Drs pay .Some of us have been in the static private practice for years.The initial idea of making some money to assist the family and off to UK/US for residency is defeated.Reason no bulk cash to sponsor the ideal programmes.

Really is good to hear some people talk about medicine and the pay of its practitioners. Th e truth of all is that in any profession, there are always those that end up being not so happy and fulfilled. We can spend eternity talking about the pay of docs but let's not forget that in the community of docs lies a lot of differences in skills. There is money in surgery not just medicine. I know docs in our country that take at 800000 monthly aside other allowances and i have also heard of those that get as low as 40000 but not 18000. I believe no doc with the right qualification and repute will take that low. What many people don't know is that some people we think to be docs are not really what they claim. Maybe they have had their licences witheld or have a very bad medical record of employment. I magine 8 of your patients dying out of ten. No good hospital will take you. As much as i love medicine i don't practice for peanuts. If i think i can't get enough pay in my country, i'll go elsewhere. That's where we have the problem. Most of our indigenously trained docs are educationally inadequate to get a job in better countries so they claim they want to stay here.

@ Agaba n Konji;nuff respect! .My medical training in Nig. wasn't easy for the family and I knew the effort I put in to pass the exams.Much is now expected of me.I must make them proud and in this practice too.I will have to invest in non-medical ventures but the initial capital will come surely from this 'rubbish' practice.

Medical Drs now seek employment in banks,Telecom companies,oil companies and factories. .The basic issue here is not whether Drs are creme de la creme of the society or not.The point here is that the benefits of commensurate remunerations especially for medical Drs cannot be overflogged.Quackery,infamous conduct,criminal practice,negligence etc will surely thrive if the very corrupt policy makers(who have increased their pay by 100%),fails to pay attention to the health sector."To whom much is given,much is expected".The Dr whose family has invested a lot on has no alibi in the fact that his job is humanitarian.Some were even sponsored by community effort.

@Ziga.It is unfair for any Nig trained Dr practising or training in UK or US to say that Drs package is good in Nig.The decay in infrastructure and few illequiped hospitals is as a result of failure of government not individual Drs.

I am not happy with the views of non medics on this thread.Their arguments are skewed.

I am not surprised at the reaction of non medical professionals on this thread.I have tried discussing Drs pay in many fora with non medics;it is simply an exercises in futility! They will never understand.The Dr is a humanitarian,period! Take this or leave,the sensitization is on,things will soon improve for the average Dr in Nigeria.

@Artic,word! Zamfara state has already imported 27 Drs from Egypt.See how silly that sounds when there are over 47,000 Drs trained in Nigeria currently at home.Why not employ and develop them further.The salaries of legislators has just been increased over 100% siting inflation.Are Drs running a different economy?

All the blame goes to our policy makers and the older colleagues who deemphasised money.A Dr's job is 'humanitarian'.Yes.But a Dr is 1st a person with normal basic needs-befitting shelter,balanced diet,neat and good clothing,mobility to and fro hospital[s](we have no organised public transportation in Nigeria),[/s]family needs,religious obligations etc.If he is poorly paid,he might be forced to compromise the standards as we now see.

I still insist that Nigerian women are too greedy.They sacrifice morals and their personality for money.That is why the husbands will cheat and marry as many wives as possible with minimal or no resistance from her.All she will be interested in is money,money,money! :

It's has always been the wives who complain on inadequate sex/style as an alibi for unfaithfulness.A man may tend to look for sexual satisfaction elswhere though if the wife becomes sexually dumb not necessarily for Mouth Gig.Some girls are greedy;ready to sleep with a dog for money.I will not blame the men for that.

Its never an easy decision in practice.Medically,its not advisable.The pobability of having a sickler is 25% per pregnancy.Both of you have to fully appreciate this and agree on remaining in love in the event of the worst case scenario.Good luck!
