Post on Soil Fertility
Most of the time, the average person treats the soil "like dirt". A wise farmer/rancher will care for the soil because he knows that man is dependent on the top 6 inches (15.2 centimeters) of soil. In the plant-animal-soil continuum, soil is often neglected because it does not indicate stress in an obvious way. Animals and plants show physical symptoms but the soil must be looked at more carefully to monitor good health.

Soil that is rich in nutrients is fertile. The expectation of growing plants as food for livestock must include the reality that plants will take nutrients out of the soil. Replacing nutrients is the basic goal of fertilization. Improper fertilization in the past has caused controversy, but the basic premise of fertilization is to replenish the soil.

There are three basic ways to replenish the nutrients removed from the soil. One way is to recycle nutrients, mainly by way of animal waste. This is a crucial method when discussing pastures. Another way to replenish soils is to obtain and apply fertilizer. And the third way is through microbial action such as nitrogen fixation. Forage-livestock producers should understand and utilize all three for maximum fertility with minimum cost and environmental damage.

Fertilization is an important issue because it is needed in order to produce enough food for the increasing population from the decreasing cultivated land, but too much or inappropriate use can be detrimental to the environment. Part of the debates about fertilizers discuss "man-made" or "chemical" fertilizers as compared to "organic farming". There are many misconceptions about all three terms. This module will look at the various aspects of fertilization so a broader understanding will lead to better fertilization and results.

Are you aware that your farm soil textural class determines the method of planting you will adopt when planting your TME419 cuttings??

The soil textural class can only be known if we conduct a soil test on your farm soil

Q: why did my TME419 cassava stem lose all it leaves and looking thin even at 11months??

ANS: This is a question a worried client ask me.
A lot of factors can lead to this conditions
1. Lack of adequate NPK in the soil and failure to apply at when due
2. Alowing the crop to compete with weed at infant
3. Not conducting soil analysis before planting
4. Not making good ridges or not making any at all
5. Not planting viable stem
The list is endless. But the botom line is you need adequate info before venturing into Crop cultivation. We can only prevent poor yield when the crop is yet to atain puberty.

AgricultureRe: Why Soil Analysis On That Farmland?? by Ken4agent(op): 6:39pm On Mar 08, 2018
Vital info to kenfarm esteem followers who may plan to cultivate TME 419 cassava stem intercrop with maize:

To obtain optimum crop yield, there is need to feed the crop with NPK (15:13:15) fertilizer two times. For maize, application could be done at 2 and 4 weeks after sowing of seeds. Cassava can be fertilized at 4 and 8 weeks after planting.

For inter cropping of maize and cassava at the same time, then some factors such as spacing, fertilizer application and direction of ridges needs to be properly considered.

It is advisable to plant maize first while cassava could be planted after 4 weeks of planting maize. This is because cassava is a heavy and aggressive feeder of NPK unlike maize.

However, I need to inform us that if you perform your soil test and the exchangeable cations and concentration of NPK is on critical level or above critical level, then you can plant both TME419 cassava stem and maize at the same time as there will be no competition for nutrient.

Your soil test outcome determines lots of decision to make on your crop/farm

Stop the contemporary fermer who believes soil test is never relevant and joint the conventional farmers who approve of soil test as first preplanting operation
Cheers!!

Planting maize first then planting cassava after 4 weeks will prevent competition in feeding between the cassava and Maize because all nutrient needed by maize will be taken up within 2 to 4 weeks after planting before the cassava develop root to take up all the available NPK in the farm soil.
AgricultureRe: FG Moves To Boost The Dairy Industry. by Ken4agent(m): 9:39pm On Mar 07, 2018
I think is time FG create a body who will be saddled with the responsibility of buying up farm produce from farmers to sell to consumers or exporters. This FG body will also moderate the price of farm produce preventing unhealthy competition.

Obviously most graduate/youth are now going into crop cultivation but there is still the challenge of who to sell the farm produce to, when and how?

So we need FG to come in and set up a designated selling point where farmers work in with their farm produce and work out with their cash

This is the suggestion of kenfarm
AgricultureRe: Hybrid Plantain suckers / How to set up plantain farm by Ken4agent(m): 9:06pm On Mar 07, 2018
To clear one acre of land by manual method, you should prepare for N15K TO N20K, depending on area. Tell the laborer to burn it for you or they should sweep it, if you are doing the clearing during raining season to enable you to plant properly.

The above info copied from your blog, can u link me up with the fellow who will collect 15k to 20k to clear one acre??

Best way to confirm if your soil is good for the crop you want to plant is by carrying out a soil test using the volumetric analysis method .......make no mistakes
AgricultureRe: A Step-by-step Procedures To Establishing Our Newly Acquired Farm Land. by Ken4agent(op): 8:40pm On Mar 07, 2018
One of the dreaded natural environmental factor which effect plantain plantation is STRONG WIND. Up to date there haven't been anay remedy for wind destroying plantain suckers. It appear we could only plant tree crop in strategic location in the farm. But how do we know which direction the wind will be blowinghuh

Our experimental farm experience a strong wind and about 15 plantain suckers already bearing bunches was pulled down by wind cutting the sucker from the middle. It sad but we could only thank Oluwa the mortality rate was not much.

The motarlity rate will have increased if we did not make heaps round the base of all the plantain suckers.

If you haven't heap sand round the base of your plantain sucker, the time to do that is now!!!
