepted 13 containers laden with arms and ammunition including rocket launchers, catridges and hand grenades at the A P Moller Terminals in Apapa port.

Although, no arrest had been made at the time of going to press, the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Marvel Akpoyibo, said the command has launched a manhunt for the owners as the Police Anti-bomb squad was busy opening the crates containing the arms.

The Apapa Area Customs Controller, CAC, Alhaji Abdulkadir Azerema said contents of the containers were not declared before they were intercepted.

The first container that was opened by the various security agencies that carried out examinations discovered the 24 crates of rocket launchers and other weapon of mass destruction.

Vanguard gathered that SSS, acting on a tip off intercepted the containers and cordoned off the entire examination bay of A.P. Moller where the containers were to be examined.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police ordered a re-enforcement of a full unit of Police Mobile Force to beef up the security of the area until the containers are examined.

The containers with numbers 7869612, 7827707,7868370, 7869356,7870064, 7866819,7868318, 7868771, 7866676, 9478240,7868431, 1301980 and 7869464, were suspected to have been shipped from Iran.

Besides, officers of the Nigerian Customs Service, NCS, State Security Services, SSS, Cotecna Inspection Services, the Security department of the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, and officers of the Nigeria Police Force were also present at the venue of examination.

Security agents made futile bids to stop the publication of the seizure yesterday.
Another senior security officer threatened to take it up with any media house that reported the matter.

The security officer said: “No media report yet until we have gotten ‘A, B, C, D. This is what is done abroad. This bothers on national security. I am not begging over this, it concerns you and I.

Customs CG expresses shock

Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service ,Alhaji Abdullahi Dikko, expressed shock at the cache of arms intercepted adding that he was happy that the arms were discovered.

He commended the commitment of the officers which led to the interception following the joint operation by various security agencies. and officers of the Nigeria Customs Service, in collaboration with the Beninoise gendarmes have commenced joint border patrol with a view to tracking down containers suspected to carrying prohibitive equipment including arms and ammunition.

The command’s public relations officer, Mr. Ernest Olatha, a Deputy Superintendent of Customs, DSC, said although no such containers had been intercepted since the commencement of joint border patrols, the Customs were not relenting in their efforts at ensuring that the border was not used for small arms deal.

Olatha said: “We have commenced combing of all illegal routes, bushes and swampy areas to ensure that no incidence of arms proliferation takes place through this border.

At the approved routes, we ensure that all trucks are inspected to the letter and as I talk to you now, no such incidence has occurred.”

There is palpable fear in Gusau, Zamfara State capital following a text message purportedly being circulated by members of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) that President Goodluck Jonathan should expect another bombing as he plans to commission electricity projects in the state.

The message was sent to a journalist with a national newspaper (not Daily Sun) and other prominent individuals in the state through the mobile number: +2348185474732 and reads unedited:

The text message came on the eve of the President’s visit to the state and there is panic among the people, especially, top government officials and security personnel.

It was gathered that as at press time special bomb squad had been deployed in areas within the state capital and the venue for the commissioning of the electrification project at Talata Mafara, which would connect Zamfara, Sokoto and Kebbi States to the national grid.
It was further gathered that armed and plain clothes security personnel had been deployed in major streets in the state capital to provide adequate surveillance and security.

When contacted the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Zamfara command, ASP Sanusi Amiru said the command was aware of the security situation in the country and had drafted special squad on bomb disposal to ensure adequate security at the venue.
He advised the public to remain calm and not panic as policemen were on red alert.

Any person who is conversant with goings on in Aba does not have to stretch his imagination far to have an idea of what life could be like in Thomas Hobbes’ State of Nature. In Aba, life is very nasty, very brutish and short and of little value.

The story of kidnapping, rape, robbery and killing comes out of Aba everyday. But that of Dr. Stanley Uche, some three weeks back was one case of kidnapping and murder too many, defying everything previously known about the operations of the outlaws that have since become the de facto lords of Aba, shameful reality that the police in Abia state have sadly come to terms with.

Uche, a renowned gynaecology and proprietor of Victory Christian Hospital at Obohia Road, Aba was abducted along with his wife in the presence of their children on September 16. His body was later dumped at Aru-Ngwa in the Osisioma Local Government Area of Abia state after his captors had given assurances that they would not put him in harm’s way provided their conditions were met.

Now the bereaved family thinks there is more to Uche’s kidnap and subsequent murder than meets the eyes, and his distressed wife, Miriam, is yet to understand what could have motivated the action of kidnappers.
Mrs. Uche who has since fled Aba, is still at a loss as to why the bandits killed her husband within 24 hours of taking them captive, despite that the ransom they demanded was promptly paid within hours. “It’s not as if I did not give them (the ransom). We agreed on an amount which I gave them. They said I should bring it and I did; that was it. I did not know what really came over them, I really don’t know,” she told Daily Sun last week.

Like the pastor of the slain doctor, Pastor Theo Maduafor, she is befuddled the more by the decision of the police at Osisioma not to inform the family that Uche’s corpse had been found until 24 hours later despite that the police were very familiar with the case which was duly reported to them.

The story of the late Dr. Stanley Uche is a pathetic one. Ironically, it was death that had necessitated the travel being made by the Uches when they were accosted by the kidnappers. A member of the family, in fact a cousin of the doctor, was due for burial that weekend in their village in Mbano, Imo state, and the deceased had set out for the burial with his wife, their two children and his younger sister.

The wife recalls that they were already on the expressway that runs from Enugu through Aba to Port Harcourt when she noticed a Mercedes 190 vehicle behind the Toyota Camry car in which her family was traveling. Whether it was by sheer instinct or premonition, she knew the movement of the vehicle was not a friendly one, and had promptly told her husband who was driving to be wary of the car. According to her, Uche had taken notice of her warning while the journey continued.

However, their determination to lose the vehicle on their trail came to a naught pretty too soon, thanks to the potholes that made nonsense of the portion on the road as they were approaching a place called Aru-Ngwa. It was then that they were overtaken and blocked by the Mercedes Benz car. About four-gun totting men were said to have jumped out immediately and bundled the man and his wife into the boot of their car and sped away as other people watched, leaving the shocked children and the other girl, a university undergraduate, in utter confusion.

The couple was carried to an unknown destination where they remained in the boot till the following day. According to Mrs. Uche, her husband was chained with a key right inside the boot, for reasons best known to their captors. There was little or no air coming inside the boot where they were dumped, except while the car was in motion.

The doctor himself was not in the best state of health. In fact he had been sick the previous day, but had to opt for the journey because of the issue involved. Meanwhile, at the spot where the kidnapping took place, a man who witnessed the drama had alerted the police which came to the scene and drove the stranded children and the sister of the deceased to their home.

Before then, Uche’s sister had phoned the doctor’s elder brother who had travelled ahead of them to the village for the burial and told him his brother and sister-in-law had been abducted. The case was reported to the police at Osisioma.

The police were said to have demanded for N5,000 so that they could radio the Abia Police Command at Umuahia and also open a file for the case. The family was said to have objected to the idea of opening a file since it could aggravate matters for the victims, but the police had insisted, and the N5,000 was paid.
Meanwhile, the kidnapped persons were still with their captors until early morning of the following day when the wife was released.

They had promptly demanded for N10 million as their price before Dr. Uche could be freed. According to Mrs. Uche, they said they were releasing her so that she could go and rally money to secure her husband’s freedom. Mrs. Uche, who says she escaped being molested by some divine intervention, explains that as early as 6.00am that Friday morning, they had brought her out of the boot and told her to go home with assurances that her husband would be let go as soon as she returned with the agreed ransom.

As soon as she returned, she went about sourcing for the money, and thanks to her boss, she was able to raise the amount agreed between them and the kidnapper and set out to drop the money in the place designated by the hoodlums. Before 12 noon that Friday, the task of dropping the money was done, and the family was looking forward for the return of the kidnapped doctor.

“We agreed on an amount and they said I should get the money, and I did. They said nobody should follow me; I obeyed the instruction because I did not want them to harm my husband,” she says. Having received the agreed sum, the kidnappers told Mrs. Uche to go home, promising that the man would return before the day ran out. The promise not only raised the hope in the family, but also frustration as Friday passed, and the man was no where to be seen. On Saturday, the painful waiting continued and by Sunday, hope was beginning to turn to despair.

It was that Sunday afternoon that some policemen from the Osisioma Police Station came to the family and said Uche’s corpse had been found in Aru-Ngwa the previous day and had been taken to the mortuary.
“The police could not alert the family or take the picture of the place where they found him. I don’t want to go into many questions, but it was on a Saturday that they found him.

It was the same station that rescued the children and the vehicle. They found the phone number and everything on him, but did not contact the family until Sunday afternoon,” Mrs. Uche says. It was not the first time the Uche family was having a brush with kidnappers. Last year his father was kidnapped in their country home at Mbano. He was later released. On January 1, this year, he lost his mother, and the father who was yet to fully come to terms with the death of the wife was recuperating in his son’s house in Aba when the incident occurred. He is yet to be informed that Uche is dead.

In Aba where he had a thriving medical practice, the 47 year old graduate of the University of Ibadan was known as the people’s doctor. It was not surprising that a pregnant woman who was attending antenatal in the hospital collapsed and died on the spot when she had of the death.

Pastor Maduafor believes that some envious people who were not comfortable with the popularity enjoyed by his hospital may have had a hidden under the guise of kidnappers to get him out of the way.
Describing the deceased as a very humble, quiet person, he says: “He was taking little money from people and God was helping him. They had been planning against him. They went through Bakassi sometime, that time it was a woman who claimed to have been delivered of her baby in the hospital and the baby was killed. They were ready to kill him until they found out it was all a lie. He was ready to help people, humble, very quiet.”

Insisting that kidnapping was only a smokescreen used to perpetrate the evil intention of those who felt threatened by Uche’s thriving practice, the pastor says: “I feel it was envious people who came in the guise of kidnapping him. His antenatal that used to be twice a week is now four times. He recently moved to a four storey building, and the whole place is filled. It was not money the people were looking for. How can they say they are looking for money, and just a question of one day, the man had been killed?”

Lamenting that Aba had suddenly become a jungle in firm grips of the vicious black-hearted men, he says another doctor also died the previous day, another victim of kidnappers. The doctor fell down from his house while trying to escape kidnappers who were closing in on him and later died.

“For now what is happening in Aba is painful. They are destroying everything and everybody in Aba. They rape people, kill people for whatever reason…The banks are closed, churches are closed, markets are closed, and schools are closed. People are hiding up and down,” the pastor lamented.

I CRIED LIKE MAD. I CALLED AND BEGGED HIM TO THINK ABOUT HIS DECISION BUT HE REMAINED UNSHAKEABLE AND GAVE A THOUSAND AND ONE REASONS WHY IT WONT WORK. I was in thesame shoes as ur girl friend when I started my own job. Mine was even very difficult because the person that left before me was actually dating him (my boss) and I became angry at her when I discovered that she was cos she use to be my friend. I was really maltreated to the extend that I do hide my tears in the office, when the shouting and insults comes. so it was not really easy for me, cos my boss is a f, t. So bro, its not new any longer, any boss of the opposite sex that finds fault on every issue, shouts at every little mistake, shows inhumanity on some issues, is actually looking for something. So therefore, the strategy I used to conquer him was that:
1.  I dress modestly to the office (i.e not very short skirts cos he likes short skirts and I also use light make-ups)
2.  Behave as if I dont know anything by not contributing to any single discussion in the office when he is around
3.  I became very efficient and effective in my work (am a secretary, so I do my typing and other jobs quickly than he expected)
4.  I attach curtsy to any of his instruction am to carry out
5.  And above all, I do pray for him not to ever see me and want me and dat I should be ugly in his eyes

so tell ur babe to apply these, cos they really helped me and I think he is tired of abusing me now instead, we are now friends and now when he comes in the morning he would say "hw are u?" and sometimes smile.

The world definition of a child is either by BIRTH or by ADOPTION. Am happy for this trend that u brought up, unlike others that sound piting in their choice of words, I encourage ur boldness on this issue. I pray God to give me and my husband such boldness. Adoption is not suppose to be for those that are barren or those that are above the age of given birth, It is suppose to be meant for those that are happy with life and children. Its not supposed to be the last resort after many years of marraige. A child brings happiness in the home (whether the child is given birth to or adopted). I know of a couple that adopted a child and the wife took in dat same month and gave birth to twins. Pls and pls do not listen to any side attraction, talk to ur employer on it, I know they will be happy with u and as I can see, ur husband can handle that of his family. We don't even know the child that would bring success in life, Its beta to die having an adopted child than to die having non.
