Christianity Etc › Re: Get Rid Of Stereotypes About Hijab Here's Some Basic Information On Hijab. by Kdon2: 6:37am On Aug 02, 2019 |
muslimslife: Nazma Khan, United Nations agency immigrated to the u. s. from Asian country at age eleven, struggled years of shaming over carrying scarf on Head in New York.
https://www.muslims-life.net/why-do-muslim-women-wear-hijab/
So, in 2013, she started World Hijab Day – on a daily basis for each Muslim and non-Muslim girls to try carrying scarf on head.
Celebrated on February. 1, the day is the expression of commonness and support for religious freedom.
As a scholar of Muslim immigrants, I actually have conjointly long argued for women’s right to spiritual expression in their vesture selections. The hijab isn't merely regarding faith – girls wear it for a range of reasons which will modify, looking on the time and social context.
Does Islam requires you to wear a veil?
Various passages within quran, the Muslim holy book, and therefore the Hadiths, statements attributed to the Prophet Mohammad, build respect to veiling by the prophet’s wives. however students disagree regarding whether or not these statements apply solely to the prophet’s wives or to any or all Muslim girls.
According to some, the veil has been used as the simplest way of end male active nature. nonetheless covering the top and body predated Islam. Jewish, Christian and Hindu girls have conjointly covered their head at numerous times in history and in several components of the planet.
Certainly, the headband is tied to faith. many ladies United Nations agency cowl bring up it as the simplest way demonstrating their submission to God and a continuing reminder to carry quick to Muslim beliefs like being honest and generous to those in need.
Asserting identity However, there are alternative reasons for adopting the hijab.
French and British colonizers inspired Muslim girls to get rid of the veil and emulate European girls. Consequently, in North African and geographical region countries, the veil became a logo of national identity and opposition to the West throughout independence and nationalist movements.
Today, some girls wear the hijab to signal pride in their ethnic identity. this is often for immigrants in Europe and therefore the u. s., wherever there has been a rise in prejudice.
In a Facebook post for World Hijab Day 2018 that went really popular, Columbia college boy Toqa Badran wrote,
“I wear this scarf as a result of after I was a baby i used to be socialised to be embarrassed, even repentant, of my faith and my culture. i used to be told that to be a Muslim was to be a terrorist which to be externally Muslim was to endorse violence and oppression … I understood that i'd be unwelcome as long as I wore symbols of my heritage and selected to, in but trendy the simplest way, embrace my ancestors.”
Muslim African-American girls within the U.S. generally wear a hijab to signal their muslim affiliation. They conjointly wish to dispel the idea that every one African-Americans are Christians, which solely individuals with origins abroad are often Muslim. In fact, thirteen % of adult Muslims within the U.S are black Americans born within the country.
Different reasons for carrying a hijab:
For many alternative girls, the headband has become a method of resistance to standards of female beauty that demand a lot of exposure. Proponents of this view argue that removing covering for the good thing about the male gaze doesn't equal liberation.
According to researchers, girls in hijabs note that employers should move with them supported their qualifications instead of their look which, therefore, the hijab levels the taking part in field. In Western countries, however, girls notice that carrying a veil makes it more durable to get employed.
Finally, for a few girls, the headband could be a convenience. It will cut back comments from others regarding girls being enter public and reduce incidents of harassment on the road and at work.
Despite the multiple, difficult reasons behind carrying a hijab, there are {those United Nations agency|those that|people who} habitually assert that ladies who wear a headband are essentially burdened.
Examples of hijab-wearing girls within the government, like recently elective congressman Ilhan Omar, or athletes like Olympian fighter Ibtihaj Muhammad, might facilitate dispel these stereotypes. We dont want to know. Las las n terrorist be una best achievement. No love just hatefilled bunch of sick religion followers! |
Politics › Re: Buhari Is Taking Nigerians For Granted :akin Oyebode by Kdon2: 10:35pm On Aug 01, 2019 |
striker07: Excerpts from Prof. Akin Oyebode's interview conducted by Punch and reproduced with permission from Punch.
Punch: The President once said the herdsmen killing Nigerians were from Libya, and some people have also said that the insecurity in the country is being fuelled by the influx of foreigners into the country, aided by the ECOWAS protocol that allows freedom of movement of persons among members states. Do we blame the protocol or it’s just an excuse?
Prof.: I can’t speak for President Muhammadu Buhari; he has more information than my humble self, but I am aware that Cameroon and Chad are not members of ECOWAS, so if he says the Fulani coming in are from outside, we should look at it critically. For me, Buhari wants to be clever by half by talking of invaders, whereas he’s just shopping for an excuse to justify the tyranny of his kinsmen who want to impose themselves on the country.
Punch: Are you implying that the Fulani are immigrants?
Prof.: The fact is that Nigeria seems to be chafing under the intrusion of non-Nigerians who kill mercilessly because they don’t have any affinity with any of the ethnic groups inhabiting Nigeria. So, they have been very cruel and inhuman in the way they deal with the farmers. The conflict is almost beyond the comprehension and capacity of Buhari, who is a Fulani. Atiku also claims to be Fulani – because people are disputing the circumstances of his birth – and that was why I didn’t vote at the last election because it was a choice between two Fulani, so I didn’t bother. I was most times analysing on the television. However, Buhari might want us to forget the fact but some of us will not forget. We know where his sympathy lies. He claims to be a nationalist, but he’s not. The Fulani know how to protect themselves. For example, when people talk about the necessity for Buhari to rejig the security apparatus, they don’t know who they are talking to. He even confessed a few weeks ago that he has to appoint the people he knows; his kinsmen. It is a Fulani dominated government and that has cost him a lot of credit such that many people don’t believe him anymore because he wears tinted glasses to analyse everything going on. Buhari is taking people for granted, but the Yoruba are the most widely educated people in Nigeria; they are wise and so they can see through all the shenanigans of the Fulani potentates who want to impose themselves on the rest of us.
Punch: Are you of the view that Nigeria should have wasted no time in signing the African Continental Free Trade Agreement?
Prof.: As the largest concentration of black people on earth, we have a stake in the African Union. That is why some of us were perplexed that Buhari was dithering over signing the African Continental Free Trade Agreement. Finally, push came to shove and he had to sign. I don’t know his calculation but he likes passing the buck. Someone of great insight and foresight would have signed that agreement earlier as a vote for African unification, but again you can’t exceed your limitation. If you are not properly schooled in African politics and if you look at how long it’s taking him to have a cabinet, you put a question mark on his claim to fame as a leader. That was why a country of this standing, worth and promise was like perambulating and sleepwalking on the issue. We used to call Goodluck Jonathan clueless but I don’t know what to call Buhari. Wednesday made it five months that he won election and it’s about two months that he was sworn in, and even though he assured us he would no longer be ‘baba-go-slow’, one just feels sorry for Nigeria. Look at what President Paul Kagame is doing in Rwanda. The enthusiasm and dynamism that one expects from a country of this worth have been lacking and when you now have a cabinet of lacklustre mediocre in charge of affairs, you just hang your head in shame. Quite seriously, I don’t know what (Vice-President Yemi) Osinbajo is still doing there. He is far smarter because I know him; he was my student. A brilliant guy like that should distance himself from mediocrity.
Punch: Are you saying the vice-president should have resigned?
Prof: That’s what I’m saying. He should not have joined him for a second term. For me, he has overstayed his welcome and they are even relegating him to the side. I think a brilliant man like Osinbajo should quit and go back to his ministry or law practice. How does he survive in the welter of suffocating mediocrity that you find there? The Fulani have no little or no regard for him. I would call the whole thing the tyranny of mediocrity; that is the problem Nigeria is facing right now. I feel sorry for the country that we are saddled with such an incompetent leadership, making us the butt of jokes internationally. Quite sincerely, I don’t feel comfortable with what is going on and it’s a very serious indictment if Nigeria can’t throw up a leadership that is superior to what is being offered now. People would just shake their heads and feel pity for us. We only wish Nigeria well. But the time would come when we would have fit and proper persons. This man can’t move Nigeria anywhere; the country is collapsing under him. It’s the young people I feel sorry for; we are at the departure lounge and I have my boarding pass. I’m just waiting for my flight to be called. At 72, that’s enough and out of it, I gave 44 years to Nigeria as an academic. I feel proud to have had that opportunity to serve my country. Nigeria would make it, given the right circumstances.
Punch: Do you see Africa being like Europe someday, in terms of cooperation and economic integration?
Prof.: ....Nigerians will make it any day once they have leadership that is inspiring, but I’m sorry Buhari doesn’t inspire many people. He doesn’t show the requisite personae that could spur people on. Even his claim to integrity has one thing because of the nepotistic attitude that he has in terms of appointment. It’s as if the rest of Nigerians are non-starters and I don’t believe it. In every part of Nigeria there are success stories. If only you look hard you would find them. So, I’m disgusted by what is going on. But like I said, the contradictions in the world would compel Africans to recognise the worth of cooperation among themselves.
Punch: But you supported Buhari in 2015, what changed?
Prof.: Yes, things changed and like I said, I refused to vote during this past election. I voted for him in 2015; I took the trouble to join the queue and vote for him. I thought anything but Jonathan. Jonathan was clueless but now we got a worse person than Jonathan, so I didn’t believe he deserved a second term. Some people taunted me for supporting him but I told them I was extremely sorry. The man is a disappointment and he is severely overrated. Are you proud of a President who takes months before having a cabinet? And when the list finally came out it’s a mixed grill, containing, as they say, the good, the bad and the ugly. A mediocre leader can only have persons not superior to him, whether intellectually or in moral probity.
Punch: Do you think things would be different this time round?
Prof.: No, morning shows the day. He promised not to be Baba-go-slow but it has taken him two months to put a cabinet together. What is the magic about a cabinet? I hear he might pick up anybody who is against him; maybe they would come and pick me up.
Punch: How do you feel when his followers and some others abuse you for your views on him?
Prof.: I survived Sani Abacha, and that is why I respect Jonathan. As hard as I was on him, he nominated me to the Council of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs. Thats my boss. Insightful , fearless and unsparing. |

Politics › Re: Ezeife: Ndigbo Will Cease To Be Nigerians If Denied 2023 Presidency by Kdon2: 9:08pm On Jul 27, 2019 |
Antoeni: Elder statesman and former governor of Anambra State, Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife has said that no Igbo man will still claim Nigerian citizenship if the South East zone is not supported to produce the nation’s president in 2023. In this interview with WILLY EYA, he was emphatic that denying the East the chance to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023 will be too dangerous for the unity of the country.
A major issue of concern to every Nigerian today is the increasing level of insecurity of lives and property in the country today; as a senior citizen of this country, how do you feel?
I think our traditional leaders including the Obas, Obis, Emirs and others from other areas should hold some kind of summit. It is necessary that the herdsmen are spoken to properly. Whatever happens, they are the final losers in the game, however way it ends. If they think that they are the leaders and whatever they want will happen, and they talk with some kind of arrogance, nobody enjoys beeing talked down on. They should also partner with churches and mosques to find a solution to the challenges we are facing as a country. What is happening now is very bad. I heard that about two people this morning were kidnapped in Anambra and I heard one was asked to bring N1.5 million and the second person asked to bring several millions as ransom. Such a development is not good for the country. When the British, our colonial masters left Nigeria, the Fulani had a very good name. Now, I am sure that three years from now, that is if it will be that long, some people will become hated so much that nobody will like to see them and it is not good for anybody to fall into that category. I do not want my people to be so hated and I do not also want the Fulani to be so hated. Anybody who feels he is enjoying the situation now is not realistic; it is not an enjoyable situation. We appeal to individual groups to sue for calm and we should also be talking to God with regards to the situation we find ourselves in Nigeria.
Do you agree with those who insist that the style of leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari is the cause of the crises we are having especially in the security situation in the country? There are many things going on and some people say he is doing what he is doing because he is the patron of the Miyetti Allah. All these things should be corrected for the future of the country.
One of the narratives coming from some groups and prominent northerners is that southerners, especially the Igbo, are enjoying in the North whereas they make their place (South) uncomfortable for the herders. What is your reaction to that?
Everybody knows the truth. People may pretend but everybody knows the truth. The Igbo man is comfortable in Japan, China, United States, any part of the world. No matter the condition of any place they find themselves, they try to survive there. Anybody making that kind of insinuation knows that Nigeria has fully benefitted from the Igbo man. The Igbo man believes in Nigeria and helps in developing the country. We should all approach what is happening in Nigeria today with an open mind.
So many prominent Northerners are already flying a kite that power will not come down South in 2023 after President Buhari would have spent eight years in office. As a statesman from the South East zone which is yet to have a shot at the presidency since 1999, what is your take on the projection?
It is easy to pontificate. There will be no Igbo citizenship of Nigeria if in 2023, the South East is not given serious chance to produce the president of this country. After being given a serious chance and we could not make it, that could be understood but if anybody begins to say that there is no chance in 2023, that will be very dangerous.
The argument by some people is that the Igbo are not playing good politics by always putting their eggs in one basket. The explanation is that the region has always identified with the PDP and should not expect anything from the APC government?
I do not know how many baskets there are. People who want to follow their minds would always do so. In the 2019 presidential election, the PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar who everybody knows where he comes from, became an original Igbo man. How could anybody have called on the Igbo to divide themselves and vote one part for Atiku and the other for President Buhari. The Igbo did not vote for one party actually. They voted for both the PDP and the APC but we followed our minds just like we followed former President Goodluck Jonathan. We cannot begin to pretend not to know where we want to go. What I am saying is that when it is our turn, let them vote for us, that is all.
But with the picture you are seeing in the country today, what do you think is the future of Nigeria?
I am sure you know me. For very good reasons, especially being an economist, I believe in one Nigeria. I prefer one Nigeria. Therefore, I believe that instead of having miniature countries called Nigeria, I prefer that Nigeria is a big country where there is peace and where the market is as large as it is and where individuals are at peace with one another. This is what I am thinking. In such a situation, nobody loses. The way I am thinking is the same way other Igbo are thinking about it; they crave for a peaceful large area.
How did the suspension of the controversial Ruga settlement policy come to you? I ask this question because many are calling for outright cancellation of the plan to forestall the backlash over fears of its long term implication on the areas where they are established.
I think there are many mistakes being made by this administration. We have a law which entrusted the land to the state governors and not to the president of the country. Therefore, if we follow our own law which we gave ourselves, it will be better, instead of looking for land that does not belong to the Federal Government.

Sanromeo: ONDO state Governor, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu has ordered the Police to effect the arrest of anyone or group which parades itself as Fulani Vigilante in any part of the state.
Information and Orientation, commissioner Donald Ojogo said this in a statement issued in Akure to state government position of the vexed issue.
Criticism had trailed the report of Fulani herdsmen patrolling the highway as vigilantee group.
Ojogo said the state government “has witnessed with utmost dismay, an orchestrated campaign in respect of the above subject matter.
“The intention of the sponsors and their echoers is undoubtedly, to discredit the administration of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and ostensibly, incite the people against the Ondo State Government.
“lt is pertinent to recall that upon the circulation of the story in the social media about the purported formation of an armed vigilante group by the Miyetti Allah, Governor Akeredolu was swift in his reaction to the development.
“Not only did he disown the move, if at all. He indeed ordered the Police to effect the arrest of anyone or group which parades itself as Fulani Vigilante.
“The Governor’s position was decisive even as it was pointedly consequential.
“At the risk of repeating himself, Governor Akeredolu reaffirmed the position of Government on Tuesday, July 23 when he was accosted by reporters who sought further information on the matter.
“The leadership of the Miyetti Allah in the State has equally disowned the report and has even provided further insights into actionable steps to deal with whoever conducts self in a manner that do not conform with the position of Government.
“Succinctly, therefore, the scheming media spins on the issue can only be the handiwork of divisive elements and their collaborators whose defeated desire is to demarket the Ondo State Government through unfounded claims and gross mischief.
He said that “The position of Governor Akeredolu on this matter stands. Government will not allow armed Fulani Vigilante in any part of Ondo State.
