EducationWhat A Phd Is And What It Is Not by Julivas(op): 8:27pm On Feb 10, 2018
WHAT A PHD IS AND WHAT IT IS NOT

After having completed a PhD degree myself, and having supervised, co-supervised and examined a number of PhD students over the years, I would like to offer some humble advice and pointers to those aspiring to pursue a PhD degree themselves. I find that many students misunderstood the purpose of getting a PhD degree and the commitments and sacrifices that it calls for.

A PhD is the highest academic and research degree from a university. I have seen both remarkable successes and disappointing failures amongst students pursuing this academic accolade. It takes more than just brain power to complete a PhD.

A degree by research is very different from a degree by coursework. A course degree whether at the undergraduate or masters level is heavily structured. A student just have to be disciplined and rigorous in following this predetermined structure regimentally, without much creativity required from him or her. Of course, creativity is demanded from the student in completing assignments and projects but the demand is nothing close to what is required for a PhD degree.

The most important prerequisites for pursuing a successful PhD program are passion, inquisitiveness, creativity, discipline, persistence, perseverance and meticulousness (or attention to detail). I did not mention intelligence not because it is not important, but because it is less important than the other attributes I mentioned. At least, it is in my book. Others may feel differently.

Of those many attributes, I consider passion the most important. Some students start out enthusiastically but loses steam halfway through or towards the end. They lack passion or the love of knowledge. Ever heard of the saying, "when the going gets tough, the tough gets going?" Success in a PhD is simply that. The harder it becomes, the harder you will strive. Sometimes, you do not see the light at the end of the tunnel but you still keep looking for it because you know it is there. When you love what you do, failure is not an option.

Some people do PhD for the wrong reasons. Some take up postgraduate because they could not secure a job after their first or second degree. Some do it because the jobs they have taken up require them to acquire a PhD, for e.g. an academic or a research post. These cannot be the sole reason for pursuing a PhD. You cannot force yourself to do a PhD. You must want to do it badly enough. You cannot force yourself to love something; you must love or want something bad enough to force yourself to get it.

The PhD is an academic journey. There will be failures but mainly successes along your way. You may encounter some foes but mainly friends in the same boat as yourself. It always help to be in a group of students to share both your setbacks and achievements. Working alone in a silo is the worst you can do to yourself. There are certain things you want to discuss with your fellow students that you cannot discuss with your supervisor; matters that are either academic or personal.

Your supervisor is your mentor, guide and consultant, not your teacher. He cannot teach you your PhD knowledge, you have to teach yourself through his guidance and wisdom. He is more your friend than he is your master. He does not dictate to you what you must do, he merely points you in the right direction. At the end of your PhD journey, you would have been more knowledgeable on the subject of your research than your supervisor. I have heard of students not being able to complete their PhD because they could not get along or see eye to eye with their supervisor. This is the worst scenario that can happen to you. If you do not have a supervisor you can work with, you will not get your PhD no matter how good you are or how hard you work. So, choose your supervisor well, not just the university you want to do your PhD in. Just a few months back, I met a doctoral graduate who told me that to be supervised by this one professor carries more prestige among his peers in the working world.

A PhD degree needs sacrifices, especially when you are a family person; a wife, mother, husband or dad. Family is always important and should always be your priority. However, you and your family members must be willing to make sacrifices that are necessary. There can be no gain without pain. That is why when you finally get your PhD degree, your family members can even be happier and more proud of you than you yourself, because it is as much their accomplishment as it is yours. Their sacrifices must be duly appreciated.

So what does it mean when you have a Dr. before your name? Does it mean that you are an expert on a certain subject matter? Hardly so, I think. It means that you are both a seeker as well as a generator of knowledge. It means that you have enriched the world and added on to the vast body of knowledge through your PhD contribution. The world has become a slightly better place from the knowledge that you have contributed through your PhD thesis and publications. The world now knows more on a subject than before you completed your PhD. Your work get referred and cited by other researchers in your field, as they absorb your new knowledge to generate new knowledge of their own.

Your PhD is an end that should be justified by its means. The research methodology, the analysis and the interpretation should justify the conclusion. The new knowledge must have been tested and challenged by your peers and rigorously defended by you. It is an accomplishment unequal by any other feat. Once you have obtained a well-deserved PhD degree, you become your own teacher as self-teaching becomes common practice. You are always curious and tends to read a lot, not just on your subject matter but on everything. You will find doing new things, exploring new frontiers and taking up new challenges more scintillating. In other words, it will change your life and your outlooks forever.

I hope I have inspired some of you to pursue a PhD degree if what you read here is what you really want from a PhD. On the other hand, I hope I have also discouraged others who have a misconception of what a PhD degree entails, so that you will not go down the road of failure. A PhD is not for everyone.

You may share this post if you think it would help people you know in deciding whether pursuing a PhD degree is the right path for them to take.

*AN ADDRESS PRESENTED BY THE CATHOLIC BISHOPS’ CONFERENCE OF NIGERIA (CBCN) ON THE OCCASION OF A COURTESY CALL ON HIS EXCELLENCY MOHAMMADU BUHARI, PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA, THURSDAY, 8 FEBRUARY 2018*

Your Excellency,

*Preamble*

We, the representatives of the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria, bring you our cordial greetings and blessings. We desired this meeting, in order to continue the dialogue we initiated with you even before your election as President. We therefore thank you for granting us this audience, which affords us the opportunity to share with you, once again, our thoughts and concerns on some issues affecting our dear country, Nigeria.

First, we thank God for bringing you back to us healthier and stronger after a period of ill health. We hope and pray that you continue to make progress on the way to full recovery, in order to be able to face the enormous challenges emanating from your exalted office.

Your Excellency, needless to say that, as President, you are the Father of our dear country Nigeria. It is therefore pertinent that as loyal citizens as well as informed members of the society we come to you from time to time to express not only our willing cooperation with the government in working for the progress of our country, but also to share with you the feelings of the multitude of Nigerians at this moment. We work with the people at the grassroots and, therefore, have first-hand information about what they are going through.

There is no doubt that when you came into office, you had an enormous amount of the goodwill of Nigerians, since many saw you as a person of integrity who would be able to bring sanity into a system that was nearly crippled by endemic corruption. Nearly three years later, however, one has the feeling that this good will is being fast depleted by some glaring failures of government which we have the moral duty to bring to your notice, else we would be failing in our duty as spiritual fathers and leaders.

*Our Concerns*

Your Excellency, there is too much suffering in the country: poverty, hunger, joblessness, insecurity, violence, fear… the list is endless. Our beloved country appears to be under siege. Many negative forces seem to be keeping a stranglehold on the population, especially the weaker and defenseless ones. There is a feeling of hopelessness across the country. Our youths are restive and many of them have taken to hard drugs, cultism and other forms of violent crime, while many have become victims of human trafficking. The Nation is nervous.

Just as we seem to be gradually emerging from the dark tunnel of an economic recession that caused untold hardship to families and individuals, violent attacks by unscrupulous persons, among whom are terrorists masquerading as herdsmen, have led to a near civil war situation in many parts of the country. We are saddened that repeatedly innocent citizens in different communities across the nation are brutally attacked and their sources of livelihood mindlessly destroyed. Property, worth billions of Naira, including places of worship, schools, hospitals and business enterprises are torched and turned to ashes. We are still more saddened by the recent massacre of unarmed citizens by these terrorists in some communities in Benue, Adamawa, Kaduna and Taraba States which has caused national shock, grief and outcry. What is even more distressful is that the government, whose responsibility it is to protect the life and property of every citizen seems either incapable or unwilling to do this. The silence of the federal government in the wake of these horrifying attacks is, to say the least, shocking. There is a feeling of helplessness among the people and the danger that some people may begin to take laws into their hands.

We therefore earnestly urge the government to take very seriously its primary responsibility of protecting the lives and property of its citizens and ensure that such mindless killings do not reoccur. Herdsmen may be under pressure to save their livestock and economy but this is never to be done at the expense of other people’s lives and means of livelihood. We would like to add our voice to those of other well-meaning Nigerians who insist that a better alternative to open grazing should be sought rather than introducing “cattle colonies” in the country. While thinking of how best to help cattle owners establish ranches, government should equally have plans to help the other farmers whose produce is essential for our survival as a nation.

In a similar vein, daredevil kidnappers, who at present are having a field day, with a feeling of invincibility, must be made to understand that there is a government in this country. Government should invest more in equipping our Police Force with modern high-tech devices that will help them track down and arrest these criminals and make them face the wrath of the law.

The Federal Character Principle is enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria:“_The government of the Federation or any of its agencies and the conduct of its affairs shall be carried out in such a manner as to reflect the federal character of Nigeria and the need to promote national unity and also to command national loyalty, thereby ensuring that there shall be no predominance of persons from a few states or from a few ethnic or other sectional groups in that government or in any of its agencies_” (Section 14, Sub-section 3-4). Disregard for this Principle in some federal government appointments as well as perceptible imbalance in the distribution of federal amenities has created the loss of a sense of belonging in many parts of the country, hence the constant cries of marginalization, agitation for secession and calls for restructuring.

*Conclusion and Assurance of Prayers*

Our Church has always complemented the efforts of government in such areas as providing quality education and primary health care services to our people. We shall continue to support the effort of the government in nation-building. As the voice of the voiceless, we shall therfore continue to highlight the plight of our people and play our prophetic role of sensitizing the government, thus promoting national unity and cohesion. As we encourage you to spare no effort to build a new Nigeria, we reassure you of our support and prayers for your success.  On the long run,Government under your watch must do all in its power through good policies to restore confidence that government is for all and sundry. Our collective efforts must be seen in the desire to return to the fine principles of democracy such as true federalism, negotiation and consensus building as means of achieving a more equitable distribution of the resources of our country.

Thank you, Your Excellency, for the audience and may God bless you.

It's possible
I built a 12 room self contain around a school in 2016 and didn't spend up to that amount.( 6.8m, land purchase and survey fee inclusive)
So your 7.5m should do taking into consideration land money is already out of it.

I also took time to record each and everything bought and paid for, from the land purchase to the very last thing done.
Wow...
Can you please share the floor plan

dear dont let anyone decieve you or any contractor lied to you. 7.5million will build a suitable 4bedroom which I personally have done under my own supervision.

a self contain will have a sitting room a room 2 toilets 1 kitchen and 7.5million will struggle to finish 3 of that no matter how you manage the money..coz you will do the tiles .exclude pop ...even if its pvc. .roofing will take upto 1.8m for the 3 self con if built separately.blocks .plastering. home equipments wiring borehole and other expenses.its east to raise a building but finishing is more difficult and costly than you think.save enough money or start small small
I think the one you are saying is one bedroom flat, not self con. Self con is just a room with kitchen and toilet/bathroom.

Hello guys,
I need your honest advice/contribution.
I purchased a land close to my school in the south for a few years now and would love to develop it.
Building a student hostel is my preference. But I live abroad and have a job. I really do not have anyone to help me through it.
I have decided to take one full month leave from work and get things done. But i need some advice from engineers in the house.
At what level do you think 7.5 million can go should i start the project.
Ideal i would prefer a 10-12 self contain bungalow.
If possible, would it be alright to finish at least 6 part of self contain and rent it out thereby using the money to complete others.
This is a new year and money in the bank is paining me. I need to start making good use of money than storing it in the bank.
I am a lady in her 20's.

Please matured advice only.
Thank you.
Hmmm, good investment decision.
7.5 million for 10 self con...... that is 750k per one.
Yes, it is possible depending on the type of materials you want to use, type of finishes you want to apply and most importantly the prudence of the contractor.
Note the price of materials are going up almost daily so do it as soon as possible and do make sure you get a trust worthy person in - charge.

i want to turn to God. I realised that my life have been hell without Him. Back then, when i was still a child of God things were going pretty well for me. At least, i was in good terms with my fellow humans. All my friends love me, i did things and i won. These days, pride have taken over. I easily loose friends than i make them. I have lost a lot of things. Pride has cost me a lot. And i want to change. For how long should i continue to suffer? I want to live my life happily, i want to love people and make them love me back. Most importantly, i want to make Heaven. I know that Heaven is real, and i dont want to go to hell. The worst part is that when i try to change, something holds me back. I dont know but i see that God wants to take hold of me, but then the devil does not want to let go of me. Sometimes, i feel like let me just die and vanish from the face of Earth. My life is miserable and my relationship with people is chattered. I want to give my life to Christ, but i dont know how to go about it. Please help me.
I'm so sorry for just responding now. Thanks to those that have responded to you. I thank God for making you conscious of eternity with God. As they rightly said, you can begin to meditate and observing the scriptures especially from the new testament, you will see how much love HE has for you no matter your past sir. Good gospel music is also a nice idea, then I pray the to be determined in your walk with God because satan will surely come, but never give him a chance. HOLINESS(THE ULTIMATE FLIGHT'S PASSPORT)BY BRO GBILE AKANNII am to connect a flight to Manchester from an airport but while waiting for my flight to be called I came across a brother who I knew back in Nigeria who was too glad to see me for he has been under my ministration many times. We discussed nearly everything until our flight was called. The brother got ready his papers and passport but as to my own passport I could not locate it. I searched frantically without success. After sometime the brother had to leave me and commend me to the grace of God to help me find my passport. I ran to the counter, explained what happened to them and asked that they should delay the flight a little so that I can locate my passport because of the crucial preaching appointment i have but they declined.I watched my friend board the flight and I watched the plane go.Despite the fact that my friend was my disciple, he boarded the flight but I could not. My friend as well as some others in the airport has lots of respect for me because they recognise me as a great man of God yet there is little they could do to help my situation. I have so many other and necessary papers intact but without the passport the authorities would not allow me board the flight. The theme being considered at the convention of Methodist church Nigeria rounding up today 19-01-18 in which Bro Gbile Akanni is the main speaker is taken from Heb.12:14- Make every effort to live in peacewith all men and to be holy, without holiness no one will see the Lord. The passport issue came about while Bro. Gbile was explaining the words 'whithout which'.The passport to entering heaven is Holiness. Your status, wealth, position, degree or what have you does not count here. Some pastors would be left behind while people that came to know God through themwould enter the kingdom of God. Some people are majoring in the minor while leaving the most important unattended to. You can score allAs in all other subjects but with F9 in English and Mathematics, no Nigerian University will admit you.The airport authorities has a standard which will not be compromised for anybody. Once you are not qualified you are disqualified. You still have opportunity now to get ready for the ultimate flight, once you die or the trumpet sounds, no matter how frantic your efforts are, you will still have to face the consequence of your negligence. I wonder what else would be important to an international traveller other than the passport. Your passport to heaven is Holiness you better do all you can now to locate it if you have misplaced it else you regret ever coming to the world. On the long run, I was able to locate the passport where I dropped it when packing other things. The booking lady rebuked me sharply for being so careless and I think I deserve it. Anyway, I asked them to help me check if there would soon be another flight going my route and I was lucky there is. But what if the one I missed was the last flight or if the next flight has been fully booked. After the incidence, Bro Gbile learnt to treasure his passport dearly and to hold it. This is an extract from the sermon of Bro Gbile Akanni at 2018convention held at Ikotekpene. Had I known would not be your portion at the end in Jesus name. Please locate your passport now and treasure it dearly. Your flight may be announced any moment.

CrimeRegional Militias, Youths Prepare For Battle Against Herdsmen by Julivas(op): 7:23pm On Jan 21, 2018
REGIONAL MILITIAS, YOUTHS PREPARE FOR BATTLE AGAINST HERDSMENSome youth groups in the Middle Belt and southern part of Nigeria have vowed to resist the incursion of the dreaded Fulani herdsmen into their regions. They have therefore urged the various state governors in the North-Central, South-West, South-East and the South-South geopolitical zones to offer necessary support to their members. The militia groups, whose leaders spoke with SUNDAY PUNCH on Friday, included Agbekoya Farmers Association, Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra and the Indigenous Peopleof Biafra.Others are the National Council of Tiv Youths, Middle Belt Youth Counciland the Middle Belt Forum (Youth Wing). We’re well prepared to defend Yoruba land –AgbekoyaThe National Publicity Secretary of the Agbekoya Farmers Association, Chief Olatunji Bandele, said the group was prepared to defend the South-West against herdsmen’s attacks.Bandele stated, “The Agbekoya Farmers Association of Nigeria, foundedin 1938, has now established the Agbekoya Vigilante Group, a security outfit, to secure our farmlands and crops.“The Fulani herdsmen should steer clear of the South-West if their mission is to come and kill innocent citizens.“Agbekoya is now ready to defend the South-West, especially our farmers, their families, farmlands and crops.”Armed herdsmen are terrorists—MASSOBAlso, MASSOB leader, Uchenna Madu, said his group had perfected arrangements to resist attempts by the northern elite to use armed herdsmen to secure a second term for President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.Madu said, “MASSOB and other pro-Biafra groups represent the genuineinterest of the Ndigbo which can never be denied. The Igbo leaders are not afraid to support or collaborate with Biafra agitating groups for the betterment of Igbo land and her people.”Also, MASSOB’s Director of Information, who spoke on behalf of the group’s founder, Ralph Uwazuruike, said the group would insist on a freestate of Biafra to enable the Igbo to deal with the criminal invasion by herdsmen wielding AK-47 rifles, arrows, machetes and other dangerous weapons.“They have attacked almost all parts of the country with impunity. They are not hiding; they boast and walk freely on the streets without the Federal Government doing anything.”In the same vein, IPOB, through its spokesman, Emma Powerful, told one of our correspondents that it had issued notices to herdsmen to vacate Igbo land since their mission was to cause mayhem. We have signed our death warrants – Middle Belt YouthsIn the same vein, the President of the National Council of Tiv Youths, Dr.John Akperashi, said his members had resolved to shed their blood to resist further attacks by the dreaded herdsmen. He said, “The battle line has been drawn. PoliticsHerdsmen Killings: Stakeholders Reject Osinbajo Panel by Julivas(op): 2:34pm On Jan 21, 2018
The North-East zonal Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Alhaji Mafindi Danburam, has said the Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo-led committee on killings by herdsmen would not produce the desired result with the inclusion of Ishaku and Samuel Ortom of Benue. He told SUNDAY PUNCH on Saturday that the two governors, who have promulgated “military decrees” in their states, would make attempt to influence other members of the committee. He said the ban on open grazing was anti-Fulani. Danburam said, “The committee would not produce the desired result with the inclusion of Governors Darius Ishaku and Samuel Ortom of Benue. “The two governors, who have promulgated military decrees in their states, will make attempt to influence other members of the committee. The ban on open grazing is anti-Fulani. “I want to tell you that I am disappointed completely in this present administration because this crisis has been happening for the past three years and the Federal Government did nothing to stop it.” Also the Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, dismissed theOsinbajo panel as diversionary and unnecessary. It said the committee demonstrated the lack of leadership in the country. Spokesperson for the group, Yinka Odumakin, said the President should have deployed the necessary security apparatus to apprehend the perpetrators of the killings and put an end to the bloodshed instead of setting up “a nonsensical committee.” He said, “The President has set up a committee to go and look for what is not lost; Some people are killing others like chickens, the laws are there, the President is keeping quiet and you are now setting up an Osinbajo committee, to go and do what? “It is like sending the IG to Benue, to go and do what? The committee is diversionary, it is unnecessary and it shows the absence of leadership in the country. The committee is nonsensical,” he stated. In his submissions, the National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Prince Uche Achi-Okpaga, accused the President of double standards. He said instead of setting up a committee to stop herdsmen killings, the government should have deployed the military to check the activities of the cattle breeders. Speaking with one of our correspondents in Enugu, the Ohanaeze spokesman noted that the Federal Government did not set up any committee before deploying the army against the Indigenous People of Biafra. Rather than setting up a committee, Achi-Okpaga said, “Buhari should have ordered the army to put a stop to the murderous activities of the herdsmen.” Similarly, the Taraba State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Yusufu Akirikwen, expressed doubt over the sincerity of the Federal Governmentin ending the crisis. “Notwithstanding that my principal is a member, that committee is a deceit; because the Federal Government knows what to do, but is not willing to do it,” he said. Factional President of the Ijaw Youth Council, Mr. Eric Omare, urged the committee not to work only towards dousing the tension in Benue and other areas affected by herdsmen attacks, but to also go beyond political considerations in ensuring that the nation moved forward. However, the General Secretary of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Bala Ngelzerma, urged the committee to be fair. Ngelzerma, in an interview with SUNDAY PUNCH, said the committee should focus on the root cause of the crisis and not just the symptoms. He said, “We said some days ago that the government should arrest all those found to have killed people in Benue and Taraba. Now that a committee has been set up, our expectation is that justice will be done.” -Punch

I will simplify my comments on this for the benefit of the humble. I must emphasize that the core of the gospels are spiritual, it is not secular.
I can agree with you that some Atheists are birthed when the promises in the Gospels dont materialize/manifest in their churches, thereby creating doubts. If Atheists were as honest and smart as you say they are, they would have quickly found, that the real solution for their doubts are not embedded in what you say it could be. Their solution will not be found in the "study of the evolution of all religions." Nor will it be found in comparing the original doctrines with so-called twisted lies.

The core of the gospels are deeply spiritual not secular. The Gospels can never be examined the way the Atheists examine it and expect to extract truth. This is totally impossible.

Your following comment is loaded with serious contradictions when you say, "I noticed that these atheists are actually honest with themselves and are smart to pick out these fallacies...but in the course of identifying these fallacies, they get annoyed and throw out the baby (truth) with the bathing water (lies)."

Experience proves that an honest, smart person will never throw the baby out with the bath water. That is the actions of a madman. Your comments has actually served to highlight the serious mental deficiencies of the Atheists mind and its inherent dangers to humanity, especially when they get into positions of power.
I am certain that many esteemed Nairalanders can explain this much better such as; Sonofthunder, Butterflylion, Vaxx, Bennyann, Bloodofthelamb,

The core of the gospels are deeply spiritual therefore it is impossible for an Atheist/Godhater to enter into that hallowed ground to gather verified truth.
You are right sir.
Christianity EtcRe: Is The Gospel In The Old Testament? by Julivas(m): 10:11pm On Jan 18, 2018
jiggaz:
Thank you for the mention bro... Now lemme answer the questions...

1) Yes the Gospel was in the old testament but it was veiled or kinda hidden, e.g When God told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, it was symbolizing how Christ will become our sacrificial lamb. Even sef, the Gospel was planned from the foundation of the world by our Heavenly Father together with Christ and the Holy Spirit. They saw from the beginning that man will fell. But they hid the Gospel until it was time to unveil it. That was the wisdom of Our Father!!

2) Yes people were saved in the old testament but they did not have eternal security like the Church ( Grace Period). Their works was needed too because they were under the Law and Christ has not died for their sins yet. Am talking about the Jews cos i don't really know about Gentiles in the old testament.

3) I think its both Law and Faith combined. Christ have not come and died for the sins of the world, remember?
I support this totally .

PoliticsPendulum By Dele Momodu by Julivas(op): 5:28pm On Jan 16, 2018
Pendulum By Dele Momodu; dele.momodu@thisdaylive.com Fellow Nigerians, thanks for the deluge of messages and phone calls last week after reading my memo to our dear President. I doubt if any article of mine ever generated such amazing interest from the rich and poor, educated and not so educated, alike. The closest to it would be the letter I wrote to our wonderful First Lady of yore, Dame Patient Jonathan at the peak of PDP rascality. For the sake of those still wondering why I wrote so passionately, and objectively, in my last column, let me say it loud and clear, that memo was an apologia to Nigerians. I had promised to write whenever I’m finally convinced that the APC government has irredeemably flopped like its predecessor PDP. I wish to emphasise that as much as I wish that a miracle can still happen in the next 12 months or so to come before the general election, I’m sorry to inform you that the signs are ominous. The lackadaisical attitude of APC, and in particular, President Buhari, has become unbearably palpable. They are looking like a Party and President on a suicide mission. They keep making mistakes after mistakes, and blunders after blunders. There was no better time to rescue itself from the kamikaze slide than during the mass funeral in Benue State two days ago. What should have been a special occasion for national rebirth and reformation was frittered away by the sheer arrogance of the ruling class. What should have been a day of national mourning was treated with such recalcitrance, and possible disdain. It is difficult not to see or feel that this government is a victim of some witchcraft and hypnotism. A government that rode into power on the supersonic jet of goodwill of the people is barely struggling to survive a swim in the gutter of ill-wind. It is more like it has embarked on a predictable slide down a giant abyss, as by its very demeanour and offhanded posture it insults and belittles those very same people that it relied upon for the much vaunted change it promised but has found difficult to deliver. In many, albeit different ways, we seem to have gone back to the arrant impunity of the Jonathan era. What exactly is wrong? Anyway. Pardon my digression, but the recent devastating and sad events in Benue State in which some herdsmen went berserk and attacked innocent indigenes of that State deserves condemnation of these terrorists by every Nigerian. I join others in offering my condolences to the families of all those who died in the unfortunate incidents. May the souls of the departed rest in peace. I commiserate with those injured and affected by the dastardly rampage. The time has come for President Buhari to act swiftly and decisively to curb this menace which has the potential to tear our country apart, despite the strenuous and vociferous protestations by the President about our unity being non-negotiable. Now to the matter at hand. A few people suggested last week that I was working for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, probably because of our recent meeting and also partly because he is the main candidate who has declared his interest, and that is why I wrote that memo to President Muhammadu Buhari. Let me say with all the emphasis at my command that I’m not working for anybody. I’m too independent to be used by anybody. The time has not come for me to jump into the game. I have my eyes on a few bright guys of Nigeria but what if they don’t get the ticket? And what happens if we have Buhari and Atiku as frontrunners in the next election? You may wish to know who between the two I will support. When I’m faced with such option, I will not shy away from declaring my position publicly. I’m not the kind that would hide my support. When Chief Olu Falae contested against Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, I supported Falae, as a matter of personal principle. He did not have cash to throw around and I even spent my meagre income to travel to Vienna to try and persuade that cerebral gentleman, of blessed memories, Dr Rilwan Lukman, who was the kingpin at OPEC headquarters in Austria, to run as Falae’s Vice-President. Though the arrangement fell through, I still returned home to support Falae. Only one person can win at a time. I never supported any PDP candidate in their sixteen years in power though I admired a few of their action-packed Governors. The last election that catapulted them out of power finally convinced me that behaviourally and ideologically, the difference between APC and PDP was between six and half dozen. There was no way APC would have emerged triumphantly without the epic support of the PDP dissenters. Anyone can say whatever they like today, I was an eye-witness, and active participant, in the making of that spellbinding, suspense movie. Amaechi, Saraki, Kwankwaso, Atiku, Wamako, Tambuwal, and others from the PDP made so much difference when they added their weight to those of the godfathers from the other Parties that formed the APC conglomerate. My decision to support APC, though never a member of the Party till this day, was primarily to get rid of the PDP fiefdom that was stylishly manifesting and bourgeoning into a veritable catastrophe for the country. Two, to stop the profligacy that had characterised the government of the day. I have met some key actors who said President Goodluck Jonathan was never a corrupt man personally but he lacked the strong will to challenge his thieving acolytes. That was the major weakness that guillotined his regime. Most reluctantly for some of us, Buhari became an option and a stopgap. Anyone who followed my support for President Buhari would have seen how I regularly referred to him as the Mandela option. I didn’t expect him to become a permanent feature. I’ve always believed that anyone above the age of 65 is a high-risk option, and I said this about Buhari during our Presidential race in 2011. However, since the last Presidential election was a straight fight between Jonathan and Buhari, the choice was totally limited. Many of those who supported Buhari also considered his anti-corruption credentials though, in retrospect, I believe we downplayed his anti-democratic records and proclivity. I still have no doubt that he’s one of the most honest Nigerians alive today, although like Jonathan he seems to be surrounded by people in respect of who that is difficult to say. It is likely that age, as well as the reality and practicality of how he attained power, have jointly humbled and mellowed his almost sacramental vows against corruption. It would be tantamount to monumental hypocrisy and superlative ingratitude to bite the fingers that fed one in our hour of acute need. It has become critically obvious that what has confronted Buhari in power was never what he anticipated or bargained for. This is why I advised him last week to bow out with whatever honour he has left, instead of squandering everything away. If he stubbornly contests the next election, he would be forced to compromise and capitulate on a number of things. He would have no choice than to play the erstwhile PDP card, by opening the vaults of the Central Bank of Nigeria to political vultures who are not known to be patient or merciful in respect of primordial interests. That was my honest and candid appeal to Baba out of genuine concern for his future and legacy. Let us, at least, continue to dream that we have one selfless and incorruptible leader in Nigeria. The truth, is that my preference would be for younger candidates in both major Parties and my criteria would be as follows. The candidate must be well educated. Nigeria has produced more than enough graduates from every part of the country for us to be continuously and endlessly led by near-illiterates. The candidate should have managed people and resources, whether in a private or public capacity or both. The candidate is expected to be seriously exposed to modern trends. Ability to communicate well would be appreciated since he would have to interact with world leaders. I want a Nigerian candidate and not a sectional leader. Anyone who cannot feel at home in any part of Nigeria is not fit to lead our otherwise great nation. Anyone still relying on zoning, quota and Federal character to become anything in Nigeria is certainly an enemy of progress. We must consider the brightest people from every part. There are enough people in Nigeria who fit this bill. We can’t simply say that we cannot find one such person. Our search should in reality be moving on to finding the very best of the best. Once we find our Leader and his deputy then we should not care too much about engaging others, including foreigners, who are the best at infrastructure and facility building of the type we so desire and need. Dubai is not solely managed by Emirati citizens. The UK allows foreigners to manage critical sectors, including the economy, a good example being the Bank of England (their Central Bank) headed by a Canadian, Mark Joseph Carney. I will not totally disqualify exceptional elders who have distinguished themselves under most of my above criteria lest I fall victim of the same bigotry I’ve been preaching against. Some elders are more reasonable, less corrupt, more business-savvy, more exposed to international standards, more efficient, less cantankerous, more focussed, and more visionary than our so-called youths. We have since come full cycle by trying sinners and saints but we have not yet succeeded in having great and big thinkers. We cannot, and must not, continue to delude ourselves that we can find saints from anywhere to lead us. What we need, as a matter of urgency and desperation are competent performers from wherever we can seek and find them. By now, we should be tired of exchanging the baton of backwardness and mediocrity every four years. Like joke, like joke, nothing spectacular has happened to us for decades now while smaller countries across Africa are marching forward confidently and admirably. Our own leaders seem to be very comfortable in our squalid, desolate and unsavoury conditions. No qualms. No urgency. No new ideas to copy, borrow or buy. We are permanently stagnant and sanguine about our perpetual state of inertia. The next election should be a turning point. We can no longer afford to play politics of ethnicity, money and religion. I reiterate that we must search frantically, extensively and productively for the best. The world would leave us very far behind at the rate we are going. We are already desperately behind and trying to play catch up. We do not need to lose more ground. I’m appealing to everyone who loves Nigeria to free Nigeria from the bondage of oppression, suppression, ethnic jingoism, religious fanaticism, terrorism, Satanism, and all forms of retrogression. 2019 cannot, and should not, be business as usual. It should be our year of true liberation and independence. Yes. The time has come to assemble our proven performers in a government of national unity. Nigeria cannot be handed over, or handled anymore by professional politicians who have no other business or job they do, and who merely see their stay in government as an opportunity for self-aggrandisement, and unashamed and unabashed looting of our collective wealth. Rather we want Nigerian leaders who are committed and passionate about their country. Our chosen leaders must be willing to sacrifice their all to ensure and enhance the comfort of their fellow citizens by providing the simple basics of life. Nigerians have never been a demanding people. We merely want education for our children, decent wages for our hard labour, good health care, electricity, water, food, security and above all peace. For now, every single one of these matters evade and elude us notwithstanding our vote for change! The President and his Vice President must provide evidence of what they have done and accomplished in their lives. Merit, productivity, passion and vison must be our watchword. Irrelevant considerations, like religion, ethnicity or even gender, have no place in this equation. May Nigeria be victorious.
