I've been following these global events on multiple media platforms for some hours now after the news broke. Nuclear and oil facilities were not targeted through precision attacks for now. The world has indeed entered a new phase FINALLY with unintended consequences taking place.

Crude oil prices will rise if things escalate from here on out. Brace up for more price increases globally.

PoliticsRe: Lagos Faces Risk Of Submergence Due To Climate Change by Konquest:
lagosdaily:
Lagos, Nigeria – Dr. Obafemi Kadri Hamzat, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, has sounded the alarm that Lagos faces a significant threat of submergence due to climate change. Speaking at the opening of the Lagos State Strategic Management Meeting, he emphasized the urgent need for swift and decisive action to mitigate the effects of rising sea levels and extreme weather conditions. Dr. Hamzat pointed out that cities like New York are already seeing residents relocate because of similar environmental issues, signaling a clear warning for Lagos.

Dr. Hamzat criticized the current physical planning efforts in Lagos, highlighting the lack of proper land management as a major factor in the state’s vulnerability to climate change. He explained that Lagos’s coastal geography, combined with its dense population, makes the city particularly susceptible to flooding and other climate-related disasters. The Deputy Governor stressed that rising sea levels and extreme heat pose existential threats, not just environmental concerns, and called for immediate attention to climate adaptation measures.

He further urged the state government to incorporate robust climate adaptation strategies into its future development plans. Additionally, Dr. Hamzat stressed the need for judicial cooperation to address land-related challenges, calling on the judiciary to support reforms that ensure the safety and future of Lagos residents.

Echoing these concerns, Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro SAN, highlighted the need for improved efficiency in the justice system. He revealed that over 6,000 cases involving the government were pending as of July 2024, stressing the importance of reducing litigation and focusing on alternative dispute resolution methods to ease the burden on the courts
https://lagosdaily.com.ng/312503/climate/lagos-faces-risk-of-submergence-due-to-climate-change/
Obafemi Hamzat talked about some New York residents relocating. About 40 percent of the world's population live within 100 kilometers of the oceans and this provides insights into human settlements.

Even Florida is experiencing the same thing with Miami experiencing floods due to a rise in sea levels. Some roads in Miami are now being elevated in some areas but as it stands, ONLY a miracle will save Miami from being submerged down the road.

Lagos and other coastal states of Nigeria have to move fast and Lagos can look at the model used by the Netherlands to contain floods and avoid being submerged. There are other strategies being used to break the speed of ocean waves (NOT the use of rocks) in order to prevent the erosion of the coastlines. Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom States are especially susceptible. I saw horrendous videos of many oil and gas-rich Ilaje ancestral communities on the Atlantic Ocean section of Ondo State that had already been submerged out into the Atlantic Ocean. Same thing too with the videos that I've seen of many Ijaw fishing communities that have been submerged by the Atlantic Ocean in Bayelsa State. These folks have had to migrate to other settlements in Bayelsa and elsewhere away from the raging waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

China, the U.S. and others must be committed to reducing and eradicating carbon (CO2 emissions) which are primarily responsible for this climate change. For those who don't know, cows produce a lot of gas (fart) daily because they have a big digestive system which also contributes to climate change. So, that has to be looked into. Cutting down on cow meat and cow milk while gravitating towards the healthier white meat from poultry would help. Period.

I watched the video twice and he didn't say specifically why he thinks or feels offended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He only ranted in anger about his plans to now work with the North for the benefit of Ijaw people.

Asari also spoke about the military men who he said are behind the illegal bunkering in the Niger Delta. I remember he said Tinubu took care of his family with funds while he was imprisoned and this is why he is eternally grateful to him and worked for his election. Now he is saying he emptied his bank accounts to campaign for Tinubu. Things said in extreme anger CANNOT be undone!

Tinubu himself must listen to all discordant voices and find out where he too may have gone WRONG in his communication. Femi Gbajabiamila, his Chief-of-Staff and others close to Tinubu such as the Vice President Shettima must pacify everyone so as not to play into the hands of fifth columnists who will seek to truncate democracy via political assassinations or a military coup, and work for the masses of Nigeria ASAP. Period.

It was during my undergraduate years at Bayero University, Kano, in the early 1990s, that I first became acutely aware of this distinctly human inclination to invariably and uncritically romanticize the past.

During one of my visits to the university library’s psychology section, I encountered a book that introduced me to the concept of cognitive biases. It was there that I learned of terms such as rosy retrospection, chronological snobbery, and declinism—all of which distort our perceptions of the present and future.

Much like rosy retrospection, declinism inclines people to view the past with nostalgia while adopting a bleak outlook toward the present and future, often despite evidence to the contrary. Although, in the Nigerian context, such declinist sentiments frequently have a foundation in objective reality.

To give another example, in 1993, most Nigerians had grown weary of Ibrahim Babangida, whose Structural Adjustment Program (SAP) had sapped the vitality of the nation. When he handed power over to Ernest Shonekan in August 1993, we collectively exhaled in relief. Yet, that respite was short-lived.

The bolded right above is indeed one of the major mental weaknesses of the human animal... A tendency for pinning for past events however bad, over the present circumstances

The generality of the masses often act like lemmings and they follow the group thinking induced by manipulative elements. Only a few knowledgeable folks with esoteric awareness have gained accendancy and mastery of the situations around them.

Bodies of Rivers helicopter crash victims airlifted to Port Harcourt

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WmcEf8So0s

Three victims of the eight crew members who were feared dead in Thursday's helicopter crash at Bonny waterways in Rivers state have been recovered and airlifted to Port Harcourt.

In an exclusive video made available to our correspondent, the corpses of the three victims were seen tied to a stretcher into a waiting helicopter off an oil vessel helipad.

Operatives of the Nigerian Navy and the owners of the helicopter were seen coordinating the airlifting of the bodies as other staff members watch the exercise.
Meanwhile, search for the remaining five bodies continue in the high sea by divers of the private firm and operatives of the Nigerian Navy.

The crashed helicopter was said to have departed the Air Force base in Port Harcourt and bound for Antan OML 123 field with two crew members and six passengers before it was said to have ditched into the ocean close to the company platform.

The Rivers state police command Spokesperson Grace Iringe-koko in a statement, commiserated with the families of the victims, as she acknowledged that a staff member of the firm reported the incident to the command.
That's part of the hazards faced in the line of duty in any professional that involves travel movements from from place to the other.

My condolences go out to the families of all the NNPCL staff and copter crew.

PoliticsRe: Lagos Targets Tourism, Commerce Rise Through Cultural Mission by Konquest:
Lanrelagboi:
As part of efforts to boost the Lagos Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the State Government has unveiled its Cultural Mission Initiative, designed to showcase the Lagos cultural heritage to the world and aid partnership with countries globally.

Through this initiative, the government also aimed to boost local and foreign tourists visit all year round to Lagos as well as increase buying and selling between the tourist and their host.

It noted that the vision behind the initiative is to make Lagos the culture powerhouse for Africa, where joint festivals, educational exchanges, and tourism promotions will be determined.

Spearheading the initiative, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Idris Aregbe, noted that Lagos’ rich cultural heritage must be promoted, saying we must tell our story to the world.

While stressing that the mission will solidify Lagos as global hub for culture, arts, and tourism, the governor’s aide stressed that the initiative will strengthen diplomatic ties with nations worldwide.

Aregbe disclosed this at the launch of Lagos Cultural Mission Movement at the Nike Arts Gallery, Lekki, yesterday, theme: “Advancing the Essence of Culture”, featured art exhibitions, cultural performances, and traditional food display, which was attended by representatives from over 20 embassies.

According to him, the Lagos State Cultural Mission Initiative is to ensure a year-round calendar of activities designed to create ongoing opportunities for learning, collaboration, and global partnerships.

“We are using this mission to promote international collaboration and advance cultural diplomacy between Lagos and other nations.

“Through this mission, we are creating lasting cultural partnerships that will not only benefit Lagos but also build bridges and foster mutual respect and collaboration with our international friends. Together, we are advancing culture and elevating Lagos as a global meeting point for creativity and connection.

Under the initiative, Aregbe said the youth will have the platform to interact with elders, get acquainted with the state’s cultural heritage to prevent it from going extinct.

He described it as a journey to explore, discover and celebrate the beauty of the state to increase investor confidence in the commercial nerve centre.

“We need to be able to tell our story and sit down and learn more about our values. We came up with this Lagos Cultural Mission, and what we intend to do is to tell our story and make sure that we appeal to lovers of Lagos.

“Let’s see how we can help each other, let’s see how we can cater for more youths on the streets. We have a lot of people waiting to add value to Lagos, we want to continue to give them a platform,” he added.

Earlier, the founder of Nike Arts Gallery, Nike Okundaye-Davies, appealed to the minister of interior to make entry visa easy for tourists, saying this will encourage more visitors into Nigeria.

“We want the minister to make visa easy for those who want to invest. It is difficult to get a Nigerian visa, we need to address this”.
https://theguildng.com/lagos-govt-targets-tourism-commerce-ursurge-through-cultural-mission/
It's doable. With the expansion of the rail Blue and Red Line services, it'll ease the movement of tourists from Nigeria and internationally from one end of Lagos to another end.

Second, places such as Lagos Island have to be gentrified and houses painted in the Isake Eko, Brazilians Quarters and Popo Aguda areas for instance. Some folks from Brazil and Cuba for instance would like to see how Yoruba returnees or emancipados from those countries and their descendants have thrived since returning to Africa from the mid-1800s down to the early 1900s.

Infact there's a whole lot of gentrifications to do in the 5 divisions of Lagos State to sustain the interests of tourists.

Last but not least, aside from providing timely security and have certified tour guides integrated into that security awareness network, Lagos State has to accelerate the introduction of portable bio toilets or biodigester public toilets that produce biogas (which is about 60 percent methane) in order to allow folks to ease themselves for a token and then use the gas for off-grid electrification and even cooking. I remember that Chief MKOs former bodyguard Otunba Isaac Durojaiye popularly known as Otunba Gaddafi (was the first to start something like that years ago until he suddenly passed on in 2012).

Alot of people especially those born from 1991 onwards may not know most of the products displayed here. Sadly many of them in the picture are no longer sold in our shops today.
The Pronto chocolate drink creatively stood out of the pack back in the 1980s because they adopted the brown plastic containers for packaging instead of the usual tin containers that most chocolate powder and milk powder beverages used. Pronto was a delight to look at back then at the Kingsway Stores, Leventis Stores, or UTC department stores aside from the fact that it tasted and smelled really good when taken hot at the dining table or wherever.

Holicks was (and still is another of my favorite chocolate drinks from back in the day).

100% correct. Some people need examples to learn from.

Mark my words people will continue to say they were guilty that's why they didn't pursue the criminal aspect of defamation.

I may understand with FEMI FALANA SAN but not with FALZ. No one can disrespect my Dad and get away with it.
Indeed, you've stated things succinctly. it's always good to test the law in these kinds of situations especially as the social media has given room for unintelligent people to relentlessly defame others online. I see some horrendous FAKE videos circulated on YouTube these days with the YouTuber giving defamatory opinions while lowering the reputation of those they are attacking in the public space.

I remember the case of the gospel singer Mercy Chinwo and Eniola Badmus respective which I first read about here on the NL frontpage in early 2024. These two women got some young people arrested and sued them for cyber bullying and criminal defamation of character. That was VERY commendable of both women IMHO. It was a young female that defamed and cyberbullied Eniola Badmus and when she got charged to court, she started begging and crying. One of the guys who criminally defamed Mercy Chinwo also STARTED begging her and said "he would help to propagate her gospel ministry if he is let off the hook." grin These people think criminal defamation is a joke. It ALSO really shows that these defamers are cowards and ignorant of the law. The supposed anonymity of the Internet has definitely fueled these ignorant behaviors, but in actual sense, there is NO absolute anonymity online. The FBI was able to take down the international fraudster, Obinwanne Okeke (the so-called Invictus Obi) and got him jailed in the United States based off of some things he posted right here on Nairaland years back.

I think these legal specifics should be taught in all schools, so, young people can imbibe the spirit of civility, know their rights, and learn when to speak up the right way in order to challenge any disconnects within the society.

Cheers.

More need to be taught such lessons for them to learn, " where you rights stop is where another person's rights begins".
Succinctly stated my brother. I detest people who spread FALSEHOODS carelessly about others in order to LOWER the reputation of those so targeted in public. That's the legal definition of defamation of character for you.

I appreciate your insights.
CelebritiesRe: If You Want Trouble, It Is My Work – Falz To Verydarkman by Konquest:
eyesoflagos:
Nigerian rapper Falz has broken his silence on the defamation lawsuit he filed against social media personality VeryDarkMan (VDM).

The case arose after VDM alleged that Falz and his father, prominent human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), assisted popular crossdresser Bobrisky in dismissing money laundering charges. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

In a recent episode of the Afrobeats Podcast, Nigerian rapper Falz opened up about his conversation with social media personality Verydarkman (VDM), following the latter’s viral video containing defamatory claims. Falz explained that, despite his attempts to address the issue amicably, VDM was defensive from the start.

“He was instantly defensive. I’m like, ‘Bro, try to listen—what are you fighting about?’ And he responded without hesitation, ‘Shebi you’re a lawyer; go to court,’” Falz recounted.

Falz went on to share that while he had the option to pursue criminal defamation charges, he chose not to escalate the matter to that extent. “I’ll have you know there’s a criminal angle to defamation, and I chose not to go that route. He could have very well been arrested. What you posted is completely false, and I asked him to take it down and apologize within a specific time frame. And what did he do? Nothing.”

The rapper expressed his deep frustration, not only with the false allegations but also with the disrespect aimed at his father, Femi Falana, a respected lawyer and advocate for human rights and justice.

“I no dey find trouble Baba, I dey my dey. You set your ring light and begin dey talk all this nonsense about me, and you expect me to sit down? He trampled on everything my father stood for, sticking out his neck for the oppressed. So this level of disrespect? See our people say that any child who says his mother would not sleep, he himself would not sleep,” Falz said passionately.

“If you say you want to find trouble, trouble is my work. If you say that’s what you’re looking for, let’s go,” he added.

https://eyesoflagos.com/2024/10/25/if-you-want-trouble-it-is-my-work-falz-to-verydarkman/
It was absolutely WRONG for Folarin and his father Femi Falana, SAN, to NOT take up criminal defamation action in court against this young man to serve as a lesson to others because they want to be politically correct. This will come back to haunt them as can be seen by the responses of some people who still insult them online while referencing that leaked audio recording. The reason why a lot of the younger ones and even some older people criminally defame others online and offline relentlessly is simply because they do NOT know the law. You have absolutely NO freedom anywhere in the world to RUN your mouth while engaging in gross character assassinations. From the United States, to the United Kingdom, France, to Japan, India, Cote d'Ivoire, etc, you defame people and you'll swiftly see the consequences of your leaking mouth!

Globally, online and offline defamation of character is a CRIMINAL offence in any country as long as you've got water-tight evidence. The offender will always pay for his or her stupidity after being brought to justice.

The young man called VDM himself later realized that he was WRONG and that's why he apologized to Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, when he went for the hearing into the case at the National Assembly in the FCT. Femi Falana, SAN, worked with the iconic Chief Gani Fawehinmi Chambers from the get-go and was arrested multiple times and sent to jail at short notice while fighting for the good of Nigeria by the brutal and highly corrupt military dictatorships in the 1980s and 1990s long before some of these young ones who are casting aspersions on him online were born or were still sucking breast milk. He deserves some RESPECT for his national sacrifices as long as he stays on the path of truth while working for the good of the masses. That's all that counts. Period.

Putting the cart in front of the horse.
I do NOT agree with you that a military coup is needed to "reset anything" over there in Nigeria. It's these same corrupt past military dictatorships and their cronies (especially from 1985 and the introduction of the Structural Adjustment Program or SAP), right into the most repressive military dictatorship ever in Nigeria in the 1990s that made Nigeria to go really south economically and repressed free speech. These triggered many Nigerian professionals in the medical field, academia, and foreign expats to start leaving Nigeria massively and relentlessly from 1985 for greener pastures in Europe, United States, Canada, etc. If these military guys come back to rule, they would make a BIG mess of things because they will circumvent the laws and dip their hands into the cookie jar (i.e., through the CBN, like that dark goggled Sani Abacha did so brazenly by illicitly moving Nigeria's money through the Central Bank of Nigeria right into his illicit offshore bank accounts in Europe and the Caribbean all totalling over 4 billion USD, with more being traced and returned in trickles) and if you raise your voices to complain, they will jail you on FALSE allegations and/or assassinate you via live bullets OR parcel bombing like they did to the iconic Bendel State (now Edo-State-born) Newswatch Magazine co-founder Dele Giwa in his off Allen Avenue, Lagos residence in 1986. I liked reading Dele Giwa's insightful articles back in the early 1980s till he passed on in 1986 and I can say without a shadow of doubt that the military dictatorship's hitmen killed him via the FIRST EVER parcel bombing of any person in Nigeria because he was working on investigative leads to expose cases of corruption in the military government and drug trafficking involving Gloria Okon, etc.

So, it's BETTER to sit things out in a civilian administration and kick the butts of anybody or politician who's NOT performing optimally out of government at the end of every four-year democratic cycle. These military dictatorships are well-known for massively repressing the media and will NOT hesitate to shut down social media platforms such as Nairaland and more if they begin to face public criticisms and resistance. These military dudes in government are globally predictable. They act nice when they FIRST come in, then turn very corrupt with the sit-tight-syndrome playing out as the months progress. Period.

Back to the CNG fuel topic, I like the way you analytically zeroed in on the part of your post that I bolded. That is the thrust of the matter here.

It's bound to happen though, because the investors in the CNG sector insisted that they weren't gonna fully come in to invest their billions UNLESS the petroleum subsidy is fully removed or deregulated. They were scared that investing billions in CNG infrastructure ahead of time would jeopardize their investments. It's now that they are rapidly deploying more CNG-based infrastructure. This would enable more folks to use CNG-PMS hybrid cars and trucks at a cheaper cost. Just push a button in your car and you can switch between CNG and gasoline (PMS).

Just 2 days ago, it was reported in multiple major online media that NNPCL had acquired new equipment to build more CNG stations in Nigeria in addition to the mega NNPC CNG fuel stations commissioned in Lagos State and Abuja from May 2024.

Some comments on this forum sound so sickening. Everytime a female person is found dead on the road, she is automatically an olosho.
Indeed, there's a significant number of incels, misogynists and psychopaths on this discussion forum and other online platforms. It's necessary to pay serious attention to those monikers as that would provide leads to solving potential crimes.

A toxicology test should be carried out.

From the state of the body ,there's no sign of violence.

I am suspecting this is a case of date drug rape gone bad.

The Police should carry out a toxicology report to see if the deceased has traces of any of those powerful sedative drugs like Rohypnol used by some rapists to knock out the victim.

Some of these sedatives may pose serious dangers to certain people and fatalities are not uncommon.

I believe this was a rape date gone wrong. The girl probably slipped into a state of coma and passed away and from there the perpetrator(s) panicked and had to get rid of her body.

The police should ensure to carry out a detailed forensic report
You made VALID points there about the drugging. All leads have to be followed to unravel this crime.

I still remember the sad case back in the 2010s of Cynthia Osokogu, the daughter of an Agbor, Delta State-born Nigerian Army general, who naively travelled from Nassarawa State to a new 3-star hotel in the Amuwo Odofin/Festac Town area of Lagos State on invitation by some idiots she met online for business and that crimally-minded boy and his male cousin (both from Anambra) FORCED her to take the same date rape drug and sexually violated her before taking away some of her valuables. She passed on right in that same hotel. The boys who were then in their 20s were sentenced to death in Lagos State after several trials, but the capital punishment hasn't been carried out yet and they are still in prison in Lagos State. I wish to see those two criminals pay dearly for that heinous crime against Cynthia Osokogu and her family. Cynthia herself lived a privileged life but was naive and that's exactly what her General father told the media.

The young girl in the pic could also have been a victim of robbery or kidnapping while in transit in Asaba and this is why men and women shouldn't travel or visit places they haven't been to at night. Some females take risks that have unintended consequences and this is why everybody MUST be conversant about the various ways that crimes are committed in order to minimize being victims. Period.
Foreign AffairsRe: Family Of Christian Soldier Who Fell In Gaza Asked To Remove Cross Frm There Gra by Konquest: 10:38am On Oct 25, 2024
The family of a soldier who was killed fighting in the Gaza Strip last year say that they have been given an ultimatum to remove the headstone from his grave because it has a cross on it, or have his body reburied outside the Haifa military cemetery.

The family of Staff Sgt. David Bogdanovskyi told Hebrew media on Monday that they had received a letter from the Public Council for Commemoration of Fallen Soldiers in the Defense Ministry following an ongoing dispute that had seen his headstone covered with a black cloth for several months.

Bogdanovskyi, 19, was killed along with several of his comrades when an anti-tank guided missile hit a Namer armored engineering vehicle they were in, in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis in December.

The Bogdanovskyi family had emigrated from Ukraine to Israel in 2014.

The black marble headstone has an engraved picture of Bogdanovskyi in his military uniform along with his name written in the Ukrainian Cyrillic alphabet, his unit symbols and a small cross.

It sits above the standardized stone plaque that adorns all military graves in Israel.

In response, the Defense Ministry said it has been in a longstanding consultation with the family to find a solution because the headstone violates military cemetery regulation that bar crosses or other religious symbols.

It said that it had received complaints from families of Jewish soldiers buried nearby who said that the presence of the cross “offends them and harms their ability to pray and say the Kaddish mourning prayer.”

It also noted that the chief military rabbi had ruled that the cross harms the sanctity of the cemetery.

“As such, we have been involved for a long time with the Bogdanovskyi family in honest, heartfelt discussions to reach and agreement,” the ministry said, adding that it still hoped to reach a compromise.

The US is sending a missile defense system, called a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense battery to Israel, along with the troops needed to operate it, the Pentagon said, even as Iran warned Washington to keep American military forces out of Israel.

Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, Pentagon spokesman, said in a statement that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin authorized the deployment of the THAAD battery at the direction of President Joe Biden. He said the system will help bolster Israel’s air defenses following Iran’s ballistic missile attacks on Israel in April and October.

Glenn Ignazio, retired Air Force special operations commander joined LiveNOW from FOX's Josh Breslow to discuss what it means.

A new report has found a "shocking rise" in anti-Muslim racism in European countries. The survey, which covered nearly 10,000 Muslims, found that 47% respondents reported facing racism. While European leaders are quick to lecture other countries on secularism and religious rights, they have been silent on this recent report. Palki Sharma tells you why.

Lebanon used to be a Christian-majority country until the Palestinians started to enter there illegally and destroyed the country.

Beirut (the Capital of Lebanon) was called Paris of the Middle East. Now, Lebanon gets dragged into unnecessary conflicts with Israel due to terror groups like Hezbollah, an Iranian proxy, operating inside the country.

PoliticsRe: Real List Of 1966 Coupist, The Casualties And Their Tribe by Konquest: 9:19pm On Oct 24, 2024
TheNiceGuy:
The 1966 Nigerian Coup d'état began on January 15, 1966 when rebel soldiers led by Kaduna Nzeogwu assassinated 11 senior Nigerian politicians and two soldiers as well as kidnapping three others. The coup plotters attacked the cities of Kaduna, Ibadan, and Lagos while also blockading the Niger and Benue River within a two-day span of time.

In August 1965 five Igbo Majors were beginning to plot a coup against incumbent Prime Minister Abubakar Balewa. The coup was planned because the Majors were dissatisfied with the governments actions and that most Nigerian politicians were of Hausa or Fulani descent. In a memoir written by coup plotter Adewale Ademoyega he wrote

"Our enemies are the political profiteers, the swindlers, the men in high and low places, that seek bribes and demand 10%; those that seek to keep the country divided permanently so that they can remain in office as ministers or VIPs."

The coup plotters had five goals to achieve, to Strike simultaneously in regional capitals, arrest leading politicians-kill any who resist, avoid reprisals-kill all senior army officers, prevent troop movement-block Niger and Benue, and form a new Government. They planned to strike right before the Commonwealth Conference so that Balewa would be distracted from any suspicious army movements.

Officers involved

The list below shows the officers involved on both sides of the coup as well as their ethnic backgrounds.

In the weeks leading up to the coup Maj. Kaduna Nzeogwu carried out reconnaissance on Ahmadu Bello's mansion in Kaduna. Nzeogwu often took his men on a night-time training exercise known as "Exercise Damisa" which was in actuality a practice run for a military coup. The commander of the 2nd Brigade, Brig. Samuel Ademulegun, became irritated with the night-time exercises and reprimanded Nzeogwu in a telephone call to keep exercises a safe distance from Bello's mansion. Although Ademulegun complained about the commotion he had no idea of the exercise's true purpose. Nzeogwu's control over his troops was so little that he had to conscript young soldiers from the Nigerian Military Training College at Kaduna. In the early hours on January 15, 1966 Nzeogwu decided to turn "Exercise Damisa" into a full blown military coup. Nzeogwu led his men to a bush adjacent to the mansion gates and informed them of their real mission. Nzeogwu and his men blew open the mansion gates and conducted a search of the residence, hunting for Bello. After losing his temper at his initial failure to locate him, Nzeogwu found him hiding with his wives. Bello was shot along with one of his wives who tried to shield him with her body. Bello's faithful bodyguard came to defend him with a bow and arrows but was also shot.

Nzeogwu's co-conspirator, Maj. Timothy Onwuatuegwu, personally led a detachment of soldiers to Ademulegun's house. Onwuatuegwu made his way up to the Brigadier's room where he was laying beside his wife. Upon seeing Onwuatuegwu enter the room, Ademulegun shouted at him "Timothy, what the devil do you think your doing?". Onwuatuegwu told Ademulegun that he was under arrest. Ademulegun reached for a drawer beside his bed, and as he did so, Onwuatuegwu shot him dead in his bed, along with Ademulegun's wife who was laying beside him.

The head of the NMTC Col. Ralph Shodeinde was killed, but the manner of his death is unclear. His wife testified that he was shot by several soldiers that included Maj. Nzeogwu and Maj. Onwuatuegwu. Other accounts claim that a grenade was tossed at him. It is not clear if Nzeogwu was involved with Shodeinde's death since presumably he was pre-occupied at the time with killing Ahmadu Bello. Most accounts place responsibility for Shodeinde's murder with Onwuatuegwu. The same Onwuatuegwu, who shot both Shodeinde and Ademulegun along with his wife, kidnapped but did not harm the Governor of the Northern Region Kashim Ibrahim. When released Ibrahim vouched that he had been treated with the utmost respect by the men who kidnapped him.

The commander of the 2nd Reece squadron in Kaduna, Hassan Katsina, was not harmed during the coup. Shortly before the coup started, Katsina bumped into Nzeogwu. It is speculated that the conversation between the two men may have saved Katsina's life as Nzeogwu's familiarity with Katsina's family may have led him to exclude Katsina from the coup out of empathy. When the two men met again shortly after the coup, Nzeogwu asked him directly "Are you with us or against us?". Seeing that Nzeogwu was holding a gun, Katsina wisely replied "you know I am with you."

At around 2am Maj. Emmanuel Ifeajuna and some lieutenants from the 2nd Brigade HQ made their way to Prime Minister Abubakar Balewa's residence. They overpowered, but did not kill, the police officers standing guard there. Ifeajuna then kicked down the door of the Prime Minister's bedroom before leading him out at gunpoint. Elsewhere in Lagos, Maj. Don Okafor attempted to arrest Brig. Zakariya Maimalari but he managed to escape by jumping over a wall behind his house. As he was escaping on foot, he came across the car of his Brigade Major, Emmanuel Ifeajuna. Maimalari recognized Ifeajuna and had no idea that he was part of the coup plot. Erroneously believing that Ifeajuna could be trusted, Maimalari waved down the car, and was promptly shot by Ifeajuna. The commanding officer of the Ibadan-based 4th battalion, Lt. Col. Abogo Largema, was a guest at the Ikoyi hotel on the night of the coup. Ifeajuna arrived at the hotel and forced the desk clerk at gunpoint to inform Largema that he had a phone call. When Largema emerged from his room Ifeajuna and a subaltern emerged from their hiding place in a corridor and shot Largema dead. The army's GOC Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi was tipped off about the coup by a telephone call from Lt. Col. James Pam. Shortly after ending his telephone call with Ironsi, Pam was abducted from his house and shot dead by Maj. Chris Anuforo. The only Igbo to die in the coup, Lt. Col. Arthur Unegbe, was shot by Anuforo because he was known to be close to Brig. Maimalari and had to be silenced in order to avoid him from raising the alarm. Balewa, Col. Kur Mohammed, and Minister of Finance Festus Okotie-Eboh were initially kidnapped, but were later killed.

In Ibadan the premier of the Western Region Chief Samuel Akintola had been forewarned that soldiers were coming to get him. Akintola heard rumors of a coup and traveled to Kaduna to warn the premier of the Northern Region, Ahmadu Bello. After failing to raise any urgency in Bello, Akintola returned to Ibadan and armed himself with a rifle. His deputy Chief Fani Kayode was first arrested by the coupists. After his arrest, Kayode's wife informed Akintola of what had happened. Shortly afterward a detachment of soldiers led by Capt. Emmanuel Nwobosi arrived at Akintola's residence. Upon sighting the soldiers, Akintola opened fire, wounding a few of them including Capt. Nwobosi. After fighting for his life and engaging the soldiers in a gunfight, Akintola was shot dead by Nwobosi's men.
