Good morning esteemed colleagues,

I received an official GRA offer which includes full tuition waiver and fees from my potential advisor yesterday for fall 2019 at University of Kansas (KU). She notified me by mail on Thursday that she had secured 2 years GRA offer for me regardless of the outcome the fellowship offer I was nominated and applied for 8 weeks ago. The offer is in addition to School of Engineering scholarship I was awarded 5 weeks back.

I greatly appreciate the effort of everyone on this thread. Full funding mail will continue to flow in for all.

Congrats to everyone who's got their F1's'; thanks for keeping faith with the process. If you're waiting, I also wish you the best. I figure people could use some help here coming to the US this Fall, (or whenever you want to come). So here goes. Hopefully, we can switch to the other (Life in the USA) thread when y'all get here.

First, reach out to folks in your school to help you with arrival. What plane to fly with, schedule airport pick up, housing arrangements, and settling in a place within few days of arrival. Schools have the Int'l Student offices that would help you do most of these, so don't hesitate to shoot them emails, ask them about anything and everything you're worried about as an Int'l student. They won't be surprised, in fact they would be excited you're curious and eager to come. So, ask away!

Speaking of Nigerian folks in your school, Linkedin works great! Google 'Research Assistant' 'School Name' Nigeria Linkedin ; you can use other variations like 'Teaching Assistant', 'Graduate Teaching Assistant', "Master's Student", 'Graduate Student', 'Graduate Research Assistant', 'PhD candidate', 'Doctoral candidate', 'PhD Student;, 'Post doctoral candidate' and so forth.

So, if I'm looking to connect with Nigerian grad students @ Stanford, I'll use, for instance, research assistant Stanford Nigeria Linkedin
on Google. This way, you can make solid connections, ask for their help, and if they can't help you, refer you to someone who can.

"Why should they help you?" Good question. I'm glad I asked. Here's why, in my opinion. They know what it feels like to be exactly where you're right now. And more importantly, they ask for help everyday. At least, I ask for help every single day. It therefore goes without reason, that getting people to help me means I'm ready to assist others as well.

Plus, it definitely helps we're Nigerians. We 'get' each other. So, start connecting.

PS: The 'Search' function on Nairaland doesn't work quite well. Except you go right through the transcripts. And see who's currently attending your school. Hopefully, we have a decent database of something along those lines pretty soon.

That takes care of your arrival, and what not. Remember, ask questions. Don't be shy, don't hesitate. You never know who's gonna say 'yes', or 'no'.

Next up, studying in America comes with its whole set of challenges. I wish I had braced up for them, prior to arrival.
Good day,pls I just sent u a Pm

Visa approved this morning at Lagos Consulate by the purportedly mean Chinese-looking guy. After dishing out blue papers, it finally got to my turn.

VO: Good morning Ma'am
Me: Good morning
VO: What are you going to do in the US?
Me: I am going to study for a PhD in Materials Engineering at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville
VO: Cool. Pass me your documents
Me: [Obliged]
VO: [Critically peruses my I-20 while I stare at him like one mumu girl and then he exclaims...] Wow! You got a full package from UVA! UVA is a great school. I am so excited for you and I can imagine you can't wait to start! Wow! This is nice! Are you excited?
Me: Yes, I am. Thank you. [At this point, I was just too shocked because it was not kind of interview I have been hearing about on here. I expected those their standard questions, which I had ready answers for]
VO: When last were you in the US?
Me: February last year, on vacation
VO: I am still so excited for you!
Me: Thank you
VO: Where is your husband?
Me: He is outside
VO: [Types and stares at his screen...] Honestly, everything looks perfect..... [Hands me white paper]. Enjoy Your studies!
Me: Thank you

End of interview that did not feel like interview. After all my prepped-up answers sad wink grin

Anyways, thanks guys and ladies. You guys have been of immense help on this thread and on the GRE thread. I try my best to help out to the best of my ability. I wish everyone success in their interviews.
Wow! This is awesome.Congrats

Thanks for the kind gesture, but am not shying away to pay application process, its because of what is weitten on their site"admission comes with funding" and also their research concerning my major. I am also applying to Arizona state university, New Jersey institute of technology, University of Arkansas.please can you list out some safe schools for me.
Ndawe:
Yes, their application is free but then, it also makes the chances of getting admitted very narrow (that does not mean they don't admit). But look at it this way, because their application is free, so many people will apply and the school gets extra picky with admission spots. I applied there as well and didn't get in + I know people who had even better profiles than I did, who also applied and didn't get in. I'm guessing you're shying away from paying application fees and if so, it's not worth it. Apply to as many schools as you can and even Michigan Tech (if you may) but don't bank on Michigan Tech. All the best.
EducationRe: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by Joyflexxy(f): 6:48am On Apr 27, 2017
Thanks
iCool:
A high GRE score will help makeup for the 'low' GPA.

Admission will also look more likely and you will also stand a chance at getting funded.

I had to resit for the GRE too and I am glad I did.
EducationRe: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by Joyflexxy(f): 6:46am On Apr 27, 2017
Thanks, but on the school page it is written that your admission guarantees your funding, and also assistantship. Please can you list some of these safe schools for me?
electronic:
If its free application fees, just forget about funding. I don't think they fund. You scores are really low so you need to rewrite GRE and TOEFL. Try to publish your undergraduate research work in a free journal. If possible do a WES evaluation of your result. Finally apply to extremely safe schools cheesy . don't rush things prepare well, if possible aim for fall 2018 so you can blast GRE. I wrote twice too!
Best of luck
