approves release of compensation to affected traders Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has approved the immediate construction of the Fruits and Vegetables Market in D/Line, which was gutted by fire recently. The governor also approved the release of compensation to traders who were affected by the inferno at the market. In an interview on Friday, Special Adviser to the Rivers State Governor on Special Projects, Dax George Kerley stated that the contractors will be mobilised to site on Tuesday next week, while actual construction will start on Wednesday , October 24, 2018. The new Fruit and Vegetables Market will have four buildings (one storey each) and eight buildings (bungalow), designed to promote commercial activities. Other facilities in the market include: 232 Open Stalls, 72 Lock Up Shops, Toilet Blocks, car park, drainage, internal roads, a warehouse, generator, transformer, perimeter fence and a security house. Governor Wike approved the release of N400,000 (Four Hundred Thousand Naira) compensation to each of the 213 Traders operating inside the market. The governor also approved the release of N300,000 (Three Hundred Thousand Naira) each to 200 other traders operating around the market. In furtherance of his efforts to keep Rivers State safe for residents and businesses within it, Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike today assented to 3 monumental security related bills in Government House, Port Harcourt.

The respective bills are the Rivers State Secret Cult and Similar Activities Prohibition Amendment No. 6, the Rivers State Kidnap Prohibition Law and the Rivers State Neigbourhood Safety Corp Bill.

Governor Wike while assenting to the bills decried the efforts of sons of the State in frustrating measures, on political grounds, to keep Rivers State safe and secure. According to the Governor anyone who loves Rivers State won’t oppose measures taken to keep Rivers State safe.

Speaking further, Governor Wike said his earlier reluctance in signing death warrants was now a thing of the past as he is now more determined to sign death warrants on the exhaustion of judicial processes.

“I will sign death warrants without looking back. Enough is enough. The world must know that we are serious about the issue of security,” he said.

In his brief remark, the leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Martin Amaewhule said the Rivers State Secret Cult and Similar Activities Prohibition Amendment No. 6 stipulates stiffer penalties for crimes relating to secret cultism. The new law provides death penalty for cultists whose victims die as a result of their activities, while life imprisonment has now been stipulated for membership of secret cults in Rivers State.

In addition, the Rivers State Kidnap Prohibition Law now provides death sentence for kidnappers in Rivers State. Property owners whose properties are used for kidnap activities would lose them while corporate organizations that are used to facilitate kidnapping would pay a fine of 50 million naira and their property used in facilitating kidnapping confiscated.

Hon. Amaewhule noted that contrary to insinuations in certain quarters, the Rivers State Neighbourhood Safety Corp Law aims to complement the efforts of security agencies in combating crime and maintaining peace in Rivers State.

Speaking after the Governor’s assent to the respective laws, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ibani Ikuinyi Owaji-Ibani commended the Governor for his courages steps in keeping Rivers State safe and upgrading her infrastructure.

On his part, Governor Wike thanked the members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for working together, irrespective of their bipartisan affiliations, at ensuring that the new laws saw the light of day. The Governor said by their action they had written their names in gold in the annals of Rivers State for helping to keep the State secure and safe for all.
