Mamatukwas: A landlord can make a claim higher than the value of the deposit to the deposit holding organisation. That said, the adjudicator for the organisation can only award the sum of funds held in their custody, they have no authority to force the tenant to pay the difference between the cost of damages and amount of deposit. Factors such as wear and tear, length of tenancy are taken into account. A landlord has legal standing to sue a tenant for the cost of fixing damages in a small claims court. The answer to your question is yes, nothing stops a landlord from making a claim higher than the deposit through the court not the deposit organisation. The landlord has to decide whether it will be cheaper to fix the damages or paying a lawyer as it could be a lengthy process. Also you can only use invoice of damage fixed as evidence as to the cost of the claim, an estimate is not deemed acceptable. Most sensible landlords would have a building, fixtures and legal cover. Thankfully I have only had to deal with claiming off one tenant's deposit at the end of a tenancy. She made a big mess with fake tan on a bedroom carpet. I only charged her half of the cost as the carpet had been in the property for years and she was a very good tenant for 4years. She agreed and the deposit was apportioned in under 24hrs. 1 Like |

Temi231: I will recommend J&W carpets, they are cheaper than the standard carpet retailer. Take measurements of each room and have an idea of what colour you're after. They have stores in Glasgow and all across Scotland. I would suggest Dunelm for curtains, their curtains are good quality at reasonable price. Remember to get thermal curtains. 12 Likes 11 Shares |

Aliyu40: Hi Aliyu, If she has her marriage certificate then you can add that too. Add pictures of her and your Dad. Your dad is also a home tie for your mum, imply it in your letter. Does your brother still live at home or near home, include it if it's the case. |

Walatip397: Below is the link for contacting UKVI. The GWF number is a good start. He obviously knows his name and DOB. Your friend might as well try to call else he'll continue to be in the dark. God forbid he has a ban he won't even know about it. The other option is for him to request all information held by UKVI on him directly. It also occurred to me that the screenshot might be from the earlier part of his application and it has since been updated, which is why he was able to pick up his passport. https://www.gov.uk/contact-ukvi-inside-outside-uk/y/outside-the-uk/something-else/english |

Walatip397: Can you confirm with your friend that the blurred part is showing his name, to ensure its not someone else's log in. Also you said your friend picked up his passport, where did he collect his passport from? When a paid mail is sent, often you'll get a response within 5working days officially. Many UK threads on nairaland has shown that they respond within a day or two. I sent a paid mail last week Friday and got a response after 15mins of sending the paid mail. There is close to zero chance that they have not responded all this while, even if it's to say they are looking into it. Has your friend considered calling UKVI, or going to TLS where he did his biometric. Looks like the agent is hiding something, else why hide the email address. |

Aliyu40: I'm sorry about your mum's refusal. No, there was no misrepresentation in the previous application. She is retired and it is okay to provide documents dated 2003. My mum recently provided employment letter dated back to 1988 without any issue. A cover letter is crucial in helping the ECO connect the dots. Draft a supporting cover letter for your mum addressed to the ECO explaining why unemployed option was chosen in the last application. Even if you have to print a year's worth of bank statement to proof that she receives pension, then do so, remember to highlight the entries to make ECO's job easier. Your mum must have income of some kind, even if it is from her children, even if it's not regular. It shows that she has enough to look after herself in Nigeria. Crucially, you need to proof that she has strong home ties to Nigeria. Do you have other siblings in Nigeria, does she have grandchildren in Nigeria (add family pictures). Does your mum own any land, house or car, If she does add the documents. Take your time before putting in her next application unless the purpose of her visit is time bound. Gather all required documents, draft the letters and ensure you cover all points mentioned by the ECO. I wish your mum all the best in her next application. |

DareFerd: If I were in your shoes I will raise a complain. It's completely unacceptable and unjustifiable. That's almost 8months to process a visit visa, even ILR and Citizenship barely take that long to process. |

Munamoqel: I agree with most of your points. The PSW permit is not new, I have few friends in Scotland who benefited from the scheme pre 2011. You are right in saying that majority of them went back as they could not find jobs. That said, i think it's easier for couples to afford the rest of the fees because the dependent can work without restrictions on hours of work allowed unlike the main applicant during term time. Also there are other possibilities to switch visa category for either the student or dependent. Couples who have Kids above school age 5 will cope as little childcare would be needed during term time. The cost of putting children in nursery can be crippling, so I can understand bringing a parent in to help as the savings can go towards school fees. However, single applicants who haven't paid a big chunk of their school fees before enrolment (or have it saved already) will struggle, as 20hrs a week is just going to cover your cost of living. Where will school fees come from? If you happen to have well settled family members in the UK that can help, you may be fine. I have helped a few friends with securing admissions, and I keep preaching that 20hrs will not solve the problem, just being realistic. I have lost track of the number of links friends have sent me to contribute to help students from Nigeria who can't pay their school fees, because of unforseen circumstances. I will advise people coming through the study route to plan properly and do your costings. The last thing you want is to be stranded. Also, PSW fees is high and extortionate combined with health surcharge too. Imagine the cost for a whole family of 4 or 5. The study route is a great opportunity for families and singles alike as approval rates are high, we just have to plan well. Without proper planning, students will start defaulting on their payment to their prospective universities. These universities are obligated to report to UKBA. It is only a matter of time before schools start demanding higher deposits or full payment. We should not ruin it for others. 13 Likes 1 Share |

rayralph: It's quite interesting to read that racist locals can be an issue in that part of scotland. I'm curious to know if this is peculiar to Paisley. I have always found the Scots and Irish to be the most accommodating of all four nations. Infact, Glaswegians are the most friendliest of all. There's bound to be dredge of society everywhere, but I'm yet to have a single racist encounter in over 10years of living scotland. I experienced racism living in three cities in England over a period of 7years before relocating to scotland. 5 Likes |

Ugochinyere1: Check rightmove, zoopla, gumtree and Facebook marketplace. Consider placing an advert on Gumtree too. Beware of scammers on gumtree and Facebook market place. Also are you looking for a flat or room? There are websites such as spareroom where rooms are advertised. Try a general search on Google with the search term 'flat share in aberdeen' and 'house share in aberdeen'. I hope you find a place soon. |

Nnemomatina: Congratulations in advance. It sounds like good news. The current trend is no refusal email in inbox or junk means approval. Please when was the biometric capture date for the application, I have an outstanding application for my parents, trying to gauge how long this process might take. Sorry, I do not have any information on health insurance. It's not something I have ever considered, it'll be interesting to know the benefits and cost. If anyone has experience please it will be helpful. In the past I've just taken my mum to our local gp, registered her as a visitor. She had consultations and was prescribed medication which we paid for. We also have to pay for her prescriptions at the pharmacy although prescriptions are free in Scotland. We keep all the receipts for visa applications and it has never been an issue. |

kellexxx: If your future plan entails relocation, then nursing might be your best bet. I believe to be able to register to practice in Canada, US and Australia one needs to sit NCLEX exam. Canada allows experienced Social workers to apply for PR without having a job offer as the occupation is on the targeted occupation list. Experienced UK qualified social workers can also work in Australia under the skilled worker route. I think working in the US is complicated due to different state laws and registration. Carry out online research and be sure of your decision before commiting to study. I wish you all the best, as either profession would be for the greater good of society. 2 Likes |

kellexxx: The choice is yours and it's down to your personal preference. Consider which of the career paths you will be most fulfilled in. When you wake up in the morning to defrost your car in the cold or walking to catch the train, which of the choices will put a spring in your steps, which would likely make you want to stay in bed. Personally, I'ld rather be a social worker than be a nurse, no disrespect to nurses out there. Infact, i have a huge amount of respect for the amazing work you guys do, being part of the fabric that holds our NHS together. My personal opinion is that nurses are underpaid for the job they do. There is a huge demand for social workers out there too and they are well paid. That said, being a social worker can be a high stress job for someone who isn't resilient and it entails a huge amount of paper work. I have a few social worker friends who enjoy making a difference to society. They are able to work from home or the office whilst still carrying out home visits. Mileages for these visits are reimbursed. Ultimately, consider how your personality fits in with the roles and what will make you happy in the long term. 3 Likes |

Peerielass: Yes, you can use downloaded PDF versions of bank statement for visa as it is the same as the bank will post out to you. Most banks encourage their customers to go paperless these days. As long as it shows your name, address, account details, transactions and branch address you are fine. No one in the branch has the time to issue paper statements with stamps anymore. |

Ajiboyehify: During application, the ECO will use Oanda rate when looking at your POF. For payment of visa and NHS surcharge, if you are using a domiciliary account card that you need to fund with black market sourced currency, then it'll be black market rate. If you are using app such as barter by flutterwave, then it'll be their rate. 1 Like 2 Shares |

Betrueiscool: Please report it to the university immediately. Let this be a lesson to us all. Please let's stop sharing our personal details with strangers. My observation on this platform is that we are lazy when it comes to research. Considering this is a student thread, how do you intent to survive study in a first world country when you cannot carry out a simple online search. We live in a world where a lot of us have data, but we want the answer quickly and would rather waste it on nonsense on social media that adds no value to our lives. We enjoy being spoon fed. Half of the questions asked daily have been answered before, but again we are too lazy to read through. Getting an admission to UK university is a doddle. Making it to the UK is not going to fix all your life issues, it only allows you to exist and get by with mediocre mentality. Those that actually excel in their chosen fields are those who can use their initiative and can be self-starters. A word of warning to all planning to come to the UK, you are coming to a country with set laws and order. No one will collect bribe from you to turn a blind eye. No lecturer will sleep with you in exchange for grades. You will not get away with such behaviour here. If you cannot leave your barbaric behaviours behind at Muritala Muhammed and Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport please do not come, stay back please. Majority of Nigerians have lived in the UK for decades with impeccable characters. The new influx of migrants should aim to do the same by staying on the right side of the law. A word as they say is enough for the wise. 26 Likes |

CheesyTee: Yes, starling Bank is okay to show proof of funds, holds the same weight as your BOS statement. I find that when downloading statements from traditional high street banks, logging in online is your best bet. It is one of the many limitations of their mobile app, compared to pure online banks such as monzo and starling bank. I am able to specify search dates on my business BOS account and download, I'll expect personal current account to have the same function. |
