Boris Johnson is first world leader to announce infection

In a tweet earlier today, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed that he had tested positive for coronavirus. Mr Johnson said he was experiencing "mild symptoms" and would be leading the country from home while self-isolating.

While he's the first major world leader to announce a positive test, the disease has already impacted the daily lives of several others.

Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel is self-isolating after a doctor who gave her a vaccination tested positive. Canada's Justin Trudeau is also self-isolating with his wife Sophie after she tested positive following a trip to London.

Other leaders who have been tested but say their results have come back negative include the presidents of Brazil, the US and the Philippines. Concerns were raised after several Brazilian officials tested positive after returning from a trip with Jair Bolsonaro to meet Donald Trump. Both leaders have hit out at critics and refused to self-isolate, despite WHO recommendations for anyone with possible exposure to do so.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic was the first national leader to send a message of support for Boris Johnson on Twitter.

On the news that the British prime minister had tested positive, Mr Vucic said: "Get well soon and keep fighting."

European Council president Charles Michel also wrote on Twitter: "Europe wishes you a speedy recovery."
Meanwhile, the head of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told Mr Johnson: "Please take good care."

He went on: "Your leadership and commitment to beating the coronavirus are key to saving lives.”

Breakdown | SA now has 402 positive Covid-19 cases, all provinces affected

The Health Ministry on Monday confirmed the number of coronavirus cases in the country surged to 402, up 128 from the previous day. All nine SA provinces now have confirmed cases of Covid-19.

South Africa now has 402 confirmed cases of Covid-19 - an increase of 128 since Sunday's announcement. That is a spike of 47%.

The Northern Cape has its first confirmed cases, which means that all nine provinces are now dealing with the global pandemic.


President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation on Monday night amid increased speculation that South Africa will go into lockdown.

"We will thereafter engage the public to give further details and explanations on the results, including the significant rise, the ongoing testing processes, each province’s progress on contact tracing efforts," Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said in a statement.

The Presidency said there no cause for concern about Ramaphosa's health. This after African Christian Democratic Party leader Rev Kenneth Meshoe has been tested for the novel coronavirus.

The hardest-hit province is Gauteng, with 207 cases, followed by the Western Cape, with 100 cases.

The Eastern Cape has two cases; the Free State 13; KwaZulu-Natal 60; Limpopo four; Mpumalanga nine; North West four; the Northern Cape two; while the location of one case is listed as unknown.

Of these, 32 patients are 61 years or older, while nine are 10 years old or younger.

The Health Ministry on Monday confirmed the number of coronavirus cases in the country surged to 402, up 128 from the previous day. All nine SA provinces now have confirmed cases of Covid-19.

The reaction to the spread of the coronavirus locally has been severe.
Schools have been closed to prevent the spread among children.

US jails are to let out inmates as cases of coronavirus infections are being reported in prisons.
New York City is releasing "vulnerable" prisoners, the mayor said on Wednesday, days after Los Angeles and Cleveland freed hundreds of inmates.
Prison reform advocates say those in jail are at higher risk of catching and passing on Covid-19.
There have been more than 9,400 cases of Covid-19 and 152 deaths in the US so far, according to estimates.
Globally there are some 220,000 confirmed cases and over 8,800 deaths.
Rikers Island outbreak
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Wednesday that city officials will this week identify individuals for release, including people who were arrested for minor crimes and those most vulnerable to infection due to underlying health problems.
His announcement came hours after a guard and a prisoner tested positive for coronavirus at Rikers Island prison, where disgraced former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, 68, is a high-profile inmate.
Weinstein will be moved to a different state prison, an official said on Wednesday.
Other New York prisons, such as Sing Sing, have had inmates test positive for coronavirus and one employee for the state's corrections department has died from it.

What have other US jurisdictions done?
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department reduced it's inmate population by 600 in the last two weeks, officials said on Tuesday.
"Our population within our jails is a vulnerable population just by who they are, where they are located, so we're protecting that population from potential exposure," Los Angeles Sheriff Alex Villanueva told reporters earlier this week.
The LA County jail system is the largest prison system in the world with an average population of around 22,000 prisoners.
Mr Villaneuva disclosed that arrests in the county are also down, from an average of 300 per weekend to only 60 in mid-March.
Cuyahoga County, Ohio, where the city of Cleveland is located, has also released hundreds of prisoners due to coronavirus concerns.
Judges held emergency hearings through the weekend to work out plea deals and other agreements to allow prisoners to be released early or without serving time.
Several states from New York to California are now banning in-person visitors. A ban on visits led to a deadly prison riot in Italy last week.
Federal agencies will postpone most arrests and deportations during the coronavirus crisis.

Reform campaigners say prisoners face unique risks, due to a lack of hygiene in overcrowded cells and hallways.
Handcuffed people cannot cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze, sinks often lack soap and hand sanitiser is considered contraband due to its alcohol content.
Iran has already released 85,000 people, including political prisoners, in an effort to combat the pandemic.
The US locks up more of its citizens per capita than any other country, with an estimated 2.3 million people behind bars in federal, state and local prisons.

The number of deaths now stands at 3,405, which is more than in China where the virus originated last year.
There have been 3,245 reported deaths in China, but there have been questions over the reliability of its data.
A lockdown imposed on 12 March in Italy has been extended beyond the original 25 March end date. Nearly all Italians have been told to stay at home.
Despite these measures, the number of new cases and deaths has continued to spiral.

China confirmed it had no new domestic cases on Wednesday for the first time since the outbreak began, a major milestone.

What's the latest in Italy?
Italy shut down most businesses and banned public gatherings nationwide on 12 March as it tried to halt the spread of the virus.

What about the rest of Europe?

France began its lockdown on Tuesday morning. It requires citizens who are in public places to carry official paperwork stating why they are not at home or face a fine.
Interior Minister Christophe Castaner told Europe 1 radio on Thursday that the lockdown might be extended beyond the originally stated 15 days.
He said 4,095 fines had been handed out to transgressors and 70,000 control checks made since Wednesday morning. The fine is €135 ($150; £123).

The White House has acknowledged the nation does not have enough coronavirus test kits as cases of the disease ticked upwards on both US coasts.
Vice-President Mike Pence said the Trump administration would not be able to meet its objective of delivering one million testing kits this week.
Congress meanwhile moved with unusual speed to approve a bumper emergency aid package to combat the outbreak.
Globally, authorities have confirmed more than 92,000 cases of the virus.
The vast majority - more than 80,000 - are in China, where the virus originated. Worldwide, more than 3,000 people have died.
The US death toll from the coronavirus climbed to 12 on Thursday, with all but one of the victims in the north-western US state of Washington.
There are now more than 200 cases of Covid-19 in 20 states.
A cruise ship, the Grand Princess, remains off the California coast while passengers are tested for the virus.
Where is it spreading?
In Washington, officials in the Seattle area announced 20 new cases of the virus, bringing the total in that state to 70, according to its health department.
Nine of the US dead so far were from the same nursing home in suburban Seattle, which is now being investigated by authorities to see if it followed infection-prevention guidelines.
Some major Seattle-area businesses, including Microsoft and Amazon, have shut down some operations or urged employees to work from home.

Speaking in Washington state in the evening, Mr Pence said: "We still have a ways to go to ensure that tests are available."
But he said that by the end of next week the US government's diagnostic supplier would distribute kits across the country that would enable 1.2 million Americans to be tested for coronavirus.

On Thursday, a Coast Guard helicopter lowered test kits on to the 951ft (290m) Grand Princess vessel by rope.
Princess Cruise Lines said fewer than 100 people aboard had been identified for testing. Results are expected by Friday.
"The ship will not come on shore until we appropriately assess the passengers," California Governor Gavin Newsom said.
A man who sailed on the Grand Princess last month died of the coronavirus on Wednesday. The 71-year-old from the Sacramento area had underlying health conditions, said officials.
Two other passengers from that voyage are in hospital with the virus in northern California, officials said.
