The SW leaders are Nigeria's new separatists, as for agenda; how about Tambuwal? This is a time we should all have drawn together to easily make far ranging and fundamental changes to the constitution; but that task has been made exponentially more difficult by the SW leaders with their backing of Tambuwal. If at all we can realise true federalism, passage of the PIB etc, then we'd has passed through the eye of a needle.

Tambuwal is actually a non-issue, a PDP member supported by the opposition so as to strengthen their hands and affirm their independence in opposition?

Calling that a separaratist move is not correct, in light of the major areas they can agree on, it's like burning down the family house because your girlfriend hugged your brother.

I'm not holding brief for ACN leaders, since we are not inner party member, let's go by their rhetoric; I'm glad you mentioned PIB

PIB as originally intended cannot be opposed by an ACN or SW whose chieftains have constantly championed resource control.

Land use repeal (which will greatly benefit GEJ and his SS kinsmen cannot be opposed by SW leaders, even Tinubu utterances shows his rhetorical support for a more egalitarian land ownership regime.

True Federalism : State Police, local control of ports, stronger State Law and regional autonomy ( which lagos is a major champion of, they actually walk the talk) weaker central Government. E.tc


All these plus more have featured in the rhetoric of these same leaders from the SW, and the SS / SE if I must add

I think the disagreement and political power tussle over who should lead the house of Rep pales in comparison with the agreement they have on these more fundamental issues.

I think the bigger question now is ; Why ain't we having an FG initiated national dialogue on these issues? Who are the people blocking it, what can we do together to defeat them?

Which ideas and agendas are championed by the SS/SE, but opposed by the SW?

When you talk about interests, do you mean wider Nigerian interests, economic interests or SE/SS interests? Each of those items demands a uniquely tailored answer.

But you are right, each of the constituent parts of Nigeria need to define what they want so we can agree on those mutual interests.

In April, my hope was that by December we would have started the discussion, but as things stand now, only Boko-Haram people are talking - with bombs and threats, it's like we are just reacting to the sound of their voice.

It will be very dangerous if these neo-cons clear table for us, the discussion will probably be concluded in Langley. I'm not sure we want that at all.

The very articulate Feyi Fawehinmi (of the "Dele Momodu your s/h/i/t is weak" fame ) wrote this on his blog late yesterday.

It's like he peered into my mind and expressed my thoughts, I just had to share it here. I agree with almost everything he said, especially the part in bold.

I'm not big on superstition and I don't strongly believe in Karma, but I've read a bit of human history to conclude that when a society covers up injustice, especially gross injustice, it hardly progresses.

We have a lot of healing to do in Nigeria, the earlier we start the better for us and coming Generations

It was rather fortuitous that I happened to listen to the excellent Jerome Okolo give at a talk today at London's TEDxEuston. His life story seemed to be one of a young man popping up in the right places but always at the wrong time.
And having witnessed the tragedies of so many different peoples, he then began to confront the unspoken tragedy of his own country; the Nigerian Civil War.

The man who came to symbilise that war, perhaps more than any other Nigerian, Dikedioramma Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu, passed on today at the age of 78. 

Personally, when it comes to leading your people to war, I set the bar for leadership at Abraham Lincoln, a man who understood that more strength was required in not pulling a trigger when you had a gun in your hand than in doing the obvious. I am not sure that Colonel Ojukwu fully took account of the risks before leading his people to a war for which they paid an outrageous price.

But one must never fall into the temptation of blaming the shortness of a woman's skirt for the violation she suffered. What happened to Ndigbo in that war was wrong. The killings were senseless and totally unjustified no matter what the ground rules were at the time. 

A country ought not to leave a matter like Biafra unaddressed because doing so then makes it 'normal'. Ever since then, it has been one violence or the other visited on Nigerians either in Zaki-biam or Odi or on our bad roads and terrible hospitals, not to forget that most violent of government actions, unbridled corruption.

I am not a believer in inter-temporal punishments but I believe that even if you were not a party to the crime, you can help in putting right a wrong. 

The Ikemba's passing is another teachable moment for Nigeria. We never have a shortage of these moments but we are consistent in never learning anything from them. This is a moment when we are once again reminded of the unresolved issues from our past, another chance to at least begin to understand that the rattling sounds we hear whenever we open the Nigerian closet is of skeletons that have been left unattended to.


I pray for the repose of Chief Ojukwu's soul and that God will grant his wife, children, family and all who have come to look up to him in one way or the other the strengthe to bear this loss. I pray that God will grant him eternal rest and keep him in the palm of His hands for all time.

 

I am also tired of waiting for the Nigerian government to do what I think is the right thing. I often get the feeling that this is beyond them.

It is not right that I share the same passport with people who were brutalised in the name of keeping us all together. It cannot be, especially as the things that keep us together till today are not things any sane person would be proud of.

And so, on behalf of myself and myself alone (Feyi Fawehinmi), I want to say that on the off chance that these atrocities were committed in my name by even the most convoluted degree of separation, I say to my Igbo brothers and sisters, I am terribly sorry for the things that were done to you and your parents. 

Si kele onye nti chiri; enu anughi, ala anu

Those things were not right no matter the causes of that war. They go against everything I have come to know as just and right. 

To the 700 killed at Asaba who Jerome Okolo has managed to name individually and the 1 million others who might never be properly named, these things were wrong. And to me they will always be wrong.

I dont know how anyone else feels about these things, but I know how I feel.

I also hope we get to a point where we can sit down with our past, not to apportion blame, but to come to be able to realise the deep error of our ways and move on from them with the understanding that they must never be repeated.

Nigeria as a country is strategically situated in a volatile part of Africa.  As the conflicts there drive away investors from the Middle East, thanks to the new "Arab Spring," the expansion of the oil industry in Nigeria may look to be a safe bet for global oil companies.  With the global economy in turmoil and the Middle East in transition, a group like Boko Haram can harm U.S. interests throughout Africa.  A potential merger with other groups such as Al Shabab would escalate the Afghan-style terror even further, not to mention allow for a new base for al-Qaeda in Africa.

See?  they are not joking. They will protect their interest, just hope it aligns with ours.

This is how sensible societies enforce their laws, not by accepting "Oga Abeg sir" pleadings. Not by asking looters and incompetent liars to "take a bow and go"

Reported earlier this morning,  breakaway Republic of Biafra leader Chukwuemeka Ojukwu died in a London hospital after a stroke. The Nigerian colonel and politician served as the leader of the seccessionist Biafra republic from 1967 to 1970 - a move that was at the center of the Nigerian Civil War, also known as the Nigerian-Biafran War, which would eventually see the deaths of 1 to 3 million civillians and millitary personnel, a few years after Nigeria gained its independence from Britain in 1960.

The rebel movement would eventually be squashed, and Biafra was reclaimed by Nigeria soon after Ojukwu fled, spending 13 years in exile, and eventually returned to Nigeria after he was unconditionally pardoned in 1982, where he would live the life of an elder statesman, with a few unsuccessful attempts at returning to active roles in the country's politics.

And some 40 years after the Nigerian-Biafran War, remnants of that conflict's roots still divide the country across ethnic lines, with the Igbo people, who made up the majority of the seccessionist Biafra republic (due to economic, ethnic, cultural and religious tensions, particularly with the northern feudal Muslim states and leaders), continue to endure political isolation in the country. 

Thus, the dream of a true seperate country of their own is still very much alive for some within that forner breakaway region. As Ojukwu himself was quoted as saying in 2006, “Biafra is always an alternative.”

I'm not sure if a definitive documentary/film on the war has ever been produced (if anyone knows something I don't, let me know); however, I did find this hour-long 1995 BBC documentary titled Biafra: Fighting a War without Guns, which examines the Igbo struggle to secede from Nigeria, told by those who witnessed the tragedy first-hand,  including the leader of the secessionist republic, Ojukwu himself.

The doc is currently on YouTube, in 7 parts, where you can watch it; the person who uploaded it there didn't make the clips embeddable for whatever reason (something that really annoys me actually - I hate it when people do that), so you'll have to go to YouTube to watch it there.

Our people must be rescued no matter what

We've Discussed this several times on NL. Wole Soyinka did NOT start cultism or university hooliganism in Nigeria.

University fraternities and Sororoties were not created by Soyinka, and they were not designed for gangsters and hooligans.

Soyinka started an ideological social club to push certain values and fight injustice.

Unfortunately, subsequent generations of Nigerian students, probably traumatized by years of violent harsh military rule, bastardized his good idea.

Soyinka did his part in the university as a young student and left, it's up to this new generation to do theirs. What organization have we formed to fight injustice?? Huh?

Except you are following northern affairs from the newspapers, I won't call what goes on in the North -sharia enforcement. I see sheiks, imams and some politicians using the sharia hisbah police as their personal scarecrow, but I see little sharia enforcement. ( one reason why I quickly declared ex-Gov Shekarau of Kano a two-faced clown during the April election debate)

Besides, despite all the noise it gathered, the northern sharia issue is an anomaly and a constitutional egg shell. OBJ was just being clever by half by ignoring it, and northern politicians themselves know it is hard to actually enforce total sharia without declaring those states and the region theocratic, something they really can't do right now because they have a secular FG, Christian minorities and non-Muslim residents to bother about.

Universal Sharia law cannot survive in the north. Culturally and historically, despite the stereotype, the average northern Nigerian Muslim is not as hard line as that. Politicians like Yerima of Zamfara and co just played that card in 1999 to whip up sentiment and political support.

So on this issue both sides will have to work together, and the FG holds the card, political will is needed and this support from the traditional northern establishment is a good incentive for FG action.

One other factor we must consider, there are real religious bigots in the north Just like in other places, they've not weighed in on this issue. The FG should cooperate with these northern leaders and act quickly and decisively before the bigots find their voice.
