Romance / Father In Yemen Seeks Onemillion Facebook 'likes' Asdowry by jude4us(m): 5:51pm On Dec 17, 2013 |
A father in Yemen has asked, not for money, but for one million Facebook "likes" as dowry for his daughter's hand in marriage. Yemen is a very traditional society, but one marriage there has been given a very modern twist. Instead of asking his daughter's husband-to-be for a dowry payment, Salem Ayash, a poet from the city of Taiz, has asked for one million Facebook likes. That's a lot in a country of just 25 million , where internet use is limited. "It's the first time we've heard of something like this," says Bashraheel Bashraheel, a journalist with Yemen's Al- Ayyam newspaper. The story has made big waves on social media there, he says, with countless bloggers writing urging people to support the page so the couple can get married. The page was set up on Sunday and has 30,000 likes so far. "No-one in Yemen can afford dowries anymore," says Ayash, explaining why he's asking for a digital dowry - rather than gold or money. The fact that many young men cannot afford dowries, and so cannot get married, is a hot topic in Yemen, says Bashraheel - with numerous attempts over the past few years to set a maximum legal amount. Neighbours often club together to help pay a dowry - which is set by the father of the bride - and mass marriages are becoming more popular as a way of making it more affordable. Those commenting on Salem Ayash's Facebook page seem divided on whether it's a good idea or not. Many have thanked him for raising the issue of dowry payments, but others have questioned his motivations. "All you want is to use your daughter to seek fame," writes one - noting that the Facebook likes are for his own personal page, rather than that of his daughter or her husband-to-be. Ayash told the BBC that he wants to see evidence his future son-in-law is making an effort to raise the one million Facebook likes - but he won't be rigid. "If I see that he's worked hard, I'm willing to be flexible to see them happily married." http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-trending-25414584? ocid=socialflow_twitter_bbcworld grin PEOPLE, WHAT DO YOU THINK??

Politics / Senator Yerima Divorces 17year Old Egyptian Wife, Marries Another 15yr Old. by jude4us(m): 4:25pm On Dec 17, 2013 |
Three years after marrying a 14 year old Egyptian girl named Marian, which was widely protested in Nigeria, former Zamfara state governor and serving senator of the federal republic of Nigeria, Sen. Ahmed Yerima, has reportedly divorced her to marry a new wife, City People reports. According to the magazine, Yerima and four men, said to be members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly were in Egypt a few weeks ago for the wedding fathia of a new bride said to be 15 years old. Marian who is now 17 and a mother of one, is believed to be the daughter of the former governor’s driver whenever he visits Egypt. The reason he divorced her is to enable him take a new wife as he’s not allowed more than four wives. The Senator is alleged to have married and divorced a few women in the last few years but has never changed his first three wives, only the fourth ones. Sen. Ahmed Yerima this year was strongly against the deletion of the section of the 1999 constitution which pegged the official marriage age in Nigeria as 18 years, saying it was anti-Islam. http://9jaolofofo.com.ng/senator-yerima-divorces-17year-old-egyptian-wife-marries-another-15yr-old/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

So here’s the photo, which quickly stole the thunder of the Mandela's Memorial service (maybe, technically). The “selfie” of three world leaders who, during South Africa’s farewell to Nelson Mandela, were messing about like kids instead of behaving with the mournful gravitas one might expect. President Barack Obama taking a selfie with UK Prime Minister David Cameron and Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning Schmidt. Seated was Michelle O. Did they really come for a memorial service? How do you aggregate their conduct? What would you say if our Oga Jonathan were to do that?

ghananotnaija: Nigerians, go and laugh today. But it will be Ghana who will have the final laugh, when the Black Stars emerge from group stage with Germany, while the Super Chickens fall to both Bosnia and Iran, talkless of Argentina. Then you will have no choice but to acknowledge that Ghana was, is, and always will be the No.1 team in Africa. Technically, I refused to comment when i saw your sobriquet. There's no point explaining the way to a blind man with your gesticulations. |

Sports / “it Was A Deserved Defeat, My Players Were Tired” – Mourinho [PHOTO] by jude4us(m): 7:55am On Nov 27, 2013 |
Jose Mourinho has conceded that Chelsea deserved to lose against Basel in their Champions League tie on Tuesday. Mohamed Salah clinched the only goal of the match, three minutes from time as the Swiss champions went into second place behind the Premier League team. Chelsea failed too register a shot on target in a weak performance, but Mourinho says the players were tired and he should have made more changes after the West Ham game. “It was a deserved defeat, but because of other results we qualified. That is the only positive thing, now we have to get a result at home [Steaua] be first,” the former Real Madrid coach told Sky Sports. “I didn’t like it from the first minute, when there was a defensive mistake immediately. The team only had a little bit of stability and control in the second half. “The team was tired, they paid the price of the international 15 days. The arrival, the match that followed was crucial against West Ham, where the team played very well in an intense game, but today we paid the price because the players were tired. “I’m not so sad with them, because I understand. The team was not fresh and maybe I should have made more changes, but there was a temptation to keep the same team because they played so well (at West Ham).”Jose Mourinho admitted Basel deserved their Champions League win over Chelsea, adding that he was relieved to qualify from Group F. http://dailypost.com.ng/2013/11/27/deserved-defeat-players-tired-mourinho-speaks-loss-basel/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=deserved-defeat-players-tired-mourinho-speaks-loss-basel&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

The Abubakar Baraje-led faction of the New Peoples Democratic Party, nPDP, has finally merged with the All Progressives Congress, APC. This was made known at the end of a meeting held at the Kano Governors Lodge in Abuja on Tuesday. A statement signed by the Interim Chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande, said the party welcomes the defectors with open arms. Mr. Baraje read the terse communique to journalists at about 11.46 a.m. The merger means that the APC now has its 11 governors joining the seven decamped governors who were former members of the New PDP; bringing the total of the party governors to 18. The statement which was signed by Baraje reads in parts: “In the interest of our country and in order to rescue Nigeria, we the new PDP have agreed to merge and work with the APC.” In attendance at the meeting were APC leaders, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Muhammed Buhari, the governors of Niger, Rivers, Kano and Kwara states, Babangida Aliyu, Rotimi Amaechi, Rabiu Kwakwaso, and Abdulfatah Ahmed. Religion / Mysterious River Appears In Enugu Community [PHOTOS] by jude4us(m): 7:37am On Nov 27, 2013 |
Before now, very little was known about Nachi, a community in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State. However, all that has changed; the history of the community has being re-shaped. All it took to change the face of Nachi is mysterious healing water, already named “Orimiri Jordan”, (River Jordan). DailyPost visited this community on Tuesday and reports that it has indeed become a Pilgrimage Centre, playing host to people from all parts of Nigeria. Countless testimonies abound as Nigerians struggle to dip themselves into the River. How it all Began Enquiries by DailyPost showed that it all started on the 11th day of November 2013. According to community sources, a Fulani herdsman ran to the community and announced how water covered the place just few minutes after he passed. “He told us that he passed that place with his herd of cattle and soon after, heard a strange noise; when he turned back, he discovered that a big stream has appeared at the same place he just passed with his cattle. At that point, he ran to Garki and informed his relatives, who also came there and discovered that the water had healing power. From that point, the news spread to the community”, a source disclosed. Origin of the River Although there appears to be some elements of controversies surrounding the healing power of the River, the community is not divided on its origin. The traditional ruler of Nachi community, His Royal Highness, Igwe F.O Onuigbo, Obi II of Nachi, told DailyPost at his palace that the mystery River was older than him. Onuigbo, who spoke through his Lolo, because of his ill health, said “I used to pass through that area to attend school at Inyi-Achi in Oji River, in the early 40s. In those days, there is no water there, the only thing you see there is white sand. But once you get there and you are thirsty, all you need to do is to scratch the surface of the land and ask if for water, water will full your hand immediately if you are an upright person, but if you are evil, no water will come out. That has been the situation”. Another octogenarian, Chief Festus Ude told our correspondent that “later, we noticed that after some years, the water will form a stream there and would disappear in few weeks. If such happens, we will be fetching water there. However, women who are menstruating and evil people don’t go there. We never heard about healing power of the River until this recent appearance of the River”. The 80-year-old man continued that “the last time it appeared was in 1992, and at that time, it just formed a small stream, which later disappeared. It has never been as large as this. This is all I know, we have never known about its healing power, this is the first time we are hearing about healing, I don’t whether it is true, we equally heard it like you”. Brisk Businesses For commercial motorcycle operators, popularly called “Okada”, photographers and petty traders, it is a life-time opportunity that should not be allowed to slip by. Right at the junction leading to the location of the “Jordan River”, the visitor is presented with a scene of a busy motor park, where hawkers, food vendors, transporters and okada riders battle for customers. On the other side of the road, cans of various sizes are displayed for those who came empty handed. From that point, you park your vehicle, mount on Okada and the journey begins. It would remind one of those routes passed by youth corps members during endurance trek organize at the peak of orientation camp. Owing to the bad nature of the road, the motorcycles swerves from one portion to the other, trying to cheat the road. They find it less troublesome, because according to one of them, they had become used to the terrain, since they ply the road not less than 30 times per day. Mr. Daniel, the Okada operator, who conveyed DailyPost correspondent to the River, disclosed that he abandoned his vulcanizing job to benefit from the new business. According to him, “I have a vulcanizing shop at the Nachi Market, but when this new business came, I had to close the shop temporarily so that I can also make money here. I hardly make N1000 a day there in my shop, but since I joined this Okada transport to the Enugu Jordan River, I make no less than N10, 000 every day. One of my friends called my attention to it, and I will forever be grateful to him”. The okada operators charge their passengers fares ranging from N500 to N1000 depending on their bargaining power. On getting to the River, another business scene welcomes you. Here, apart from those hawking snacks, photographers are not left out. This presents the place as not just a miracle centre, but a tourist centre. While some of the visitors dip themselves or swim in the River, the photographers take shots, get the pictures ready immediately at the cost of N200 depending on the number of exposures. One of the photographers told DailyPost that they make between N20, 000 to N40, 000 every day. “You can see that some people come for fun, not just in search of miracle but to see the mysterious River. So when such people come, they request for shots and it has really provided us with good business here. Healing Powers Although no instant miracle was recorded throughout the one-hour duration our correspondent spent at the River, sources disclosed that many visitors had testified to all forms of miracles after visiting the place. People of all ages, with all forms of ailments are being assisted by their relatives and friends to dip themselves into the River. A can seller at the entrance to the River told DailyPost that “my house help was suffering from enlarged scrotum; we were trying to raise money to go to University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital before a friend told me about this place. We brought the boy here and by the time we went home, he was fully healed, that was how I started selling empty cans here”. Another visitor, a civil servant, who identified himself as James told our correspondent that he came after neighbours told him about the healing power of the water. “I heard about people who had difficulties in walking but they got healed after visiting this place; I also heard of people who regained their sight after visiting this place; I am just coming out from the River and I believed that I am free of any form of sickness and challenges”. Meanwhile, the crowd of anxious Nigerians seeking for miraculous solutions to their problems has continued to surge into the River. Even security agents are not left behind as some of them were seen either with their water cans or aiding their loved ones into the River. However, the water is expected to also dry up any time in the same mysterious way as it came. http://dailypost.com.ng/2013/11/27/mysterious-river-appears-enugu-community-photos/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=mysterious-river-appears-enugu-community-photos&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
