5 Simple Ways of Staying Free of Unwanted Pregnancy and Reducing Abortion

“Safe sex” is used to describe precautions taken to prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and unintended pregnancy. As with other articles on facebook group, I write in response to several people who have asked questions relating to safe sex. They are mostly unmarried, and most refer to pregnancy prevention. This post is especially for such people (and in answer to their questions).

“Safe sex” is a misnomer because sex can never be absolutely safe if it involves two opposite sexes with reproductive capacities. We could only talk about “safer sex”; that is, reducing the chances of getting pregnant as much as possible. No 100% guarantee, but we could get close to that!

Sex can never be 100% safe if it involves two opposite sexes with reproductive capacities!

There are several methods with their advantages and disadvantages. We would not be able to exhaust them in details in a single post. We can only choose a few. Drinking salt-water does not prevent pregnancy! Washing with potash (“kanwa”), garlic, or recently, Coca-cola doesn’t work either! So what works?

#1: A very powerful alternative to sex is abstinence from sex! It is 100% safe! Preventing pregnancy and infections. Lack of sex does not kill, neither does it have any adverse effect on health, either of the mind or the body! Don’t I just love abstinence!

#2: Calendar Method (or calculation of safe period) is a very good place to start, especially for ladies with regular menstrual cycle (that is, you see your period about the same time monthly, with only few days plus or minus). Simply put, if we call the day you started menstruating “day 1″ and 8 days after you started menstruating as “day 8″, then avoid sex from “day 8″ through “day 19″. Every other day is safe, including days you menstruate! That is “day 1″ to “day 7″ is safe; and also, “day 20″ after commencement of menses to the next menses! Generally avoid days around “day 14″, ovulation period. Take time to study this method and your cycle. It is not just cheap; it is free, and very effective.

#3: Withdrawal method, taking out the male organ just in time before ejaculation (releasing), has proven to be quite effective. This however requires skill and self-control from the guy. But, it is said to obstruct the flow of the whole process! He must be experienced to know when he is about releasing sperm. (People practice by masturbating to become familiar with that “point”!) Some whitish semen-like fluid comes out before the actual “release”; this doesn’t usually contain sperm cell; its for lubrication. Failure comes from being carried away and not coming out before release. Failure also comes from going for another “round” after releasing; some semen remains within, which can only be removed by urinating. In summary, come out way before release; urinate to clear the “pipeline” before going in for another “round”, which is not usually advisable. How dangerous semen is!

#4: We all know about condoms! People, especially guys, complain about how it reduces sensitivity. Yet it has a high percentage of effectiveness if used correctly, and it also protects from several deadly diseases, including HIV/AIDS. It is cheap, and it prolongs intercourse, helping the guy to “last” longer! Failure comes from condom breaking, or slipping off during or after intercourse. Check the expiry date. Don’t lubricate with vaseline or baby oil; rather go to a pharmacy and get “KY Jelly” for lubricating the condom if you must. Make sure she is well aroused before penetration. Allow for some space at the tip of the condom. And make sure you come out before the male organ becomes too soft, holding the base of the condom while you carefully come out to prevent spillage. Don’t use condoms more than once. In case of breakage or spillage, get emergency contraception.

#5: I won’t talk much about contraceptive pills! It is among the most effective, but for the side-effects, like weight increase. Emergency contraceptives, like Postinor, are very effective in preventing pregnancy if taken within 72 hours after sex — the earlier, the better. If you vomit within 3 hours of taking the tablet, take another one. It doesn’t protect for subsequent sex. It may, however, affect your next menses in timing (it may come earlier or later) or in volume (it may be heavy or scanty, or not at all!)

Its best to combine two or more methods; it raises the effectiveness of preventing pregnancy to near 100%! For example, consider “safe period withdrawal” or “abstinence abstinence”! Lol.

These methods prevent pregnancy, but don’t prevent guilt. Condoms cover the organ and not the conscience. This article does not address preventing STIs.

Ex-President seeks protection

HOLIDAYING former President Goodluck Jonathan has dashed into Abuja to launch a protest, The Nation has learnt.

Dr Jonathan is disturbed by the determination of President Muhammadu Buhari to probe how $2.1billion was illegally withdrawn from the Excess Crude Account (ECA), sources said yesterday, pleading not to be named “because of the sensitivity of the matter”.

Jonathan is said to be planning a protest to the Gen. Abubakar Abdulsalami National Peace Committee for 2015 General Elections that:

•the Buhari administration is trying to blackmail him and his erstwhile cabinet members;

•he is not pleased with the corruption tar being put on his administration; and that

•he is worried by the likely probe of the whereabouts of the $4billion taxes and dividends paid by the Nigerian Liquified Natural gas Ltd between 2009 and 2014.

Jonathan and some of his ministers are said to be angry that Buhari ought to know that such taxes and dividends are remitted to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

Another matter troubling Jonathan and his ministers, according to sources, is how the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) under his watch allegedly blew N3.8trillion in three years.

The Abdulsalami Committee is yet to have audience with Buhari on the allegations made by Jonathan, a source said.

The former President arrived in the country last weekend to “defend his administration”. He could not be reached for comments last night.

It was, however, learnt that he had chosen to table before the Abdulsalami Committee some issues, including the controversial $2.1billion withdrawn from the Excess Crude Account (ECA) without recourse to the National Economic Council(NEC).

A source said: “The former President returned into the country at the weekend but he is unhappy with the bashing of his administration.

“Jonathan believes that Buhari is blackmailing him and his ministers, contrary to the terms of the 2015 poll peace agreement which led to a smooth transition from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

“I think Jonathan approached the Abdulsalami Committee so that he will be left alone by Buhari who openly said he inherited an empty treasury from his predecessor.”

A former minister in the Jonathan administration, who spoke in confidence, said: “The ex-President is unhappy that the administration of Buhari has been stigmatising his administration instead of putting him into confidence on issues.

“For God’s sake, let them allow this man to earn his well-deserved retirement. If there is any observation by the new government, there are standard official procedures of addressing such.”

NEC, on June 29, raised a four-man panel on how NNPC spent N3.8 trillion in three years.

The four ‘wise men’ are Governors Adams Oshiomhole (Edo), Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom), Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna) and Ibrahim Dankwambo (Gombe).

While awaiting the submission of the committee’s report, Oshiomhole joined issues with the immediate past Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on how $2.1billion in ECA was disbursed without approval.

He said the $2.1 billion, only $1 billion was paid to oil marketers as fuel subsidy and about $1billion used for election purposes.

Although Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala claimed that the ex-President approved the spending of $1 billion, Oshiomhole said Jonathan had no right to do so.

He said any withdrawal from the account ought to be approved by NEC.

LAGOS—As fresh facts begin to emerge about the Ikorodu banks robbery operation where N80 million was reportedly carted away a fortnight ago, one of the suspects has revealed that they planned the operation at a meeting that lasted 30 minutes.
It was also discovered that 12 members of the gang were recruited from the Niger Delta region.

This is just as the four suspects arrested in connection with the operation, which lasted close to two hours, have confessed that their gang was responsible for similar operations at Ijede road three weeks before that of Ipakodo also at Ikorodu, and that of Lekki, where five persons, including three policemen, were killed.

The arrested suspects include Omoboye, alias Alarm blow, 39; Bright, 25; Ikuesan, 37, and Abiwa, 20.

The bank robbery, according to Bright, was carried out by an 18-man gang. Bright, a graduate of English/Christian Religious Study, CRS, from the College of Education, Ekiadolor, Edo State, said a meeting with members of the gang, chaired by the gang’s leader, whose identity he gave as Million, was held in Abule area of Lagos same day the operation was carried out.


‘My role’

The father of two said: “Million is our leader. I was introduced to the gang by a friend named Akpan. I joined because I had no means of feeding my family. I am a wood logger, but business has been bad.

“Akpan took me to the gang’s meeting same day of the operation, on June 24, at Abule Ishawo area of Ikorodu. Those of us from Lagos included myself, M. O., Kelvin, S. K. Careboy and Million, while the rest were recruited from Warri, Delta State, by Million.

“He also brought eight rifles and two pump action guns from Warri, including the two operational vehicles. He taught us how to aim at our targets during the meeting, which lasted 30 minutes, with each of us instructed on what to do on reaching the venue.

“My role was to stand outside, with one of the pump action guns, shooting sporadically. I was also instructed to shoot at anyone who dared to intrude, while the boys recruited from Warri confronted the police.

“I had over 900 cartridges. At the end of the operation, we escaped in a fibre boat and went to the creeks, where the loot was shared. At the creeks, we analysed the operation and Million said we did well, promising to use us for subsequent operations.”

‘I got N2m’

“I was not allowed to go near where the money was counted. Million and other leaders counted the money. But Akpan told me they got N80 million. I was given N2 million.

“I bought a Lexus SUV for N1.5 million and I gave my wife N30,000 to enrol for an exam. I also gave some of my friends out of it and also bought jerry cans for my brother, who is a pipeline vandal.
“Million instructed those from Warri to set the operational vehicles ablaze before leaving the scene. That was after the numbers plates were removed.

“He collected the cost of the cars from the loot before sharing the rest among us. That was my first time of joining them. I did not go with them to the Lekki and Ijede banks operations.”

Briefing journalists earlier on the arrest, the outgoing Commissioner of Police, Kayode Aderanti, pointed out that the arrest was a demonstration of his earlier assurance to Lagosians that no criminal would perpetrate any sinister motive without being arrested.


Fresh facts have emerged on where and how the recent bank robbery in Lekki area of Lagos was planned. On Thursday, March 12, at about 5pm, a gang of dare devil armed robbers had through the Lagoon water front on Admiralty way, Lekki, stormed a branch of First City Monument Bank located on the popular street.The robbers went on rampage inside the bank premises ransacking the vault, Automated Teller Machines and dispossessing several members of staff of their valuables.

After the movie-like incident, the bandits left in their trail five corpses, three of which are policemen who, though on another assign­ment, engaged the bandits in order to forestall their operations.

The slain policemen were Inspector Bethel Agbobu, Sgt. Odehohwo George and Corpo­ral Imoisiu Ikechukwu. The civilian victims include Mr. Sowemimo Kabiru and Miss Sa­rah Ibikunle, a 15-year-old girl who hawked around the vicinity of the bank.

Embarrassed by the raid, the state Commis­sioner of Police, Kayode Aderanti ordered the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the command to track the suspects. Days later, four members of the gang were tracked down and arrested by SARS team lead by SP Abba Kyari. They include Duke Odogbo, 39-year-old leader of the gang, Lawrence Kingsley, 31, Ebiworisuwo Tosan, 18 and Ekelemo Kuete, 30. The suspects, who are all Ijaw boys from Ondo State, gave detailed confession of how the robbery was planned from a camp located in the creeks between Ogun and Lagos states known as Fatola camp.

“When I got to Lagos, I took a bike from Agric bus stop in Ikorodu to a place they call Abule Oba which is close to the water. We boarded a boat and ended up in a camp called the Fatola camp. It was about 45 minutes ride and the camp is a world of its own. I knew that place existed but I never knew it was that big. They were using keg to move fuel but it was better off in Warri where we were using drums to move crude oil. In Warri, I had my own local refinery and was drilling directly from source but in Lagos they were vandal­izing NNPC pipelines.

“They welcomed me very well and gave me a special treat which include good food and women. After eating, I was called to join their meeting. It was then they told me that they are planning a bank robbery. It was then it dawned on me that Vikar intentionally invited me because of their planned attack.”

Although he claimed that he was not aware of the plan to rob a bank, he decided to assist them since he is more experienced. “I needed money and this was an opportunity to make quick money with ease. I was initially worried because I have heard of how armed robbers were arrested in Lagos. They convinced me that Lagos has been peaceful for sometime and no one will be expecting them to strike. Most importantly, I was convinced because they assured me that every attention is on politicians. I asked them if they had good in­formation and they told me that they had sent several persons to enter the bank and study the environment.

“I was impressed and decided to join them since it is less stressful. I knew what it takes and since I have mastered the use of gun, I was asked to lead the team.

“The next day, being March 11, 2015, at about 12pm, we boarded two boats with 10 persons each, started our journey to Lekki. Because the area is swampy, it was difficult to move fast, so it took us the whole day to get to the island. We waited till about 5pm, when we were sure that the bank was through with the day’s work. There was much traffic on the road and we discovered that there is no way we will be in the bank without drawing atten­tion. I advised them that the best thing to do was to scare everyone. Naturally, if you sud­denly hear the sound of gunshot, you will run for your life before even thinking of picking your phone to make distress call. Since we were dressed in military uniform it was easier because people will assume that we are solid­ers who decided to rob a bank. We also started shooting so that people will abandon their cars and run making it difficult for any daring po­liceman to come closer. We started shooting while I moved into the bank with one other person”, he added.

Just like they predicted, the security men who were not on alert, fled the scene long before the robbers arrived. According to him: “The security men on duty fled when they heard our gunshots from a distance. I was not ready to beg anyone to open the door so I shot at the door and we moved in. We did not kill anyone in the bank because they co-operated with us. I was surprised that the manager man­aged to escape unnoticed. One of the staff, a man took us to the vault and we collected the whole money there. We also moved over to the ATM house and cleared part of it. I felt we had gotten enough, even as I was told that the manager left with all the foreign currency in the bank. The operation took us about 15 minutes to execute and we were on our way back. It was on our way back that I discovered three new rifles. I asked them how they man­aged to get them and they told me that they belonged to three policemen that were killed at the scene.

“I was so angry with them for coming along with the gun. I knew the implication. My uncle who was once killed and his rifle taken was dismissed even in death. I was dis­appointed that they killed those policemen. Their excuse was that they were at the scene and was a major threat. I felt terrible when I heard on TV that an innocent girl was also killed in the process,” Duke narrated.

Back to their camp, the gang quickly counted the money and discovered that it disappointed when it was discovered that the only money we got that night was N15million. If I had entered the bank alone, maybe they will assume that I took part of the money. I was given N500, 000 as my share of the deal. This was so because there were so many persons in the camp and they all got their own share of the money. They behave like a community and I was told that they are all under an oath of secrecy. That very night, it was all over the news, they gathered in groups cel­ebrating the incident and laughing. I felt bad because of those policemen and little girl that were killed. Normally, I do not kill in an operation unless in self-defense.

“On Thursday, March 13, 2015, I left the camp and trav­elled back to Warri. I even bought a newspaper that published the robbery. I was amazed at the report and then very happy that I am a star. They were talking about an incident that I personally supervised. I also formed the habit of storing news­papers that featured my exploit even in Warri. I laughed when politicians were accusing themselves because of our visit,” he said.

Back home and N500, 000 richer, Duke claimed that he spent the money to construct another local refinery in Warri. “With the money I got I went back to my bunkering business. It was the first supply that I made that I used to buy a car. I was able to supply about 300 drums of crude oil. I had moved on with my life when police came to my house in Warri and arrested me. I was shocked, it was then I knew that God had finally arrested me. It has never happened before, all the prob­lem that I had with security men was on bunkering and I have never been jailed because of it.

“I had no choice but to co-operate with the police. As soon as I was arrested and the policemen told me that they are from SARs Lagos, I knew it was time to give my life to Christ. I warned them in Lagos of the risk but they insisted that after the death of those policemen in Arepo, no security man dared to visit them in the creeks. I did not believe them, that is why I ran away immediately. To the glory of God, I have given my life to Christ. He is the God of second chance and I know that he will see me through. I know that I have failed my family but I did everything I could do to provide for my family,” he lamented.

When asked how he perfected his shooting skills, Duke said that every Niger Delta based militant knows how to han­dle guns. “If you are into bunkering, the first thing is to go for training on self-defense. We have boys in Niger Delta whose job is to train people. It is a very risky job. Apart from security men, your fellow man can decide to kill you and take over your refinery”, he stated.

On why he did not embrace amnesty like the other mili­tants, Duke said that he was never a militant right from day one. “We were happy when the President announced that he was granting amnesty to the boys in the creeks. I tried to join the amnesty but because I was not with them in the creeks, they didn’t include me. I later travelled down to Warri where I learnt the business of steel and building engines. I was able to get a job that did not last for three years.

“Naturally, the only job available was oil bunkering. I went into it in full scale and I was able to raise money to marry my wife. It was one of the biggest in town. Although, we made so much money, it was not an easy job. You invest so much money mounting your personal drilling site and suddenly po­lice or navy will come and destroy everything. We spent so much on guns and building the refinery. For the past one year, they are no longer taking it easy with us and I could not afford to rebuild the local refineries. This was why I called Vikar to find a way out,” he said.

The second suspect, Ekelemo Kuete who was one of the drivers that drove the boat to Lekki claimed that his own share of the loot was N50,000. “Every Ondo man must know how to swim and paddle boat.

Everyone was expecting that they will come back with at least N100million. There was an informa­tion that one Mallam was bringing hard currency into the bank that day, Ekelemo said.

The third suspect, Ebiworisuwo Tosan, 19, who got N7,000 from the loot told Saturday Sun that he came to the camp to serve the leaders. “It is the rule in the camp that once there is a successful raid, everyone in the camp must get a share. We are under an oath and our current leader Osy is doing everything possible to ensure that we are well taken care of. I do not have much doing in the camp, I will go to Ikorodu with kegs of fuel and sell,” he said.

He insists that the main reason why he decided to join oth­ers was to raise money to go to school. “I have gotten an ad­mission to study Petro-chemical engineering. I wanted to get certificate so that I can get a legitimate work. My uncle told me that if I go to school, I will get a job in any oil company. I did not join them for any of their jobs because I am not old enough and has not gone for the regular training,” he said.

Fresh facts have emerged on where and how the recent bank robbery in Lekki area of Lagos was planned. On Thursday, March 12, at about 5pm, a gang of dare devil armed robbers had through the Lagoon water front on Admiralty way, Lekki, stormed a branch of First City Monument Bank located on the popular street.The robbers went on rampage inside the bank premises ransacking the vault, Automated Teller Machines and dispossessing several members of staff of their valuables.

After the movie-like incident, the bandits left in their trail five corpses, three of which are policemen who, though on another assign­ment, engaged the bandits in order to forestall their operations.

The slain policemen were Inspector Bethel Agbobu, Sgt. Odehohwo George and Corpo­ral Imoisiu Ikechukwu. The civilian victims include Mr. Sowemimo Kabiru and Miss Sa­rah Ibikunle, a 15-year-old girl who hawked around the vicinity of the bank.

Embarrassed by the raid, the state Commis­sioner of Police, Kayode Aderanti ordered the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the command to track the suspects. Days later, four members of the gang were tracked down and arrested by SARS team lead by SP Abba Kyari. They include Duke Odogbo, 39-year-old leader of the gang, Lawrence Kingsley, 31, Ebiworisuwo Tosan, 18 and Ekelemo Kuete, 30. EFCC Arraigns Two For $64,000 Romance Scam

The defendants, Akhigbe and Jindu were arrested by the EFCC sometime in 2013 based on a petition from one Jolanta K, an American. Jolanta alleged that she met Jindu, who introduced himself as a self-employed Caucasian pharmacist, online in June 2012. Impressed by his profile she “fell in love” with him, and both agreed to get married.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Wednesday July 1, 2015, arraigned the duo of Osaze Akhigbe and Ndekwu Jindu before Justice Lawal Akapo of the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja on an 11-count charge bordering on conspiracy to obtain goods and money by false pretence.

The defendants, Akhigbe and Jindu were arrested by the EFCC sometime in 2013 based on a petition from one Jolanta K, an American. Jolanta alleged that she met Jindu, who introduced himself as a self-employed Caucasian pharmacist, online in June 2012. Impressed by his profile she “fell in love” with him, and both agreed to get married.

She further alleged that in the course of the relationship, the defendant at different times hoodwinked her into parting with over Sixty Four Thousand United States Dollars ($64,000 USD).
Count 2 of the charge reads; “That you, Osaze Akhigbe on or about the 6th of September 2012 at Lagos within the Ikeja Judicial Division with the intent to defraud obtained a total sum of $1,900 (One Thousand Nine Hundred United States Dollars) from one Jolanta K. through Western Union money transfer under the false pretense that the money represent payment for marriage engagement processes between you and her in Nigeria and which pretence you knew was false”.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to them.

In view of the plea of the defendants the prosecution counsel, A. A Akujo asked for a trial date and prayed the court to remand them in prison custody. Justice Akapo adjourned the case till September 21, 2015 for hearing of the bail application and ordered that the defendants be remanded in Kirikiri Maximum Prison.
