Kenya’s President William Ruto says he will withdraw a finance bill containing controversial tax hikes after deadly protests which saw parliament set ablaze on Tuesday.

In an address to the nation, he said it was clear that Kenyans "want nothing" to do with the bill.

"I concede," he said, adding that he will not sign the bill into law.

At least 22 people were killed in Tuesday’s protests, according to the state-funded Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNHRC).

Mr Ruto said he would now enter into dialogue with the young people, who were at the forefront of the biggest protests to hit the country since he was elected in 2022.

"Listening keenly to the people of Kenya who have said loudly that they want nothing to do with this Finance Bill 2024, I concede.
"And therefore, I will not sign the 2024 Finance Bill, and it shall subsequently be withdrawn. The people have spoken,” he said in the televised address.

The bill was passed by parliament on Tuesday, despite nationwide demonstrations against it.
Protesters broke into parliament, vandalising the interior and setting parts of the complex on fire. The ceremonial mace, symbolising the authority of the legislature, was stolen.
Mr Ruto initially responded with defiance.
He ordered the military to be deployed, saying "violence and anarchy" would not be tolerated.
But he climbed down on Wednesday, as public anger grew over the killing of protesters.
Wanjeri Nderu, head of the International Society For Human Rights, told the BBC what was experienced during the protest was “like we were at war”, adding that police were using live ammunition even before parliament was breached.

Catholic bishops also condemned the actions of the security forces and “earnestly appealed to the police not to shoot at the protesters”, while also urging protesters to remain peaceful.

The Law Society of Kenya called on international criminal investigators to help families' quest for justice, saying that it had reports that soldiers were engaging protesters in parliament.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was "deeply saddened by the reports of deaths and injuries - including of journalists and medical personnel".

He also urged the Kenyan authorities to "exercise restraint", and called for all demonstrations to be peaceful.

The protests took place despite the government dropping some of the bill's most controversial proposals amid protests last week.

Demonstrators demanded that the entire bill be scrapped, which Mr Ruto has now agreed to do.

The government had previously argued that Kenyans needed to pay more taxes to reduce the country's debt - a huge sum of more than $80bn (£63bn), which costs the country more than half of its annual tax revenues to service.
The original bill had proposed taxes on bread, cooking oil, mobile money services, specialised hospitals and on motor vehicles - all of which Kenyans said would worsen the cost-of-living crisis.

Kenyans pushed their way into freedom from overtaxation. Imagine he wanted to tax cancer patients, sanitary towels, baby diapers, bread etc. He’s had a change of heart after people showed him pepper yesterday. As for the members of parliament who had signed that bill trying to pass it into law, we shall not forget. 2027, we meet at the ballot. Ruto has finally erased that bill.
The protestors said that? They said they would recall them. undecided

■ Yes, Samuel Nwanosike the most vocal of them all, did 1 year as caretaker chairman and has done 2 tenures of 3yrs each, amounting to 7yrs as Ikwerre LG Chairman, yet he still needs extension.
Obarilomate Ollor of Eleme LG, did 1 year as caretaker Chairman and 3 yrs as elected chairman, he was billed to go for 2nd tenure if not for this their problems, and some other ones I can't remember their names in the riverine areas, most of the outgone chairmen did 1yr as caretaker under Wike, b4 being elected.
The issue is not about the former chairmen not wanting to go home, it's solely about who controls the soul of the grassroot supports, which is found only in the Local govt systems, as foot soldiers. It's purely politics, and the odds favour Sim Fubara as the Executive Governor of Rivers State.
I know it is politics for sure. The problem is the people of River's State may have even had their constitutional right violated in all of this by their own local government councilmen as well as their governors. This revelation ought to have the people wanting answers not just from the LG officers but their lawmakers, past and present. undecided

∆ You didn't answer my questions. However, the weapon you say Nigerians have that is not being used is simply because patriotism is zero. Everybody, including you and me, is out to grab from the center when given the opportunity. Anybody in power is considered as his turn to chop.
∆ Inasmuch as your points are valid, but the fundamental problem is that nobody believes in ONE NIGERIA.
∆ Look at all the nations in Europe. They all have one national identity. Imagine if Italians, Portuguese, English were lumped together as one Country.
Or if Israel & Iran were joined as one country.

Or imagine as a businessman, being forced into partnership with another businessman.
At best, both of you will try to forge ahead, but if that doesn't work, it's either you renegotiate the terms of business or you go your separate ways.

Honestly speaking, I don't see Nigeria making any meaningful progress as a Nation under the present dispensation.
You may think otherwise. undecided
The lack of use of that weapon has more to do with what I suspect is a sense of learned hopelessness and general ignorance than it has to do with lack of patriotism. I mean consider the problems people experience at the local government level where the average person generally know these LGA councilmen and their movements. Are you wanting me to believe that the reason people refuse to stand up against these men who rob them blind right in their korokoro has to do with lack of patriotism? Come on naw! undecided

2. I don't give a sheet about one Nigeria either but that is no reason why I should allow the LG councilman who was only yesterday begging for our votes right in our neighborhood to now deprive us our share of money which could not only better our lives in the community but also help make sure our kids get a better life. undecided

3. The reason those countries have national identity has to do with the fact that the people band together starting at the local level and that filters up to the national level. None of that happens in Nigeria, and Nigeria is no much different from Kenya that we see today. undecided
