Boss13: @ dutchstar you are funny. You are worried about clearing agent that may lose their jobs. Well the policy will not stop importation of fairly used cars but may discourage buyers from buying fairly used cars due to price hike as a result of increase import duties/tariff

How about jobs that will be created from the establishment of the assembly plants. The overall effect of this plant to the economy will be great. Plus the fact that people would be encouraged to drive brand new car. You cannot compare a brand new car to a tokunbo.
price hike will encourage few imports and will translate to clearing agents losing jobs, an Auto plant with 20,000 units annually cannot hire more than 1,000 people, so what is the wisdom in the policy? also you will hear that 980 staff of that company are contract staff meaning;
under paid and misery, so where is the wisdom? thanks to no good labor law and unprecedented corruption.

please don't tell me about indirect jobs, yes, there are indirect jobs in manufacture but they are inconsequential in assembly, if in doubt, how many indirect jobs is PAN creating in Kaduna?
we are talking about people employed by companies that service or supply to them.
In assembly, every thing down to bolts and nuts are sourced abroad and you just have people putting them together, is it what you prefer to the bee hive of activities in NPA and importers doing Tokunbo buisness?

and don't tell me about local content because the oil industry which started it isn't faring any better with it.
like i have said without fear of contradiction, Aganga or whatever his name is, has run out of ideas, study your environment, know what people need before making clueless policies.

chronique: I wonder why most people are complaining about govt's decision to increase the tariff on imported vehicles. Incase most of you do not know, the cars you guys see as affordable for the masses, are mostly junks(flooded/salvaged/accidented vehicles) shipped in by most importers. A lot of Nigerians can't afford clean title cars being brought into the country. Secondly, manufacturing cars here, would take away at least,350-400k(minimal cost of shipping and clearing) from the cost of purchase. Some parts will be produced here, thereby saving us foreign exchange that would have been spent on importing them. Cost of labour here, would be cheaper than what would be paid for labour cost,in a manufacturing plant in the U.S. By the time you take out the cost of shipping and clearing, the amount saved on foreign exchange from importing several parts that can be made here, and then, deducting what you'd save from cheap labour, you'd understand that it's a win-win case for us. At the long run,you get more value from ur brand new cars than your tokunbo. There are some cars in the market that if you deduct their shipping and clearing charges, they'd amount to 200k-400k. If the price of a brand new one is twice/thrice the amount of a tokunbo(after deducting clearing and shipping charges),it means Nigerians "might" be able to get brand new cars between the ranges of 400k/600k - 800k/1.2m,depending on the quality/class of car you need.

For me,I think it's still a win-win situation for Nigerians.
trust me, it will not play out that way, at a time when PAN was assembling 504, a brand new piece sold for 2.4m, this piece has no power steering, no airbags, no CD player, no ABS, no traction control etc nothing of comfort, just a piece of iron. Even at that, our govt patronized them for so long without recourse to research and development till Tokunbo importation struck.

Now, will you say it is true value for money as to allude a win win for us? brother, the story of ABA leather industries, the bailed out textile industries are eye opening enough.

you forgot this two monsters, cost of production and corruption.

Cuche: Mr Philips you write well, I was reading your biased write up on Ngige. Was that the reason for demanding I should tell you about Fidelity bank merger? Peter Obi is the greatest thief to emerge from Nigeria, that his criminal agenda was the only reason he schemed out Soludo Solution can't be disputed. Ngige is more intelligent than Obi and his Stooge put together, he is more energetic, Besides he loves his people
You don't need to call anybody illiterate, just present your opinion, somebody might be educated by it Full stop
My dear Cuche, what i wrote about Ngige were facts and to set the record straight, i expect you to return facts to dispute them, however ,returning "no facts" and ending up with the word "biased" is an insult, so the two options you have are

1 dispute the claims with counter facts OR
2 shut the hell up.

i never called Ngige an illiterate because there are some things i know about him personally that proves otherwise, however, if you are referring to the guy above with the most ridiculous post i ve ever read in years, trust me, it is only an illiterate that nurses such height of misconception and proud enough to throw it around for public consumption, no apologies for that.

suggesting he might be educated from my post is an over statement which contravenes my Magnanimity policy,

thanks for your revered understanding,

Nissan and briscoe, stallion and Hyundai, Toyota and Globe can sign whatever it is not our buisness, the big question is; does it call for govt intervention? do we really wanna create much needed jobs or we want to create a farce of deception while Govt is targeting high revenue for elections?

Nigeria has no business manufacturing cars, we have a lot of area of competitive advantage better than other countries.
As a car manufacturing nation, we cant compete with the Europeans and Asian tigers, that is a fact so why bother ourselves, even America with their level of industrialization is not finding the Japanese competition funny let alone Nigeria.
Innoson can export to Ghana and equally sell to individuals or corporate bodies who are interested, it doesn't call for Govt intervention.

If we really wanna industrialize, we should look at areas where we already have competitive advantage and consolidate on it, Nigeria is sitting on enormous gas reserves have we explored them?

Have we looked at areas of refining where we can export refined products and all west African countries come to us to purchase petroleum products?
What about petrochemical industries? Nigeria has the capacity to produce synthetic tannin, gums, resin, imidazole, plastic (of whichever kind), cellophane, benzene, etc for the whole of Africa, have we looked into those areas?

have we built local capacity in those regards? so what are we manufacturing or assembling cars for? if all these sectors are developed, we are gonna be getting loads of foreign exchange and we are gonna be better off.

ironically, we don't even have sufficient skilled man power to support the Auto industries at least for the next decade so what is the rush for? this insufficient capacity is reflective on the number of quacks who murder our vehicles on a daily basis.

i really don't think that Jonathan is asinine, i think this move is political, the NPA is generating huge money internally for the federal govt as we speak, FIRS will tell better, its election time so there is need to mop up funds by increasing tariffs, OBJ has done it before so Jonathan is playing a script we are used to.

wait a minute, jonathan is actually playing a script, during the unpopular subsidy removal cos (the money was actually used to finance election), he quickly rushed to the press saying the FG has signed contract for 5 refineries to come on board, till date, no show and now this.

come up with an unpopular policy during electioneering, give the masses hope then fleece them dry.

Sir Cee: The most eligible and qualified candidate for this position is NGIGE.
This is the only man that showed Anambrians that there is money in Anambra state.
And he used the money to achieve a lot, roads, education, agriculture, hospitals, etc
He set a pace by dismantling the so called god fatherism in Anambra state, he suffered a lot of oppressions
and set back, yet he proved that he is a man, within his 34 months, he created an impact
that the past Governors never did. Today, Ngige can walk accross the nooks and crannys
of Anambra state with echos NGIGE, NGIGE NGIGE our man. He set a pace where Peter Obi followed to work.
Anambrians, this is our opportunity to say bye bye to god fatherism, interference from oga at the top,
he was tested and can do it again even better. remember the devil we know is better than the angel we dont know.
What Anambra State needs now is a worthy Governor, trusted and who can deliver and not a sentiment governor
based on the fact that Gov. Peter Obi will compensate east, west north or south.
This state is for all of us and we must look beyond sentiment and vote for the right candidate now.
NGIGE is the right candidate.
What do you think Tinubu is to Ngige? bodyguard?

Don Magic Juan: On a serious note, no single investor will want to invest in northern Nigeria for a whole lot of reasons.
Even in the Niger-Delta oil firms are de-investing on-shore and concentrating offshore.
This is one reason coupled with oil theft and vandalization that oil revenues have dropped.

Now picture northern Nigeria today with Boko Haram. Which firm other than an Arab oil company with Arab expats may be tolerated by Muslim fanatics but there is no such thing as Arab oil workers as most of the drilling is done by american, European and Indonesian drillers.

Now after you drill the oil, you need to ship it. The most ideal route will be through Kogi and Ondo. Saboteurs will ensure that this pipeline is constantly vandalized. And who will these saboteurs be? Well the same people who if they don't get their way will always cause trouble; The Tinibus, IBBs, Buharis, etc.
you are a stark illiterate for obvious reasons

Car Talk › Re: Ban On Importation Of Tokunbo Cars: What You Should Know by jpphilips(m): 2:28pm On Oct 08, 2013
Carsonv: I thought someone might still keep in perspective the economic reason for the new regulationn

The Winners as pointed out by the op would actually be winners if the govt doesn't fortify our Cotonou borders. Asides that, it's a good thing for our economy.

We already have some assemblies in the country. And for those troubled by the fact that we'll be driving cars that are still budding in technology lyk IVM, remember Japan's technology didn't just blossom. After WW2, they started making small knives called 'okapi'. Today they're making things we(Nigeria) could only wish we could make.

Let's make the sacrfice, stop importing Tokunbo cars. Buy the tear-rubber cars made in Nigeria. For those who wanna keep making money selling cars, you can go into dealership for these Made in Nigeria cars afterall that's the essence of the regulation...to create market for the MiN cars. By that the manufacturerrs will continue to improve until we start exporting cars.

It's good for us as a Nation, it's good for our economy!

NB: If you still no wan gree my advise, go import Camry 2003 model and sell it for N3Million against a MiN car salon car selling for N800k....#the numbers aint real but I'm sure you get the idea#
Lemme give you a little heads up, the problem with local manufacturing is not patronage, it is cost of production, let me take you to Aba where we believe local manufacturers have succeed to a little extent,
A Made in Aba sandals is two times more expensive than its made in china counterpart after all the compromise on quality.

Nigeria is saddled with a big monster called corruption which makes regulation near impossible, so if all the factors of production are not fixed, the so Called made in Nigeria cars will be very expensive in the face of an outright Ban.
The reason IVM is still within range is because he has competitors from different fronts, brand new importers and fairly used importers, once you take out one major competitor the price will soar.

we have local rice and foreign rice but the price difference is negligible the issues are spread across board on all made in Nigeria goods.

before obj's 11yrs ban, he first tried 5yrs, 7yrs and we all saw the outcome. there is what is called strategic planning and this Jonathan's Govt has proved totally incompetent in that regards.

everyone knew at the time that subsidy removal wasn't the right play 2yrs on, we are not better for it, what does it tell you? this Govt is run solely by fvcktards.

the easiest way to discourage old vehicles is increase their import tarrif, but in Nigeria, we discourage "IMPORT" outrightly when we have no capacity to be self reliant, isn't that crazy?

Remove tariff from brand new and less than 5yr old cars while you slam tariff on older cars, is it too diff for someone in this Govt to figure out?

360command: This is a good plan if govt are to finalize the ban on importation of tokunbo(second hand) cars in Nigeria. With time, there will be car reduction of second hand cars on the street as various alternative of transportation(public) starts increasing with lots of people using it(we hope the govt improves the public transportation to cater for the increased masses). Also, it paves way for automobile industry to come into the Nigerian market and start manufacturing cars, buses etc. just like what is happening in Mexico.

We should put in mind that with this ban, air pollution and noise pollution on our streets and environs will be at a reduction.

sometime ago, en route offshore as we got to the helipad we realized that the chopper was leaking hydraulics, the guy who spotted it was an engr I suppose, so he went to the pilot (a Nigerian) and reported he assured him all is well that we can fly,

then I have already boarded, I was thinking it was a spill from perhaps maintenance but this other guy insisted the pilot doesn't know what he is saying. he now started explaining stuffs to the pilot who at that point started raising his voice perhaps to intimidate the guy.
so he insisted that its only the technical crew that can assure him to fly,

indefiance to access restriction, he went to meet with them and explained it all, on getting there, two brits and another Nigerian with British accent did a check and they apologized and delayed the flight for 3hrs to sort it out but assured us its a minor stuff.

then the other Nigerian with the technical team told the pilot in vernacular that if he had flown that chopper he for swim tire, though he spoke in their dialect, I understood what he said.

it was then the pilot went to check the check list and he started smiling and shaking his head.

im not saying Yakubu isnt a great guy neither am I saying that the ill fated dana plane wasn't a white pilot, neither does living close to him make any difference, all im saying is that Nigerians are risk takers and because of their foundation of impunity, professionalism is negotiable.

It is very premature of me to speculate whether or not the fault is from the pilot, however, since that incident, I am apprehensive of Nigerian pilots.

the power sector is a self sufficient sector which has caught the eyes of foreign investors.
it is commendable for our local fin. institutions to have a stake in the on going reforms however little, however, outside reaping interest for the Apex bank, there is little or nothing for the common man.

employment, contracts aka indirect jobs etc will still be determined by the companies who won the bid.
which leaves them with same options enjoyed by IOC'S in the oil sector.

in my opinion the CBN in a bid to stimulate the economy towards positive growth should design a framework for funding SME'S.

those are the real jobs that will encourage entrepreneurship and self reliance.
