kweeneve: Hi everyone,am a graduate of geology still serving though, but I wanna go for my masters in petroleum geology that's what have always wanted, but my dad called me yesterday saying I have to go for petroleum economics, I don't really know much about the course and how fast I can get a job with an m.sc in petroleum economics, tried convincing him but he remain adamant and won't finance any other course except this. How lucrative is the course, what n what does it entails, is there any graduate of petroleum economics in the house that can put me through. Cause I don't want to waste my time studying a course that will be useless on the long run. thks
Petroleum economics is good and won't be useless in the long run smiley but I don't understand why your dad will force you to do something that's against your wish. Anyway, there's a program I know that comes close to a combination of both areas of interest (Petroleum Geology and Petroleum Economics) : The Earth and Energy Resources program at the Jackson School of geosciences, UT Austin; but getting into that school is so frigging competitive. I also think one of Alberta or Calgary in Canada has something similar to that. Look up these 3 schools to see the degrees they offer and structure of their programs, search for other schools too i'm sure you will find programs that will give you a mix of both areas.

Donxavier: . What I infer from your response is the importance of a masters degree in today's cut throat competitive world. In your opinion, Do you think it's better to go for your masters abroad if one has the opportunity immediately after one is through with one's first degree. It seems getting the masters is a given nowadays, at least when ascending up the corporate ladder.
If you have the opportunity to start immediately, I'll advise you get down to it ASAP, unless you're lucky to get a job in your area of specialization where you will gain relevant experience.
PoliticsRe: U.S Ready To Assist FG In Dana Crash Investigation by KayDee4:
bayooooooo: God punish America. We don't need them. The same America is saying poverty is the cause of Boko Haram. They say they are not terrorists but are now opening consulate in Kano to monitor them. Even at that, what is there to investigate?

You have the black box that have the record of happenings before the crash? The plane itself had history of patch patch, when last was it maintained? For how long are we going to be calling America, UK etc to help solve what a Kasali can solve?

Ikeja Bomb Blast, you called them. Sosoliso crash, you called them. Boko Haram rescue operations, British soldiers were there.

Set up a panel, examine the records and question the actors, any body found culpable, just mete out the appropriate punishment. Then any plane not found air worthy and any personnel whose competence is in doubt, just say NO, you can't fly.

We don't need Americans for that.
Guy, to understand the way these guys investigate air disasters, take out some time to watch "Air crash investigation" on National Geographic Channel whenever you can and you will see that Nigeria is still very far behind (no disrespect) from carrying out such investigations to reach meaningful conclusions and ascertain the causes of plane crashes.

These institutions are already there and you don't need to form any panel or committee that will constitute retired farmers and politicians who know nothing about aviation and will put out a rubbish report at the end of the day.

A proper investigation is necessary to prevent a re-occurrence. Even though the cause is almost obviously due to lack of proper maintenance and a faulty craft (from side reports), a formal investigation will still be carried out and the NTSB will be involved because the plane was made in the US.

Dana aircraft makes emergency landing in Lagos

Written by Shola Adekola, Lagos Friday, 11 May 2012

AN MD 83 aircraft belonging to Dana Air, with 86 passengers onboard from Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Thursday evening, made an emergency landing at the 19-R runway and was towed away after it blocked the international runway of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.

The aircraft ran into problem while preparing to land at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, as it suffered hydraulic pressure, a situation that forced the pilot to declare an emergency landing.

The aircraft was cleared for landing in 19-R, the longer runway, but after landing, passengers were panicky, as most of the evacuation buses did not arrive on time.

Corporate Communication Manager of Dana Air, Mr Tony Usidaimen, confirmed the incident.

“Our flight from Uyo with 86 passengers lost hydraulic pressure and when the captain noticed it, he declared an emergency and was asked to land on 19-R. Although there was no injury, there was a panic, because the evacuation team did not arrive on time,” he said.

The Director-General, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Dr Harold Demuren, who also confirmed the incident, said he was impressed with the fact that the pilot decided to land at the longer international runway, adding that “it shows that we are getting our safety management systems right.”
. . . . . . . and after this, it was given clearance to continue flying. No form of investigation was carried out. undecided undecided . Some people should be jailed. angry angry

Temistatics 007: Indians, they'll always be at the fore-front of all destruction, they bankrupted DSC(delta stell company),now this.can't those companies be jettissonede.g dana?
justesq: WHAT A BLACK DAY: from Mtn to Julius berger, to elf and other oil companies, now the aviation, they are here to exploit nigerians, imagine these foreign companies make heavy money here in nigeria but dont consider our lives, it could have been me or u they killed, this was not an accident or fate, its just a sheer attitude of carelessness and negligence plus unproffessionalism for a engineer to order for a faulty plane to be flown, someone at the top management of Dana Air should be made to suffer for this loss to nigeria. cool cool
Really sad but we cant keep blaming just the foreign companies. If the regulatory authorities do their job like they are supposed to, then there will be no loopholes or avenue for these foreign companies to serve Nigerians with these mediocre services that put our lives @ risk and get away with it all the time. I don't see why a company that refuses to comply with regulations should not be kicked out but then we keep hearing about "corner-cutting" and other forms of corruption.

Planes are not like cars, you know?

I smell a foul play.

mr swagger: @Kay Dee.. Thanks for the info.. Pls how does the airpot post office work.. Because I'm considering using nipost or a government post office.. Because I was told here dt one can send documents to Us with #600 within 10 days it wud get to Us.. But it seems your method seems faster nd cheper...@Kay Dee what airport is dt? And wht r d procedures?.. Because I intend sending my application to 5 universities in Us soon.. Thanks. Hope to hear from you Asap..
NIPOST Post Office @ MMIA Lagos. It's not a very complicated process, just go there and tell the people @ the post office what you want to do. They will weigh your docs and tell you how much it wld cost you. your school application docs should be documents of 2-3 pages per piece and that should be about N200-N300. Registered and unregistered take the same amount of time to get to the recipient (5-7-10 working days), the difference is in the cost and the security you get for the registered mails because you can always track it (I sent all as unregistered mails and nothing ever went missing).

If you have an idea of how much stamps you need for your package, you can buy a bunch of stamps and go drop it off @ the airport at anytime (weekends, late night or public holiday) whether they are @ work or not because the mail box slit is just outside the post office for you to slip in your package.

I don't know if anything has changed cos i did this some years ago; you might wanna go there and talk to one of the post-office workers just to be on the safe side.
