CareerRe: Total Oil And Gas Workers by KayDee4:
Santino1: Nice thread....@T22, Jarus, AJ, Debosky, Naijababe, Kay-Dee (my oga I see you oo). well done for all the great tips.

I am presently in the final lapse of my M.Sc programme in one of the top 20 universities in Europe and intend to proceed to the Ph.D level (apparently, not everyone is cut out for O and G job) because I've always had this flair for research.

I presently have an SNF fully-funded Ph.D offer in one of the top schools in Western Europe but I'll prefer a funded position in US or Canada instead. To this end, I have applied to TAMU and Unialberta.

I would like to know which you think is the best.

T22, Jarus, AJ, Debosky, Naijababe, Kay-Dee, I'm awaiting your expert opinions.

Thanks
Debo already said it all.
If the expert in your field of interest is retiring, hook up with the next best person there; these are top schools and their faculty members are world-renowned and can easily get industry funding for research projects. But if the alternative is more inclined to geophysics like you said, then you may have to look around a little more, because a geophysicist's knowledge of Sequence Strat. will most likely be shallow for a big research. Sequence strat. is already too complicated for core stratigraphers not to mention geophysicists.
You may have to tune (not totally deviate) your research interests to blend with what and who is available because sometimes, its difficult to find someone or data or available projects that exactly match your interest.
You should get back to the TAMU guy who is into petroleum geosciences and tell him what your interests are; true its a broad term/field but it includes Sequence Strat. and Basin analysis so your research work can be narrowed down to any of these aspects.
PoliticsRe: Oil Discovered In Sokoto State by KayDee4:
Doesn't matter if Sokoto is a desert, there are oil-rich eolian (desert land) basins all around the world, we should never say never about the occurrence or quantity of oil up there; the focus has been on the proven reserves in the Niger Delta and most of these other areas have been overlooked in the past. With the advent of new and improved technology, more knowledge about unconventional oil and how to tap these resources, some of these areas are being re-visited and who knows what they will find.
PoliticsRe: South Sudan Begs Nigeria Police For Training by KayDee4:
Missing' road of the highest order !!!

The entire Nigerian police force should be trained from the scratch and for Sudan to be asking for training by NPF is like a guy at the bottom of the class asking his fellow dunces to tutor him. The way Nigerian policemen operate is at best, mediocre, it is nothing close to "effective or desirable; blame it on whoever or whatever working conditions they have to contend with but the bottom line remains that they need training (maybe even more than their S.sudanese counterparts).

I've had a lot of encounters with Nigerian policemen and their approach most times reeks of envy and arrogance, (which in the past has led to death of innocent citizens), professionalism is completely missing from the police dictionary. Most of the time, you have an incident and call them, they don't respond until hours after the robbers must have gone, then they rush in to arrest and lock up innocent people and sometimes the caller sef' (just to get bail money) - extortion. Ive seen policemen run from live crime scenes (blame it on poor remuneration and "who will take care of his family . . . . ." ;whatever) it's still a police job to fight crime .

However there are the brave ones who contribute in their own little way to keep crime rate down and I appreciate the effort they put into crime fighting, even though its poor, its better than not having them at all. Some of them engage robbers in dangerous shootouts and i show respect for any such bravery;I've had cases when i was happy to see them because I was driving late and the roads were dark and lonely and I've had friends that were maltreated and even robbed by policemen because they found themselves in the same late-night-driving situation.

Citizens can choose to show them sympathy for their working conditions and all that but nobody should be maltreated, brutalized or forcibly extorted for police predicaments.

Nigerian policemen need training and should join S.Sudan in their search for appropriate police trainers.
