One of the dreaded natural environmental factor which effect plantain plantation is STRONG WIND. Up to date there haven't been anay remedy for wind destroying plantain suckers. It appear we could only plant tree crop in strategic location in the farm. But how do we know which direction the wind will be blowing

Our experimental farm experience a strong wind and about 15 plantain suckers already bearing bunches was pulled down by wind cutting the sucker from the middle. It sad but we could only thank Oluwa the mortality rate was not much.

The motarlity rate will have increased if we did not make heaps round the base of all the plantain suckers.

If you haven't heap sand round the base of your plantain sucker, the time to do that is now!!!

Such error happen all the time in all the teaching hospitals in Nigeria especially the one in Ibadan, but Doctors in Niaja never admit they make mistakes. In some cases, farmers will usually like to Rake the farm to remove all dead weed cum burnt sticks but we usually advise that the dead weeds and the burnt sticks should be left on the farm land to decay. The more they decay, the more microbial activities increase which inderectly increase the organic matter concentration on the soil. When the soil organic matter increase, reuptake of nutrient increase and Evapotranspiration reduce leading to increase in moisture content of the soil.

Hence, do not clean up the farm land completely with Rake. Inorganic manure enrich the soil over a long period of time.

Q: Is it save to plant TME419 stem cutting now?
ANS: If the soil is well moist, it save. But the rain has not wet, penetrate and soften the soil enough, it may not be save to plant. The frequency of rain in your farm location determines when to plant.....there ere lots of dengers planting your seed in a dry hot soil

At least, NASU should suspend this strike for a period ranging from 2weeks to 4weeks. A lot of things seems OK but is truly not. JAMB will be written this month of March, first semester exams for most universities will be written this month, NYSC Batch A stream 1&2 registration will commence this month of which most schools like UNIBEN has not cleared their graduated students. Most graduates who are processing international scholarships can't proceed because they can't access their transcripts. The list is endless.. NON ACADEMIC SERVICES IN SCHOOLS ARE ENORMOUS. please NASU suspend this strike for some weeks at this time. This government don't care about any of us, and we can't keep punishing ourselves because of the carefree government.

How do I ensure uniform growth of my plantain sucker leading to uniform harvest so I could recoup my cash all at the same time??

ANS:
It almost impossible to have a uniform sucker growth and uniform harvest because of factors which we shall discuss later. However, kenfarm only advise plantain farmers to adopt a method called Calibrating the plants (Suckers)
Calibrating involves grouping plants (suckers) together according to size and weight. Only plants (Suckers) with similar characteristics should be planted together. With this method, farmers can classify the suckers as they mature and harvest the plantain with similar size together. Q:
What precautions must be taken to ensure proper planting of the suckers??

ANS:
Precautionary measure to be taking when planting are numerous. Revisit the fist page of this post for few of it and consult our eBook for detail.
However, While planting, make sure the bottom of the pit does not fill with water. If
necessary, mix black earth with 10 to 15 kg of compost. Before planting,
add 15 to 20 cm black earth to the bottom of the pit. The plants should
be placed in the pit with their scars facing the same direction in order
to facilitate their care and propping. Planting PIF plants is very delicate.
Make sure each one is planted so that the collar is visible. Pile up a little
soil around each plant and avoid planting them too deep.
