Former governor of Abia State Orji Uzor Kalu was arraigned today over a number of charges bordering on corruption at the Federal High Court by EFCC. The ex-governor is alleged to have, amongst other offences, while he was the Governor of Abia State in 2003, procured Slok Nigeria Limited to retain its account domiciled with a commercial bank in the sum of 200 million Naira and that the sum formed part of the funds illegally derived from the treasury of Abia State government through another commercial bank. However, his trial was stalled by Justice Anuli Chickere who said she could not go on with the case when an aspect of the matter was still pending at the Supreme Court. Justice Chikere adjourned the case to June 30. One of the parties charged in the case, Slok Airlines, which also belongs to Mr Kalu, has an appeal pending at the apex court. During proceedings, counsel to Slok Nigeria Limited, Mr Solomon Akuma, drew the attention of the court to the pending appeal by his client, Slok Nigeria Limited, before the Supreme Court which had not been heard. Mr Kalu’s trial is coming more than eight years after he was first arraigned for misappropriation of state’s funds. It should be recalled that Supreme Court on March 18 gave the EFCC a ‘go-ahead’ to prosecute the former Governor. The charge predicated on alleged complicity of the former Governor in money laundering and illegal diversion of public funds of about 5.6 billion Naira. Mr Kalu was alleged to have perpetuated the fraud between 1999 and 2007 while he was the Governor of Abia State. Source: http://www.trezzyblog.com/2016/05/efcc-arraigns-orji-uzor-kalu-in-court.html

Sen. Mark urges new zonal executives to reclaim North Central states for PDP in 2019 The former President of the Senate, Sen. David Mark has urged the newly elected executives of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the North-Central zone to reclaim the zone for the party in 2019. Mark gave them the task at the party's North Central zonal congress held on Saturday in Abuja. He said that both the party leaders and members in the zone must sacrifice individual interest and work in unity to lead PDP in north central and other zones to victory in future elections. ``The North Central use to be the hub and centre of PDP, unfortunately in the 2015 elections we lost and there is no PDP governor in the zone as we speak. ``We have realised our mistakes and we will correct them. Once those mistakes are corrected we will win all our elections. ``So far all the re-run that have been done PDP has won them. I think this is a track record and the only thing left is that we need to work a little more. ``The party must now stand united. Our strength is in our unity and our weakness will be if we divide ourselves and we will not be divided. ``We must subject our individual interest to party interest within the zone. That is the only way we can make progress,’’Mark said. He added that what gave him joy was that anytime PDP gathered "there is so much enthusiasm, interest sand desires" as Nigerians now realised that "PDP is the right party to be in government." ``We will exercise patient in any election that is done now and in the next three years I can assure you that PDP will win convincingly,’’ Mark added. All the new zonal executives of the party were elected by consensus. Some of the elected zonal executives are Mr Theophilus Shan (Zonal Chairman); Mr Mourice Tsar (Zonal Secretary), and Mr Joel Adagadzu (Zonal Organising Secretary). Sen. Philip Aduda, the Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), said it was commendable that the party was able to arrive at consensus on all the elected offices. "This is important as it will put the party on the path of victory in future elections," Aduda said. The PDP National Legal Adviser, Mr Victor Kwon, who administered oath of office on the newly elected officials of the zone, expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of the congress. Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Friday expressed dissatisfaction at the deplorable state of some sections of Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, saying the road was too strategic to the economy of the State and therefore cannot be ignored. Governor Ambode, who made an unscheduled inspection tour of the road while returning from the grand opening of a 70, 000 capacity Motorbikes Assembly Plant in Mile 2, directed the State’s Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and other relevant government agencies to immediately move to site and fix the bad portions of the road. A visibly worried Governor Ambode had stopped his convoy and came down from his vehicles to inspect the bad portions of the road alongside top government officials who accompanied him. The Governor specifically inspected the bad portions of the road between Berlett and Ilasa, and Cele Bus stop inward Oshodi. Governor Ambode not only directed the officials of the Ministry of Works to immediately move to site, but also ordered that an immediate palliative measure must be put in place to alleviate the sufferings of motorists who have been complaining about the deplorable state of the road through various means. While addressing some of the crowd that trooped out to welcome him, Governor Ambode said the bad state of the road was of serious concern to him, and that an immediate solution was coming soon. He said: “The state of this road is just not acceptable. We are going to do something about this place immediately. The Oshodi-Apapa Expressway is too strategic to be left like this. “I have directed officials of the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and other relevant agencies to move to site immediately and see what they can do and also create palliatives in the interim to alleviate the plight of motorists. “I want to assure the people that I share in the difficulties they are going through using this road and we cannot afford to neglect this road,” he said. The elated crowd, realizing the fact that Governor Ambode has a reputation for keeping to his words, acknowledged and appreciated the promise, saying the repair of the road was long overdue, adding that such would go a long way in bringing succor to them. Days after the Nigerian government removed fuel subsidies and raised the price cap to N145 per liter, Nigerians experienced shorter fuel lines.Nigerian activists took to the streets of Oyo,Ibadan, to protest hike in fuel price. Demand for fuel dropped when the price increased. The government is hoping, however, that higher fuel prices caused by the removal of subsidies will compel oil marketers to import more oil into the country, which would remedy Nigeria’s fuel scarcity. Theoretically, if the supply of fuel increases, so too will competition, which will drive down prices in the long run, according to some experts. Read a state released on the official site of EFCC below...... The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Wednesday, May 10, 2016 arraigned some top officials of the Federal School of Medical Laboratory Technology, FSMLT, Jos, Plateau State before Justice Y. G. Dakwak of the Plateau State High Court sitting in Jos on a 15-count charge bordering on conspiracy and diversion of funds to the tune of N359m (Three Hundred and Fifty-Nine Million Naira). The accused persons are: Dr. Nkereuwem Sunday Etukudo, Provost, FSMLT, Jos; Yusuf Samuel, Accountant, FSMLT; Ernest Demtoe, Secretary of Tenders Board, FSMLT; Goodluck Echewa and Esio Udoh, both contractors of FSMLT. The arraignment, however, was stalled after the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th defendants had pleaded not guilty to count one of the charges. N. D. Gwaisu, counsel to the fifth accused person (Udoh) raised an objection, saying that since his client, who is a contractor, was never employed by FSMLT, “there was no offence linking him to the charges of misappropriation of funds.” Consequently, he prayed that the name of the fifth accused person be struck out from count one of the charge. In his response, prosecution counsel, Samuel Okereke, urged the court to discountenance the application of the defence and call on the defendant to take his plea, describing it ‘‘as a misguided and utter misrepresentation of the law.’’ According to him, "Count 1 deals with criminal conspiracy and not misappropriation, as it relates to the accused. The defendant is accused under Section 96 (1a), which is punishable under Section 97 of the Penal Code. The 5th accused doesn't need to be a staff to reach an agreement to do the illegal act. The defence counsel's objection is hinged on proof, which is very different. We maintain that there is no ambiguity." Ruling on the matter, Justice Dakwak held that, “the charge is not ambiguous. It indicates an agreement between all accused to commit an illegal act. The objection raised is a matter of evidence. As such, the 5th defendant will take his plea." The 5th defendant pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him. Following the pleas of not guilty by the first, second, third and fourth defendants to the second count, Gwaisu raised yet another objection, urging the court to strike out the name of the fifth defendant from the charge. He said, "The grounds for objection are the same as that of the first count: ambiguity. The charge is an internal affair of FSMLT, Jos. It is a defective charge and a case of mis-joinder. Additionally, the offence is prescribed by Section 289 of the Penal Code, which has to do with employees. The fifth accused is not an employee." However, Okereke also urged the court to discountenance the defence’s prayer, saying that, “the charge specifically mentioned theft. The accused doesn't have to be a staff of the school to steal from it. There is a nexus between this charge and the defendant. More so, the 5th accused is listed in the charge as a contractor and is bound by a contract of service to the institution.’’ Justice Dakwak saw some merit in the argument of the defence, as he ruled that ‘‘the 5th defendant was not bound by a contract of service, and would not take a plea. Therefore, his name is struck out of the charge.’’ Consequently, Justice Dakwak adjourned the matter to May 16, 2016 for conclusion of the arraignment and ruling on all pending applications.
