Tony Spike: When I served in Enugu over 5 years ago, there was no single bakery in Oji River LGA. They had to rely on supplies from Enugu city...I kept on wondering why no smart-ass can set up a bakery there and make his dough. The only thing in abundance in Enugu is alcohol, especially beer. No wonder the largest brewery in West Africa is located right at the heart of Nkwo area (9th mile)...

4chi: Don't blame the ajokutamamumis. It is an historical fact that the ibos are predominantly cave and village dwellers. It was the colonialists that built their so called Enugu from scratch! 95% of iboland still comprises of hamlets and villages up till today. Don't blame them when they hold on to little Enugu as "the pride of the east" that is the best they have let's humour them and keep their illusion alive.

enugu was in complete ashes after d war.
It started frm destruction of nsukka and s UNN. Den enugu.
Enugu was built from d scratch frm 1970 by igbos.
But ibadan for eg had no war on it yet, its a huge slum.

Let's do a comparative analysis: in the UK, when Manchester started thriving again after the commonwealth games, loads of people from London moved there. Same for Milton Keynes and a lot of other cities in the UK. In the US, when there's reverse migration from up North and New York to the South (most people moved from the South up North in the 60's and 70's when the economic situation in the South was terrible). However, how come the opposite is the case in Nigeria? We keep hearing about Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Calabar and even Abuja - but those places look like ghost towns compared to Lagos. Why is that?

we are not talking abt lagos( which yorubas contributed the least), we are talking abt oyo state n d rest of SW.

Name other places...in Enugu the way you can mention Sango Otta...Ijebu Ode ....Agbara...Sagamu, all these places are as developed as the state capital of Ogun state.


Never...never compare a one-town state in the SE with any state in the SW....they are not and will never be in the same league.

Anambra state has more urban centres more dan any state in Nigeria, aside lagos.
Almost all their villages have great looking houses and look urban enough.
What is sango otta to Onitsha, aba or nnewi? Onitsha is sb's village o.
Lets get get down to those towns and analyse their prosperity, u will see that SW ppl are endangered species.
I mean there are no SW cities as comely as owerri n enugu.
None with d ingenuity of aba and nnewi.
None as prosperous as Onitsha.

Eastern Nig villages have more affluent houses than even d cities.
SW villages are what they are. Wretched.

Where do i start?
1) Enugu boasts of indigenous ventures and industries( @ emene esp) while oyo has mostly foreign and non-yoruba enterprises.
Thats y d GDP doesnt translate to the low purchasing power of the SW indigenes.
2) who d hell compares a city to a slum? Ibadan, d capital is d largest slum in d nation.
Enugu is largely fine, serene in many areas, and bustling in many others; has d lowest crime rate in d country ( according to IGP Abubakar 2013).
3) As i was saying, the standard of living in Enugu state is higher dan dat in Oyo. Oyo has many indigenes living as agberos, it also has more indigenous almajiris and mentally retarded ppl more dan any state in d South.
Enugu has finer houses owned by indigenes n oda igbos, unlike retarded structures called houses in d SW.
The majority of fine houses in ibadan are public buildings.
Ventures like shopping malls thrive in Enugu unlike ibadan where Shoprite is currently regretting its existence there.
Prior to shoprite, Enugu had malls like Eastern Shop, Roban Stores which are owned by igbos.
Shoprite, KFC , etc are not owned by yorubas. See una life.
4) In summary, GDP doesnt translate to purchasing power. France, spain might not be as big as Niger Republic or Former Sudan but we all know which nation is better off.

In your own understanding, which do you think would yield the most taxes to govt? Is it Polo Mall as it stands now (with Shoprite, Game, Genesis cinema, etc) or that conglomerate of beer parlours and joints which hitherto occupied that space?

Same would apply to that Old Park area. They would lease it to the better bidder that would guarantee steady returns, in this case, another shopping mall.

It's the way I see it though.
