The real reason Britain so called helped to end slavery was because they had become the most invested country in the trade, had a vast naval power, and trade network, and therefore, when public opinion turned against the slave trade, they became like the de facto country to help end it.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has taken “an extraordinary series of steps” to safeguard both his life and the leadership structure of the Islamic Republic amid escalating Israeli attacks on Iranian territory, according to a report by The New York Times on Saturday, Anadolu reports.

Citing three Iranian officials familiar with emergency war plans, the report said Khamenei has suspended electronic communications and now speaks with commanders primarily through a “trusted aide,” in an effort to avoid detection.

The supreme leader, now “ensconced in a bunker,” has reportedly appointed a line of replacements down the military chain of command, and also named three senior clerics as potential successors in the event of his death, the report added.

The measures come amid Israeli threats to eliminate the Iranian leader.

The officials cited by The New York Times said that Khamenei believes either Israel or the US could attempt to assassinate him.

The report emphasized the seriousness of Iran’s current situation, noting that Khamenei’s son Mojtaba, once rumored to be a frontrunner, is not among the named successors.

Security concerns have led the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence to enforce strict measures, including a ban on the use of phones or electronic devices by senior officials and military commanders, the report said.

Hostilities broke out on June 13 when Israel launched airstrikes on several sites across Iran, including military and nuclear facilities, prompting Tehran to launch retaliatory strikes.

Israeli authorities said at least 25 people have been killed and hundreds injured since then in Iranian missile attacks.

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has named a newly completed specialist hospital after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in recognition of his leadership and commitment to national development.

The Bola Ahmed Tinubu Specialist Hospital, unveiled on Thursday during the President’s visit to inaugurate key projects across the state, houses nine wings, including maternal and child health, radiology and imaging, intensive care, and special care units.

At the event, Governor Sani disclosed that the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority had approved the establishment of a cancer treatment and nuclear facility within the hospital complex.

He, however, appealed to President Tinubu to assist in actualising the cancer centre.

“That’s the only thing missing,” the governor said.

“We are seeking Mr President’s intervention to help us complete this critical component.”

In his response, President Tinubu praised the Kaduna governor for his vision and people-focused governance.

That’s exactly what a colossal dam in China has done—shifting Earth’s rotation axis by nearly an inch and subtly lengthening our days. This might sound like science fiction, but it’s real, verified by NASA and experts studying the planet’s delicate movements.


Built over 18 years, the Three Gorges Dam reshaped the Yangtze River’s flow, creating a reservoir so vast it holds about 10 trillion gallons of water. This accumulation of water isn’t just a feat of engineering; it has a surprising effect on the Earth’s spin and stability.

How the three gorges dam impacts Earth’s rotation and axis
Between 1994 and 2012, the Three Gorges Dam transformed the Yangtze River into a massive reservoir containing roughly 39.3 billion cubic meters (about 10 trillion gallons) of water. Experts at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center report that this weight has physically shifted Earth’s rotation axis by nearly two centimeters—roughly three-quarters of an inch.


Though two centimeters may seem tiny, it’s significant when considering the planet’s size. Even more intriguing is that this added mass is concentrated above sea level, pressing on Earth’s crust and redistributing the planet’s mass. Scientists explain that changes in how the Earth’s mass is spread out influence the moment of inertia, the property that affects how quickly the planet spins.

Think of a figure skater spinning with arms extended—when the skater pulls their arms in, they spin faster; when they stretch out again, the spin slows. Earth, too, spins slightly slower when mass moves farther from its axis. The dam’s reservoir essentially “extends the planet’s arms,” causing a tiny slowdown of about 0.06 microseconds in each day. While imperceptible in daily life, it’s measurable with precision instruments.

Similar effects were noticed after natural disasters such as the massive 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which shifted Earth’s axis and shortened the day by a few microseconds due to tectonic movement. The case of the dam is a powerful example of how human activities can alter global geophysical balances.

Environmental and human ripple effects of China’s largest hydroelectric project
The Three Gorges Dam isn’t just notable for reshaping Earth’s axis; it’s also a human and environmental story on a grand scale. Aside from its staggering size, the dam includes state-of-the-art lock systems and a ship elevator capable of lifting vessels weighing up to 6,600 tons over a vertical height exceeding 330 feet. This facilitates improved inland navigation on the Yangtze, powering trade and commerce in the region.

This technological marvel brings significant benefits. It generates more than 80 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually—enough to supply multiple countries—while reducing dependence on coal and other fossil fuels in China. Additionally, the dam helps control flooding along the Yangtze River, protecting millions of residents downstream.

But not all impacts are positive. Constructing the reservoir displaced approximately 1.3 million people, forcing entire communities to relocate and dramatically altering about 370 miles of landscape. The flooded areas have transformed ecosystems that took centuries to evolve, raising questions about the cost of progress and the price of human intervention in nature.

Farmers in Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State have reportedly received threats from terrorists believed to be members of the Lakurawa group, warning them against replacing traditional cattle-driven farming methods with mechanised equipment.

According to reports by security analyst Zagazola Makama, the terrorists warned that anyone found using mechanised tools in place of cattle for farming would be executed. The warning has triggered fear and panic among residents of affected communities, many of whom had begun shifting to modern farming techniques in response to ongoing cattle rustling in the region.

“Now, the terrorists are dictating how we should farm,” a local source was quoted as saying. “They forbid us from using machines. When we use cattle, they seize them. We’re farming both for sustenance and commercial purposes.”

An intelligence source also reportedly confirmed that the threats were genuine and circulated among several villages in Augie LGA. Community members are now calling for urgent intervention from the Nigerian military and government.

The area has suffered repeated attacks and widespread cattle rustling, allegedly by the same group. In April, at least 13 vigilantes were killed in Morai village, also in Augie LGA, after suspected Lakurawa gunmen ambushed them during a failed attempt to recover stolen livestock.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in Kebbi State, Nafiu Abubakar, said he would investigate the development.

The traditional ruler of Okahia Autonomous Community in the Obingwa council area of Abia State, Eze Okey Ananaba, has raised the alarm over what he described as the security threats posed by the massive land acquisition by suspected herdsmen in some communities in the area.

He stated that the destruction of farm crops and possession of illegal arms like AK-47 rifles by the herders had aggravated tension in the rural communities as the herdsmen threatened to kill the vigilantes and farmers who challenged them.

Ananaba raised the alarm during a sensitization visit/ town hall meeting by the officials of the Greater Aba Development Authority, GADA, in his community. He expressed concern that suspected herders have already acquired over 5,000 plots of land in strategic border communities such as Mgboko Umuanunu, near the boundary with Akwa Ibom state and Akpaa Mbato community behind the National Institute for Nigerian Languages, NINLAN, Ovom, Aba.

He said, “We are concerned that suspected herders have already acquired over 5,000 plots of land in strategic border communities such as Mgboko Umuanunu, near the border with Akwa Ibom state and Akpaa Mbato community behind the National Institute for Nigerian Languages, NINLAN, Ovom, Aba.

There are other massive land acquisitions in other communities in Obingwa LGA and environs.

The monarch disclosed that traditional rulers in the area had petitioned the Abia State Government over ongoing land transactions several times several times but lamented that nothing had been done to check the ugly trend.

“Traditional rulers in Obingwa LGA have petitioned the Abia State Government to halt the ongoing land transactions. But our efforts have been ignored, this continues to threaten the people and raising fears of impending violence. Traditional rulers are the people at the rural communities, the government should give urgent attention to any report from us because we feel the pain. We are the eye of the government in our communities.”

He called on Governor Alex Otti to investigate the trend of massive land acquisitions in Obingwa council to prevent a repeat of the bandits and herdsmen’s violent attacks on indigenes of communities as being witnessed in Benue and Plateau States, which have resulted in loss of lives and displacement of villagers.

Some of the people who spoke at the town hall meeting alleged that some traditional rulers in the areas are behind the massive acquisition of lands by herders and urged the government to stop the practice of registering massive lands in the communities without investigating land use.
