Yesterday' there was a sad news posted on this platform about a Nigerian man people claimed killed his wife over children's benefits in Germany.
According to a very reliable source, the man is an igbo man, not a benin man, while the lady is an Urobo woman and not a benin woman neither .He brought her from Nigeria to Germany and he didn't kill her because of children benefits as earlier speculated. They have three children of which the eldest is eight years old.
According to the same source, the ordeal started shortly after the woman collected the sum of three thousand Euros from the contribution union popularly known as "Osusu ".which the woman gave to the man to save in their Nigeria savings bank account for their upcoming marriage which is suppose to take place in December this year. But things went south when the woman told her husband that she urgently need some part of the money to help solve her family problems in Nigeria.
Her husband refused and tells her that he already spent the money on the house that he is building in Nigeria for the betterment and future of them and their children. That was what prompted a heated and serious argument between the man and the deceased that led the man taking a kitchen knife and stabbed the woman to death.

Firstly, how valuable is the woman’s body and her sexuality? A shekel weights about 11 grams and would be worth about $10 in our modern economy. But how much was a shekel worth more than 3000 years ago?

In the book of Numbers, when each firstborn in the nation of Israel was redeemed, life is valued at 5 shekels (Numbers 3:44-47). Yet in Deuteronomy, the woman’s body and purity is valued at 50 shekels - 10 times the life of a Israelite. If a slave was wounded by a bull, then there was a payment of 30 shekels of silver and the bull, a very expensive creature, had to be killed (Exodus 21:31-33). How valuable is the woman’s body? More valuable than life.

But what about the forced marriage? Again this is an act of protection. In the ancient world, if a woman was not a virgin then no man would marry her. She is tainted and so her life and hopes and dreams of a family and a community are broken and smashed. She would remain a spinster or may have to turn to prostitution with no husband to care and provide for her. The demand that the man marry the woman protects her. If he takes her virginity then he must marry her. Her sexuality is so essential to her personhood and womanhood that if a man has sex with her he is committed to her for the rest of his life and hers. An incredible value is placed on sex and a woman’s rights to her body.

Surely the consequences would make a man think more than twice before raping a woman. It will cost him all and probably more if it is discovered.

But it doesn’t stop there. The payment of the shekels of silver acts as a public acknowledgement that the man did wrong and violated this woman. The way he treated her would always be known and so the way he treated her in the future would always be under scrutiny. This would again protect the woman.

The Bible doesn’t legitimise rape. It protects sexuality and the value of sex in society. It protects a woman’s body and her rights to her body. It values a woman’s body at 10 times the value of a life

Your opening phrase has an error...you wrote Pride price so correct that....but the irony is that it should actually be tagged Pride price and not bride price cos These days there is no pride in most ladies we pay a huge price to marry.

Further more...the original purpose of bride price in the bible was to serve as punishment for rape and it was Abraham who first gave gifts to the family of his son's wife to be Rebecca who was a virgin at that time.

appreciate your response bro. But i like to inform you that benin film academy is not a training ground to produce benin films.not at all. The standard is English movies of hollywood pedigree and style. The reason is because the pioneer is an indigene of the land and is interested on giving back his immediate society which is benin city Edo state. To create a state of the arts academy that resounds from the state to the world, thus Benin film academy. And trust me, talking about indigenious benin films are even doing great... U should go watch some. You will change your thoughts.

Nice one, at least for using the word"ACADEMY"instead of WOOD "But the problem is that they swear too much in Benin movies, i once saw a Benin movie with translation, i was like ' all this swear /Courses / in one movie! Vulgar words were been use like it's the norm of the day. In the same movie a woman was swearing for her two years old daughter, telling her that she will fall and die and that her spirit will also get lost in limbo, and curses like this was consistence through out the movie.
Then i asked myself "What the f#@k did i just watched.
So,i brought out the CD from the DVD player and broked it to pieces. Since then anywhere i see people watching Benin movie, i turn my eyes away because i don't want my eyes to see ABOMINATION.

This has notting to do with weather the religious leaders are able to faithfully carry out their duties or not, this is religious bigotry. I have strong convictions that the bill was passed not only to reduce the numbers of Christian leaders in the north,but to also decimate the importancy of Christianity in that part of the country.
The freedom of Religion and it's leaders is enshrined in our constitution which so many Nigerians across generations has put their lives on the line to protect. We the bona-fide citizens of the federal Republic of Nigeria hereby say NO to religious bigotry.
