Symphony007: Only a fool like this poster rates development but beauty.....i guess when you marry a wife: beauty comes before brains, let me retrait what matter here; 250 primary and model secondary schools: 150 healthcenters, over a thousand students undergraduate and post graduate students studying abroad: the RSSDA, the largest state developmental agency in nigeria giving out billions in loans and the setting up of the shonghai fish farm. Every rivers child has the opportunity to go to school with worrying of uniform, sandal, bags, books or lunch because all is provided by the government, how amny states in nigeria can assure this to their kids? Can rwanda assure this to their kids? This is what matters; human development; investing in the future of tomorrow. Giving them all the tools they need to grow. I don't need to outline the other infastructural achievements of ameachi because it speaks volumes of your intellectual maturity when you judge development by beautifull buildings and flower. Harare, zimbabwe is a very beautifull city, even better than lagos or abuja....so by your logic i'm guessing zimbabwe who is in such economic decline they use the dollar and even batter is miles ahead of nigeria?
shut up!

After the remodeling of "250 schools", the completed figure is 180, over 12,976 pupils were displaced, do you know why? because old schools that were taking 500pupils now take 350 or less, is that part of your human capital development?
these schools don't have experienced teachers do you know why? because the state was deducting an outrageous amount from their salaries and most sane ones have left, is that part of your human development Agenda?

have you bothered to find out the kinda schools Rivers state sponsor people Abroad and the course they study juxtaposed with the number of beneficiaries? guy, wake up a failure is piloting the affairs of that state,

Lagos would have been doing well in terms of power generation...including others like abia, akwa ibom and rivers but for our useless power distribution law.
If FG law on power distribution is a problem, did it equally stop Amaechi from having organized public transportation system unlike the crickets aka keke that is defacing the streets of ph?

does it stop Amaechi from having a water board that will guarantee a cholera free drinking water for everyone?

does it stop Amaechi from setting up a central command center supported by police patrols for effective policing?

does it stop Amaechi from giving us good roads?

does it stop Amaechi from lightening up the state?

PapaBrowne: Ans: There is no Nigerian city besides Lagos and Abuja that are more developed than Port Harcourt forever. As in even when I was borne in PH yeears ago, it was the second most developed city in Nigeria.

But there are numerous Nigerian Cities that have been better improved than Port Harcourt over the last 5 years. Infact, PH has actually deteriorated while others have improved.
Uyo, Benin, Calabar, Enugu and a host of other have experienced much more improvements than Port Harcourt.

I repeat, I'm a PH boy of sorts as I was born there, grew up a little there and visit quite often. And PH is an Eyesore. The places that should give the city pride are not nice at all. Even GRA and its surroundings nothing to right home about. I was in Enugu around February this year and I met a pleasant surprise. There is pictures of beautiful Cities accross Nigeria and there is no Picture of Port Harcourt. Even Warri, PH's younger sister is beginning to be more impressive than Port Harcourt.

So my question to you: Amaechi has spent $20 Billion in the last 5 years. Can you show me a sinlgle picture of PH that says, money in billions of dollars was spent on me.
Allah bless you, can you imagine a village like ph someone is calling a city? what an insult

That Amaechi does not go about with helicopters like Akpabio taking pictures of Port-Harcourt does not mean he has not done much more. Maybe I should help him with few pictures I'll take in coming weeks.

The Ogoni-Andoni-Opobo road is a notable achievement. Opobo was inaccessible by land since the history of mankind. The Trans-Kalabari highway is also a very big achievement. I don't want to go into upland area like Port-harcourt and environs, schools, hospitals, complete drainage designing and implementation, dualizing and as well upgrading previously deplorable roads etc.

Abagworo: Give him a four year score card. I've not felt much of the impact from FG in Rivers State. The 18hours power I'm enjoying is courtesy Rivers government, the road I travel on whuch is PH-Owerri is work of Rivers government. East-west road and Aba express are the worst major roads in Rivers State. A journey from Port-Harcourt to Obigbo which is 5km takes up to 4 hours. Choba to Eleme is not a better story.

Car Talk › Re: Honda Ball Joints And Upper Arms Problem by jpphilips(m): 9:09am On Sep 24, 2013
ping2ping: There is no doubt Honda makes good vehicles with strong engines and exquisite interior designs. Just consider Toyota Camry 2004 (Big for Nothing) and Honda Accord 2004 (EOD). In terms of the controls, driving pleasure, interior and exterior designs, Honda is clearly on top notch compared to Toyota and thats why Honda cars are classy.

But in terms of rugged and reliability, Toyota is clearly top notch. For example some Honda models are plagued with transmission problems and then the issue of discussion - the frequent ball joint failure in all model of Honda cars. Thats why you see Toyota products being used for commercial transportation more often than other brands and you can hardly see fragile Honda cars/mini vans used for commercial transportation.

The choice actually depends on the buyer, what do you want? You must sacrifice something for something. Where and how you want to use the vehicle may help decide on the product to buy.

I love traveling so i cannot use a car that i will keep listening to the front tyres while on the highway or driving with the mindset that the ball joint can actually pull out. Well thats for me grin grin grin
lol, it is not as bad as you are sounding, just do a round check once in a while and everything will be fine, another thing is this; when you want to change the hose, they are of two types, there is the one mechanics call iron hose and another called rubber hose, the rubber hose is chinese made, pretty useless, always ask for the iron hose, its shorter and tougher

NB: the so called iron hose is not made of iron oooo, it is what the mechanics call it, each iron hose last 1yr before it gives way, while the other last for just 2months or so.
Car Talk › Re: Honda Ball Joints And Upper Arms Problem by jpphilips(m): 9:01am On Sep 24, 2013
ping2ping: First of all, this ball joint issue can be considered design flaw from Nigerian point of view because of the nature of our roads.

But @lonelydora said using OEM parts could prevent it from happening. I wouldn't really know how true this is because even new honda cars are prone to having this problem.

It is also said that it doesn't happen on a high speed but a colleague in this office experience that on the Ibadan - Ilorin express way on high speed. Although i have seen some others on a rough road and one particularly while climbing a bump. We all know how our high ways are, can somebody drive without chance of entering one pot hole or the other? Or is it better to change it especially the steering ball joint each time you want to travel?

A couple of people say that before a pull out, you will hear an unusual noise from the front tyres which will serve as indicator to the problem. Considering that people drive around with AC on and the windows wound up and sometimes with radio/music on inside the car. This will not allow you to hear any of such sound. I just imagine travelling at 120/140Km/h with music of course, how on earth will one hear such noise from the tryes? Unless there is a sensor to alert the driver of problem else, it is practically impossible unless within the city

Worst of all, what if you notice the sign of imminent failure of the ball joint on a lonely area on highway? I wouldn't know if there is a guarantee that after changing the ball joint it is going to last for at least say 6 months before any chance of it pulling out on the road then one might consider that especially when travelling.
very legitimate concerns you have up there, however i strongly believe that car companies can still come up with a ball joint void of the hose arrangement, that will solve the problem at least to the pulling out extent.
Do check that hose before you travel, if it is broken, fix it before embarking on any journey, that's what i do and it works for me.
Car Talk › Re: Honda Ball Joints And Upper Arms Problem by jpphilips(m): 12:57pm On Sep 22, 2013
how many comercial vehicles do all these checing u are talking about on their various brands of vehicle? how many of them do have ball joint issues compared to honda? honda has ball joint design flaw.thats what we are saying
I agree it is a design flaw, lemme talk about the ball joint aka shaft by our mechanics.

the bearing and the lubrication is housed in a rubber hose, that rubber hose is what I detest, why can't car companies come up with a better mechanism against the rubber stuff?
now, the rubber case is not only peculiar to Honda but Toyota and almost all manufacturers, so i think design isnt really the problem but useage.

the rubber hose will crack with time, and all the grease in the bearing will leak away leaving the bearing in high friction, also when you swim with your car as d case with Nigerian roads, water and mud will find its way into the bearing case and the bearing will crack.

I don't agree with people who said theirs dont make noise, it does but in higher honda models, winding up with AC leaves the car sound proof.
so u don't hear doesn't mean it is not there esp when you turn your wheels full.

now the panacea is this; changing ball joints fall under routine maintenance, that is why you find the ones replaced by oyibo in our belgium market.

periodically once you park your vehicle, wheel to the right and left fully and check the condition of the hose, if it is broken no matter how little, change the hose, with 1, 000, you can buy the hose and a labor cost of 1k can change it as well.

changing that hose and lubricating the joints each time will guarantee the joint doesnt fail, though Toyota and passat do pull out, it is not as often as the Hondas.

reason is; the noise will be unbearable at that point so users tend to change it from then.

on no occasion should you buy a china made ball joint, it is usually new, the hose it comes with is hopeless so it fails often, while buying the hose ensure you do a leak test on it before installation. that huge embarrassment usually start from those rubber hoses.

There is no way around it.

First thing first, you are driving a car in an environment that is not suitable for it. The intention of Honda is never that their vehicles will be subjected to such abuses as seen on Nigeria roads.

Nigeria roads are made for Off-road reinforced vehicles. Oyibo people pay money to join Off-road clubs so that they can drive their
Off-road SUVs in roads that are similar to Nigeria roads.

Solution is to buy a vehicle with due consideration to the gully and potholes you will be subjecting the unlucky vehicle.

//
the cost of keeping an SUV on the road is on the high side, buying one is never the problem.

9ijaMan: I'll take you on just the above point alone and simply ignore the rest of your epistle. It's a fallacy to state that "majority of Shell staff come in through the SITP programme at entry level". Your postulate smacks of someone who can barely see beyond his nose. Shell is a world wide company which does not employ from Nigeria alone. I have tens of friends who went to SITP and were left in the lurch for graduates who got their MSc from schools abroad. Let me explain better so that I wont get misquoted again: While a few friends went to SITP and others went to schools abroad, Shell still preferred to employ those who schooled abroad to the SITP guys (the same guys Shell trained). This still happens to date. By the way this was not a one off occurrence, so please save yourself the trouble of trying to explain.

I've had the opportunity to work in different continents/countries and my experience working in the industry across the world remains the same. It's your choice if you decide to continue to live in self denial.

No where in my entire posts have I said a graduate from any school in Nigeria does not stand a chance to work in the O&G industry, how you came to such a funny conclusion tells me a lot more about you. I'm fully aware that lots of school cert leavers work in the industry, as such it'll be foolhardy for any one to state that only specific Unis' grads work in the industry.

This will certainly the last I'll respond to your post. Peace!
im glad im bringing you closer to reality with the last paragraph of your post.

about shell and SITP, shell has a quota annually or biannual on how many people to take from SITP so don't expect shell to take everyone that participated in the programme, haven't said that
you remember that shell in fulfillment of their local capacity human development use Sitp to achieve that an agreement shell has with the FG and their host communities.

the people that are not employed are assumed to have benefitted from the programme
you may have travelled all the continents in the world, that doesn't change the fact that you speak from an employee's point of view, so you can spare me the braggadoccio.

I speak from a stake holders point of view and that is why I refer to laws and guidelines governing the industry.
Education › Re: Chemical Engineering Vs Petroleum Engineering by jpphilips(m):
9ijaMan: The first criteria at getting a shot into an O&G firm is to finish first with a 2:1. At least a lot of interview doors will easily open for you. UniLag and UniBen have for long ranked among the top schools in Nigeria. UniPort obviously enjoys the advantage of location. I know some here feel schools don't matter, they are very much entitled to their opinion. My almost 15 years in the industry, shows clearly that Schools do really matter. Arguing that they don't matter amounts to self denial. In the UK and the US it's the same. In fact, it does happen too in the middle east.

Back to your questions, those three schools have an almost equal ranking within the industry in Nigeria, once again UniPort enjoys location advantage, hence it just about ranks equal with the other two heavy weights.

Since there will be no significant "school factor" advantage, it then boils down to individual performance, members of the interviewing panel and finally luck.

My response above is based on real life experience and not some "equal opportunity employer" hogwash.
As much as your opinion remains your entitlement, there are many facets of life you see through your individualistic observances and it can never hold as a yard stick or benchmark.

let us start with shell,
majority of Shell staff come in through the SITP programme at entry level, have you in your "life experience" heard where people pass SITP and shell tells them " sorry we cant take you because you didn't attend an old generation school"? or you are implying that Shell will deny you SITP admission because you didn't attend an old gen. uni.? these people are more interested in the stuff you are made of not some yeye Nigerian old generation school that hasn't made first 50 universities in the world.

let me take you to TOTAL sponsored IPS, which guarantees a reasonable number of TOTAL staff, have you ever heard in your "life experience" that someone came out tops in IPS and TOTAL says "sorry, we cant take you because your old generation university status didn't check out"? or, we reject your IPS application for same reason?
you sit somewhere and feed yourself falsehoods because you encountered some pocket scenarios, have you taken your time to investigate and trim the rough edges of this opinion of yours you hold so dear?

you are in the industry, by now you should have made calls to ascertain the veracity of your claims before dismissing others as mere "hog wash"

At entry level, it is a totally different ball game, unlike MSc level, personally i can not sponsor anybody for MSc in a Nigerian university or advise anybody to do it especially if the person has an eye for the upstream sector, the reason is based on what i have seen lately, from people i met and spoke with, most IOC's give preference to foreign Universities acquired MSc, that is a fact you can verify,

how they Rank foreign universities, why they do it, how and when it started is something that eludes me, but i can tell you categorically that MSc has levels as far as upstream operators are concerned, now if you look at job adverts on that, they state it there, " MSc from a recognized institution". meaning; there are institutions that are not recognized.

talking about personal observances, I once attended ESUT Alumni meeting in portharcourt at the behest of a friend (this friend is a TOTAL employee, joined at entry level), i was shocked how many of them are upstream, now, this is a state university which by your standard may likely not stand a chance, in fact, i wasn't surprised because i knew some of them during our NAN's days as students,

also, i have personally asked a lot of "company men" the school they attended and i have gotten answers from NAU, ESUT, Illorin, Lagos, Maiduguri, Ebonyi, Ibadan and a whole lot.

sometimes you really need to look beyond your "life experiences" before drawing some conclusions.

hope you wont argue, how many of others Vs how many of the old generation? this is where i will wrap it up, your opinion remains yours.

I reiterate again, at entry level, school hardly matters so long as your dept is accredited and you have the required grade, now it is 2.1 and 1st class and there is an opening for your course.

@9ijaMan

Chief,
I didn't know this happens to be an English tutoring class. I suppose each individual has got his own way of viewing issues and we need not resort to implied insults.
In any case, FPSOs are built mainly to store crude side by side while producing and do some bit of processing. You can drill and complete an offshore well without the need for an offshore platform nor the need for an FPSO. I was part of the team that drilled a good number of the wells in the fields you mentioned (Akpo - Total, Bonga - SnepCo, Erha - Exxon and some others). I repeat, and stand very much to be corrected, FPSOs are classified under the Midstream sector of the industry. The internet is awash with the right info if you care to learn more.
I like the part where you said you stand to be corrected on some of this issues, learn also to appreciate a few corrections you are given.
insisting that FPSO's don't produce or bring crude to the surface is something that is not worth discussing on my time.
if you admit it does produce, then kindly edit your former post where you said it is for storage only, you never can tell who might be reading it.

you claimed it only stores and i told you that it does produce and process, haven said that, as a professional driller, there are some statements that i will gladly ignore not to spite you but as someone who understands to a great extent what you do and where your operations end, it may elude wisdom to argue production with you so i rather give up at this verge.

you may be part of the team who drilled 44 wells in OML 130 does not necessarily mean you know anything about the FPSO there, so we can skip the "i was there" part.
just to let you know, the 44 wells you drilled at OML 130 is now doing 180,000boepd with storage capacity of 2mbbls.

this is your statement in question;

FPSOs are meant for storage, hence outside the upstream sector, but not necessarily in the downstream sector.
On the issue of old Unis, you are essentially saying the same thing I've said all along. Perhaps you should return back and read some of my previous posts.

The reason, I'm here is simply to share experience with the up-coming ones and not to engage in a shouting match with anyone
we are not saying the same thing about Old Uni's, i explained a phenomenon you have noticed but you misconstrued that phenomenon believing it has something to do with employment which i still insist it doesn't.
Any industry expert, consultant, Hro, etc can go to any school and lecture, there is no industry guideline on which school to visit and what to tell them, therefore it has no bearing with the chances of those schools on employment.
A HR manager in a standard company cannot hire people from his Alma matter alone, it is a short cut to kiss his job good bye.

please, no body is engaging you in any shouting match, whatever your intents are, you owe it to your audience to put things in the right perspective.

by the way, why do you start your response with "chief"?

9ijaMan: My brother you are certainly right. No HR department will publish in the dailies that they only recruit from certain Unis and not from others. It's during the selection process that those schools they consider not to be top notch are left out.

In my final year at school some of our lecturers specifically told us that some Oil majors (names withheld) wrote them that the standards of the graduates the school was churning out from the Faculty of Tech and the department of Geology were dropping. Of course na my set our lecturers take do experiment as we went through a very crazy final year in the school. How many Unis in Nigeria do you really think these companies will send such letters to?
Every HR, who knows his onion has a team with networks in all the universities in this country so thinking that letter is a big deal makes me laugh.
secondly, most standard companies do result and accreditation verification in schools so they already have a structure on the ground in those schools, unions like ASUU and their likes have programmes where they sell their institutions to companies and they interface with company HRs, during ASUU annual conferences take your time to note their special guests, i dont need to get personal or emotional about the subject but like i said previously, most obscure private universities may have a challenge, i formed this opinion on the Madonna vs law school saga.

beyond that i tell you that it doesn't matter at entry level.

As per the bold in your comment, FPSOs fall into the purview of a transition between the Upstream and Downstream sections, often referred to as midstream. Upstream essentially ends once the oil is on surface. Midstream takes over with surface storage and transport facilities. FPSOs are meant for storage, hence outside the upstream sector, but not necessarily in the downstream sector.

In layman terms, bringing crude from subsurface to surface: Upstream
At the surface, crude storage (with minimal processing to remove poisonous gasses) and raw crude transportation: Midstream
Crude processing and all refined output fall under Downstream.

I originally left out the midstream 'cos it's not as obvious as the other two.
I may have to correct you again though i appreciate some of your valid points,

FPSO means floating production storage offloading, from its name alone, you can deduce that it produces as much as it stores,
an example in Nigeria, is Bonga owned by shell, Akpo operated by Total. i give you specifics to enable you to verify and make corrections when i am out of line.

FSO, means floating storage offloading, it has only storage capacity examples are; exxon owned Yoho, Addax (now Sinopec) owned Knocka doom and Total owned Unity.

it is not correct to say that FPSO does not produce oil, i agree with your transition analogy but in reality they are upstream.

I do see you point on the choice of specialty. However, you should take into cognizance that no gas or hydro turbine can operate without an instrumentation and control engineer. These are the guys who'll (again in simple terms) regulate and control the flow of fuel (gas or water) to your turbines. You cannot set up a hydro or gas power plant without them else there'll be disasters all over the place.
You dont need to make the above comment if you read this part of my post

i am not saying that instrumentation will die off neither am i insinuating that they wont need instrumentation engineers, i am only pointing out that there is a frame work that will create another super industry in power.
I have already agreed to that position no need over emphasizing it

Lastly, the fact that Elec/Elec Engr'g is applicable in just about all of the sections of E&P makes the profession quite unique. You cannot be wrong if you chose to specialize in any of the fields. By the way, specialization often occur only in the final year, hence you will have the necessary basic in just about any of the specialties.

I sighted examples in the UK not to spite Nigerian schools but to buttress my point. I'll give you another example, a certain multinational O&G Coy (they are also present in Nigeria); would always employ engineering grads (BSc Holders) from Heriot-Watt and Imperial College as international staffs straight out of school, but always place graduates (again BSc Holders) from Uni-Aberdeen and Robert-Gordon as local staffs.
You may not want to admit it, across the world and across just about every profession, the School you attend has some significant level of influence on where & when you'll secure a decent paying job. Nigeria is certainly not left out.

It's not the fault of the prospective students, it's just the fact of life we all have to live with.
I don't see how this post is quintessential to the subject of discussion, i like issues to be treated concisely and succinctly.

An easy way to better understand my point is this: How come the multinationals don't organize job fairs in every University in Nigeria? How come there the HR departments of most of these oil giants consistently organize job fairs at specific schools in Nigeria on an annual basis?
Once you are able to get the answer to those questions you'll view the issue from my perspective.

As I stated earlier, it's not about which school, but each individual's capability. You may attend the best recognized Engineering School and still be a laggard.
The answer is simple, most old universities have their Alumni in these organization and by virtue of their age, they have produced people at the highest level who wield a reasonable level of influence in the organization.
By law, there is what is called local content capacity, so these big ogas recommend their Alma matter for R and D outsourcing and the organization releases community project development funding and counterpart research funding.

that is why you may see a Total or chevron classroom block or Lab in University of Ibadan but may not find it in ESUT, it is basically natural, but we are emphasizing on its influence as an employment criteria.

About the HRO's going to lecture in schools, well, there is no industry guidelines that stipulates that but under community development and social awareness, a HR, may decide to do that, but there is no industry guideline on which school to go to.

in well structured organizations the recruitment process is sacrosanct (citeris paribus), such influence is inconsequential, when you hear "equal opportunity employers" i hope you know what that means.
Earlier this year Total Invited 300 people for a scholarship (IFP France) aptitude test we didn't apply for.. on getting there we asked how me were selected and their HR manager told us that they went to their database and picked 2.1 and 1st class graduates from the top universities in Nigeria.. anyone that wrote that test can verify what i just said... No company will ever publish that in an advert, its more of an HR thing, and its not only happening in the oil sector
gentleman, i asked for a job advert for a trainee position not a scholarship, you can read my post again to respond accordingly, i appreciate your efforts.
if you still stand that it is a HR coded move then we can as well infer that your speculation cannot be verified.
