MissOwaa: Thank you, I’m coming with my spouse he’s an IT specialist. The school is in London and London is really expensive. My questions: 1) My school is full time, Monday - Friday! 9-4 pm. This means I might only be able to work weekends! Please what opportunities are available for weekend jobs and any idea of the rates? 2) Also accommodation in London is pretty expensive Any ideas about cheap studio places we can stay that’s close to London or cities can we stay outside London where I can still commute to school. I will.like to answer Q1 as a current PGCE student in the UK. I strongly reckon that your forget about any job until you are almost done with your course. The first few months into the course was a nightmare for me despite 7 year experience as a maths teacher in Naija. The Educ system is wide and thorough, too many things to get used to as an international student. Even when you are in school weekdays, you've got planning to do over the weekend cos at some point you workload/timetable will be overwhelming plus Uni assignments, and evidence collection. PGCE is rigourous but quite rewarding |

umarwy: A word is enough for the wise
Met police have started picking people driving without a license/insurance.
Those using international license, make sure you are within the permitted term of use, else OYO is your case.
Invest in a full license even if you aren't planning to get a car soon.
The painful thing is this guy has had his test postponed severally due to covid. E don turn double wahala for dead body I plan to get a car but I have the normal naija driving license not international, does that suffice please? |

famzynet: Thanks for this info. Please how long is the PGCE primary programme and like how much in pounds could it cost? I have a sister with about 15yrs experience teaching secondary English in Nigeria and looking for right pathway to come over to the UK. Google is the best plug for the information you need. 1Search for Universities that offer the course, 2 put a call throught to them to be sure they accept international students (cos some do not). 3. Ask about their interview process (it used to be done in person/on site pre-covid). 4. Best of luck to her |

djo120920: Thank you dear STENON.
I will take your suggestion. But I fear the market will be oversaturated with English teachers. What do you think? And what are the chances of gaining a job (leading to Tier 2 visa and ultimately ILR) with the QTS award?
My initial plan was to come study MSc Social Research and then go on to conduct academic research at the PhD level. I already got admission for that. But I also love teaching, especially in the classroom. And someone mooted the idea of the QTS to me. I'm about to start applying for that. Can you point me towards some universities that offer PGCE with QTS? I've seen a couple, like Reading, Coventry, and Kingston. I'd like to see if there are others as well.
Thank you again Hello, I stumbled on your post and thought to give a sincere advice as a current PGCE student in UK. PLEASE DO NOT COME TO STUDY PGCE SECONDARY ENGLISH, IT IS HARD TO GET A JOB. I have colleagues in Secondary English really scouting for jobs. Like you said that department is saturated. You may look at PGCE primary instead, if you want settlement. PS. I study secondary mathematics and already got a job for September. |

Hello, @justwise, @mimilyrics I am here for advice. I am already in the UK for my PGCE course and i must confess it's really tedious. I never expected the the degree of shock I'm still in and i miss my family so much. I was about commencing the dependant visa when a thought struck me, i thought it would be better i invite my family to come visit instead since i have barely 8 months on my visa and the cost implications aren't comparable . Although, they can still do the dependant route but i prefer they don't spend so much on visa and IHS. I also thought to have my husband's niece come over to help with the kids. I would have preferred going home but i can't due to the nature of my course, it runs alongside the sec school calendar and breaks are averagely 2weeks before the Summer holiday. Can i please get opinions, i don't want to complicate their application. I terribly miss home and it's having a toll on my mental health. Thank you. |

omopapa: Can you educate me on the difference btw the 2 pls. Cus I knw someone who’s doing the program in unilorin 1. In Naija we only have PGDE, for those with non-eduction background transitioning into teaching. 2. iPGCE is international postgraduate certificate in education (England) normally done as distance learning with support from learning centres e.g corona trust run the ipgce for Nothingham University and it is clearly stated that it can't get you a QTS hence not totally equivalent to the PGCE as the key module (teaching practice) isn't fulfilled. 3. There are different pathways to getting QTS (Qualified teacher status) I. Through the SCITT School-centred initial teachers. training. Unfortunately, most cannot sponsor tier4 students. Ii. PGCE (from England) PGDE (Scotland). U get. recommended for QTS after the course. Within 2-4 years from PGCE I gope this helps |

omopapa: Please permit me to divert your attention a little.
If I were you, I’d do a one year postgraduate certificate degree in education (PGCE) program preferably in a private uni in Nigeria cus
1. You get to graduate on time with no ASUU wahala and 2. Its cheaper than doing it in the UK
After that you can then apply for qualified teacher status (QTS) even though you might have to complete the initial teacher training (ITT) in UK.
The only downside to this is that overseas trained teachers take a four year route of training before they are awarded the QTS but it’s worth Cus u will still be paid while training and working the job
I suggest this Cus of ur background and maths teachers are in high demand in the U.K. This idea is fantastic except that 1. PGCE in Naija won't give him much opportunities in the UK. SCITT can't sponsor tier4 students. I will suggest he enrolls in a PGCE course in UK which will in turn get him recommended for QTS. He can teach with PGCE till he feels comfortable to get QTS (within 4 years i think). |

ajags80: People,
My Biometrics and Interview, VI TLS Aug 26th. Complex/Not straight forward mail 14th Sept, Mail for Telephone Interview On 15th, Telephone Interview scheduled for 9am but started at 9.30am today. The network was poor and the Interviewer had not interacted with many Nigerians in the past or my accent is too Nigerian. We kept having to go over every response I gave. I spelt out more than 50% of my feedback.
Not to scare anyone, it took about 1 and a half hours, I found it laborious, And i had to use my initiative. The session was just so stressful.
I hope for the best and Please Pray for this Sister! Don't fret sis, it will definitely end in praise. I will have mine tomorrow, your questions will help a great deal. |

Slimmzyy: Hey Cyberknight, I think you can actually be more constructive and polite when replying people and if you don't have answers for their questions, kindly ignore!!! If you are coming to the UK to study and live here hopefully, you need to develop your emotional intelligence. What's impolite about telling people to read up on first hand , detailed experiences?. He even explained how to search for discuss topics. I still won't be able to understand your goad. |

ajags80: Good Evening All,
Please help. After my bio-metrics and Interview, was I supposed to get a mail from UKVI? Because I did not. My Interview was on August 26th and I just need to be sure. Someone said they should have asked me to confirm my email and i should have a mail from them. The last email I have is the TLS Contact mail about my appointment date. I used the link (TLS) to track though and its been on on stage 2 "application transferred to decision Making Center" for over a week.
Do I need to check if they have my correct email? If yes, please what email can I channel this through?
Grateful for your help and Regards. We are in the same boat, hope to sail through nextweek. |
