The often over looked, but very crucial role the media, Western Main Stream media played in this conflict should not be swept under the carpet.
The American media, British media, European media all used their channels to push for war and military escalation. None of them wanted to tow the path of diplomacy or de-escalation.
It's really unfortunate. Should we now be sorry that the Ukrainians are getting bombed when the media pushed for this conflict.
Where was the empathy in Iraq, Afghanistan or Ukraine in 2014, even in Nigeria the Western media wanted the EndSars protest to lead to an overthrow of government. |

jl115: what relevance is this? My point is how reliant the Russian economy is on the EU Is Russia in Europe or Africa? Trade is a two-way street. The EU is equally very dependent on Russia gas and Agricultural produce. |

jl115: it might come as a surprise but I don't play video games, being outside was always more of my forte.... Anyway my knowledge of military matters are solely out of hobby, hence Ive read several books from Mr Heitman, Col Stander, Mr Barlow, Sun Tzu(obviously!!) ect ect
Also my dad was a lieutenant in the SADF, My Dad's oldest brother a Captain, his other 2 brothers were NCOs and my cousin was a troopy.
So yeah.... Not call of duty bru I don't see any of your own specific military qualifications there. Your dad, his older brother and his cousin are not in this thread, the alleged qualifications of your family members do not translate to yours. Which boils down to the fact you lack the requisite knowledge, information and experience to talk with authority on this matter. |

GreenandGold: Sweden's war doctrine is to defend against Russia, they even build their weapons around that. eg, their Airforce is designed operate on country roads on a team of less than 5 engineers per Gripen, they have a highly mobile navy as well. They know that Russia will go for military infrastructure when invading.
Ukraine didn't have recorn on the ground, they didn't have small ambush teams along the way with any kind of fortifications. The Russians literally drove to the outskirts of the capital with minimum effort. At this point, they don't even need to attack it, they can simply blockage it and starve the population for the president to give up the fight and surrender himself.
NB: It's always easy to defend your home group because you know the terrain better. All you need to do is to make them bleed hard to demotivate them. Knowing terrain better might have been true in the past, but with the advent of GPS & Glonnass systems, the attacking forces knows what to expect in different terrains. How easy is it to store aircraft parts and munitions without the enemy noticing your movements? Marketing gimmicks will fail eventually. We really cannot say Ukraine didn't have recon teams with the very little information we have sitting comfortably in our different sofas in our different countries. |

jl115: What I posted isn't "dumb" but actual accepted science taught in military schools around the world!.....
Also did I say Ukraine was similarly equipped?........... What you shared doesn't make sense. When talking about the conflict in Ukraine, and you say this "It's pretty common military knowledge that a defending force has a 3:1 advantaged vs a similarly equipped foe", what does it mean? |

jl115: They have a poor economy my bru!! and guess what 40% of there imports and exports are to and from the EU!! It is to be expected, the EU is one of the world's largest trading bloc, should the Russians have traded more with Africa instead? Pick up a map please. |

jl115: Entrenchment, Fortifications, Mobilisation of troops, Build up of military stocks.............How much more do you want me to mention?? You know they didn't do all these sitting from your extensive military experience playing Call of Duty..... Quite impressive!!! jl115: Seems like your alternative is to do fvckall because it's Russia..........Russia might look impressive on paper but they have a fragile economy and don't necessary have the projection capability to sustain a force of 100 000 for that long! Ukrainian capitulation was to be expected, they are right on the border with a significantly more powerful neighbour. They don't have the full support of all their citizens. Russia conducted a very successful SEAD mission on day 1 of this conflict. Russia has a very impressive military, it took their army less than 48 hours to reach Kyiv. The operation by the military of Russia has been largely successful, with targets met. The Russians have only deployed a fraction of the forces they have positioned for this military operation. |

Go do some research, maybe read about the Lanchester's laws.....It's pretty common military knowledge that a defending force has a 3:1 advantaged vs a similarly equipped foe This is dumb on so many levels. I should go read a book when real life, real time events say completely otherwise? So, Ukraine is similarly equipped to Russia? WTF!!! |

jl115: They should've entrenched themselves in strategic positions especially in cities.........Russia has a very poor economy and with the massive sanctions they could of easily dragged on this war and made it exponentially more difficult for the Russians. Russians don't have a poor economy, the Russians do not also purchase military equipment using US dollars. The Russians have endured sanctions since 2008, yet they have significant military operations in Ukraine, Syria and now Ukraine again since then. The Ukrainians never stood a chance against a neighbour that is widely considered to have the second largest military in the world. Real life conflict is not a video game. This ynot Call of Duty. |

GreenandGold: They're not even behaving like professional military. To only think the Russians have only sent a portion of their army and the Ukrainians have crumbled.
To be fair, what Russia deployed is nothing amazing, if they had to use the same equipment on Sweden, they'd get their Russian asses whipped.
There should have been plenty of ambush points along the freeways, they were given plenty of Javelins and close to a thousand projectiles. Even if they were unlucky, they should have downed dozens of helicopters and took out dozens of tanks - it's all they needed to do. I've seen hundreds of Ukrainian POWs, some simply abandoned their posts and fled. I don't think Sweden can defeat Russia. We haven't seen Russian EW capabilities thus far in this conflict, to their credit they have also minimized attacking areas with high civilian populations. A conflict with Sweden would be a different game entirely. They would employ more stand off munitions in that scenario. We haven't also seen a lot of Russian UAV's in this conflict either. I also think it is easier to attack a position than to defend it. Look at the war in Armenia. |

GreenandGold: Operators don't need air support on such missions, they don't even wear uniform for that matter. It is the kind of mission that is "off the records". Operators, especially US operators rely heavily on air defence assets to attack military positions. |

Faithful007: I'm more concerned about who has reporters and cameras on ground. News channels are biased, that's true but usually its in terms of pushing a narrative not in terms of misreporting events. Besides you're not in Ukraine to know who is reliable or not. The 3 handles i shared are widely generally considered the most reliable news sources for the current conflict in Ukraine. It's not for you to start arguing with me over it. you can choose not to accept my posts, as i have informed you on the sources i consider to be reliable. |

Faithful007: Wikipedia has been updating who is in charge since. This is the most recent narrative. Apparently it was retaken back this morning or earlier in the night, around the same time a fighter jet was shot down. Those guys on the CNN video are probably dead now. Ukraine has been training for six years on defending their country from a Russian offensive. Russia heavily underestimated them. Their military is different from 2014. A lot of training was carried out by western partners.
The Battle of Antonov Airport, also known as the Battle of Hostomel Airport, was an engagement that took place on 24 February 2022, during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Over 30 Russian helicopters landed Russian airborne troops to secure Antonov Airport in Hostomel, a suburb of Kyiv, in an attempt to create an airbridge in which troops and equipment could arrive less than 10 kilometers from Kyiv. Russian forces initially captured the airport after 3 hours of fighting, but a Ukrainian counteroffensive by the 4th Rapid Reaction Brigade of the National Guard ensued, in which the defending Russian airborne troops were encircled at the airport and destroyed.[4][5][6][7]

jl115: I disagree....Not the fact that African countries shouldn't invest in modern equipment BUT your notion that Nigeria should invest based on the Ukraine-Russia conflict for fear of "cruise missiles" and/or invasion..........None of Africa's 4 regional powers have the power projection capability to invade the other and only China, USA and Russia have the capability to launch a meaningful and sustained invasion across the ocean.....
Nigeria should continue focus on a more COIN based approach to procurement like it has lately hence the success against BH. I disagree with you. Nigeria, South Africa and other major countries in sub-saharan Africa need to invest in modern military equipment because economic prosperity can be sustained only when there is security guaranteed. Citing Russia's military invasion of Ukraine, we need to have a military that can act as a deterrent to an aggressor. If an aggressor thinks about the high casualties they are going to sustain, they would be forced to rethink an invasion. That's what I'm saying. I'm also saying that compared to South Africa, Nigeria is in a geographically worse position. The Nigerian army is currently an army designed to fight terrorism and LICW threats. However in the not too distant past we have fought wars against Cameroun and Chad. Nigeria has to incrementally change it's COIN based military posture. With the current world population at 7 billion people and growing, the effects of climate change we will see in the future wars fought purely for resource control. A COIN posture won't help us then. |
