DeLaRue: I agree In addition, The State Police becomes the private army of whoever the governor/godfather is. Again, I go back to my earlier point about leadership, no matter how noble or lofty an idea is, bad managers will implement it badly. 1 Like 1 Share |

modath: Agitating for regionalism online won't do much good. The relationship between representatives (senate, house) and constituents is broken in Nigeria for many reasons. If people start to pressure their reps to push for Regionalism, then discussions can start. This is why I posited earlier that the issue is mainly leadership. Can the current Yoruba leadership not see these issues or is it that they don't care? PrincessJaneDoe: It would be unfair to introduce tax on bad roads. To tax roads, the government must first deliver good roads. 1 Like |

oduastates: Administratively, states can be unviable in the long term. When you have too many states, you create too many ministeries which slows the pace of development and eats into revenue. What you want really are local governments that are closer to the people. And no, tourism alone can't feed the SW. The nations that rely on tourism alone are very small nations with small populations. How can you develop the huge expense of SW Land and approximately 50-60 million people on tourism? Not all parts of the SW will contribute to tourism. Have you visited countries who mainly rely on tourism to see how the common folk live? Leaving Nigeria is not going to be a solution because old feuds/rivalries will re-surface. It's better to be unified based on competition with other regions. Current Yoruba leaders, from administrators to Afenifere, do not espouse the concept of Omoluabi. The ordinary yoruba person will be at the mercy of charlatans in an Odua only country. Pragmatic solutions can and must be found within the current dispensation because those at the center have not shown the appetite to change the structure of the country. 1 Like 1 Share |

Gbawe: Lets look at the issues from a leadership perspective It is clear to all that most states in Nigeria are not sustainable. Osun, Ekiti spring to mind in the SW. When a person becomes a leader, he must know most of the issues bedevilling his/her area of leadership. A first year university student should be able to tell you that most states have a bloated civil service. So why do governors maintain this bloated service? Isn't it so that they can use it a tool in the political arsenal? Second, a situation where an administrator receives more than 90% of his revenue from the central government is a rather dangerous one and any wise administrator will do what it takes to increase the IGR of his area. What are SW governors doing in terms of increasing revenue? Not much if they struggle to pay salaries. Third, in the face of the most austere conditions, how is it that ALL Nigerian governors are relatively wealthy? You don't need Sherlock Holmes to tell you that corruption is the source of their wealth. What I am driving at is that governors reserve their own corruption budget and then seek to execute what they can with they feel is the remainder of the budget. So what are the solutions 1. Merge states but we know this won't happen due to pride and greed 2. Reduce the civil service but we know this won't happen because governors want to use the civil service to further their selfish ambitions 3. Increase revenue through agriculture, taxed services, tourism (but security must be improved first) 4. Reduce mismanagement & corruption 5. Reduce nepotism & cronyism 6. Increase expenditure on education, particularly for gifted students 7. Reduce the size of the underground economy from approximately 70% to at least 30% There are brilliant people all over Nigeria but Nigeria will not progress if its the same professional politicians who continue to aspire to office at ALL costs. To surmise, the issue is one of leadership and not one of falling crude prices. Aregbesola, Fayemi, Amosun, Fayose, Mimiko, Ambode are all failures. They should step aside for better leaders. 5 Likes 3 Shares |

Going by some commentary here, it is obvious why the struggle to develop the SW is real. The debate has turned to 'you guys are bad' and 'yes we are bad but you guys were worse'. What can't be argued though is that there is failure to deliver and develop. SMDH 6 Likes |

I haven't read the entire thread but kudos to all asking pertinent questions. In my view, the present SW Leadership is failing. Fashola apart, the others have been a disappointment - Aregbesola, Ajumobi, Fayemi, Amosun, Ambode, Mimiko. There are no sustainable ideas from any of them. The sad part is that they are all missing a great opportunity. Shymexx, Zimoni, Raumdeter, 9jacrip, Gbawe - Salutations to you all. |

Shymm3x: During the carnival is usually best in feb or march. If you are looking for some Yoruba history and culture, then you want to go to Salvador in Feb and March because the Yemoja festival is in Feb and then you can wait for the Salvador carnival which is the best street carnival in the world. If you want an extended holiday, then you can start with the new years party. Avoid June because there are lots of regional festivals which results in folk returning to their home towns. Salvador is also safer than Rio. And don't go alone. |

chic2pimp: I think that has to do with the British giving him credit for what others did and overlooking his errors in the same vein. I remember Henry being interviewed some years ago in a game in which Henry didn't score. The interviewer asked what Henry thought of being marked out of the game by Henry and Henry, with an astonished look on his face, responded that it was Gallas who played against him throughout the game. If another defender had been left liked a disabled man on the ground like Ayew left Terry 2 weeks ago, you would have been hearing from Rednapp, Murphy, Neville, etc about how useless that defender is. But I guess, you (chic2pimp) can consider him a great defender. If Terry is a great defender, then Nesta, Ferdinand, and Cannavaro must be out of this world. 4 Likes |

Shymm3x: Brethen Not hiding here; my first posts in a while. I get your point but I still rate Boateng higher. I actually think Boateng doesn't get the required plaudits because he is an African playing for a country that was once ruled by Hitler and the Nazis. If Boateng had so many vulnerabilities, Germany would have considered more goals enroute to the finals and may not have even won the cup. But I guess we get to agree to disagree on Boateng but agree on Terry. A40: DSTV Boys!! That must be some kind of heavy diss; I can only speculate. 5 Likes |

Individual awards are nothing more than popularity contests. Messi is the best player in the world no doubt but even he hasn't deserved every award he has won. Terry is overrated; doesn't get exposed so much because he is part of a tight defensive unit at Chelsea. He has always had solid partners. Boateng all day everyday over Terry. Just my opinion. 7 Likes |

On the evidence of the last three years and the misuse of so many talented players; Rodgers isn't going to take Liverpool forward. Unfortunately, we have owners who don't understand football very well. The only plus is that we do have some good players that can be used by a new coach, hopefully Klopp. We will see how much progress Rodgers has made when they play Arsenal on Monday. |

honourhim: There is always diversity of opinion in Yorubaland. Ogunlewe is entitled to his opinion as are other Yoruba sons. Do not attempt to overplay the significance of Ogunlewe's opinion as if he is some sort of Awolowo. There are people in the US who believe that immigration should be allowed for all. Has that changed US Policy towards immigration? In any case Ogunlewe is stating that Igbos, like other Nigerians, have contributed to the economic growth of Lagos. What he isn't saying is that Lagos will collapse if the Igbo left. There was Lagos before significant migration to it and there will be Lagos if there is migration away from it. Lagos, and other states, will benefit from migration away from Lagos. Everyone talks about the economic growth of Lagos due to migration but no one talks about the demerits of migration to Lagos such as crime, overpopulation, environmental pollution, strain on infrastructure, etc. Other state administrators should be working on improving their own states and the indigenes of those states should be demanding accountability from their administrators instead of coming online to 'fight' for the ownership of another state. 5 Likes 2 Shares |

So many economically ignorant folk making silly comments. When a group of people leave their land to move to a foreign area, they do so because they believe there are opportunities that exist in the foreign land which do not exist in their own home. You only need to create the same or better opportunities in your home and the migrants should return home. Surely it shouldn't be too hard for this people who make Lagos what it is to create this opportunities at home? Or is it a case of talking out of one's ar.se? Talk is cheap. If migrants can make a foreign land great, surely they can make their home greater. Why worry about what happens to Lagos if you leave? Let the owners, indigenes, and administrators of Lagos worry about Lagos. 7 Likes 1 Share |

AustineE1: What book are you referring to? So we can ascertain why it doesn't have that Ekiti Parapo used Cannons. Was it the same book that referred to Aare Latoosa as a notorious babalawo? It is obvious you don't know the differences between a Babalawo and a native doctor or medicine man. You completely missed the boat with your comment about Fulani joining Oyo. Who were the Fulani and Oyo participants in the war? Where did they fight their battles? I think you should take your own advice in getting your facts right before venturing into a debate you are ill-equuipped for. 7 Likes 1 Share |
