Pets › Re: Do Cats Kill Snakes? by JuanDeDios: 3:55pm On Feb 03
Alusiizizi:
Cats are not immune to snake venom. That being said, cats do hunt and regularly kill highly venomous snakes. The reason why they can do this is that cats(house cats in particular) have incredibly quick reflexes(by some estimates, at least 20 times faster than human reflexes) and much faster that snakes can strike.

If you are interested in the GOAT of snake control you should go for a honey badger or a mongoose. Not only do they have incredibly fast reflexes(even faster than the house cat) but they are immune to virtually all known snake venom.
Can you keep a mongoose or badger at home?

AndroBlaze:
In his old age, Falana has decided to become a Gen Z by force and prefers to "trend" than tell the truth.... a real shame for those of us who use to support and look up to this man.

For serious human beings, everywhere in the civilised world (including US and UK) a court martial can prescribe the maximum punishment, which usually can be appealed in more senior courts.

That's what the old man needed to say instead of looking to trend.
You should read him well. He doesn't say court martials aren't a thing or can't pass sentences. He says treason is a regular criminal offence (not a military offence) and should be tried by regular courts.

Go to Oligie, Ịgbanke or even Ekpon and hear tales of the marginalisation they go through as a minority in Edo State.

I randomly heard that Abudu have not had light in over ten years and I seriously wondered if it's state policy or the usual incompetence.

Orhiowon is benefiting nothing in edo state. Tthe local government is lagging behind and no government presents.
Interesting. I doubt there's anyone that doesn't feel marginalized in Edo though. It's underresourced and has not had stellar governance since '99, so everywhere outside Benin City has a very bad road network and decrepit primary schools. Unless your village has been lucky to produce the governor and got some of its roads done (e.g., Iyamho).

Good for the Igbankes though. Wahala for other communities who don't have where to run to.

I do not see any connection between a bottle of gin containing snake and antivenom.
Well there's a chance of ingesting the venom in small, safe doses (rendered non-fatal by the ethanol) – which can then offer some protection. If vaccines can work like that, maybe snake venom can, who knows.

Dogalmighty17:
Providing CPR on a snake bite victim? This only further pushes the venom deeper into the body.
The first question any competent medical professional will ask is, what kind of snake bit her? This will quickly narrow down and pinpoint the most effective anti-venom for that particular kind of snake.

The shameful disgrace of Nigeria is that the whole federal capital territory doesn't have a centre equipped with anti-venom that any hospital across Abuja can call and have it available in minutes.

Abuja is expanding. It is inevitable that this expansion will reach areas that certain wildlife have long regarded as home. These displaced animals, snakes inclusive, start entering residential areas. The case of the Airforce personnel who got bitten by a snake that crawled through her soak-away into her toilet, is fresh in memory. Her house was built in a freshly claimed area.

Yet just a 45 minute drive from Abuja, along the Abuja-Keffi expressway, is a snake farm owned by a retired Chief of Army staff. The most evil CAS this country has ever had. Snake venom is steadily harvested from that farm and shipped abroad.
Well, they said they administered a polyvalent antivenom. That's meant to work for all snakes, right?

This is making headlines because it happened in Abuja to probably a known person, never heard of her but people seems to know her. Do you know the number of people living in rural areas that die from snake bites in this country especially in the North, you will be shocked at the number. This is why I am shaking my head at all this comments about visiting native doctors for snake bites, if native doctors work the number of Nigerians dying from snake bites in rural areas will not be this high.
Seriously? You don't know that traditional healers in our villages make and use antivenoms?

BlakKluKluxKlan:
That is black mamba.
A deadly, fierce and very bold snake that hates to be cornered.

I've had nearly fatal close touches with those monsters twice.

First time in 1991 at Ijesha express Lagos.
I used to do some modest 'Akuro' farming in the swamp area
I cleared the bush waiting for it to dry for morning. I was turning the grass when a small one bursted out timing. I gave a chase while looking for a weapon to use.
As she got close to another hip of grass, she suddenly turned 180 degrees and chased me. It was so abrupt I almost ran into it.
We repeated this cycle 2 times back and forth before I managed to kill it with a stick.
It was a close call.

The 2nd one was a far closer call somewhere in Ikorodu area.
It was my new site by swampy forest.
I built a 2-floor cage for my chickens.
A fowl on eggs was attacked by a very big black cobra about 5 feet long. The fowl's cry
drew my attention to the cage. She was writhing in pains on the ground. I looked into the cage, saw the eggs but no snake not knowing that the bastard had disappeared under the cage. While I was clearing falling leaves from the top of the cage, she came up to swallow the eggs and saw me. I didn't know nothing !
Well, she saw me as a rival and decided to deal with me first. And my left side of my ribcage was facing her
There's a deadly, focused and determined posture they normally adopt just before the kill. At that very second, perhaps by some divine instinct, I looked inside as she made tostrike ! I shouted and jumped back at the same time. I fell backwards. I think it was my shout that stopped her in the track. I was just saved by the whiskers.
She escaped but I set a trap for her with one of the eggs with a fish hook.
She came back the 3rd day and got trapped. By some funny hunch, I decided to repeat the trap. The 3rd day around noon, I heard a struggling moaning sound. Getting there I saw another one of exactly the same size
It was the female.
Wow!

Now, you're talking. Abuja ought to have at least one hospital specialised in treating snake bites. Most NIgerian cities should have this and the information should be made widely available to the public such that anyone bitten by a snake rushes there.

Anti Snake venom is applied based on the type of snake
Because it is made from venom
What works for cobras won't work for mambas

It us not feasible to stock all kinds of venom unless it is a regular occurrence

Most doctors never see a case of snake bite in their careers
This is what people fail to realise. If you go to hospitals located in places where snakes bites are very common in Taraba and co, you will find antivenom - for the snake species common in those areas. But in most places you don't find them because snake bites are not common. If you go to our villages, you will also find native healers with antivenoms for the snakes found there.

Nigerians will just be posting just to make fame.
Let's understand this. UK is a temperate country locating in the temperate region and temperate snakes are nonvenomous; meaning that there are not poisonous. Nigeria is a tropical country locating in the tropics. Biogeographically, equatorial region is a home to most deadliest species of animals (reptiles inclusive). In UK, out of 50 snakes, the chance of seeing one that is poisonous in the midst of them is less than 1. Comparing snake bites in UK and Nigeria is a bias argument that lacks credibility.Netizens are not fools. We came from different field of studies. Stop blaming the government. Fumigate your environment and stay safe. May her soul rest in peace.
I was about to say something like this. Only one or two snake species in the UK are venomous. And your chances of encountering them aren't as high as those of meeting snakes in Nigeria. Even in Nigeria, we have antivenoms, but for efficiency, they're concentrated in hospitals located where snakes bites are frequent - like Taraba and co.

That is why local herbalist treat snake, dog and other venomous bites very well. She must have relied on conventional medicine to treat the snake bite. But hospitals don't have anti venom,

When a dog bite my daughter I took her to health centre they directed us to a local herbalist who treated her.

She relied on oyibo medicine forgetting her root,

May her soul rest in peace
What if there was no snake bite herbalist near her? Back in my village, there was a only one. Where I live in the city now, I don't know of any.

Ebinpawo1:
Using VAT remittance to determine economic contribution be very controversial.

Understand the principles behind VAT deductions and the Administration of VAT will help one with better understanding.

No doubt that Lagos houses the head office for most of the multi national companies and banks and other national big entities. But the products and services of those companies are consumed nationwide, while the VAT is collected and remitted centrally at the head office, just for convenient administrative sake.

So relying only on VAT contribution per region or state could be misleading. Rather a step should be taken further to breakdown the rate of consumption or propensity to consume by each region/state enhance understanding.
Honest question: Is VAT being calculated based on head office of collection or based on place of consumption?

All these are happening and some hate filled folks will still keep lying that the economy is not improving. We must never allow them to derail this trajectory of growth and prosperity that we are experiencing. This progress must continue. Kudos to Mr. President and his team for the great job they are doing.

This guy was/is just a Colonel in the army, but was the money machine bankrolling a military mission in which his superior officers were involved.
You have to ask "how" did he make the money?

Its all boils down to the fact that he was posted to the Niger Delta at a point as a military commander of one of the lucrative anti this and anti that military operations. They basically collude with foreign oil thieves to loot the country dry once posted over there.
Now they're starting to make more money than they need and sponsoring coups and insurgencies have become fashionable..

This wasn't a coup to radically change things. This was a coup by some utterly corrupt officers desperate to re-imposse northern hegemonic dominance of Nigerias politics..

My bro, if you read through the story very well, you'd understand their plan was to assassinate some political figures and detain the service chiefs. If they had succeeded, the army won't be after then because the heads are already being detained. They will install a new government and nothing will happen. Coup plotters knows they will get sanctions if they eventually get into government house. You won't have an idea of what a coup means sir. This is social media and I won't want to talk too much.
I think the fact you're ignoring is that TIMES change. Even if they succeed (which I doubt), governing is a different matter. In Buhari's time, there was no consensus against coup. In fact, many people wanted it. And it was unheard of to protest against the military. No Internet or social media or human rights. Then you WILL have armed groups. Sunday Igboho and co just need an excuse like this. Ipob are waiting in the wings. Iswap will colonise the NE. They won't have been able to hold Nigeria together, much less govern it for one day. Of course, the intellectual class everywhere (SE, SW, SS, NC, NW, NE) would have rejected the coup.

Also, detaining the service chiefs won't have ruled out the possibility of certain divisions and brigades rejecting the coup and moving against the coupists. Because this isn't the '80s. This even happened in the Niger - the coup was rejected by some generals. But they later decided they did not want the country plunged into a civil war, so they accepted it. I doubt they would have said that if the politicians had been murdered - because you started a civil war already.

Anyway, it would have been bloody interesting to watch.

So you think anyone an reenact Nzeogwu or Rawlings or Samuel Doe today. Dey play.

Back then, you kill politicians, and nobody said anything. Even the coups in W Africa that they did not kill people, look at the backlash.

You won’t be able to govern because you will be crippled with sanctions, as most countries won’t do business with you. Look at Myanmar. (Those idiots did not even kill the politicians o.) You think Russia can save anyone's economy?

The internal backlash would also have been impossible to handle. The SW would have erupted and the June 12 protests would be small compared to this one. (Again, look at the conflicts in Myanmar. Those idiots can’t even govern.)

In any case, this coup won’t have succeeded, because you need a level of consensus for a coup to succeed and not be DoA. After the idiots kill the politicians, the Army would have moved against them and you’d have another Dimka situation in your hand. Dimka killed the HoS and some state administrators but still got what he deserved.
