The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Chief of Air Staff (COAS) Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar confirmed that the NAF is expecting the delivery of three JF-17 multi-role fighters from Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) (defenceWeb). These will accompany six Mi-35N assault helicopters and three EMB-314 Super Tucano close air support (CAS) aircraft from Russia and Brazil, respectively. Notes & Comments: In September, during the Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) air show, the Government of Nigeria and PAC signed a memorandum-of-understanding (MoU) for the purchase of an undisclosed number of JF-17 lightweight multi-role fighters. It had seemed that the MoU would be a prelude to a final contract, but during the 2016 International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS), which took place in Karachi from 22 to 25 November, the term “MoU” was used to refer to inked contracts. With the NAF COAS essentially placing three JF-17s within the NAF’s procurement pipeline, it appears that the contract was signed at AAD. PAC will be supplying the JF-17s along with 10 MFI-395 Super Mushshak basic trainers, which the NAF ordered in June. In August, the NAF Chief also called upon Pakistan to provide training and capacity building support in various domains, such as the NAF’s special operations forces and flight training. In fact, PAF pilots will be joining the NAF’s 310 Flying School to help train future NAF pilots. http://quwa.org/2016/11/30/nigerian-air-force-chief-confirms-expected-jf-17-deliveries/

NAF R & D COMPETITION/EXHIBITION 2016 The Nigerian Air Force Research and Development Competition/Exhibition (NAF R& ) 2016 was rounded-up yesterday in Kaduna. The theme “Developing Civil-Military Research Programmes Towards Enhanced National Development” was adopted for the event to achieve two broad objectives. The first is to attract external collaboration by showcasing NAF R & D feats to the public. The second is to promote NAF R & D objectives through competition among individual personnel and NAF establishments. Participants at the two-day event include academic and research institutions having subsisting memorandum of understanding with the NAF. Two resource persons from the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex were also in attendance to present papers. The papers titled “The Role of Public and Private Sectors in Research and Development and its Impact on Defence Production: The Pakistan Experience” and “Strategies for Strengthening Civil Military Collaboration for Capacity Building in Research and Development in Nigeria” provided feasible model for emulation by the NAF in its drive to promote self-reliance through acquisition of indigenous technological capacity. At the end of the competition, three of the projects displayed at the exhibition were adjudged as most innovative by a team of independent assessors. The first project is the “Renovation of Mobile Control Tower” by 041 Communication Depot using local resources. The second innovative project is the “Design and Production of C-130 Tyre Removal Equipment” by 301 Heavy Airlift Group, while the design and production of “Aircraft Engine Compressor Washing Machine” by 531 Aircraft Maintenance Depot was adjudged the third most innovative project.

How $21m Presidential jet handed over to Air Force crashed in Makurdi Barely two months after the presidency handed over two aircraft in the Presidential fleet to the Nigerian Air Force, one of the ballistics defence capable aircraft has crashed at the Nigerian Air Force base, Makurdi, reports Thenewsguru.com Agusta AW 101, a medium-lift helicopter specially designed for military operations, got crashed less than a month after the Nigerian Air Force took delivery of it from the presidency. According to the credible online news medium, the Nigerian Air Force, P.R.O., Group Captain Dele Famuyiwa, denied the report that one of the aircraft crashed. Famuyiwa said that the aircraft was not involved in a crash but an incidence of little effect. “It was not a crash. I wouldn’t call it a crash because it just fell on the ground in Makurdi.” “I can say maybe it was an incident. You know accident is a higher degree of incidence. It was just an occurrence that did not take any life or equipment. Cars can malfunction and the same thing with any machine.” Famuyiwa said that the incidence was not in away a result of low training and skill of crew member as the same crew which managed the aircraft at the presidency still manage the aircraft at the air force base. However, pictures obtained by TheNewsGuru as well as the information gathered, revealed that the aircraft was in a damaged position. The Presidency had on October 10, 2016 handed over the two ballistics defence capable aircraft from the Presidential fleet to the Nigerian Air Force, with a view to reduce government’s expenditure. During the handover ceremony at the Presidential wing of the Abuja Airport, the Chief of Air Staff, AVM Abubakar who received the aircraft said one of the aircraft would be configured and deployed as ambulance while the second would be deployed as troop carrier, especially for operations against the Boko Haram sect in the North-eastern region of the country. Agusta AW101, which is a large armoured helicopter cost about $21million each (N10.5billion) making it 130% more expensive than the average aircraft of it class. |
