PoliticsSee Governor Rochas Okorocha’s Reaction To The Protest By Pensioners by jonhemma11(op): 3:07pm On Jun 17, 2016
The State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha has sincerely commended the pensioners in the state for the peaceful manner with which they had conducted their protest on Thursday, June 16, 2016 over the non-payment of their pensions for certain months.

The governor contends that the Pensioners were right to have gone on protest over their pensions, and had only exercised their guaranteed right of protest over an issue affecting them.

It was as a result of the appreciation of the reason for the protest that made the governor to direct the security agencies in the state and all the government officials to be on their toes for the period the protest had lasted to ensure that no pensioner involved in the exercise was insulted or touched. And the pensioners had had undisrupted outing, and even chased away the Commissioner for Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) who was sent to talk with them on what could be made available for them as entertainment, while discussion with their leaders would follow.

However, the only area the governor felt and still feel worried with the pensioners was their failure or inability to find out the reason for the delay in the payment of their pensions since such situation had not arisen before now.

The pensioners in the state do not need to be told that the governor loves them greatly and would have also loved to pay them all the arrears outrightly given the option since he had paid them religiously since 2011, until now. And the governor had expected the pensioners to ask question and find out the reason for the delay this time.

Since 2011, and before the current economic challenges across the nation, the government had paid the pensioners in the state without taking cognizance of certain lapses in the administration of the pension payments and the number of genuine pensioners in the state.

But the economic situation in the country at the moment occasioned by the mismanagement of the country’s resources over the years, which has also affected negatively the financies of the states has called for stringent measures in the payment of salaries and pensions.

It was this development that had compelled the government to find out why between 2011 and now, the number of pensioners in the state has snowballed by 500 percent, and the amount involved gone from hundreds of millions of naira to billions of naira.

That was one of the reasons the government embarked on verification. And preliminary findings have shown that a cartel had used the opportunity offered to them by the change of government in 2011 to inflate unpatriotically the number of pensioners in the state to a level that is unbelievable. And that is what the government has been assiduously working to rectify.

And the truth remains that once the government succeeds in separating the fake pensioners from the genuine ones, the genuine ones would be paid their pensions. And this action will be taken in a matter of weeks.

The governor therefore regrets the delay and at the same time appeals to the pensioners in the state for their understanding, bearing in mind that he meant well for them since 2011 when he became governor.

It is equally important to let the pensioners know that those urging them to take one action or the other do not love them more than governor Okorocha. For instance, the owner of the particular Radio station in the state that had tried to make out something sinister from the pensioners’ protest was reported to have got more than N750 million from the 4 billion dollars’ arms purchase scandal, and the pensioners should ask those in the radio station why they didn’t bring up the N750 million issue for discussion.

Once more, the governor appeals to the pensioners in the state for understanding.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor

SENATOR MARK COMMENDS GOVERNOR WIKE FOR BEING AN AGENT OF GENUINE DEVELOPMENT

•commissions road in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area
• Governor Wike says PDP will continue to deliver the benefits of democracy

Former Senate President, Senator David Mark has commended Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike for being an agent of genuine development for the people of the state.

This is as Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike declared that the PDP will continue to solve the developmental challenges of the people by keeping campaign promises made to the people.

Commissioning the 8-kilometre Ozuoba-Ogbogoro-Rumuolumeni road in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area on Saturday, the former Senate President described the governor as agent of "true change" who has improved the living condition of the people by his delivery of democracy dividends.

Senator Mark said that Governor Wike has used his mandate to positively change the developmental outlook of Rivers State, keeping his promises, instead of giving excuses for failure.
Speaking on the projects delivery of Governor Wike , Senator Mark said : "so far, he has governed well , now people are beginning to see the results of the promises that he made.

"He is not only keeping his promises , he also has the welfare of the people at heart. That is what governance is all about. Those who voted him are reaping in the benefits of democracy.

"Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike is a man of action who keeps to his words and promises. I want to thank you for keeping to your promises.'
He said all the PDP Governors have kept their promises, while those who promised change to Nigerians have failed to deliver.

"I am a great advocate of change the change. Because what brought APC to power is change. Now we have seen that change has not taken place. We have to change that change now. Why we must change the change is because those who called for change are not keeping their promise", Senator Mark said.

In his address, Governor Wike said that in his projects delivery framework, he is not concerned about who awarded the project, but its impact on the lives of the people.

He said: "For us, as PDP we knew there were problems before we made pledges. That is why we are resolving the problems that we met on ground . It does not matter the party you belong, we shall continue to deliver democracy dividends to all Rivers people "

He said that as a governor he will always work in line with the campaign promises he made , because the people have always supported him.
"I pleaded with you to give me your mandate when I came here to campaign. Today, I am back to fulfill that pledge because you gave me the opportunity to serve", the governor said.
The governor reiterated his commitment to flush out cultists from the state, noting that security agencies have been given the free hand to deal decisively with cultists.

He said: "Since they have said that I will not sleep, they will not sleep. Anyone who is arrested, will be dealt with in line with the tenets of the law. Whether you belong to the PDP or APC, you will not be spared if you are a cultist".

Works Commissioner, Bathuel Iheanyichukwu said the road was awarded by the previous administration, but abandoned at 30percent completion stage. He said the road was impassable before Governor Wike reconstructed it and revived economic activities in the area.

PoliticsNigerian Man Desmond Nunugwo Dies In EFCC Custody by jonhemma11(op): 3:44pm On Jun 10, 2016
Desmond Nunugwo, a suspect under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), passed away today June 10, 2016 few hours after he was taken into custody. His demise was confirmed at the hospital where he was rushed after he suddenly took ill.

Late Nunugwu allegedly fraudulently obtained N91million from an acquaintance after he tricked her into believing that he had high net worth business associates in Dubai, United Arab Emirates who were at the verge of buying Nicon Insurance and convinced her of their disposition to help her stock fish business. Consequently, she wired N91m into Nunugwo’s nominated account (Mainagge General Merchants) in Diamond Bank.

After the transfer of the funds, Nunugwo became evasive forcing the complainant to report the transaction to the EFCC.

Consequently, Nunugwo was arrested in Utako, Abuja at about 5.33pm on Thursday, June 9, 2016. His statement was taken, where he admitted receiving the money from the complainant, with the additional information that he transferred N30m of the said money to Norway. But he could not explain the whereabouts of the balance of N61m.

The suspect was detained at about 7.30pm, in the absence of anybody to take him on bail.
Six hours later, he suddenly complained of discomfort and was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The incident has already been reported at the Wuse Police Station, where investigation into the cause of the sudden death has commenced.

Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC) Press Release

Dangote Group supports plan to diversify Nigeria’s exports away from oil

A new milestone was reached this week, with the presentation of the national ‘Zero Oil’ plan to senior leadership of the Dangote Group, in line with the current administration's agenda of restructuring the economy to no longer depend on crude oil exports.

This engagement by the Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC) is part of a nationwide roadshow to engage stakeholders and investors on the government's vision of making Nigeria’s overdependence on crude oil, a thing of the past.

The Dangote Group is Nigeria’s largest conglomerate, and also one of the nation’s highest earners of non-oil foreign exchange. The Group already distributes goods produced in Nigeria across West and Central Africa, and has set its sights on more growth in markets beyond.

Mr Segun Awolowo, ED\CEO NEPC, presented the ‘Zero Oil’ plan to the Dangote Group, emphasizing the use of exports as a core driver of - job creation, increased investments, growth in government income, and better macro stability (through more foreign exchange inflows).

Nigeria's interventions to boost the supply of foreign exchange (i.e. through exports), will augment other actions that reduce foreign exchange demand. The economic miracle seen in East Asian countries, in a single generation, was anchored primarily on the growth and diversification of exports in those markets. The Nigerian government plans to achieve the same in a shorter period.

The Zero Oil plan has set a long term goal of earning 20 percent of Nigeria’s GDP (i.e. US$100 billion) from non-oil exports. The initial target however is to exceed US$30 billion annually in non-oil exports over the next 10 years (starting from US$5 billion today). The Dangote Group presents a strong example to corporate Nigeria as the Group continues to invest heavily in a number of strategic sectors central to Nigeria’s export diversification plans – including Petrochemicals, Sugar, Cement, amongst others.

In attendance at the presentation were, Alhaji Aliko Dangote (President Dangote Group), Olakunle Alake (COO Dangote Group), Mr Segun Awolowo (ED/CEO NEPC), and others.
Many oil exporting countries have recently introduced national plans to stop their over-dependence on oil, most recently Saudi Arabia.

The Zero Oil plan articulates Nigeria's commitment to its own export diversification. The NEPC' continues its nationwide roadshow to build a Nigerian economy no longer dependent on oil exports. This will include consultations with major investors, trade associations, small businesses, State governments, and foreign missions\partners.

RIVERS STATE IS SAFE FOR INVESTMENT --Governor Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that despite the security challenges facing the Niger Delta , Rivers State is peaceful for investments.

The governor also called on the United Kingdom to partner with the Rivers State Government in the areas of Agriculture and Vocational Education for the generation of employment.
The Government of the United Kingdom also declared that they will partner with the Rivers State Government in the area of youth empowerment.

He spoke at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Wednesday when he received the High Commissioner of United Kingdom to Nigeria, Mr Paul Arkwright.
He explained that strategies have been put in place for the enhancement of the security across the state; pointing out that the State and Federal Governments have taken relevant steps to address the challenges posed by militancy in the Niger Delta.

He said that the meeting between Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, Niger Delta Governors and the Military High Command mapped out critical measures, including opening up of dialogue channels with the Niger Delta Avengers to resolve recent security challenges.

He blamed the cult related conflicts in the state on oil companies that patronise cult groups to secure their pipelines, instead of working with security agencies. He said such patronage leads to supremacy conflicts between cult groups.

He informed the High Commissioner of the United Kingdom that a particular oil company is responsible for empowering the cult groups, noting that the matter is being addressed.

Governor Wike called on the Government of the United Kingdom to partner with the state to generate mass employment and enhance economic growth.
"We want to partner with the Government of the United Kingdom in the agricultural sector to create jobs for our unemployed youths. Government will continue to create a secure environment to improve the environment for Agriculture. The Mexicans are already here investing in agriculture.

"We also need partnership in the area of vocational education to also create job opportunities for our youths", he said.
In his remarks, the High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to Nigeria, Mr Paul Arkwright said that the relationship between the United Kingdom and Rivers State will be deepened.

He said that he was in the state to get first hand knowledge of developments in the state to identify areas of collaboration.
The governor later led the High Commissioner of the United Kingdom on an inspection of the remodeling of the Brick House and the Chapel within the premises of the Government House, Port Harcourt.
