I think the man at the helm of affairs in this country wants to empower his people to be power brokers just like he used the state he governed to gather resources he used to ascend to power. An average man should braze up for hardship as all the means to gather liquid (money) for solidification of power must be utilised to the fullest. Petrol, gas, diesel are increasing in price at the benefit of few that run the biz. Tax will increase too. People have to understand how cartel men work. Common man, sorry o; pele.

NUC orders staff audit in federal varsities
By Deborah Tolu-Kolawole
17th September 2023
The National Universities Commission has ordered an audit of academic and non-academic staff of federal universities in the country, Sunday PUNCH learnt on Saturday.
A letter signed by the acting Executive Secretary of the commission, Chris Maiyaki, dated September 14, 2023 and addressed to all Vice-Chancellors, noted that the order followed a permission granted by the Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman.

The message read, “The National Universities Commission has briefed the Honourable Minister of Education on the need for a manpower audit, preparatory to a well-informed manpower planning befitting the exponential expansion being experienced in the Nigerian university system.
“Consequently, the Honourable Minister of Education has directed Vice-Chancellors of all Nigerian universities to conduct a manpower audit in their respective institutions. The reports of the envisaged audit should encapsulate their staffing profiles including nominal rolls with staff file numbers according to their full time, visiting or adjunct categories, to be submitted in both hard and soft copies through the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission, for onward transmission to the good offices of the Honourable Minister of Education.”
While indicating the address the information should be forwarded to, the message added, “I am to emphasise that there is some degree of urgency implicit in the ministerial directive, which responses are expected on or before Monday, 9 October, 2023.

Since military government lacks legitimacy, why did Nigerians accept state creation including FCT, L.G.A, geopolitical zones, plus the constitution of the FRN and even printing of currencies? I wish an intelligent nairalander can write on this topic to make Nigerians understand better.

I pray it works o. The president has interest in the high price of petrol and it's one of the reason the NNPC GMD is still being retained. How can you invest billions of dollars in a private refinery and allow low price of the products?
Politics / Re: Over N1 Trillion Saved Since Subsidy Removal, Says Tinubu by kingi777: 6:21am On Aug 01, 2023
Use the savings to refurbish our moribund refineries or build modular refineries in each state. Establish many compressed natural gas stations or other alternative fuels across states, cities and towns. Encourage solar powered electricity supply to support stability of normal conventional electricity supply across the country for at least 12 hours daily during day time eg 6am to 6pm.
Why is the President not even talking of solving the root problem of subsidy which is building refineries? I guess all these gimmicks is to prepare ground for the private refinery in Lagos to monopolise refining and sales of petroleum products so as to recoup the huge money they invested.

The Emperor likes making money without milk of human consideration. For eg, in the state he governed, he increased tax (more like extortion) which was a heavy burden on businesses especially on the traders and other small businesses. It was from his administration transportation fare increased in state. He used media propaganda to justify the billions generated through extortion and violence. In the state he governed, if people are interviewed about his style of governance, 70% would not recommend him as can be seen in the last election. Now he has brought his style of intimidation and extortion at the detriment of the people to national level.
People are suffering, Nigerians deserve better abeg. Even if half subsidy is restored until the refineries are fully functional, please the policy makers should do it.

I was forced to pay N130,000 on the spot for one way Dana flight in order to meet up with appointment. Meanwhile after filling form for refund, they are giving 2 weeks for refund. I think there should be a way to enforce them to pay for damages.

President Tinubu should please look for ways of reducing the suffering of the masses after the fuel subsidy removal. In my opinion, he should give licence for more modular refinery to bring down the price of petrol. Prices have skyrocketed and an average man on the street now finds it difficult to survive due to high cost of fuel that affects everything.
The government officials from local to federal level think for themselves and how to remain in power. President Tinubu should be different and think of humanity as God has been good to him.

Uber, Bolt drivers begin nationwide strike

By Temitayo Jaiyeola

The Amalgamated Union of App-based Transport Workers of Nigeria, comprising drivers under the platform of e-hailing companies like Uber and Bolt, has said it will commence a nationwide protest today (Wednesday).
It planned to withdraw services of its drivers from the general public today.
After the hike in the price of Premium Motor Spirit, the drivers decried the low fare increase by the ride-hailing transport companies
According to a statement by the union, the increase by the app-based firms stood between 25 to 30 per cent, which was far from the union’s demand for a 200 per cent increase, and a 50 per cent reduction in commission respectively,

The drivers, who said they could no longer work under these conditions, noted that they had previously appealed to the companies to reduce their commissions on the ground that they did not reflect industry benchmark commissions.

Armed passengers steal Lagos Uber driver’s car

They urged all app-based workers across the country to be ready to fight the menace until victory was achieved.
The statement read in part, “The union’s technical team is versed with the operation and technicality of ride-hailing companies and on our calculations, any app company can breakeven charging below five per cent even though the union recommended a flat commission of 10 per cent or 50 per cent off their current commission during our last meeting, as we believe this will help us to cope with maintenance costs, spare parts and various overhead cost and the current fuel increase.

“We can no longer tolerate any act of dictatorial practices by any app company because we are workers and as an organised union, we have written several letters to these companies for a round table discussion where we can look at various areas of concern and dialogue but they have remained adamant with a deliberate intention to avoid responsibility.
“So, as a result of this insensitivity, the union is directing all its members across the nation to shut down their service on all ride-hailing applications from Wednesday, June 7, 2023, in protest against every dictatorial practice and lack of concern for welfare and security of App-Based Transport workers of Nigeria.”

Travel / Re: How Do People Survive In Nigeria? by kingi777: 3:10pm On Jun 05, 2023
Things were a little better during Jonathan's era. People got overfed and were challenging the government. Buhari reduced the feeding of people by increasing price of petrol, cooking gas, food etc. The hunger in people didn't allow them to challenge his government. Now, the government in power have seen that increasing the poverty would decrease the rate of agitation as it's a well fed man that would think of protesting. Moreover, the less the masses see money, the more money is accrued by the rich and political class for power consolidation.

The truth is that the power that be in Nigeria wanted a free and fair election to some extent but when Obi tsunami started in the South and North Central Nigeria with some North Eastern States such as Taraba, significant number of Adamawa, Gombe etc, signal to stop Obi came into play. Allowing Atiku to win would also unite the South which will be a threat to the North. The best bet was to allow Tinubu to emerge as the winner. I think Tinubu is a man of destiny whether any one likes it or not. He emerged against the preference of the power that be.

If the Igbos had voted an outsider, people from other regions would've blamed the Igbos for not being united. Igbos should not feel dejected but keep their shoulders high because they really got supported by majority of southerners and middle belt just that the power that be don't want them. FG begins 40% pay rise for workers, excludes doctors, lecturers

23rd April 2023

By Deborah Tolu-Kolawole

Only the 144,766 federal civil servants under the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure will benefit from the new 40 per cent peculiar allowance introduced by the Federal Government.
This implies that other workers under the employment of the Federal Government but operating under different salary structures will not benefit.
For instance, university workers, who are under the Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure, and medical doctors, who work for the Federal Government, will also not benefit from the pay rise as they are under the Consolidated Medical Salary Scale.
Other categories of federal workers who will not benefit from the peculiar allowance are nurses, non-academic workers in tertiary institutions, the police and members of the armed forces, among others.
In a memo obtained by our correspondent on Saturday, the National Salaries Income and Wages Commission headed by Ekpo Nta noted that only 144,766 staff members of the federal civil service under the CONPSS salary structure would be paid.
Ekpo said in a memo addressed to the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, which was sighted by our correspondent on Saturday, “I refer to my letter No. SWC/S/04/S,651/11/271 dated 24th of February, 2023 and the conclusions of the 11th meeting of the Presidential Committee on Salaries held on 7th of March, 2023 on the above-mentioned subject and convey approval for the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning to implement the peculiar allowance attached herewith for staff on the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure.”
“This approval takes effect from 1st of January, 2023 and the estimated sum of seventy nine billion, three hundred and seventy-three million, three hundred and forty thousand, nine hundred and fifty-nine Naira (N79,373,340,959.00) per annum required to implement it for the 144,766 staff on CONPSS will be funded from the treasury.
The commission will periodically monitor the implementation of this approval through salary inspections.”
In a breakdown attached to the memo, the commission stated that a total of 144,766 staff members would benefit from the payment.
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, had disclosed that the Federal Government approved a pay raise for civil servants in the country.
He added that the pay rise had been included in the 2023 budget, noting that it would take effect from January 1, 2023.
Ngige described the pay raise as a peculiar allowance for civil servants in view of the current economic reality and it was meant to help government workers to cushion the effects of rising inflation, rising cost of living, and hikes in transportation fare, housing and electricity tariffs.
ASUU, however, protested the exclusion of its members from the payment of the peculiar allowance.
The National President of the union, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, accused the government of trying to create problems in the system, adding that ASUU would study the situation on the ground and make its stand known soon.
We just saw the news this evening that arrears are being paid to workers. We are surprised. However, we will study the situation. The government is simply trying to create a problem in the system. We are watching and we are studying the situation of things on the ground,” he told our correspondent on the telephone.
The government will spend N79.37bn annually to fund the pay rise, even as some workers have started enjoying the largesse.
The amount, according to information obtained by our correspondent, will be funded from the treasury.
Some federal civil servants, who spoke to our correspondent on Saturday, said they had started receiving bank alerts of the arrears for the first three months of the year.
A high ranking civil servant in Ilorin the Kwara State, who spoke on condition of anonymity, noted that the arrears came in alongside the April salary.
“I received my own arrears today (Saturday). Some of our other colleagues have also confirmed receipt of the arrears. It came in alongside our April salaries,” the civil servant said.
An Ibadan-based civil servant, who confirmed the development, said, “Yes, it is true. Though I am a teacher in a Federal Government school, I can confirm to you that I received my April salary alongside the arrears.
The regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had proposed a 40 per cent pay rise for workers to cushion the effects of the planned removal of fuel subsidy.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Productivity, Olajide Oshundun, said the pay rise would be applicable to all workers from level 1 to 17.

NARD reaction
The Ngerian Association of Resident Doctors has kicked against the exclusion of doctors from the Federal Government’s pay rise for civil servants.
Speaking with Saturday PUNCH, the President of NARD, Dr Emeka Orji, said, “Our members are not happy with that development, because since over one year that the Federal Government commenced the processes of increment in the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure both for doctors and other health workers, that process has yet to be completed.
We are happy that they increased the salary of civil servants, but the only thing is that they have yet to do ours up till now. These are some of the things causing agitation.
“I’m sure that when we have our national emergency council meeting on Friday, April 28, 2023, this will be part of the major discussions and decisions will be taken in that meeting.”
Orji said the association might be forced to take a more drastic action if urgent steps were not taken regarding pay rise for its members.
He added, “We have gone past the era of petitioning the government. We are currently having a hard time calming our members down and it may not be as easy as we did at the January NEC meeting.
“Instead of increasing the salary, the government is trying to use the back door to sponsor a bill to restrict our movement.”
