Most customs and cultures need to adapt to modern times especially those ones that pose serious health risks (to humans). Your Dad is right here. It might sound ridiculous to you but people (Nigerians) should learn how to read manuals no matter how simple the machine might be to operate.

The manufacturer did not put those stuffs there for play. There might be a certain operating temperature, voltage, current, frequency, angle e.t.c that you might need to tune the machine to for optimum performance or to extend the life of the machine/device.
