musicwriter: This is actually an unnecessary question once you realize that in the dim period of human history, Igbos and Yorubas used to be one clan of a few hundred or few thousands people. But at some point they got split into two. This would have happens several thousands of years ago- could be up to 100,000 years ago.
In the book: the history and geography of human genes, the author, Luigi Sforsa, sampled Genes of people and nations around the world; including African ethnic groups. As you can see below (marked red) he showed that one clan split into two, went their separate ways to become Yoruba and Igbo.
This is what he observed with DNA data, indeed, that's why many Igbo and Yoruba word means the same thing.
Words like Akara would have been in use thousands of years ago before the split occurred.
See attachment
The information you have here on the DNA sample data is interesting BUT it ABSOLUTELY has NOTHING to do with the the etymology of the Yoruba word "AKARA" being discussed here. I will bring in more CLARITY here to set the records strait. Some ethnic groups (such as Igalas) were NO doubt formed as mixtures of different ethnicities within the last 700 years) rather than a split of clans.
Those few Yoruba words you find in Igbo language are BORROWED words (or LOAN words) and did NOT arise as a result of any past ancestral ties or usage for thousands of years or through DNA linkages. Anambra and Enugu States have indigenous Igala communities and have been in those areas for over 500 years. Igala language is officially classified as a Yoruboid language (just like Itsekiri) because about 65% of the words are mutually intelligible with Yoruba language due to the presence of "Yoruba ancestral lineages" in Igala in addition to Edos and their mixing with migrant Jukuns from Wukari in the present Taraba State according to a 2017 interview granted to Saturday Punch by the last Attah of Igalaland, Michael Ameh Oboni. All these mixings of Yorubas, Jukuns, Edos, and others, etc, to form Igala at the Niger River confluence area in modern Kogi State region are estimated to have happened within the last 800 years. There's also a noticeable presence of some Idoma words In Igala language.
Taking the above historical facts into consideration, we can see that words such as "Omi" for Water, "Ogede" for Plantain and Banana, "Ifa" for Ifa divination, "Iba" for Fever, "Akuko" for C.ock, then the numbers 1 to 100 and beyond mean EXACTLY the same thing in Yoruba and Igala. Other few words comparing Yoruba and Igala such as "Ewa and Egwa" meaning Beans, "Ise and Iche" meaning Work, "Osu and Ochu" meaning Month, "Ogun and Ogwu" meaning Medicine AND War respectively, etc, have slight spelling differences based on dialectic variations. Igala dialectic pronunciations are CLOSER to those of North-Eastern Yorubas than that of Central Yoruba.
There is a 2017 thread that was created by the NL moniker IgalaSchool (who is of Igala descent) that extensively shows the very STRONG similarities between Igala words and Yoruba words. NO other language in Nigeria comes close to Yoruba language in similarities like Igala (aside from the Itsekiris who also have direct Yoruba ancestral bloodlines from Uhe (Ife), Ilaje (especially from Ugboland) and Ijebu. NOT even Central Igbo language (which is a completely different language strain comes close except for those few noticeable Yoruba words that were Loaned or adopted in recent history into Ibo lexicon such as Egwa, Ogede, Akara, Egusi, (as shown in the "Longman English-Ibo Dictionary" co-written by an erudite Ibo scholar) where the Yoruba word EGUSI which is corrupted from the Yoruba word Egunsi (Egusi) and spelled in Ibo as "Egwusi" with the letter "W" added.
Another thread in the NL Food Section thrashed this Egusi etymology out once and for all in 2024 with the screenshots of the "Longman Ibo-English Dictionary" being attached for all to see (I've attached it again right BELOW) after some ignorant young Ibos started insulting the Yorubas and claiming the etymology of Egusi is from them BUT the Yoruba folks brought out the screenshot evidence from the "Longman Ibo-English Dictionary" showing that Egunsi (Egusi) is a LOAN WORD from YOR (Yoruba language) and corrupted to Egwusi in Central Ibo language and that shut them up completely including the FACT that "Elili" or "Enini" is the real Ibo word for (Melon seeds or Egusi) and that varies from one Ibo community to another.
In rounding off, the people now collectively known as Ibos (Igbos) today (after British Colonial rule commenced) were heavily influenced by the food types, clothing, and loan words in the past few years by their surrounding neighbors of different ethnic groups such as the Ibibios, Edos, Annangs, Ijaws, Igalas, etc, and this is how the Igala RED CHIEFTAINCY cap (the red chieftain cap is largely indigenous to the Middle Belt of Nigeria and worn by the Igalas, some of the Yoruba communities of Kwara and Kogi States, Ebiras, Idomas, Jukuns, etc) which the Igalas introduced into the Nsukka area within the last 400 years was later copied by other smaller Igboid clans of the East of Nigeria as part of their dressing. These groups NEVER even had direct contact with the Igalas.
Akell: Early Roots (Post-Colonial Era): The seeds of the current instability were sown in the post-colonial era, marked by weak governance, ethnic tensions, and competition for resources. The Rwandan genocide in 1994 significantly destabilized the region, with an influx of Rwandan refugees, including Hutu militias (Interahamwe), into eastern DRC. This led to the First Congo War (1996-1997), involving several neighboring countries and ultimately ousting Mobutu Sese Seko.
The Congo Wars (1998-2003): The Second Congo War, often called Africa's World War, followed shortly after. It drew in multiple African nations, each with their own interests, and involved numerous armed groups vying for control of the DRC's vast mineral wealth. This conflict resulted in millions of deaths, primarily from disease and starvation, and left a legacy of deep-seated mistrust and violence.
The M23 and Beyond (2009-Present): While officially declared over in 2003, the conflicts in eastern DRC never truly ended. Numerous armed groups continue to operate in the region, including the M23 (March 23 Movement), a primarily Tutsi-led rebel group that emerged in 2012. The M23's resurgence has been particularly destabilizing, leading to renewed fighting, displacement, and human rights abuses. Other prominent groups include the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), a Hutu militia group, and various Mai-Mai militias, often formed along ethnic lines to defend local communities.
Key Drivers of the Conflict: * Resource Curse: The DRC's vast mineral wealth (coltan, gold, diamonds, etc.) fuels the conflict. Armed groups and foreign actors exploit these resources, contributing to the cycle of violence. * Ethnic Tensions: Competition for land and resources often exacerbates existing ethnic divisions, leading to intercommunal clashes. * Weak Governance: The DRC's government has struggled to establish effective control over the eastern region, creating a power vacuum that armed groups have filled. * Regional Interference: Neighboring countries have been accused of supporting various armed groups, further complicating the conflict. * Land Disputes: Land ownership issues are a major source of conflict, particularly in densely populated areas.
God1000: It's a complicated story, but here's is a brief history of this conflict, The origin of the current fighting can partly be traced back to the genocide in Rwanda in 1994.
Tutsi is one of Rwandan subtribe living in Eastern DRC since the colonial period. They own properties such as land , houses , farms etc but they've complained of marginalization from the government of congo, accusing DRC of treating them as non- residents or aliens.
The eastern Congo where Tutsi occupies is well endowed with natural resources such as Diamond, cobalt and Gold
Technically Kagame benefits from the minerals through his tribe the Tutsi living in Eastern Congo, the reason for his involvement in the civil war happening in Goma and North Kivu.
We also have other local and international actors who are fighting for their own interest in DRC
Both the M23 rebels backed by Rwanda and Rwandan soldiers are fighting Congolese government in eastern DRC
Similar to what happened in eastern Ukraine when Russia invaded and took crimea in 2014, Putin felt the ethnic Russians living in eastern Ukraine were being persecuted by the government of Ukraine
But I don't support what Paul kagame is doing, he's destabilizing that region
praxs: Here is a brief recap of what is actually happening. Before anything else, let’s start from pre-border era.
It’s a known fact that people that resides in between borders of two countries, will definitely have its people separated in between the two border countries. E.g, Hausa people of sokoto, zamafa, katsina state borders have its people both in Nigeria and Niger. After British drew the border lines which we all call countries today, the Hausa people of Niger became Niger citizens while Hausa people of Nigeria became Nigeria citizens.
Tutsi are a tribe found in border town between Congo (kivu province) and Rwanda. To be clear, president paul Kagame is a Tutsi by tribe. For several years, the Tutsi in Congo(M23) have been crying of marginalization by the Congolese government. The Congolese government have asserted severally during the past years that Tutsi are Rwandese citizens and not Congolese. Because of these marginalization, the Tutsis in Congo had to pick up arms to defend themselves and their people from exploitation of resources in their local region in Congo by the Congolese government. This became the genesis of the war. Now that the Congolese government doesn’t recognize them as Congolese, the M23 needs money and resources to sustain it self and its militant. Their region being rich in minerals, they delve into mining of the resources for export so they can get money. Part2
adamusuleiman3: Following the persistent insecurity that has taken its toll on the Southeast region, affecting businesses, individuals, and school children, many indigenes from communities and towns in the region are now terrified and are relocating to other nearby states where they feel safer.
Besides violent agitators, cultists, and kidnappers, the violent activities of youths if not checked, would be worse than the activities of gunmen who kidnap, rob, and sometimes on extreme assassination missions, kill and behead their victims.
Many have taken their destinies into their own hands and decided to relocate to safer places to avoid sad stories.
While Anambra and Imo States seem the worst hit, other states in the region are also affected in various degrees.
According to investigations, micro businesses in Nigeria’s Southeastern states lost an average of N4.618 trillion ($10.495 billion) in one year to the sit-at-home order that the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, imposed on the region.
While the South East governments battle to stem the raging violence in the region, individuals are taking their destinies into their own hands.
Asaba and nearby towns to the rescue
Eloka Obi recently relocated his building materials business and his family from Awka to Asaba to resettle.
According to Eloka, nobody crosses the Niger Bridge on a Monday. People who travel on Mondays usually cross the Niger Bridge a day before to Asaba from where they made their trips or wait till Tuesday. Those entering the South-East cross the bridge on Sundays and other days but not on a Monday. Criminals officially use Mondays to operate publicly in the South-East.
“Gradually, people are beginning to understand that it makes more sense living in Delta, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom than living in the South-East. If you are living in Onitsha or Awka, your best bet is Asaba and if you are living in Imo or Abia, your best bet is Rivers or Cross River. We are taking our destinies into our own hands. Those who are staying in the South-East region have also devised other means of survival.
“People don’t reveal their movements to others. People don’t move in exotic cars and those who do especially those who came home during Christmas moved with plainclothes security officials. People dress down. They avoid public places and paying visits or letting people visit them anyhow. Everybody is coded and movements are coded. People are discreet in their movements and when you see somebody during the daytime, chances are, they will relocate to sleep elsewhere by night. Some sleep in hotels and never the same hotel all the time. They code how they move and that is what insecurity has done to the region,” Eloka revealed.
“In Asaba which is my new home, a lot of people have relocated and have even into neighbouring towns near Asaba. There are many people from South-East states now living in Asaba and the number increases every day. People try to minimize having to cross the Niger Bridge into Onitsha. Land is now expensive in Asaba and it’s funny when people from the South-East zone say they are travelling home but end up in their new family houses in Asaba from where they connect to kith and kin in the South-East. When you hear people like Senator Ned Nwoko advocating for Anioma State as the sixth South-East state, just know he is making sense. Many Igbo have left their homes in the South-East and built homes in other places nearby.
“There is insecurity everywhere, even in Asaba here. How far can you run from home? The only thing is that gunmen attacks are not here. There is no sit-at-home. My business opens every day as I want it. When I was in Onitsha, my customers sometimes had problems coming into Onitsha on Mondays. I usually meet them halfway by bringing goods to keep at Asaba so they won’t have the problem of Monday’s sit-at-home. When I found out it favours them that way, I opened a branch of the business at Asaba while keeping the main branch at Onitsha.
But I relocated my wife and children because I’m not comfortable with my children missing school every Monday. Asaba is also Igbo but it’s part of Delta State and the South-South. This thing we are saying is not a joke. Some relocated up to Benin City and Lagos because business is what we are known for. If you recall, Cubana Chief Priest relocated a business from Imo to Lagos due to insecurity. If you go to any community in Nigeria or even the whole of Africa and you don’t see an Igbo businessman, just run for your life.
Also commenting on the issue, Mrs Ego Eriya, a landlord in Asaba said the city is the new Abuja. “People are coming into Asaba in droves from across the Niger. I don’t know if it’s due to insecurity but they are relocating their businesses and families. There are movements from across the Niger into Asaba and so many projects going on.”
Living in South-East had been horrifying—Chekwas Okorie
These movements and relocations of families from dangerous spot to relatively safer towns or cities isn't NEW as those of us who are older know that back in the late 1990s to the 2000s, when a lot of insecurity such as vicious armed robberies attacks on residential areas and luxury buses, kidnappings for ransom and more hit the South East of Nigeria especially under the former Governor Mbadinuju of Anambra State, some Igbo men especially from Anambra and Abia States relocated their family members and trading outfits to other Nigerian cities such as Port Harcourt, Lagos Stste, Ibadan, the FCT, Asaba, Calabar, etc. This is why there was a sharp spike in the presence of Igbos living in these cities or locations. I remember over 10 years ago before he became a Governor, Alex Otti told a newspaper how a friend of his based in Aba had to close down his factory and relocated to Lagos State because Lagos State was safer (then under Governor Babatunde Fashion and his fantastic Lagos State Security Trust Fund OR LSSTF which incidentally had the first Chairman as the current Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu of Lagos). I ALSO read an article back in the 2000s of a young Anambra guy based in Lagos State who had to move his elderly parents from Anambra because elderly parents in the villages were being relentlessly targeted by Kidnappers for ransom with millions of Naira being paid by their Lagos-based children to secure their release, and after the payments, those bloody criminals still killed some of those elderly people.
It's the Vanguard correspondent in the East of Nigeria that conducted this interview with known Igbos such as the politician, Chekwas Okorie and CLEARLY Asaba was mentioned SEVERAL times in the article as a town where some Anambra residents who can afford it have moved their families to contrary to the putrid and highly irresponsible LIES that some soulless trolls on Page 1 of this thread were telling to deflect attention from the topic and derail the thread. Some of the Igbo folks in the article commended the Enugu State Government for ensuring good security BUT suggested that Anambra and Imo are the worse hit by insecurity.
diamond68: Ogun is a white god. That's the god of iron That's the white man's blessings
Thinking deeply about what you posted, the White folks, Africans, Asians, and others have created ancient and modern inventions out of "iron" and other metal alloys. Iron has been key throughout the ages for the purpose of WAR and PEACE. So, you have a point from the bolded.
MightySparrow: The gods of the blackman is inferior to oyinbo.
See names like Fatoyinbo, Oguntoyinbo
Comparing their gods to rank even less than oyinbo.
On the contrary, the interpretation of those 2 Yoruba names (Ifatoyinbo and Oguntoyinbo) do NOT infer inferiority. NOBODY would ever agree to use such names that would suggest total inferiority to the European White man
Ifatoyinbo (Fatoyinbo) and Oguntoyinbo in my estimation emphasizes here that the Ifa spiritual cosmology and Ogun deity are capable of "MATCHING and TAMING" the POWERS of the European White men or colonists.
A 🇺🇸 US air ambulance plane carrying six people, including a young girl, has crashed in a residential area of Philadelphia causing chaotic scenes on the ground.
The Learjet 55 aircraft departed the Northeast Philadelphia Airport on Friday evening and been travelling to Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri before it lost control shortly after takeoff.
The medical transport jet was carrying a child patient, her mother and four others aboard crashed into a Philadelphia neighborhood shortly after takeoff Friday evening, exploding in a fireball that engulfed several homes.
Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, which operated the Learjet 55, said in a statement: “We cannot confirm any survivors.” There was no immediate word whether anyone on the ground was killed.
All six people aboard were from Mexico. The child had been treated in Philadelphia for a life-threatening condition and was being transported home, according to Jet Rescue spokesperson Shai Gold. The flight’s final destination was to have been Tijuana after a stop in Missouri.
The patient and her mother were on board along with four crew members. Gold said this was a seasoned crew and everyone involved in these flights goes through rigorous training.
“When an incident like this happens, it’s shocking and surprising,” Gold told The Associated Press. “All of the aircraft are maintained, not a penny is spared because we know our mission is so critical.”
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said at a news conference late Friday that officials expected fatalities in the “awful aviation disaster.”
“We know that there will be loss,” he said.
The plane was registered in Mexico. Jet Rescue is based in Mexico and has operations both there and in the U.S.
The crash came just two days after the deadliest U.S. air disaster in a generation. On Wednesday night, an American Airlines jet carrying 60 passengers and four crew members collided in midair in Washington, D.C., with an Army helicopter carrying three soldiers. There were no survivors.
The Philadelphia crash was the second fatal incident in 15 months for Jet Rescue. In 2023 five crewmembers were killed when their plane overran a runway in the central Mexican state of Morelos and crashed into a hillside.
In Philadelphia, a doorbell camera captured video of the plane plunging in a streak of white and exploding as it hit the ground near a shopping mall and major roadway.
“All we heard was a loud roar and didn’t know where it was coming from. We just turned around and saw the big plume,” said Jim Quinn, the owner of the doorbell camera.
Michael Schiavone, 37, was sitting at his home in Mayfair, a nearby neighborhood, when he heard a loud bang and his house shook. He said it felt like a mini earthquake and when he checked his home security camera, it looked like a missile came down.
“There was a large explosion, so I thought we were under attack for a second,” he said.
That plane crash was horrendous. With the 6 folks on board (including the child that needed medical treatment and her mother), the whole thing is just surreal. My deep condolences go to the families of those on board.
The Learjet 55 is a Mexican medical transport plane which crashed in the United States. The medical airline might file for bankruptcy since this is the second plane crash they are experiencing within a short time period. Let's hope they have significant insurance cover to keep operating since medical transport planes are very vital to the global medical industry.
Hemanwel: The collective task before Nigerians now is to ensure Tinubu vacates Aso Rock come 2027.
Yorobbers have been bullying and intimidating Nigerians because of Tinubu
2027 is going to be Yorobbers vs Nigerians.
Your relentless use of CLEAR incitements and hate speech on this NL Website has been APPALLING! You're here referring to the entire Yoruba folks [who number more than 70 million folks worldwide] on an open discussion forum [created and owned since 2005 by a Yoruba guy who hails from Ogun State as "Yorobbers?"]
How dark-minded and insidious can YOU be as an Igbo person despite living right in Lagos State which is Yorubaland based off of a few of your posts that I've seen.
Let me warn you right now. A lot of Benin-Edo, Esan-Edo, Ijaw, Igala, Ibibio and Ikwerre male and female YouTubers have made angry reaction videos calling out you Ibo Ipob members for the relentless hate speech and the illegal inclusion of their ancestral homelands in your bogus "biafra map plot" and threatened to deal with Igbos for any further unprovoked aggressions. I've seen these recent reaction videos and it further emphasizes that it's some of you Igbos that are the real troublemakers and aggressors here NOT other Nigerian ethnic groups contrary to the bogus post you made above and even a 2022 investigative BBC video documentary also exposed the criminal activities, murders, massive online disinformation and hate speech being spread on multiple online platforms such as FB by you paid male and female Igbo ipob members. You have been warned!
NgeneUkwenu: The Court of Appeal in Abuja has affirmed the January 18, 2018 order by Justice Abdu Kafarati of the Federal High Court, Abuja proscribing the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and designating it a terrorist organisation.
In a judgment on Thursday, a three-member panel of the appellate court was unanimous in holding that the federal government acted lawfully in proscribing the group, whose activities threatened the nation’s continued existence and the security of citizens.
GistMedia0: In shocking and heartbreaking footage that has emerged online, a wife was seen pinning down her husband and slapping him multiple times while he sobbed uncontrollably. The disturbing scene unfolded in a private room, with a man, believed to be a neighbor, seen trying to intervene, but the wife remained adamant in her actions, demanding her husband "shut up" as she continued her physical assault.
While the reason behind her furious rage remains unclear, the footage has sparked widespread outrage, drawing attention to the often-overlooked issue of domestic violence experienced by men at the hands of women. The shocking display of aggression and emotional cruelty has stirred a national conversation about the mistreatment and abuse that men sometimes face in relationships, bringing attention to the pressing need for discussions surrounding equality in domestic violence.
This CANNOT be a real situation because that young lady hitting the dude on the bed would get herself into trouble with the UK authorities for domestic abuse. She obviously knows she's being recorded.
It's obviously a short scene from a movie or a skit.
US President Donald Trump has ridiculed Denmark’s attempts to defend Greenland with additional patrols including two extra dog sleds as he insisted America would take control of the strategically crucial Arctic island.
Denmark’s defence minister has conceded that the Nordic country has not done enough to protect its autonomous territory of Greenland, but revealed plans to spend $1.5bn on two new inspection ships, two drones and two dog sled patrols after Trump renewed his interest in the island.
“I do believe Greenland, we’ll get — because it really has to do with freedom of the world. It has nothing to do with the United States, other than we’re the one that can provide the freedom. They [Denmark] can’t. They put two dog sleds there two weeks ago, they thought that was protection,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One this weekend.
Trump held a 45-minute phone call with Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen last week, which five current and former senior European officials described to the Financial Times as fiery and confrontational.
The officials said the Danish government was in “crisis mode” after Trump took the unprecedented step of refusing to rule out military action to take territory from a Nato ally and threatened targeted tariffs against it. The US already has the sole military base in Greenland, in the north of the island.
Denmark’s military presence on Greenland is currently limited to an Arctic Command of just 75 people and equipment consisting of four ships, a surveillance plane and several dog sled patrols.
orikoku: This guy suppose don face firing squad nah. Why he's still breathing.
I completely agree with you here. By NOT rapidly concluding the criminal cases against this bloody armed robber, murderer and kidnapper from Anambra State (who killed and viciously kidnapped people in his Igboland, Edo State and in Lagos State), it further affirms that the Nigerian criminal justice system is a major ENABLER of crime. Now, his irresponsible lawyer is trying to use sentiments to sway public opinion against a dangerous criminal. This criminal even had the audacity to use the ill-gotten money made from his armed robbery and kidnapping operations to move into a house with his family in the elite Magodo Estate (where prominent former staff and big shots of the Lagos State Government and other powerful business leaders live) while pretending to be a legitimate business person.
The other foxy bearded Igbo pastor (called "Reverend King" who claimed to have studied sociology in Brazil and was using mind-control on his followers in Lagos) has been sentenced to death for brutalizing and killing his female church member by the court but the silly Governors have failed to sign the death warrant.

While some posters might mean well, I realized from reading parts of this thread that there's a vast array of posters here who DON'T have anything positive to offer but BANAL comments and a few even claimed you are NOT based in the United Kingdom. Regardless, those of us who have posted "functional information" here on the thread based off of your original post are ALSO giving out useful information to others who might be walking in your shoes as well.
OboOlora: Dead? Nooooooooooooooooooo That's sarcasm but the UK is a very depressing environment so I can understand new takers that even have shitty jobs like care jobs and have to work with old, sick racists for minimum wage lool
@OboOlora
Your "Dead? Noooooooo..." feedback... Cracked me up.
Gotcha... "Sarcasm."
Indeed, to add to that, the UK is a largely conservative society, and previous studies have shown that the closer you get to the colder North Pole (and South Pole), the more "depressing" it can get. Regardless, individually, we can always create our customized "positive realities" based off of our needs and wants and NOT have to depend largely on others who don't know us to do that for us.
Great100000: With the Donald Trump administration’s mass deportation efforts now in full swing, many undocumented immigrants in the United States are facing the risk of removal; so to avoid deportation from the US, it is essential for migrants to ensure they have the correct legal documents.
These documents vary depending on the individual’s immigration status, and having the right paperwork can be crucial for staying in the US legally.
According to BBC News, over 3,000 Nigerians living in the US without legal documents are at risk of deportation. These individuals are listed on the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) non-detained docket, with final orders of removal in place since November 2024.
Fox News, as cited by BBC, reports that Nigeria is the second-highest African country with citizens scheduled for deportation, following Somalia, with other countries such as Ghana and Senegal also being affected.
Increased immigration enforcement under Trump Immigration enforcement has intensified under President Trump, who has made it a priority to remove unauthorized immigrants.
A nationwide operation on January 27th, 2025, led to the arrest of 956 people, following earlier raids that resulted in 286 arrests on Saturday, 593 on Friday, and 538 on Thursday.
As of November 2024, over one million non-US citizens were listed on the ICE non-detainee register, all subject to final orders of removal. Many of these individuals entered the US illegally, contributing to the growing number of deportations.
Key documents to stay legally in the US
To avoid deportation, immigrants must have the necessary documents in place. The basic requirement is:
• Valid passport, along with the relevant visa for the purpose of their stay—such as a work, family, or asylum visa.
• Proof of relationship to a US citizen or sponsor may also be required depending on the situation.
Additional documents such as:
• Employment offers
• Birth certificates
• Marriage certificates
• Financial records may also be needed to prove that you can support yourself while in the US. Without these documents, immigrants are at higher risk of deportation.
Documents required for different immigration Pathways
The documents required to remain in the US depend on the type of immigration status or pathway the individual is following.
• Permanent residency (Green Card): To apply for a Green Card, you will need a valid passport, an immigration visa, Form I-551 (Green Card), and proof of relationship to a US citizen or lawful permanent resident if applicable.
• Employment-based immigration: For employment-based immigration, applicants need Form I-766 (Employment Authorization Document), a job offer letter from a US employer, Form I-140 (Immigrant Petition for Alien Worker), and potentially a Labor Certification.
• Family-based immigration: Immigrants seeking family-based immigration must submit Form I-130 (Petition for Alien Relative), along with birth certificates and marriage certificates if applicable.
• Non-immigrant visas (temporary stay): If applying for a temporary visa (such as for work, study, or tourism), you will need a valid passport, the appropriate non-immigrant visa, and supporting documents, such as an acceptance letter from a US school for a student visa.
Staying legally in the US:
• With mass deportations becoming a central focus of the Trump administration, it is keen for immigrants to have the proper legal documents to remain in the US.
• Regularly checking and ensuring your immigration status is up to date can help avoid deportation and ensure compliance with US immigration laws.
• Seeking legal advice if necessary can help immigrants better navigate the complex immigration process.
yoruboid: The Nigerian Export Promotion Council has announced a remarkable 20.79 per cent increase in the value of the country’s non-oil exports, reaching a total of $5.456bn in 2024.
It stated that the amount surpassed the $4.5bn generated in 2023.
The Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, Nonye Ayeni, disclosed the figures while addressing the media on the performance report of the non-oil export sector for 2024 on Friday in Abuja.
She said the significant growth reflects the resilience and diversification of Nigeria’s export sector beyond crude oil, a shift aimed at reducing the country’s reliance on oil revenue.
According to her, the surge in non-oil exports was driven by increased economic activity in the agriculture, manufacturing, and solid minerals sectors.
She noted that the growth was largely propelled by the expansion of agricultural exports, including cocoa seeds, cocoa butter, sesame seeds, and cashew nuts, alongside a rise in the export of urea and manufactured goods.
She said, “Despite economic challenges and the global downturn, the Council, through collaborations with relevant agencies and institutions, has contributed to economic diversification, achieving an impressive non-oil export performance of $5.456bn in 2024. This represents a significant 20.79 per cent increase compared to the $4.517bn recorded in 2023
“This achievement can be attributed to the active diversification of the economy through the non-oil sector, with a focus on promoting agriculture, solid minerals, and manufacturing.

Glimpsetv: A transgender woman has taken to social media to call out the Donald Trump administration for changing her gender to male on her new passport.
According to her, all her official documents had already been updated to reflect her female identity, and she had also undergone full surgical transition. She shared an image of her new passport, which displayed her name, Perysian Zaya Mehki, but listed her sex as "M" (Male), despite the photo showing her as a woman.
Reading from the email she received regarding the change, she quoted: “The sex was corrected on your passport application. The changes were made for one of the following reasons to match our records.”
She went on to explain that she had a passport as a child, which listed her gender as male. Based on this, she claimed that if a person previously had a passport reflecting a particular sex, the government would revert to that sex regardless of any legal or medical transitions made later.
Frustrated by the situation, she announced her intention to take legal action against the government. She also shared her email, inviting legal experts who could assist her in challenging the decision.
Stating that she is now a fully transitioned adult with no male characteristics, she expressed deep concern over the dangers this incorrect gender marker could pose while traveling. She alleged that the administration was deliberately targeting transgender individuals, attempting to intimidate them and push them out of public life.
However, she declared that she would not be silenced or forced into hiding. Instead, she vowed to fight back, asserting that this action was a direct violation of her rights as an American citizen under the Equal Rights Amendment.

Your "sense of humor" is on another level tbh... This winter must be resetting a lot of brain cells right now. So, based off of your last sentence, you're wishing the OP dead or what?
laivwire: You need to add some context. What are the issues?
Are you not having enough money? Are you not having someone to talk to? Are you tired of your job type? Is it a health issue with the cold? It's winter so maybe you need more sunlight or vitamin D.
Those 5 questions right above are succinctly stated.
Indeed, the cold winters are known to trigger body hormones that lead to a state of melancholy or depression.
femi4: You just don't want to learn , that it's often said that way doesn't make it correct grammatically. What is acceptable is different from what is correct grammatically.
Return to base is grammatically correct
@femi4
Just to chip in some facts to your convo... You are absolutely correct. "Return to base" is standard English devoid of tautology.
I've heard some Nigerians incorrectly say: "Reverse the car back" OR "Reverse back" which are referred to as TAUTOLOGY and both are grammatically WRONG! That's pure TAUTOLOGY in the English language.
The standard usage is "Reverse the car" OR simply "Reverse."
Every language on Earth has rules and standards which must be followed when having conversations or writing in specific languages.
Coldie: I have been in the UK for sometime now and the system has totally swallowed me, I feel very depressed and I want to leave permanently. I can only visit but not live there anymore. What’s the possibility.
How is Nigeria at present?
How much do I need to start back?
I deduce you are a male so, money and work-related issues tend to affect us more as part of the challenges of everyday living.
If you're having job-related and/or financial issues due to higher cost of living and taxes, then you have to get other backup skills such as intentional savings and financial literacy using different financial assets as delivery tools to create multiple streams of income. So, go for a paid-for training and get a mentor to guide you within the UK Diaspora Nigerian community so as to learn how to invest in the global financial markets from anywhere in the world by simply using you phone or laptop. In the event that you choose to return to Nigeria, you can still put the financial literacy skills learned to full effects.
You can always travel back to the United Kingdom for leisure and business. Don't EVER up... You have the unlimited power of a warrior within and 5 years down the road when you read this, you'll smile that you took the right decisions today!
ogaemma: Lt. Col. T.E. Alari, a Fearless Leader and Defender of the Nation
In the face of unparalleled danger, there are individuals who embody the true essence of courage, leadership, and sacrifice. Lt. Col. T.E. Alari was one such man a gallant officer who stood as a bulwark against terror, giving his life so others might live in peace.
The Commanding Officer of the 149 Battalion, Lt. Col. Alari, was a nightmare to insurgents. His resolute determination and strategic brilliance in combat had dealt devastating blows to the ranks of ISWAP, earning him a reputation as a fearless leader who did not shy away from leading from the front. His name struck fear into the hearts of terrorists, and his presence on the battlefield inspired confidence among his troops.
On Jan. 24, 2025, while leading an operation in the Timbuktu Triangle, a bastion of terrorist activity in Damboa, Lt. Col. Alari once again demonstrated the true essence of leadership. Under his command, the 149 Battalion had successfully disrupted insurgent strongholds, neutralizing scores of terrorists and forcing them into retreat. But in a desperate last ditch effort, ISWAP insurgents deployed a Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) against his troops.
The VBIED was intercepted and destroyed by the troops, but the shrapnel from the explosion tragically took the lives of those closest to the blast, including Lt. Col. Alari, who, as always, was at the front, leading his men. Even in the face of certain death, his bravery remained unwavering a true testament to his character.
Lt. Col. Alari was not just a soldier; he was a protector, a mentor, and a patriot. His relentless pursuit of justice and his commitment to the safety of his country will forever be remembered. He epitomized the qualities of a selfless leader always prioritizing the wellbeing of his troops and the mission above his own safety.
Beyond the battlefield, Lt. Col. Alari was a devoted son, husband, and father. His family, though bereaved, can take solace in the legacy he leaves behind a legacy of valor, service, and love for his nation.
As Nigeria mourns the loss of one of its finest, we must honor his memory by continuing the fight he so bravely led. Lt. Col. T.E. Alari’s sacrifice will not be in vain. His name will forever be etched in the annals of history as a hero who stood against terror and gave his all for his country.
Those are some of the operational challenges on the battlefields around the world. This wasn't a case of a direct attack on the brave Nigerian troops by those criminals, BUT the result of "flying shrapnels" from the VBIED after it was intercepted and destroyed by Nigerian troops. It must have been a pretty powerful VBIED or an error of timing was made while destroying it because proper clearance should have been made before detonation the VBIED.
They were all brave Nigerian troops regardless. My deep condolences go out to the entire families of those who passed on.
adabaraabdul: No FCT is not the central town, FCT is the federal capital territory that most people mistake for Abuja. Abuja is just an area council (Abuja municipal area council AMAC). ABUJA IS IN FCT and also, kuje, gwagwalada, Abaji, kwali and Bwari.
Bwilliam: Mid 2021, my Dad suddenly announced that he has sold the main house in Abuja and is relocating to Lagos. My Bros' and I were like No wahala, after all it's his property. We will build our own houses one day.
[b]When things started happening in this Abuja, my Father finally told us that the reason he left was because one of his paramilitary friends whom he met at Institute of Security Studies, while he was taking a course there, indirectly told him that parts of Abuja and environ would become increasingly unsafe [/b]because terrorists Unknown gun men from the North were trooping in by the truck loads. In 2022, the Man that bought the house from my Dad was kidnapped from the very same house.
That relocation to Lagos was a very deft and intuitive move. Based off of crime patterns, those within the Intel network can easily predict what's gonna happen security-wise in a location with near-absolute accuracy. All that is required is a coordinated move with modern gadgets such as surveillance drones and attack drones to tackle these insidious criminals operating on the outskirts of towns and communities in the FCT because they are cowards who blend with the crowd and operate guerrilla style.
The same thing had been going on (with a recent resurgence) right in the creeks of the 3 states of Lagos, Ogun, and Ondo States with criminal bandits among the Ijaws from the Delta to Bayelsa States axis who engaged in relentless and vicious armed robberies and gang rapes, murders, kidnappings for ransom, System 2B pipeline vandalizations and petroleum stealing in the Arepo area of Ogun State, etc. Posh estates bordering Ogun and Lagos States areas such as Isheri North Scheme which falls in both Ogun and Lagos States where affected by kidnappings for ransom by the Ijaw criminals including the waterways of Ikorodu, Victoria Island, Ikoyi Island, in Lagos State. The intelligence agencies and even the late Intel officer Hassan Stan-Labo said in an interview he granted on Channels Television that he informed Goodluck Jonathan about how to tackle the Lagos and Ogun mass kidnappings for ransom, but NOTHING was done. Now, as of December 2024 right into 2025, there has been a resurgence of the Ijaw bandits in the Ogun and Lagos creeks who kidnapped the wife of a former Police boss in Arepo, Ogun State but the Police have rescued her, killed some of them and arrested 2 of the Ijaw criminals who confessed to the crime of kidnapping and other crimes.
It took the former President Buhari to order the launch of "Operation Awatse" in July 2016 (after a first-class in Lagos State, Oba of Iba Kingdom in Lagos was kidnapped right in his Palace by these Ijaw bandits and moved in a speed boat to their den right in the thick creeks of Arepo in Ogun State) BEFORE absolute peace was restored to Lagos, Ogun, and Ondo States after the Nigerian Air Force jet fighters launched several airstrikes on the bandits' camps right in the creeks of Arepo in Ogun State and the Ijaws even had anti-aircraft guns mounted on their speed boats as can be seen in the attached videos BELOW just like they do in the creeks of Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta. What those Ijaw bandits did was a total declaration of war on the Yoruba people back during the Goodluck Jonathan years, and that was already leading to anti-Ijaw feelings among the Yoruba folks for invading Yorubaland. But it ALSO turned out that some innocent Ijaws too were also victims of the kidnappings for ransom by these Ijaw criminals right in Bayelsa State where the sitting Governor Seriake Dickson's sister was kidnapped for a whopping 2 months while Seriake Dickinson said he would NOT pay any ransom for his sister's release! The Ijaw bandits did what they did because they depended on Egbesu, charms and their kinsman (GEJ) was in power as well, much the same way the foreign Fulani criminal elements were doing killing people on their farms all over Nigeria during the past governments headed by Fulani or any far-Northern Nigeria Presidents.
Police Arrest Two Suspected Kidnappers Of Ex-AIG Odumosu’s Wife
There is a growing anti-Fulani feeling among the Hausa folks and this is the time for the current President in Nigeria to put the Fulani bandits where they belong by crushing them totally because they have been Illegally flooding right into Nigeria from the Sahelian countries of Niger, Mali, Northern Cameroon, Guinea, and displasing the Hausas from their ancestral homelands as seen in videos made by some Hausas posted online. NO single Hausa Man has ever been President of Nigeria but it has always been the minority Fulanis ruling so, that contributed to a lot of the Fulani banditries.
