Correctional Services Deputy Minister Thabang Makwetla today urged public servants in South Africa to shun corruption, following in the example of an “incorruptible” public service in the neighbouring Botswana.

“Civil servants in Botswana, you will encounter this when you visit that country, are so rule-driven — it is painful. Civil servants in Botswana are so conscious of the duties that they must perform. Everyone in uniform, and is an employee in Botswana … to think that you can corrupt them you’re going to struggle,” Makwetla said as he addressed correctional services officers in Pretoria.

“That starts from the ordinary, democratic, law enforcement roadblocks. Whoever has paid a bribe at a roadblock in Botswana, could you please raise your hand. There is no one. Botswana police are known to be like that.”

“As South Africans, we got to decide whether we go the route of Botswana, in terms of the success of an independent African state written about even in UN literature … but we can go the route of Nigeria – with all those resources, that oil that should have made Nigeria the richest country by far, and even the population, but ended up in the chaos in which Nigeria is.”

“I’ve lived in Botswana for five years, and I’ve never heard of a prison escape in Botswana. Never, in all the five years. Maybe I wasn’t monitoring the news properly. I’ve never heard [people] in Botswana saying their offenders have escaped from a prison. In Botswana it’s unheard of,” said the deputy minister.

Earlier, the department of correctional services (DCS) said criminals serving time in South Africa’s 243 prisons will be safely kept behind bars over the festive season, a period characterised by inmates’ launching spirited bids to escape jail to spend time with loved ones.

“It is our task to ensure that those who have wronged the law, remain behind bars, and continue to serve their sentences as imposed by the courts. Security is not something we take lightly.”

Bauchi state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has confirmed the exit of its former national chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, deputy national chairman North, Alhaji Babayo Garba Gamawa, to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Others are a former secretary to the federal government, Alhaji Ahmed Yayale, and Alhaji Kaulaha Aliyu.

This was disclosed to DAILY POST by the Bauchi PDP publicity secretary, Yayanuwa Zainabari, in an exclusive interview in Bauchi Wednesday

He described the exit of the PDP bigwigs to APC in Bauchi as shocking and a big slap to the party ahead of the 2019 polls.

“Honestly, we have confirmed the exits of former national chairman, deputy national chairman and other two. It’s a big shock to the PDP. However, the party remains strong to sweep the election owing to APC’s failures,” Zainabari said.

The PDP publicity secretary alleged that the defectors took the decision to dump the party to escape the wrath of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and apparently to pacify the ruling party.

Adams Oshiomhole, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says Nigeria needs a president who can travel to any part of the world.

NAN reports that the former governor of Edo state on Friday alleged that Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), “can only travel to Dubai”.

He said President Muhammadu Buhari’s integrity cannot be faulted anywhere in the world, hence the need for Nigerians to vote him again.

Oshiomhole made the remark in Jos during the flag-off of the re-election bid of Simon Lalong, Plateau state governor.

The APC chairman said: “We have a president whose integrity cannot be faulted anywhere in the world, but the PDP has a presidential candidate who can only travel to Dubai.

“We know our developmental partners. They are not only in Dubai and so we must vote a president that can travel to any part of the world to lure investors into the country.”

Contrary to the assertion of the APC chairman, the PDP presidential candidate visited the UK in April 2018, where he spoke at Chatham House.

In view of the fast approaching February elections, Tunde Bakare, serving overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly (LRA), has raised his voice on how he told President Muhammadu Buhari that he (Bakare) will become the 16th president of Nigeria.

According to Bakare, President Buhari is the 15th president or head of state of the country, suggesting that he (Bakare) will be the next president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The fiery preacher and lawyer said he is currently building a political family from across the world, which would be deployed for future political aspirations.

Bakare had initially said in January 2018 that politics is not over for him, saying he would run for president in due course.
