Vesment:Best bet would be to convert to CAD in Canada at a forex booth. We use Califorex. Their rates are far better than banks. But you might want to monitor the CAD/USD performance and change when best value is in the offing. 12 Likes 19 Shares |

shaddie: He can give up his permanent residency status voluntarily without affecting his dependents in any way. However, if he wishes not to give it up entirely, he can still try to meet the requirements needed to sustain his status by having a cumulative stay of at least 2yrs in 5yrs. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/5781ETOC.asp

impish:Thanks for mentioning the ABCmouse, I'll definitely explore that. I am also homeschooling my 3.5yr old daughter. She'll be 4 in January so the 31st Dec cut-off is a hard pinch on us. She has been attending preschool while I did my masters. Now I'm done and job hunting, we do our bit at home using some Kindergarten workbooks that are based on the Canada curriculum as a guide. So far she's keeping interested and learning. All the best to every man and woman on this journey of settling-down-in-a- new-country. 7 Likes 1 Share |

Thanks Proddey for the tips you shared. I'm preparing to do this cert but my liver isn't strong yet. I have the 35hrs course activity and 5yrs projectized work experience. I reckon I could replicate your study strategy. Let's talk more on your email. 1 Like |

BE811APP: Yes kids also undergo medicals. My daughter was only 1yr and half when we did ours. But for kids the rate is about half the adult rate because they only conduct physical examination for them. 1 Like |

SAMUELS3: It depends...If you're employed or running a profitable registered business then you can. All the SOA in my application had just N500k cash put together. the rest of funds were in different forms of financial investment. Of course they have to be investments that can easily be liquidated or whose maturity periods are before the commencement of your studies. On the other hand if there's no seeming source of the invested funds, then it all becomes dicey. |

ikem01: Congrats bro! Happy for you. Did I just read that you paid 2yrs tuition in full? Tell me that was to facilitate your application approval. Not to question your choices but I think you can structure your course registration to finish your graduate studies in a year (3sessions) or at most 4 sessions instead of six (2yrs)and save your money. 1 Like |

GrandCommander: Bulk as in...wholesale? Hehehe...I don't know how much that bulk is but there are African stores here and there. Their stuff can be pricy but you won't even need to get most things from them. Other grocery stores also stock our normal food like Indomie brand of noodles, evaporated milk, corn meals, Ovaltine/Milo brands of beverages, yam, cassava tubers, our Naija kind of red-hot pepper etc, always remember to check for Afro-Carribean sections or International food sections in stores like Walmart or FoodBasics or Freshco. Eventually, All you might need from African stores are just things like crayfish and palm oil. 2 Likes |

The rate is crazy o! I've been charged as high as 198/cad. Does any one know any other way out of this mess? Can one buy forex from black market and do wire transfer to Canadian account? Same ish because the black market rates are as high. Only way is to get a good job and start earning CAD. |

gabrola: These items should pass (hopefully) try not to buy the Knorr Chicken cubes, just buy the classic one. They seem to have this phobia with the term 'chicken'. Even with indomie noodles, I had to empty every pack into ziploc bags cos of the chicken written on the packs. Eventually they didn't search my food luggage. Just a precautionary measure in order not to trigger their chicken by-product phobia. And label each package to make searching easier for them (in case they choose to). Good luck! 3 Likes 1 Share |

Hello people, thank God the anxiety of preparation and travel is over. We arrived Ottawa in one piece. A quick travel tip now I've got some time...for people hoping to pack food stuff from home, try to read the policies very well and contact others who had travelled. Any food item you think might trigger suspicion, do well to empty them in ziploc bags. That speaks Transparency! I read somewhere on this thread where someone advised against declaring food items in your luggage. I'll like to counter that. Can you imagine what your fate would be if they decide to check? I declared mine, but had to underline the specific food items to avoid generalising their understanding. When immigrations/customs checked my form at POE, I was only asked what the food items were, I just said meal supplements crayfish, soybean powder, blah blah and I was passed. 7 Likes |

I beg to digress a bit here... Ladies/gents, the word is spelt 'defer' which means to postpone to a further period and not 'differ' which is a root word in difference. I see some use this in here repeatedly and I worry some may even apply for deferement using the wrong spelling. 7 Likes |

shodexy: I think it's because Project Management alone is quite small and narrow to be a standalone course. Why don't you look at Engineering Management, you'll have project management 1 and 2 as course modules as well as other operations management courses. You can check Uni Ottawa and University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). |

honax: Your major setback was the POF. From what you listed here, $13k school fees+$14k draft and N2m closing balance all sum up to about N6.5m. That's way too small for you and your girl. I applied with my daughter too. And we had nothing less than N18m. You need to boost yours. These VOs know that child care in Canny no be moin-moin. Day care alone per day will cost nothing less than $40/day, not to talk of housing suitable for a child. I know how many cheap apartments I've tried to engage landlords for, only to be told that they're not child friendly. So here's your task; make another budget with minimum monthly rent of $750, day care minimum monthly cost of $900, then feeding, clothing and miscellaneous at a rate by your discretion. Put your entire budget in a spreadsheet, each cost with associated CAD and Naira equivalent and the total fund available. You should be having funds exceeding your projected budget. What program are you going for and what's the duration. 6 Likes 1 Share |
