US Tornadoes: Buhari condoles American govt over deaths, destruction of whole towns
President Muhammadu Buhari has sent out a message to the United States of America following devastating tornadoes rocking the country.
The Nigerian leader extended the sympathies of the Nigerian government to the US and its people over the sad development that has caused deaths and destruction across six states. A brief statement signed by Femi Adesina, the President’s spokesman, said that Buhari was reacting to the catastrophe being televised around the globe since Friday.
Buhari said, “the destruction of whole towns, flattening of houses, schools, hospitals, businesses and other social infrastructure on a scale never seen before was deeply saddening.”
He said, “our deepest sympathies go to all those affected, as well as the government and the American people.”
The President called on Nigerians to join the rest of the world in praying for the US.
“This african man called Jibril is an immigrant in Valencia, Spain. Jibril picked an envelope containing €4,250 (Over N2.5m) on one of the streets in Valencia few days ago. Jibril then chose to play a hero and decided to take the envelope containing the money to the police and handed it over to police officers.
The officers and everyone around were surprised.
The police officer in charge then asked Jibril who is also an illegal immigrant to make a statement and its at that moment that they asked him to present his personal papers (ID)
The police officer then discovered that Jibril did not have a residence card (ID) to prove that he was legally living in Spain. He was then immediately detained.
Sadly, Jibril was last week deported back to his home country in Africa and banned for years without ever stepping a foot in Spain!”

Each Nigerian now owes N165,500 as country’s debt rises to N35.5tnPublished 3 hours ago on September 16, 2021By David IbemereNigeria plummets in World Happiness Index, drops 38 spots in six years As at the end of June 30, each Nigerian now owes about N165,500 to countries, international organisations and domestic investors as government borrowing increased to N35.5 trillion.
Data obtained from the Debt Management Office (DMO) published on Wednesday showed that Nigeria’s present debt stock increased in the last six months to 7.75 percent higher than the N32.9 trillion recorded at the close of last year
In terms of debt per capita which is calculated as the total public debt of a country divided by the country’s population, within the last six months, Nigeria’s debt increased by 0.60 percent from N164,500 in December.
The population figure used for the calculation is 200 million, as there is currently no official figure.
Giving a breakdown of Nigeria’s debt stock, the Director-General of DMO, Patience Oniha, revealed that external debt accounted for N13.7 trillion or 38.7 percent while approximately N21.8 trillion was sourced from the local market.
China accounted for about 10 percent of the external debt (which amounts to approximately N1.37 trillion), while the multilateral organisations had the largest share of 54.9 per cent. Oniha also revealed that of the total value, 83.07 per cent was held by the Federal Government while the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) borrowings accounted for 16.93 per cent.
“The percentage of FG’s share of the national debt had increased from 81.94 per cent as at December 2020.
She however noted that the current debt stock remained within fiscally accepted bound but fears Nigeria’s low revenue can be a serious problem. The debt stock is within the acceptable limit; the challenge is not much is done to shore up poor revenue, if this is not done the country risks the debt sustainability issue”
“We should focus on revenue. The good thing about it is that the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning has started a programme aimed at growing the revenue profile. We must discipline ourselves to follow through to grow our revenue. If we continue to borrow and do nothing about growing our revenue base as other countries have done, we may have a debt sustainability challenge,” she said.
Oniha expressed concern that the country’s huge GDP has not translated to revenue, calling on authorities to aggressively pursue income-yielding policies.
“The country’s debt to GDP remained considerably low at 21.92 per cent, up from 21.61 per cent last year,
She, however, said it could increase to 35 per cent when the ways and means facility (WMF) that is, overdrafts with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is added to the debt stock.
On the current value of the WMF, the DG said she could only give information on the status at the beginning of the year, when it was estimated at N10 trillion, suggesting that the figure could be higher.
She admitted that the government had overreached the limit set by the CBN Act, stressing that the government is compelled to do so owing to the revenue shortfall.
“We are currently working at converting it to a tenor facility. This is because overdrafts should be cleared when they are due,” the DMO boss stated.
Aloy Ejimakor, who is one of the counsels to the leader of the indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has stated that he is receiving death threats “from people I’ve been defending for years.”
In a tweet on his verified Twitter handle on Monday, Ejimakor linked the threat of murder from IPOB members to the controversial suspension of the sit-at-home directive by the IPOB leadership.
He clarified that Kanu, in the detention of the Department of State Services, Abuja, did not pass the sit-at-home order that was started about three weeks ago through him (Ejimakor).
He noted that the message “was already delivered by others days before I visited him on 9th August.”
“I can no longer keep quiet because I’m receiving DEATH THREATS from people I’ve been defending for years. Hear this: Onyendu DID NOT pass the SIT AT HOME message through me. The message was already delivered by others days before I visited him on 9th August. Check social media,” Ejimakor wrote.
SaharaReporters had earlier today reported that residents of the South-East region observed the sit-at-home order again on Monday as they shunned businesses and commercial activities, despite the suspension of the directive by IPOB.
However, in some areas of the region, people went about their daily business.
IPOB had maintained that the Ghost Monday would no longer hold every Monday based on the directive from its leader, who said it should be observed only on the day he appears in court.
However, despite the declaration of the group that the weekly lockdown on Mondays has been suspended, some people in the region have continued to stay indoors on Mondays since the directive was first announced.
PHOTOS: Private Jets Take Over Kano International Airport For Yusuf, Zahra’s Wedding
As the Bichi Emirate in Kano State hosts the wedding ceremony of Yusuf Buhari and Princess Zahra Ado Bayero, the Mallam Aminu Kano international airport in the city hosted several private jets of guests
Nigerian leaders from the ruling All Progressives Congress and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, including past and present governors, and other dignitaries displayed wealth frontally on Friday by flying over 100 private jets to Kano State to attend the wedding of Yusuf, the son of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Amid the country’s rising debt profile blamed on wasteful expenditure by the leadership, over 100 private jets touched down on Friday at the Mallam Aminu Kano Airport owned by politicians and other affluent people attending the wedding.
The wedding between Yusuf and Zahra, daughter of Emir of Bichi, in Kano, has been tagged the merger of presidency and royalty by social observers.
The marriage of the new couple has been the talk of the town on social media for months.
“As we speak, there are more than 100 private jets at the Kano airport. You can hardly find a flight to Kano from anywhere since Wednesday. All the five-star hotels in this state have been booked. Kano is currently choked up. There is traffic congestion everywhere for Buhari’s son’s wedding,” a resident stated.
According to a statement by Garba Shehu, the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Buhari had sent a high-level delegation led by Professor Ibrahim Gambari, his Chief of Staff, to make preparations for the wedding.
The presidential aide had revealed that the delegation includes several ministers, including retired Major-General Bashir Magashi, Defence; Alhaji Sabo Nanono, Agriculture; Sen. Hadi Sirika, Aviation; Suleiman Hussein, Water Resources; and Garba Shehu.
Dignitaries at the event include Atiku Abubakar, Buhari’s major opponent in the 2019 presidential election; Femi Fani Kayode, Buhari’s fierce critic; and Rauf Aregbesola, former Governor of Osun State.
Israel Goodnews Balogun detained by the police for debunking Suleiman's claims miracle money stringent bail conditions.
Our correspondent learnt that Balogun posted a video on his Youtube channel where he showed clips of Suleman declaring to his congregation that angels would deposit money into their bank accounts.
The clips were from ministrations of the cleric in Atlanta, United States, and Auchi, Edo State, where worshippers showed their phones to testify to receiving credit alerts in their bank accounts.
Balogun described the claims as false and slammed Suleiman.
His remarks were trailed by mixed reactions on social media.
While some commended Balogun for his boldness, others said he was seeking relevance.
The businessman told our correspondent that he later got a threat call from one Obi-West.
“He said he is the eyes of Apostle Suleman on social media and said I should expect to hear from them. He said I will be missing and he will make sure I get punished by officers from the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters.
“He said killing me is nothing to them. I recorded the whole conversation and used it in recording another video where I called people to rescue me because my life was in danger,” he added.
Balogun noted that he received a letter from Suleman’s lawyer on Monday, August 2, 2021, demanding a public apology within seven days.
He said, “I was still consulting with my lawyer when somebody called to notify me that some guys from Abuja were in Lagos to pick me up to Abuja. My wife, daughter and I immediately abandoned our home and went into hiding.”
The Ogun State indigene said he later received an invitation from the Special Enquiry Bureau, FCIID, Abuja.
The invite, signed by one ACP Yahaya Abubakar, asked Balogun to report at the FCIID on Wednesday, August 11, 2021.
Balogun’s lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, told PUNCH Metro on Wednesday that the Youtuber had been detained.
cell.
“The conditions are difficult and unnecessary given the nature of the offence. There is no reason why the police should get involved as he (Suleman) should have gone to court to file legal action if he felt he had been defamed.”
A spokesperson for the FCIID, Abuja, Funmi Eguaoje, said the bail conditions were normal.
She said, “If you bring a surety that is a civil servant, there should be verification from the office of the civil servant. There should be a letter of introduction from his boss to show that he is a staff member. They should bring it tomorrow (Thursday) and they will release him.”
Suleman’s counsel, Samuel Amune, said he only wrote Balogun to recant his statements and apologise for using derogatory remarks.
He added that he knew nothing about the petition.
Suleman, in a recent video, said he observed that Youtubers usually abused him to gain traffic to their page and make money.
He said he had decided to also get paid for the criticism.
The cleric said, “Now, when anybody wants to open a Youtube channel or have a blog, one of the strategies to make people get attracted to get lots of views and comments is to attack pastors and I am one of the major subject matters.
“I don’t have a problem with that because a million abuses cannot do nothing; but what I have a problem with is that at the end of the month, Youtube is paying you for insulting me.
“So, we need to have an agreement, go ahead and insult me but pay me. If you want to insult me, pay me and then do the videos, abuse me; you have my permission because one million videos cannot bring a true man of God down.”

VAN HORN, Texas — For 10 minutes and 10 seconds on Tuesday, Jeff Bezos wasn’t the richest man on Earth.
His Blue Origin company launched him into spaceflight history on Tuesday. Its first crewed New Shepard rocket blasted off from the Texas desert for the brief flight, also carrying his brother and the oldest and youngest people to ever have flown in space.
“Best day ever!” Bezos said after touchdown. “My expectations were high and they were dramatically exceeded.”
The capsule carrying the Blue Origin crew accelerated to more than three times the speed of sound before it reached beyond the 80 kilometer boundary (about 50 miles) the U.S. uses to mark the edge of space. The crew capsule reached an altitude of 107 kilometers (66 miles), and the rocket hit a top speed of 2,233 mph during the launch.
The crew floated in microgravity for a couple minutes, before the capsule returned and landed under a set of parachutes to end the mission after 10 minutes and 10 seconds.
The launch marked Blue Origin’s entrance into the market of private spaceflight, joining Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic — its direct competitor in the sector of suborbital tourism — and Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

REPORTS ON RELEASE OF BOKO HARAM FIGHTERS IN BORNO FALSE
The Nigerian Army (NA) has been notified of a media publication alleging that the NA has handed over 1009 Ex-Boko Haram fighters to Borno State government. The report also alleged that the event was shrouded in secrecy. This report, is obviously one of those attempts to dampen troops' morale and denegrate the NA, riding on the back of unsubstantiated report and misinformation.
While the NA would not want to join issues with the masterminds of this false narrative, it is important to set the records straight.
It is an indisputable fact that the ongoing Counter Terrorism Counter Insurgency Operations (CTCOIN) in the North East has led to the arrest of several terrorism/insurgency suspects. These suspects have been held in custody, while undergoing profiling and further investigations by experts from the Joint Investigation Centre (JIC) and those who are found culpable are usually handed over to prosecuting agencies accordingly, while those who are not implicated in terrorism and insurgency are cleared and released to the state government for rehabilitation before they are reintegrated into the society. These cleared suspects are therefore not ex Boko Haram fighters, as peddled in the said online report and as the masterminds would want to impress on the public. A total of 1009 cleared suspects, not ex fighters, were therefore released after this rigorous process on Wednesday 14 July 2021. It is also necessary to categorically state that the handing over of the cleared suspects was not shrouded in secrecy as it was witnessed by United Nations Humanitarian and government agencies, in tandem with global best practice.
The NA therefore urges the general public to discountenance this misinformation, as it is evidently a manipulation and distortion of the truth and reality of the event.

Leader of the separatist Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu, says he was actually arrested in Kenya and tortured in the East African country, before he was handed over to the Nigerian government. RECOMMENDED ARTICLES
“My client - Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, was actually abducted by the accursed Kenya's Special Police Force on the 18th of June 2021 at their International Airport, and consequently taken to an undisclosed residence under dehumanising conditions.
“He was tortured and subjected to all forms of inhuman treatment which worsened his health condition. He was illegally detained for eight good days in Kenya before being transferred to their Nigerian counterpart," Ejiofor says.
Ejiofor adds that Kanu was "investigated on a bogus charge while in their custody, ostensibly, awaiting to be handed over after their findings proved him innocent of all the spurious allegations. They later beckoned on their Nigerian counterpart to take over.
“The Kenya government was deeply involved in the abduction, detention and ill-treatment of my client before the illegal handover to their Nigerian counterpart. “A scan of his heart showed that the heart has enlarged by 13% due to the dehumanizing treatment meted to him. There will be need for immediate proper medical examination and attention for him.
“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu conveyed his goodwill message to all IPOB family members worldwide, and craved for your unrelentless prayers. We are going back to the court for the needful. Other details cannot be entertained here.
"His fortified legal team will address these infractions at the proper forum as we progress. Other details on our legal strategy, may not be made public.
“With Chukwuokike Abiama on our side, Victory is assured. For if God Almighty be for us, who can be against us?"
The Denial During a press briefing in Abuja, Nigeria's capital city, on Friday, July 2, Kenya's High Commissioner to Nigeria, Wilfred Machage, had challenged anyone with proof of Kanu's arrest in his country to come forward.
“I want to address this allegation by denying that Kenya was involved in the alleged arrest and extradition to Nigeria of Mr. Kanu, and I repeat, I want to address this allegation by denying that Kenya was involved.
These allegations are fictional, imaginary and exist to fuel antagonistic feelings between the southern section of the Nigerian people against the Kenya people, and indeed many countries have been accused.
“Rwanda, Czech Republic, Britain, Ethiopia and God knows which other country. I want to challenge anyone with facts relating to this arrest through Kenya to present these facts,” Machage had said.
First arrested on October 14, 2015, Kanu jumped bail and fled Nigeria in 2017 after the invasion of his home in Abia State, southeastern Nigeria.
He will be re-arraigned on July 26, 2021 on an 11-count charge bordering on terrorism, treasonable felony, managing an unlawful society, publication of defamatory material, illegal possession of firearms, improper importation of goods, among
"Kanu had also formed the Eastern Security Network which the police have accused of being the masterminds of attacks on police stations, prisons and symbols of democracy in the zone"
The hopes of Kingsley Kanu, brother of detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, that Britain secures the release of his sibling may have been dashed with a British document indicating that the United Kingdom can’t get nationals out of prisons abroad.
Kanu, who was born on September 25, 1967, is a holder of Nigerian and British passports. Upon his arrest on Sunday and extradition from a foreign country, he was arraigned before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday for terrorism-related charges and has since been remanded in the custody of the Department of State Services.
Kanu’s brother, Kingsley, who said his sibling was intercepted in East African country Kenya, had since called on the UK government to secure his release.
“The British High Commission in Nigeria must insist upon my brother’s immediate release. They must guarantee his safety and security.
“Nnamdi Kanu must be returned home to the UK to his wife and his sons who live here. The Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab, must make clear to the Nigerian authorities that they will not tolerate the unlawful detention of British citizens and that the UK Government condemns the Nigerians and Kenyans for undermining the rule of law.
“Foreign Secretary, Raab must be clear. There will be consequences for those who resort to extraordinary rendition. The British Government must insist upon justice for Nnamdi Kanu,” Kingsley had said.
The Head of Communications, British High Commission in Abuja, Dean Hurlock, told The PUNCH that the British Government is ready to provide “consular assistance” for the IPOB leader and “currently in the process of seeking clarification from the Nigerian government about the circumstances of the arrest”. When our correspondent sought clarification on “consular assistance”, the British official referred him to the UK manual on ‘Support for British nationals abroad: A guide’.
The document read in part, “We can offer you information about the local prison or remand system, including visiting arrangements, mail and censorship, privileges, work possibilities, and social and welfare services. We can also explain where there are different regulations for remand prisoners and sentenced prisoners. For example, in some countries, prisoners are allowed to send more mail when they are on remand.
“We cannot get you out of prison or detention, nor can we get special treatment for you because you are British. If however you are not treated in line with internationally accepted standards we will consider approaching local authorities. This may include if your trial does not follow internationally recognised standards for a fair trial or is unreasonably delayed compared to local cases.
“With your permission, we can consider taking up a complaint about ill-treatment, personal safety, or discrimination with the police or prison authorities.
“Consular staff will keep in regular contact with you, either by visiting personally or by telephone/ letter. The frequency of visits will depend on local prison conditions and your personal circumstances.”
“If you are a dual British national in the country of your other nationality (for example, a dual Nigerian-British national in Nigeria), we would NOT normally offer you support or get involved in dealings between you and the authorities of that state. We may make an exception to this rule if, having looked at the circumstances of the case, we consider that you are vulnerable and we have humanitarian concerns.
“We would not normally attend a court case involving a British national, and we cannot influence the outcome of any trial,”it added. For years, Kanu had a running battle with the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari, over his quest for the secession of the South-East geopolitical zone.
The Buhari regime had in September 2017 outlawed IPOB and declared that the activities of the group constituted an act of terrorism and illegality. Before then, Kanu was arrested and jailed but released from the Kuje Prison in Abuja after meeting bail conditions. The IPOB leader later jumped bail and fled the country and operated from overseas before he was reportedly captured on Sunday.
Kanu had also formed the Eastern Security Network which the police have accused of being the masterminds of attacks on police stations, prisons and symbols of democracy in the zone but Kanu had denied the allegations. Before he jumped bail in 2017, Kanu was facing 11 charges including terrorism, treasonable felony, managing an unlawful society, publication of defamatory matter, illegal possession of firearms and improper importation of goods.
The case has been scheduled for July 26 and July 27 2021 for resumption of trial while Kanu has been remanded with the Department of State Services.
Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, the principal surety to the embattled self-acclaimed Biafran leader, Nnamdi Kanu may on July 26 apply for refund of his N100M forfeited to the federal government when Kanu jumped bail .
Kanu, who jumped bail since 2019, has just been rearrested and will appear in Federal High Court for continuation of his criminal trial on terrorism charges.
The senator representing Abia North Senatatorial district in the Senate had forfeited the huge sum in liue of his inability to produce Kanu in court to face the criminal trial. Abaribe was said to have been given opportunities five times to produce Kanu as required by law but could not meet up.
In one of his appearances in court, the Senator has alleged that that the federal government caused Kanu to jump bail and escaped out of the country when armed soldiers allegedly invaded his family house.
He prayed the court to hold the federal government responsible for the escape and spare him the pain of forfeiting the bail bonds Justice Binta Nyako, however, rejected the prayers of the surety and ordered him to either forfeit the bail bonds or stand in place of Kanu for criminal trial on terrorism and reasonable felony punishable with either death or life imprisonment.
The Senate minority leader was said to have subsequently opted for lesser punishment and thereafter forfeited the huge sum.
Although DAILY POST could not reach Abaribe for comments, one of his lawyers, Maxwell Okpara, said that the legal team of Abaribe will apply for refund of the money for their client.
“It is a settled law that once escapee defendant in a criminal matter is rearrested, the surety who forfeited bond must be refunded.
“It does not matter whether the escapee accused person is rearrested by the surety or somebody else as in the instant matter. The bottom line is that our client must be refunded to the tune of N100M he had earlier forfeited in the course of the suretyship,” the lawyer said.
