Politics › Lagos, Rivers, Enugu Lead In IGR Generation In 2013 by ketoprofen(op): 8:40am On Sep 18, 2014 |
Lagos State increased its lead among the 36 states of the federation in the area of internally generated revenue (IGR) in 2013, generating about N384.2 billion compared to N219.2 billion in the previous year. This was followed by Rivers State which also witnessed increased revenue generation from about N66.2 billion in 2012 to about N87.9 billion the following year. In third position was Enugu State with about N20.2 billion in 2013, up from about N12.2 billion in 2012. According to selected states' IGR figures for 2013 which was released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) yesterday, Edo State’s IGR increased by about N19.2 million to N18.89 billion in 2013 compared to an estimated N18.88 billion in 2012. However, while Zamfara State also witnessed an increase in IGR from about N2.5 billion in 2012 to about N3 billion in 2013, Taraba State's IGR dropped marginally to about N3.3 billion in 2013, compared to about N3.4 billion in 2012. IGR has become a critical fiscal enhancement tool for states in recent times amid dwindling oil revenue from the Federation Account. Anambra State’s IGR increased to about N8.7 billion in 2013 compared to about N7.6 billion the previous year, while Akwa Ibom also had positive yields for the period recording about N15.3 billion from about N13.5 billion in 2012. IGR for Kwara State improved from about N11.3 billion in 2012 to about N13.8 billion in 2013, while that of Kogi State also went up from about N3.1 billion in 2012 to about N5 billion in the period under review. Bayelsa State’s IGR stood at about N10.5 billion in 2013 from about N3.6 billion in 2012. However, IGRs for Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, the three North-east states that have witnessed the highest levels of insecurity, as well as Kano, were not provided for in 2013. Also left out of the update were Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Sokoto, Jigawa, Imo, Gombe, Ekiti and Ebonyi States. Others whose IGR were omitted for the period under review were Delta, Cross River, Benue, Bauchi and Abia States. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/lagos-rivers-enugu-generated-the-most-igr-in-2013/189296/?utm_content=bufferb8975&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer |

centje: The post below, by cjrane, highlighted a point i made initially. When we say federal presence, it's not whether the federal capital is physically sited in a place. Nigeria saw the mistake we made in planning of lagos as capital and didn't want to repeat the same in Abuja. How often do you hear that a factory, refinery etc been sited in Abuja...the design is to make Abuja cool, and to have an administrative feel. Again US has a different system from ours. In our own system, too much power is concentrated in the centre.
The point i was trying to let you see is this. Take a closer look at Chime's projects. You did see a government trying to create a better environment to attract investments. Imagine if such a person has more power and fund at his disposal. He made a good decision, With the presence of international airport, Enugu needed to be revived for the potential investors to take the state serious. For instance, I can still remember how refuse dumps filled streets in enugu, but now you hardly see such.
Investors don't put their money where they are not assured of securities and other facilities necessary for smooth running of business. And it's the job of government to provide such, and watch investors come in. We are talking about Enugu state here not just the capital. The state has potentials for agricultural industries for eg. Remember we still have UDI, awgu, nsukka, nkanu to develop economically. It should be in such a way that you can stay in Ezeagu and still make mad money other than moving all the way to Enugu to get a good job. Obviously, Enugu indigenes don't have this flair for investing at home like their anambra sister state indigenes. That too should be worked on |

donroxy: There are what we call ''field of life'' and each nation must be well represented in each field in order to maintain balance ...
If those with certificate are unproductive, then who would you blame ... ?
The knowledge or the personality who failed to use the knowledge ?
@one point in your life , you are an apprentice of somebody abi you wanna tell me you just jump into your business without getting education @least from those that have been there ?
If you now failed as an individual to effectively used the knowledge they gave to you in building your business to success , who do you blame ?
You see, you are still not thinking straight and this must affect your business no doubt :
why can't Coscharis also go for PhD and do for himself what those PhD are doing for him?
Why do Coscharis need those PhDs if education is over hyped, what are those PhDs doing for Coscharis that he could not do himself ?
why PhD, why not someone like you dominating the fron, middle and back of Coscharis?
If you have an higher IQ, you would know that Coscharis is wiser than you in multiple folds and that is why He is Coscharis and you are whatever you are !!
PhDs are philosophers , they are highly oriented in research and problem solving skills and ability to contribute to knowledge by relating with any philosophical issues bordering on problems within and beyond their field of study as well as their area of specialisation !!
In life , there is what they called Division of Labour and no man can actually has it all .....
The work requirement of a PhD is so voluminous that he would never be able to concentrated on developing an enterprenuership venture unless such is an academic venture .....
Also, Coscharis is a busy man in his own right that he will never be able to concentrate on his PhD ....
You either keep your PhD certificate and get far away from academic/professional matters and nurture your business to success or you abandoned your business , employ someone to manage it for you and go back to school for your PhD
it is all about Interest and passion and it is all about where you think you wanna be to contribute to the development of your economy !!!
If you wanna know what PhDs innovated/Created, you have to go and do research in Nigerian Universities and see for yourself ......
It is easier to get drop from school and start a business ..... Go and ask how easier it is to pass through 3years of Academic Excellence and a Unique Research that must be contributing to the present level of knowledge !!!
The last time we checked the statistics the number of people that didn't go to school are higher than the number of people that does ........
Nigeria is one of the educationally backward country in the world
It is people like you who later in life find the reason to own a particular certificate and do one crash programme that are responsible for Nigerian Backwardness ....... You are the one responsible for unemployment ........
Some one like you can never go to school for knowledge but certificate and going by your IQ, it is people like you who would stole Billions of Naira .......
Check google and see for yourself how educationally backward Nigerian is and you can still opened your mouth and say few ones that are educated among 170million population are the ones responsible for our backwardness ! The PhD holders and others are his servants, simple. He is their chairman. As for many Nigerian PhD holders, they haven't been innovative. Nigeria has produced many engineers and technicians, yet we are depending on other countries for products made by even children. And you think Nigerian education is not about certificates . Tell me how Nigeria has been changed from these PhD holders? In Nigeria, u are schooled to be employed instead of to be creative and better the environment . Totally abysmal. You think that Isaac newton discovered the law of gravity by. PhD? In fact, u think the wright brothers invented planes after they burnt midnight candles reading? Was Shakespeare a graduate when he started writing wonders? Achebe had written his novel, things fall apart, as an undergraduate, a book that would later be the Africa's foremost literary piece, the most read African book in the world . How many of our graduates, phd holders are that creative? Our education is becoming overrated, today English graduates are thinking of being employed only in schools, embassies where they would be doing stipulated jobs that even an SS3 students can do. So bad. U are not sure of being richer than non graduates, you are still not sure of creating more impact than them. |

IGBOSON1: ^^^I think Lagos shared the same fears that Ebonyi had: that they presently have some measure of independence, and if we revert back to regionalism (6 regions) they may become subjugated and their resources carted off to the regional capital where their 'noisy' and 'stronger' neighbouring kinsfolk will either take more than their fair share, or sideline them in decision making through sheer strength of their numbers!
I know Ebonyians are aware some Igbos think they're more 'Igbo' then others, and they're not having it! So, without the federalism, is ebonyi feeling superior to other igbos? Which resources will be carted away from her if regionalism were to take place? Their decision is very stupid .U are not developed under the status quo, you still don't want to change systems . That's rubbish.Like governor like NC representatives |

oduastates: He lost me on that NC thing. Lagos refusal of regionalism was tactical than any thing else. In a few years time ,after the founding of odua states , you will know the reason why. I am sure most people here cannot even name the delegates from Lagos . They were probably the most intellectually equipped in that whole conference. All the same , good article from agbakoba y did Lagos refuse? |

GreyBlood: Education is nothing but a feeble rehash of already established theories. You are forced to believe theories put forward by others thereby making your thinking limited.
Have you ever wondered why most people don't perform well in school? It's because they are forced to think, reason, understand and try to adopt the beliefs of other people. The best way to be the best is to be yourself, but forcing you to be or think exactly like the other person will only make you an imitation. Who taught those people we are learning from? Does it mean that they are the only intelligent people the world has got? Does it mean we can't use our intelligence in different ways and attain good results?
I could remember when I was in sch, there was a guy in my class who hates all these long calculations in further maths. He went and devised/propounded a formular he will be using; it's shorter and simpler but our teacher always cancels his works and warned him never to use his own formular again. Now who will give such guy a chance to prove his own intelligence? Sb will finish cramming all the calculus and integration, only to find out that it will be totally useless later. He or she will resort to tnz he laughed at while schooling: businesses, bead making, tailoring, cooking, etc. School sure wastes time for many people |

donroxy: This is the simple reason why Nigeria is backward and Nigerian youths are hardly found in the scheme of events in the world except few exceptional ones !!
Just look @ your reverse way of thinking ?
It is one thing to create a business , it is another thing to manage business to success ...... And it is indeed an entirely another thing to sustain the successs of a business over a long period of time and another thing entirely to manage the failures in business
Coscharis created a business, Innoson created a business, Bill gates , Osewa, Steve Job etc .....
But the success of the business is not exceptionally theirs , it is the success of the staffs , each and every member of the organisation share the success and the failure together !!!
Ehehn, so tell me Coscharis has been employing primary 3 drop-outs and not PhD anymore ...... The whole of Coscharis should have been filled with Primary 3 drop-out na , if education is over-hyped ..... Yeye people !
As for why are PhD serving primary 3 drop-out ? .... It is a question that could be asked by a Nigerian so remote from civilisation ....
There is nobody serving anybody perse, we are all businessman .... Coscharis is also serving some people by rendering services to them and they pay him .........
Innoson has people he is serving by selling suvs to them and they pay him
Same goes with bill gates ,he has a market he served and get paid for Microsoft Softwares
Steve jobs also ....
PhD also has the market they served and got paid .....
No one is doing it for free, we are all doing it to sustain.....
It is not a slave trade ....... and you are still nurturing a slave mentality ..... .....
We are all servants of one another in this world but that you get paid makes you a master too !!
where Coscharis think his brain doesn't reach in terms of expertise , he will call his eggheaders ''PhD Holders'' to come and provide ''professional and academic insight'' into his business problem/success !!
We all get paid and that is business !
Now, if you failed to use your certificate/knowledge to eat or do business then that is your own failure in life not anyone .....
Coscharis is definitely using his business acumen brain to eat while PhDs are also using their brain to eat ......
Everything borders on food and making this world a happier sojourn for ourself !!!
....... How will I ever give personality like you a contract , imagine we are in a business retreat and you are speaking this way , all prospective clients will turn away from you cuz No-one wants to do business with an ill-educated person !!!
I have so many illiterates businessmen!!!! around me , and majority of them usually tell me, their business would have gone more better and higher if they go to school ......
Without some certain certified academic degree from recognised institutions some certain organisation won't do business with you and if your competitors should acquire this qualifications , then your business will suffer defeat !!!
Business is more than this yeye one una dey do for streets and market place .... By the time you reach level of Coscharis,Innoson and Bill gates , you will know what school is cuz right now, your brain doesn't know what school is !! keep deceiving yourself. One is entrepreneur, the others are servants. I asked u a question, why can't the said PhD holders form similar enterprises instead of coming to do functions stipulated by a sch drop out? What has our so called PhD holders created or innovated by themselves that can make Nigeria rub shoulders with the rest of nations, aside some very few people tho? The op said university education esp the one we do in Nigeria is not the only way to success and logically he is right. The reason why Nigeria is backward as you said is not due to people that didn't go to the university but the unproductivity of those that did. Its all about certificates here. The over reliance on university education as the only means to success has rendered many people paupers, Imagine you berating people that do business in the market place, many of them have more investments and live more comfortably than the so called PhD holders. Its just not the only way to success. What of PhD holders that run errands, going from place to place marketing drugs for people at paltry salaries under hot sun? |

donroxy: You should have asked coshcaris why he failed to employ primary 3 drop-out like him to manage his business !
Coshcaris knows the value of Education , and you think coscharis dumb head brought him to where he is , hell no, it is those PhD holders he recruited that brought him to where he is and He pay !! And who told u He doesn't employ primary 3 dropouts? if the PhD peepz are that wonderful in managing businesses, why are they serving a primary 3 drop out. If he had gone to sch to study medicine or computer science, he wouldn't have been this successful. And who told you his business innovations are not from him, you should read up Cosmas Maduka for starters. The moral here is that univ education is not the only means to success. Your brain and ingenuity matters, unfortunately Nigerian education doesn't equip people to be innovative or creative, yet we overflog it like hell, just get a job in bank or somewhere and perform laid down functions, that's all, no addition, no subtraction . No great nation was formed that way. Here, you get your masters only to use it and become a servant! imagine u thinking coscharis is a dumb head, innoson too is a dumb head, bill gates nah block head, name them....... shymexx: You can't count the money you can't see, you have to go with facts based on global rankings and traffic.
I hate to say this, Seun might also be making tons of money from politicians in Nigeria, due to how partial he's towards a particular party. So, once you start counting money you can't see, then Seun should be making ten times whatever money that blogger is making.
However, based on facts available to everyone - it's not even close. Nairaland adverts are charged at low rates per week. Am not saying its a bad idea tho. LIB is the advert destination and event coverage point in Nigeria, and charges are made on the spot not for a whole week. And who told u seun is being paid, doesn't he have the right to like a party on his own? Forget the insinuations he likes PDP, must it be that he was paid to like it? Linda is neutral and u might even get money or bribe from both sides if u are neutral. Kind of each side trying to buy you over, that's y Linda posts good and bad news from both sides. Don't get me wrong, nl is more interesting but lib is far more lucrative, cos the latter is run strictly as a business. Its not uncommon to see ' how to place your ad on nl' filling spaces for actual ads. Lib doesn't beg for adverts as it stands. Let's leave sentiments, this topic is poised to make nl great if only segun utilizes the opinions. Its not meant to bash nl. Traffic from members doesn't mean more money. |

shymexx: Lmao!
You honestly think spamming gazillion of ads on a page makes you more money, no? For the gazillion of ads on that blog, it's one page view regardless of the number of ads shown per page. How many top-earning websites have gazillion of ads on their homepage? Most don't even have any visible one - and most times when they do, it's probably just one or two.
And nairaland isn't your typical forum, it's a news-portal with a lot of miscellaneous things meet forum - with more potentials than most forums. Let the traffic and the income it generates daily based on proven FACTS be the judge. Not some lousy claims by a duffer.
You probably don't like Seun - and I'm not a big fan of the guy and his methods as well. However, you can't knock his hustle and be oblivious to facts, even when they're staring at you in the face.
Er, a good comparison that will correlate with this one would be to compare huffingtonpost.com to bossip.com. Despite bossip.com having gazillion of ads on it, it will never make as much money as huffingtonpost with the 0 or 1 ad on it (huffingtonpost stopped being a blog time ago, it's a news portal now - while bossip is a blog). No. People pay much to place ads and events on LIB How can u say I don't like seun? We dey struggle for anything? NL as a website is more informative and all but LIB is more lucrative for now, though nairaland as a website has more potentials |

shymexx: Over 3.5 million to nairaland compared to about 40,000 for that blog.
And by the time the 150 active users and 200 guests on this page finish viewing this thread, refreshing every two minute to view new comments - this page alone should have more hits than what the blog gets in a day.
So, basically, just one advert on this page alone, should make more money for Seun than all the adverts on that blog combined today. Let's not keep over flogging this issue. Linda makes more money than seun. A forum is different from a blog and shouldn't be compared in terms of operations |

EmoBoy: If seun is happy and content with the way nairaland is and the revenues he earns from the business, I see no reason why we should drink panadol for his headache.
Owning a blog and owning a forum are two different things. Forums don't make much money like blogs (unless they're heavily monetised). Top blogging sites earn hundreds of thousands of revenues every month while forums usually struggle with less. The reasons linda makes more money than seun is not far fetched.
Forum users generate the content and not usually the owners. It is usually we nairalanders who source for news and information to post on this site, all seun does it to regulate and moderate. When last did he post any news concerning any topic? But linda ikeji sources for information and stories herself. This makes her an authority. The same cannot be said of nairaland where every tom, dick and harry can post anything he/she likes.
Linda Ikeji is also a blog that gossips about your favorite celebs and personalities. This attracts people more than anything.
Linda Ikeji is more social and talks about her personal life some of the time. She is also a woman and she's cute, hence people will patronize her more.
It is easier to navigate though linda ikeji's blog than through a forum like nairaland.
Linda has more flexible advertising options for businesses than nairaland. That means she monetizes her site better than seun.
There are more reasons, but I'll stop for now and like I said before, if seun is happy with the way nairaland is and the money he makes, then we shouldn't complain about it.
However, as owner of the most visited indigenous site in Nigeria, Seun is terribly messing up. Seun no vex, but thats my opinion. |

It's not a bad thing to read books, it makes you smarter, but make sure you do so under appropriate conditions. Make sure the area is well lit, put the book at an appropriate distance from your eyes and make sure the print is large enough that you don't have to strain your eyes.
