The sanctions were not against Nigeria in general or the Nigerian military. They were specifically against the Joint Task Force (JTF) in the North-East. They were imposed because of reports that JTF troops had detained people at random, they had detained people without trial for long periods of time, they had tortured people, etc. In fact, so many people had been detained that the detention facilities at Giwa Barracks were too full.
These and other related facts have always been in the open. People just refuse to pay attention. It's the twenty-first century and human rights is not a footnote.
Give him the kudos and criticize him when necessary.
Damn! He has done far too much with scarce resources.
I'll concede he's doing some good work, especially on the economy and in infrastructure. But there's also a lot he isn't doing, especially in the area of security and the health sector.
AlphaTaikun: For the benefit of readers who don't know these soecifics, I'll add more CLARITY to what @Freestuffs posted...
The parent ethnic group of Itsekiris is of Yoruba descent from Ijebu, Ilaje, and Ife. The other heritages migrated from Benin Kingdom through Prince Ginuwa who's father was Oba Olua of Benin and Ginuwa's mother was from Ile Ife (Ufe). She was the only one among Oba Olua's wives who was NOT born in Benin. Till date, the Itsekiri lineages of Ijebu descent who have been in that part of Delta State before Prince Ginuwa arrived in 1480 still maintain strong contacts with Ijebuland in Ogun State. Some migrants left Ugboland (Ilaje) in Ondo State more than 500 years ago to establish Ugborodo which is the oil and gas-rich area formerly known as Escravos.
It was the Ijebus (Itsekiris) led by Chief Lenuwa that Prince Ginuwa and 70 of his men who went on exile from Benin met at Ode Itsekiri in 1480. The Ijebus (Itsekiris) knew he was of royal lineage so he was welcomed in there community and hence made a ruler. Other Itsekiri communities have their own traditional rulers too known as Olarajas but the Olu is the paramount ruler among the Itsekiri though I read in past that some Itsekiri communities WANTED full independence.
The two Igala lineages in Itsekiriland migrated there from elsewhere centuries later and they would have felt comfortable settling down there because their spoken Igala language is Yoruboid just like Itsekiri. Even the Ooni of Ife and his royal representive affirmed the Igala presence in Itsekiriland just prior to the coronation of the current Olu (who was then the Omooba or Prince). However, Igala language is more mixed with Idoma in it. About 65% of Igala language is mutually intelligible with the rest of Yoruba language BUT Igala cannot be classified as a FULL dialect of Yoruba because Idoma language takes the rest of the percentage of words in Igala language. Igalas are ALSO made up of mixed ethnic ORIGINS as told by the late Attah Michael Ameh Oboni of Igalaland in a 2017 Sunday Punch newspaper interview which is still online. He talked about the migration along the River Benue of a group of people from Wukari (Taraba axis) who merged with a significant number of Yorubas and Edos near Idah, etc, to form Igala. There's NO doubt that Yorubas and Igalas are close or blood relatives ancestrally BUT that doesn't mean Igalas are Yoruba. Igala is simply of mixed ethnic heritage.
So, Itsekiri language is classified as a DISTINCT language but in reality, it's a dialect of Yoruba BECAUSE the parent ethnic group of Itsekiris is Yoruba with many Yoruba words in it like basket (apere) or the numbers one to ten for instance. The FIRST major oil wells in Itsekiriland are known as "Okan, Meji, Meta, Merin."
Yoruba, Edo, some Pidgin English and Portuguese words are found in Itsekiri language as of today according to linguists. It's the same with many Nigerian languages that are NOT monolithic but infused with some loan words from other languages.
Quelme: please you really need to brush up your thought and reasoning process.
Do well to read about 'operation paperclip' 'operation Northwoods' to name a few. Come back here and talk about morality. I know some of you breathe and live on Western propaganda anyway.
Read this, read that. Hopefully, you'll have something to say next time.
@bolded. Says every supporter of every mass-murdering dictator - from Stalin to Pol Pot to Assad to Putin. It's always Western propaganda. The kids were not kidnapped. The bombed maternity wards and schools and restaurants? All Western propaganda.
What boggles the mind each time is that you people can't comprehend that denouncing an evil dictator does not mean that one supports evil done any where else. Open a thread on staplers or paperclips or the slave trade and we will tackle the issue without whatabouting Russia or Putin (even thought we would be right since you swear by Putin). But, no. It's easier to be trying to shut down criticisms of Putin by mentioning Trumps and paperclips (which I don't support).
Quelme: stop confusing yourself Mister. Going by your logic, if your enemy is capturing more of your soldiers and returning them in their thousands in body bags, what does that says about the reality on ground?
On its own, it says nothing definitive. Other facts would have to be considered to have a full picture. If the Ukrainians do not have a similar policy of murdering prisoners, there'd be no similar number of bodies to return. Surely, that's obvious?
ganiyud2001: Check every time exchange take place is either 1000 Ukraine bodies to 38 or 35 Russian warriors not body who dey deceive who so Russian don't die abi den no see their body?
Ukrainians killed on the battlefield are not picked up by Russia and transported back to Moscow - they're too busy trying to stay alive and look for civilian homes to raid for food to do that. These bodies being returned are Ukrainian war prisoners that were later tortured and murdered inside Russia.

So this is your proof that USA killed 4 million for oil. Wonder if it was written by - Kaliningrad or WriteerNg ?
Quelme: what is stopping Ukraine from doing same please?
Looking at it again, you can't be Kaliningrad. You're evidently smarter. Mr Kaliningrad would have asked me "What's stopping the US from doing same please?" That one sleeps and wakes America and can't respond to any question about Putin or Russia without saying what about USA. I also doubt you'd name yourself after a chi#ld raypeest like MIkhail Kalinin.
I guess you're thinking - "This is war, how can anyone be talking morals? Is he serious at all?"
Well, that level of morality is why you have the current Russia, a mafia state ruled by a mafia boss, where the strong eats the weak. Enjoy. When it benefited Mr Prigozhin, I'm sure he liked it. Until it ate him.
But if some other societies choose to retain their basic humanity and won't torture and murder prisoners, nothing you can do about that.
There are consequences for electing useless leaders into office.
Yes, those who voted for candidate A knew and still voted for A, otherwise, no one would vote for APC as a party after the abysmal performance of Buhari, and his successor openly saying he would continue from where buhari stopped.
What were they expecting?
How will you know candidate B and C wouldn’t have performed better if they are not in office ?
Bolded is correct. But do you have an objective measure for what makes a useful or useless candidate in the context of a Nigerian election? We know that manifestoes and words said during a campaigns aren't objective enough - because politicians say nice things and fail all the time. "I will continue where Buhari stopped" was just campaign talk. Tinubu hasn't even continued in Buhari's trajectory - has has his own path so far. Even his style is different.
@red. You don't. At best, you go by their history –after all, apart from Atiku, the others had records of executive position for us to look at. Even Atiku had a civil service and VP record. People (those smart enough to do so) looked at these and came up with different interpretations. Since we're talking about security, what was Tinubu's record on security as governor? What was Obi record? Candidate A-C's campaigns thus resonated differently with different citizens.
The suggestion that Candidate A was manifestly bad, yet some voted him and Candidate C was clearly good yet they rejected him remains a nonstarter. No, we don't know that the other candidates would have performed any better on security.
WriteerNg: And the west are known for their logic?
Is it logical to kill 4 million people in the middle east for the sake of oil?
Who killed 4 million for oil? Where? (The bigger the lies, the better. They taught you well.) It's interesting you have a problem with that though, but not with Russia murdering Ukrainians to take their land minerals. In fact, you and your ilk have been jubilating here that Russia has taken the part of Ukraine that has minerals.
You guys always find a way to circle back to America. Because without it, you have nothing. Are nothing. You're called out on your poor reasoning skills and you leap to ask if the West (read America) is logical. Smh.
Lanretoye: I no believe these numbers joor, ojoro Dey there or where Ukraine is using knives,Russia is using bombs
Bodies returned don't prove anything overall. Soldiers killed on the battlefield are typically not the ones returned in this matter - unless Russia is in the business of picking up dead Ukrainians from the field. Russia tortures and murders Ukrainians that surrender – those are the bodies it returns.
2tpick: And you think it was by capturing bandits so they can give intel that the bandits and their leaders were killed? Judging by Ur logic, why not capture the leaders so they can give intel about their fellow leaders? You think banditry is like highway robbery where U arrest anini to give U information about the whereabouts of his gang members
floss: Now look at abia state and call the results for yourself… if Apc had won abia state, will they be enjoying what they’re enjoying today?
The problem is that people like you will have sense when your brothers and sisters are affected but for now, continue living in delusion and be speaking English
In your view - 1. Abia is the best-run state in Nigeria - because Labour Party, and not APC, is running it. 2. All states won by APC are badly run. 3. My brothers and sisters are not affected by the ongoing rot and misgovernance in Nigeria.
Hmm. I'm sure you'll have sense some day – although I can't guess when.
Alfred200825: No be this same Ekiti state celebrated giving APC 100% of their Votes?
You people need to stop this. The idea that people are suffering because they voted for Candidate A is flawed. There is no solid reason to believe that Candidate B or C would have handled the security situation better and that those who voted for Candidate A knew that and still voted for A.
spencekat: Ekiti that was known for peace is now having kidnapping challenges.
Fayemi was more interested in national politics than security while the likes of Akeredolu were carrying Amotekun on their head. Do they even have a strong Amotekun unit in Ekiti?
Chygozdegreat: What is happening in this country is beyond heartbreaking it is pure evil.
In Ajoni LCDA of Ekiti State, kidnappers reportedly demanded ransom just to release the corpse of a victim they allegedly raped to death. As if that was not wicked enough, the four men who went to deliver the ransom including cash, ice, beers, and other requested items were themselves kidnapped.
Now, the criminals are allegedly demanding more money and even female virgins in exchange for releasing the new captives.
Let that sink in.
This is no longer just kidnapping. This is barbarity. This is moral collapse. This is organized cruelty operating without fear.
Demanding ransom for a corpse shows how low these criminals have sunk. Kidnapping those who came to negotiate shows total lawlessness. Demanding female virgins is inhuman and demonic.
Where is the deterrence? Where is the intelligence gathering? Where is the overwhelming security response?
Ekiti has traditionally been seen as relatively calm compared to other regions. If this level of terror is taking root there, then nowhere is safe.
Government must act immediately:
• Deploy massive security operations in Ajoni and surrounding forests. • Track and dismantle these criminal networks. • Rescue the captives urgently. • Make public arrests and prosecutions to send a strong message.
This cannot be treated as just another headline.
When criminals begin to dictate terms like this, the state must respond with decisive force. If not, law-abiding citizens will continue to live in fear.
Nigeria cannot normalize this level of wickedness.
Enough is Enough
Hmm
In a serious country, this would make everyone rise up against these people. All the men in that community will rise up and go into the bush and will not return home until those kidnappers are found and beaten to death. The president will be so angry that he will tell his service chiefs not to sleep until this particular case is resolved an the kidnappers are either in handcuffs or dead.
casualobserver: The message is the same you want to now who is coming and who is not but it’s about tact, politeness, manners and diplomacy. Some people have not mingled in environments where manners are important and even the way
“Please respond” is a DEMAND despite prefixing it with a “please”. That’s bad etiquette and manners. Only tactless plebeians and unrefined people who do t know how to place their cutlery at a dinner table will make such a demand of their expected guests. Anyone with culture and manners knows you don’t do that.
In a formal invitation, you are requesting the pleasure of the company of the invitee. You are saying it is your pleasure to have him/her at your event. You don’t say it is a pleasure to have someone and then make demands by saying “please respond”. The diplomatic way to say so because you want to be able to plan is “respond if it pleases you”. Emphasis on “if it pleases you”. The invitee then knows that he is supposed to respond if it pleases him to attend.
The please is not a please to respond. The please is a reference to the invitee being pleased to attend. Big difference! That’s what they means when they say he didn’t R.S.V.P…..he didn’t indicate he will be attending.
Good one. I mean, this is a good explication of your position. I guess boomer can write... once he's done thinking we should all shut it once he's talking because of his age and supposed class.
casualobserver: The problem with you the new generation is you always try to redefine everything to compensate for your ignorance.
The meaning is “respond if you please”. You don’t take another man’s language and in your ignorance try to redefine what it means. To the French it means “if it pleases you”. If the English intended a different meaning they would type “please respond” in English. They kept it RSVP to keep the French meaning.
Nonsense!
.
Your post is genuinely funny. I won't lie. Every word of it. You clearly know nothing about how languages work though. "If the English intended a different..." That's your justification for insisting on a transliteration. Smh.
